Book Description
Consider the oddly juxtaposed eminence of those in attendance: Wartime New York was the city where French Symbolism, in the person of Maurice Maeterlinck, came to live out its last productive years; where French surrealism, in the person of André Breton, came to survive; and where French structuralism, in the person of Claude Lévi-Strauss, came to be born. From the largely forgotten prewar visit to the city of Pétain and Laval to the seizing, burning, and capsizing of the Normandie, France's floating museum, in the Hudson River, Jeffrey Mehlman evokes the writerly world of French Manhattan, its achievements and feuds, during one of the most vexed periods of French history.
In Emigré New York, a series of surprising and expertly etched portraits emerge against the backdrop of an overriding irony: the United States, the world's principal hope in the battle against Hitler's barbarism, was for the most part more eager to deal with Pétain's collaborationist regime than with what Secretary of State Cordell Hull called de Gaulle's "so-called Free French" movement.

Book Description
Here, reintroduced into literary circulation, is an ignored yet rich and original page in Russian literary history-the "unnoticed generation" of Russian writers who took up residence in France after the Bolshevik coup of 1917. Leonid Livak analyzes the position of these writers in the context of French modernist literature, examining the ways in which French literary life influenced émigré artistic identities and oeuvre. The book challenges commonly accepted notions of émigré isolation from French literature and culture and is instrumental in reaching a fuller understanding of the cultural mechanisms involved in the effort by an expatriate community to carry on a creative existence.
Livak's study explores the mechanisms of cultural interpretation of exile based on the example of the Russian refugees who took up residence in France after the Bolshevik coup of 1917. The importance which Russian exiles attributed to literary expression as a means of cultural preservation and continuity makes their literature a case study in cultural modeling. The author focuses on the younger-sometimes referred to as the "second" or "unnoticed"-generation of writers, who matured artistically outside Russia. He analyzes the specific position of the "unnoticed generation" in the context of French modernist literature, examining the ways in which French literary life influenced émigré artistic identities.

Book Description
Lock up your valuables. Stockpile your ammunition. Sandbag your bunker. The familiar foursome of Rat, Pig, Goat, and Zebra-joined now by the fraternity of Zeeba Zeeba Eata crocodiles are here to storm the ramparts of humor in The Ratvolution Will Not Be Televised.
In this fourth collection from the award-winning comic strip Pearls Before Swine, Stephan Pastis deploys all the weapons of his comic arsenal in an all-out attack on the animal (and human) imperfections he sees around him. The result is a collection jam-packed with the sharp-edged humor that has made Pearls Before Swine one of the most successful comic strips running in newspapers today.
Just remember: As The Ratvolution Will Not Be Televised makes clear, Pearls Before Swine takes no prisoners.
We warned you.

Buy this.......2007-05-15
Ever since I discovered PBS in our local paper I have been a devoted fan of Pastis' different? sense of humour. I have turned my friends and relatives on to PBS as well. I have made it a goal to buy all his books so I will have a complete collection that I can put beside my 'The Complete Far Side' and 'The Complete Calvin & Hobbes Collection'. PBS has earned the right to be in this great company.
Buy this book, in fact buy all his books; a mind this warped deserves to be rewarded.
Love this Book, But..........2007-04-30
I am a huge fan of Pearls Before Swine, and bought this book to add to my collection. The comics are great!
My only complaint is, I already owned one of his anthologies: Lions and Tigers and Crocs, Oh My! All but about three of the cartoons in this book (Ratvolution) are in Lions and Tigers and Crocs. It was really disappointing to spend another seven or eight dollars for all the same cartoons.
Otherwise, it's great, classic Pearls.
classic Pearls.......2007-01-12
Mandatory reading for Pearls fans, plus you'll gain new insights into the secret lives of condiments.
The best Pearls book to date........2007-01-09
Very funny, so much so that I read it through 3 times before I gave it to my parents to laugh and enjoy. I still get a smile when I thumb through it. Of all Mr Pastis books, you should have this one for sure.
Pastis is a genius........2006-12-16
This was the cutest collection of comics I've ever read. However I would have liked to see more crocs in it. Unfortunately they only appear towards the end of the book.

365 Videos you probably haven't seen.......2005-01-21
I don't know how this totally inferior book got published. If I'd seen the cover before I bought it, saying she'd seen every Shirley Temple movie 8 times, that would have given me a clue as to her taste and I would never have bought it. A waste of time and certainly no one could consider her a responsible movie critic. The movies recommended are hardly 4 star movies. Most of them aren't even worth seeing. No wonder you probably haven't seen them.
If you haven't seen these films, you're not a film buff.......2003-05-04
In all honesty, I'm not a movie fantatic, but to imply one hasn't seen these 4 star films is rather problematic. I'm not quite sure who these people are--who haven't seen these films--that the writer has in mind. I've seen about all of these films; some are good, some not so good. The commentary is ok, but not on a par with informed film critics. Well, I guess if you haven't read much, you might have a book called "Great Books You've Never Read," and perhaps "1984" would be among them, but that tells us more about the assumptions of the writer than the audience.

Best video guide on the market!!!.......1996-08-31
Throw all of your other video guides away -- this one is the only one you'll need. Text is intelligent and funny, and out of the 10 or 11 films out of the book that I rented, I've really enjoyed all of them, and had never heard of any of them beforehand
Good titles, funny, I liked the index........1996-08-27
I liked the size of the book, I take it to the video store to figure out what to get if the new titles are out. The standard vidoe guide (Lenard Maltin, etc.) is too big and has 99% movies that no one cares about. This guide has just the best movies, and she tells you why they are good, back ground or the context of the times, etc. The book is fun to read in its own right, even if you're not looking to get a movie. I think it is a good gift idea. I hope she writes a second version
Customer Reviews:
Not worth reading!.......2000-02-10
This book is a waste of time. It is boring, pedantic, unoriginal, forced, poorly written and of no practical use to music educators. Most of the theoretical ideas do not belong to Jorgensen herself; she owes her few good ideas to other scholars in music education who Jorgensen fails to credit. So, add poor scholarship to the above.

An Exemplary Biography of a Forgotten American.......2001-09-30
Since his achievements as a music publisher are familiar, may I recall that Don Gillespie's biography is a masterpiece of historical recreation--personal and yet factual, detailed and yet thorough--about an obscure but influential music figure in American music a century ago. For those who don't already know, Ward taught Delius, assigned to manage a plantation in northern Florida, more than he learned at the Leipzig music academy a few years later. One charm of Gillespie's book is incorporating his research efforts into the narrative. Indeed, were I a professor of graduate musicology, this is the sort of book I would give to my best students as an example of how to do uniquely valuable scholarship with otherwise forgotten eminences. The awards this book did not receive upon publication are hereby discredited

NYT puzzles.......2007-01-05
For a person who loves the NYT puzzles but found herself squinting and sometimes using a magnifying glass to finish a puzzle- this was the answer.
The puzzles are great and the print is so relaxing. I keep one book next to my favorite chair and the other next to my bed.
Great Stuff!!.......2005-11-30
I bought a BUNCH of these large print New York Times Crossword books for my Mom including this one. She was ardent about solving them and felt they helped her in maintaining her mental powers. I would have to agree on that. The large print really IS large and seemed too big to me at first but they were easier for her to savor and work on at her own pace. They also have puzzles you can subscribe to and receive through the mail. I was surprized and delighted during a visit to see that she and a friend worked on them together. They're a terrific resource for an aging parent and well worth the price for the stimulation !!
Book Description
In 2006, world oil consumption will exceed one thousand barrels per second. The news marks an important change that will have a far-reaching impact on world economies, investments, and business profitability.
In A Thousand Barrels a Second, Chief Energy Economist of ARC Financial Peter Tertzakian examines the future of oil and offers insights into what it will take to rebalance our energy needs and seize new opportunities. He answers the top questions asked by business leaders, policy makers, investors, and concerned citizens as we approach the coming break point:
- Are today's high oil and gas prices part of a routine business cycle, or are there more profound forces at play?
- Are hybrid vehicles our only solution against high gasoline prices?
- Is China's growing thirst for energy sustainable?
- Which government policies work and which do not?
- Will nuclear power and coal save the day-again?
Tertzakian also offers a realistic, informed look into the future of our energy supply chains and how our consumption patterns may evolve, revealing how governments, businesses, and even individuals can meet the coming challenges with better solutions and innovations.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-09-06
I read this book hoping to gain additional knowledge on the commodity called oil and to understand for myself what the supply & demand issues for oil really are.
I got this and a lot more in reading this excellent book. The author really breaks down the topic into easy to understand terms and starts at the beginning with the historic value of oil and works through to current times and the future.
Highlights of this book for me were, the explanation of the history of oil starting back in the 1800's with whale oil and progressing through to kerosene and coal. The parts about Winston Churchill were really fascinating. Also, the examination and discussion of how innovation was key in the transition from the different types of energy - from whale oil, to kerosene, to uranium, to oil and beyond; each times science innovation was key.
I found the charts used very easy to understand and they added a lot to the discussion in the book.
Overall, this is an outstanding book. Very well researched and a great oil and history education.
Energy Masterpiece.......2007-08-04
Peter Tertzakian provides a wake up call to America and the world on the challenges we face with our dependency on energy. While not being an alarmist, he lays out a sobering message that we need to start doing things NOW to prepare for and delay the inevitible "break point" where our supply lines of oil will be severly challenged. He points out that America is in a lot of ways disadvantaged (compared to other nations) by our internal political and societal way we live. The book is wonderfully written, extremely well researched and full of interesting historical facts and figures. I am looking forward to his next book on
very good history, interesting current analysis.......2007-05-20
"A Thousand Barrels a Second," by Peter Tertzakian, starts with a fascinating historical discussion of the rise and fall of whale oil as a fuel for lighting. At first you might wonder about the relevance of whale oil in an analysis of modern energy use, but as you read along, you understand the parallels between the finite resource of whale blubber and the finite resource of "light sweet crude" upon which we depend so much today.
Tertzakian goes on the review the principle of growth, pressure buildup, and then a "break point" as an energy source becomes disadvantaged.
I especially appreciated the concept of the "oil dependency factor" of a given economy. The "oil dependency factor" can be considered as the measure of how much new oil is required to fuel economic growth. Countries like Japan, Britain, and France have taken very conscious efforts to mitigate their oil dependency, and thus have very low oil dependency factors. Countries in the early stages of industrialization, like China and India, exhibit high "oil dependency factors." This concept becomes very useful as you consider diversifying the energy mix in an economy while still allowing economic growth.
Tertzakian continues to make very interesting points as he goes on to discuss the very low probability of our being saved from our horrific energy policy by waiting for a technological "magic bullet."
The author does give some very practical advice for postponing the collapse. He mentions three actions we can do right now do decrease our use of fossil fuels. These require no new technology and could made a big difference in giving society some "breathing room" while we ponder the next steps. These very practical suggestions are:
- lower national speed limits
- raising fuel taxes
- progressive tax of vehicles based on fuel inefficiency
Tertzakian starts to ramble and dream a bit at the end, but on the whole, I found this to be a very readable and informative book with a novel view of the our current energy quagmire.
Energy History.......2007-04-29
Mr. Tertzakian ended up doing a great book. I was afraid that been a investment analist the book could be fullfilled with "do it yourself" advices on transforming the energy-to-be-crisis into profit. Far away. The book is a very interesting analisis of the energy paterns during the last centuries and the probable outcomes in the near future. The first chapters with the evolution of the need for fuels (whale-coal-kerosene-coal gas-oil-??) are strong and very well writen. I guess it is a book that must be read.
Good at the start, esp for newbies, but too sanguine about the future at the end.......2007-03-18
Now, I'm not James Kunstler, predicting we will all be living in caves in 50 years. But, after disavowing magic bullets throughout much of the book, Tertzakian seems more than realistically hopeful, in my opinion, in the last chapter. Read Klare or somebody else for a more sober, and sobering account.
That said, this is a good introductory book to Peak Oil and related issues, especially if you're new to all of this. But, especially if you AREN'T new to the subject, you can do better.
