Book Description
The master of comic book writing shares his thoughts on how to deliver a top-notch script! The main essay was originally written in 1985 and appeared in an obscure British fanzine, right as Moore was reshaping the landscape of modern comics, and has been tragically lost ever since. Now Avatar brings it back in print, collected for the first time as one graphic novel, and heavily illustrated by Jacen Burrows. Moore also provides a brand new essay on how his thoughts on writing have changed in the two decades since he first wrote it.

Not what you expect, but better than you'd guess.......2007-09-16
Sure, it's a comic-book format book on comics, and an expensive one to boot. But, if you can forget the medium and focus on the message Moore is trying you get across, you'll be surprised to find that it's more than just a guide to writing funny books. It's a guide to the creative process.
This is one of the most succinct and eloquent books on the creative process I have ever read, and I've read plenty. If you are new to the creative process, Moore outlines what it takes to tell a good story in a way that connects to the reader, tights or no. If you are already a creator, the last chapter tells you the questions you'll find yourself facing when you have mastered the form.
I really can't recommend this title enough, even if the cost seems a little steep for what you appear to be getting.
Jump starts the imagination .......2007-06-22
Alan Moore takes us behind the scenes of comic writing as he explores his creative process and the important factors all new authors should consider when starting out in the comics medium. Even though it's very short, Moore packs insightful and relevant concepts into just a few pages that made my head spin after reading them. It is obvious that he puts a lot of effort and care into his writing, and he considers every detail: from character development to panel transitions to writing for a specific market and beyond. All these topics are covered here in-depth in a surprisingly succinct and conscientious manner for someone who is notorious for producing scripts that contain hundreds of pages. I particularly enjoyed Moore's analogies about lulling the reader into a semi-cognitive state where they are completely entranced by the story, and then using the crux or the climax to shock them so violently and thoroughly in this dream state that once they snap out of it they will never forget what happened to them. When he wrote this treatise on the writing of comics Alan Moore was still relatively young, but already a master of pace and plotting as well as where to mine for the central 'idea' behind every story which is the most vital part of the creative process. He uses several issues of Swamp Thing which he was writing at the time (circa 1985 or so) to substantiate his claims, and it is here where one truly comes to appreciate his brilliance. More than anybody except maybe Will Eisner, Moore is the foremost authority on comics scriptwriting, and this book helped me to understand and appreciate the comics that I have been reading for the last 25 years so much more. A worthy read for anyone interested in the creative process behind the pages and panels of comics.
Not great, not awful. VERY short book........2007-06-16
Not great, not awful. VERY short book. VERY SMALL.
Not a bad little book.......2007-06-09
I enjoyed the book mostly, until the last chapter, which he wrote 15 years later and in which he basically says "Forget everything I wrote about 15 years ago. Things have changed, and those observations don't apply anymore." After absorbing the rest of the book, it kind of dampened my enjoyment. I am now left with the thought that he should have just written a new book with his updated views, using the benefit of the years of experience since the first book. It being the first book I have read on this subject, I don't have anything else to compare it to, but I feel sure there are better books out there that don't contradict themselves.
A brief look at the art of writing.......2006-09-03
For those familiar with the field, Alan Moore is one of the acknowledged greats in comic book writing, creating - among other things - The Watchmen, arguably the best superhero graphic novel ever. At least three of his works have been adapted into moderately successful movies: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and most recently, V for Vendetta. But just as many of the best baseball players have made lousy managers, we cannot assume that a good writer can provide good instruction. In the case of Moore, however, the news is good.
Alan Moore's Writing For Comics is a short collection of essays that he originally wrote in the mid-1980s. As a book, there isn't much there, only 47 pages. On the other hand, I've read some 150 page books that were stretched out through large margins and spacing to be nearly twice that length; at least you get your money's worth from each of Moore's pages.
This was actually the second book I read on comic book recently. Peter David's take on writing (Writing for Comics with Peter David) is good too, and though Moore and David cover some of the same ground, Moore's version is slightly more intellectual, as would be expected if the two writers were compared (this is no knock on David, just an acknowledgement of two different styles). And in both cases, many of the lessons from this book aren't just for comics but can be expanded into other fiction as well. Plot, setting, characterization: these are the basics of all fiction.
Moore doesn't have much to say, but what he does say, he says well. Nonetheless, even at its modest price, there are books out there that say similar things and deliver more per dollar spent. This is a good book, but I recommend going elsewhere unless you're a big Moore fan; Peter David's book is a worthwhile alternative.

99 More Unuseless Japanese Inventions is a delightfully wacky book, easily the equal of its predecessor, 1995's 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions. Those of you fortunate enough to pick that book up (and that's quite a few people--it was a surprise hit) already know that "Chindogu" is the not-so-ancient Japanese art of creating "gadgets that appear to be useful, but on closer examination, aren't."
99 More Unuseless Japanese Inventions is written with a droll earnestness that is perfectly in pitch. But what puts the book over the top are the tongue-in-cheek catalog-style photos that show each invention in use. The idea of "The Portable Countryside" is amusing, but when you actually see a stern-faced Japanese executive with a flower box full of greenery swinging at his side like an oversized purse, it's impossible not to laugh. Or consider the definition of "Swiss Army Gloves": "Multi-purpose mittens that keep you ready for anything. Swiss Army Gloves provide a lighter, fork, corkscrew, bottle opener, pen, cutter, hole puncher and two screwdrivers all at the tips of your fingers--literally."
Chindogu is an exacting art, and the rules for its creation can be found in the front of the book. As a gentle, sly satire of the welter of new and better inventions that constantly pours down on us, 99 More Unuseless Japanese Inventions is admirable. That may be assigning much too much sense to this splendidly nonsensical volume; nevertheless, this book and its mate are wonderful.
Book Description
Strangely practical and utterly eccentric inventions for a life of ease-and hilarity. In Japan, inventor and visionary Kenji Kawakami is famous for his creation and tireless promotion of chindogu-the art of "the unuseless idea." This book, the sequel to the enormously popular 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions, features 99 more of his inventions: inspired devices designed to solve all the nagging problems of domestic life, including ones you may not have realized you have. Enter the realm of the almost useful, where you will find Duster Slippers for Cats (for feline assistance with tedious housework), the Full Body Umbrella (for day-long all-over dryness), the Fish Face Cover (helps get the fish cut up with minimum emotional trauma), and the Temporary Ladies' Room Converter (stake your claim to the facilities). Every item has been fabricated to the highest standards, fully tested by pioneering members of the Japanese public, and tastefully photographed. It is only a matter of time before Americans succumb to their charm, logic, and utility.
Customer Reviews:
Hysterical.......2005-03-26
I love this book. The inventions are so...so...well, I expect to see a few of these on TV while watching late night television. Nature lover's shoes? I had some of those as a kid. The lipstick stencil? Where was this when I was an awkward teenager? The hair protector for eating noodles? I needed that at lunch the other day! See what I mean? Excellent. Recommended for your friends with a wild sense of humor. My 12 year old also loves it.
A great book.......2001-08-26
This book is great. It shows many inventions that you might want. Some of the inventions I even have made my own of because I think it would be very useful. There is only one reason why I only rated this 4 stars, The book is not very long I finished reading it in 2 hours while even doing other things at the same time....
Very Interesting.......2000-07-14
This book of 99 wacky Japanese inventions is one of the best books around for casual, page flipping type reading. Everytime I flip through this book I find some new Japanese invention that captures my interest. This truly is a coffee table type book, with many color photos of each invention, and summaries of the inventions uses. Most of the inventions are cool, but of the sort that you'd probably never really have the desire to use; some of these inventions I actually could see myself using. For an interesting book that would be perfect on the coffee talbe look no further than 99 More Unuseless Japanese Inventions.
Great coffeetable book.......2000-06-08
This sequel to 101 Un-useless Inventions, has 3 or more pictures with each invention. Learn about Japanese norms indirectly through these over-the-top inventions. Guarantee you'll be laughing before halfway through this book. You'll also shake your head in amazement and wish some of these things really were on the market. Notable ones: Cigarettes that light without a match. A clipper to clip all your toes at once. And the ingenious solar-powered flashlight. I'd recommend it as a giftbook or to have around the house to entertain guests.
What you see is what you get - some good laughs.......1999-01-04
You expect it to be wacky, and it is. It's a laugh. If you are buying for the 'person who has everything' then this book might be a neat gift. Otherwise buy it second-hand, and get the same laughs for half the money. It's a throw-away.

Sensual, sexual, soulful and rhythmic, its very emergence is a feat of courage and resilience, where all but government-approved musicians are oppressed and restricted.

Everything you want to know about Cuban music and culture.......2001-11-05
I really enjoyed this book. I love the author's sense of curiousity and his honest attempt to blend in and view things from a typical Cuban perspective.
DANCING WITH FIDEL is a small in size but large in terms of the amount of ground it covers. The author provides an insightful overview of the past, present and future of Cuban music and culture.
Kudos to the author for allowing us to participate in his Cuban odyssey.

200 Sunday-size puzzles from the New York Times
Customer Reviews:
Most Enjoyable.......2006-02-03
This collection has what it takes to keep me happy. The book itself is a well made soft-bound type where the pages don't come out, but I don't have much trouble with them. I just fold the thing over and work on either side. You can use either pencil or pen, but pencil can get blurry... The puzzles are long enough to occupy my mind for a few hours each. The clues are mostly solveable with a fair amount of thinking and puzzling. I have to peek sometimes. I like this kind of action over a set that either has me in the back half the time or I'm never in the back and can get the puzzle done in under an hour. The time frame's pretty current, so you have to know your current history along with the stuff from the last decade, which is good, in my book- tripped me up a few times already.. All-in-all, I'd say it's standard fare for this particular line. If you've never tried these puzzles, give them a whirl. They give good value for your money. If you do them in pencil, they erase well, so you can replay the book a few times before it wears out. When I started this type of puzzle, I needed a dictionary a lot, but rarely do now, having learned how to constructively solve and get the maximum type of enjoyment these books offer.
Sloppy printing makes reading difficult.......2003-09-08
Exciting crossword puzzles, as ever. However, the numbers in the grid itself are so poorly printed (cheap paper or ink) that misreading an entry is not uncommon. I prefer to speind time thinking of an answer, not staring closely at the puzzle to be certain what number is in a given square. There are plenty of preferable alternative puzzle sources for those who, like me, would rather pay more for an adequately printed product.
A bargain . . . at a price.......2002-03-29
Two hundred New York Times Sunday crosswords at a nickel apiece is a great deal. The book is loaded with the work of well-known as well as less well-known constructors. Most of the puzzles are quite challenging and interesting to work and there is an ample number of humorous concepts included in the batch.
The drawback to the book - i.e., the "price" we pay for the publisher's generosity - is the lack of perforation and/or distance between the working areas and the binding. Having to write around curves on the top couple of lines across is a bit irksome.
Yet, all in all, this book is a true bargain and well worth the cost and the minor inconvenience.
They've Done It Again!.......2000-07-12
I'm pretty good at word puzzles but these books by the NY Times are continually able to stump me. I keep doing them because they increase my vocabulary enormously. I always keep a dictionary close by, and disect each clue after I have completed the puzzles. NEVER have I done a whole puzzle without aid! This keeps me humble!

Customer Reviews:
WANT A CAREER YOU LOVE? GET THIS BRILLIANT BOOK.......2007-08-13
This is the masterpiece book on picking your perfect career. I went all the way through a PhD program only to discover I did not enjoy my field. I bought and read several of the popular career titles such as the Parachute book but did not find most of them particularly helpful. The exception was The Pathfinder. I read through all the reviews of it this morning and the one word that shows up in many of them is "brilliant", the best single word to describe this book. The author says that in order to have a career you love it needs to fit your "natural" talents and your personality perfectly, allow you to do work that comes most naturally to you. In addition, it must be in a field you care about, fulfill your goals and put you in a workplace environment that suits you well. I noticed that the few negative reviews of this book mostly complain that it is too long. I disagree. I found the whole book to be very useful. It is long because picking a career that fits is not easy. The book challenges you to reach toward a career that is not a compromise and shows you how to do so. It takes you through many exercises that help you discover what would make a career fit you perfectly. It teaches you how to deal with the obstacles that get in the way, most of which are self-generated internal voices that tell you to avoid risk. It takes you all the way through to the final goal.
I called the author's Rockport Institute today and got to speak with him. It turns out that this organization created the field of career coaching nearly thirty years ago and does constant research on what it takes to pick a career that fits. No wonder this is better than the other books.
Get Ready to Meet Yourself......Finally!.......2007-08-12
This book is not meant to be read overnight, but rather a guide to wake-up to everyday as you step yourself closer to the who, what, and when you really are. This book provides the "How" of getting there. Ranging from recalling your childhood dreams, discovering where you are at on your life's timeline, meeting the different parts of yourself all the way to ultimately waking up one day (for me, two years later) and realizing a vocation that fits you like your own fingerprints. This is a labor of love of discovering yourself with Nick (the author)along side you as you reflect and laugh along the way. I recommend this book highly....provided you value yourself enough to dig in and do the self-work involved in this type of journey.
Too long and windy!.......2007-08-03
I bought this book because it had a high 4.5 star rating in Amazon. I have been extremely disappointed. The author of this book must be in love with his own voice. I get the sense that the book was dictated. It wheezes on for over 350 pages. The text is like an endless blog.
Years ago, I read What Color is Your Parachute? That was a good book! Buy that one--instead of Pathfinder....unless you like endless pontification.
test in the book.......2007-06-06
hi - i actually wanted to give this test ..but not sure of...there are some tests already in the book...does this test provide much more?
Innate Ability battery.......2007-04-24
I did the innate ability battery recommended by this book and I feel a lot clearer on what I am good at, not good, at and different ways to think about myself and what might make me happy. This one clued me in in a very comprehensive way. If you are confused about what would make you happy, fulfilled, goal-oriented etc, then take this test. The other tests other than myers-briggs are not too useful. (I also did the whole workbook of what color is my parachute a couple years ago but this test feels more like knowledge I can build upon.) The cost to do the test is high but the value I feel I will get is equal plus the discussion I had with the counselor made me feel like I was talking to someone who understood where I was coming from. I would like to do more personal counseling but the book will have to do and I look forward to answering the questions to figure it out. ( i don't work for anyone or am related to anything regarding this book)
