Not as cool as I thought .......2006-07-14

This is ok I am not going to use the stuff at my work though. I did enjoy the book and I gave the pimp mouse pad to my son. But if I had it to do over I would not have ordered this.

Cubism at its sleaziest.......2006-06-11

Moved into a new cube. I looked around and a few cubes are still Spartan but for the most part you can see where people have over the years brought in ore of there personalities. A few look like this is there real home and the house is just a stopover location.

Being new I do not have a style of my own or time to acquire one so this kit is a quick get off the ground system while I read the book on how to add class to this classless location.

I could swear I saw someone else with a disco ball so I may still be just one of the masses. Mouse pad is a little scrawny but the message is clear.

In the booklet there is an example of the bedroom cubical. It reminded me of the episode in Seinfeld where the bed was installed under the desk.

WARNING: Do not read in your cubicle..........2006-04-06

....you'll probably get fired for laughing too loud. This is immensely entertaining stuff. One of the funniest things I've ever read. I may never get around to turning my cubicle into a barbecue pit (a "barbecuebicle") or a mini dude ranch like the book suggests (with tongue in cheek). But I'll always think of those and all this book's other outlandish cubicle makeover ideas, along with all the painfully funny stuff about life in an office. My girlfriend loved it too and wears the little disco ball that comes with the kit as an earring.

A Retrospective on a Great Western.......2002-08-05

This book is a collection of essays on "The Wild Bunch" written in the late 90s. (When I bought the book, I had thought that the book would include some original reviews and show how attitudes toward "The Wild Bunch" had changed over time.)

Most of the essays are very good. The first, on how the script of the movie took shape, is worth the price of the book itself. Apparently, one can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or at least we movie lovers were extremely lucky.

The only essay that is a dud is the last one, in which the author argues that "The Wild Bunch" is not a great film, that it is too romantic, and that "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" is Peckinpah's real masterpiece. Now, I think PG&BK is a very good movie, but it doesn't hold up as well as "The Wild Bunch" (and I have seen the restored PG&BK.) The idea of including an essay attacking the greatness of a movie that is the inspiration for the book strikes me as odd.

Often misinterpreted because of its graphic violence, the film initially generated considerable controversy. Sam Peckinpah, who made the film after a four-year forced hiatus in his career (he had been blacklisted), created it as a depiction of the savage behavior possible in the post– World War I era. However, the ensuing controversy was not restricted only to the explicit story and images. Producer Phil Feldman’s withdrawal of Peckinpah’s cut of the film drew tremendous sympathy for Peckinpah from American and European film critics alike.

This casebook should be read as a supplement to a viewing of the film, which is now available in its uncut form in video. Edited and with an introduction by Michael Bliss, the book explores the film’s production history, giving an overview of its release problems and highlighting its stylistic characteristics, classic structure, use of the widescreen frame, and innovative editing techniques. It also discusses in detail the film’s underlying moral message and its representation of camaraderie and loyalty. Appreciate the movie The Wild Bunch even more.......2005-10-04

I think that I have read the Best Criticisme on Sam Peckingpah's Wild Bunch, which I bought trough Amazon, about four times. This book is dedicated to Paul Seydor. Very correct because it was he who has been very important for the legacy of the movies from Sam Peckingpah. I enjoyed the crtitics of Robert Culp and the other contributants. After reading this book I saw the movie since then, off course the director's cut, with different eyes.

Great puzzles.......2007-08-18

They definitely come harder than this - don't be scared off by the Mensa logo - but they are challenging and mostly logical. It's hard for many puzzle constructors to follow the loose rules of cryptic crosswords, but Cox and Rathvon do a good job - they're more predictable than British constructors and I think more consistent than average. As in their first book, they write these puzzles with half an eye toward America, even though they are first published in Canada. Thus the "dialect," so to speak, isn't difficult, and I've never come across anything unfamiliar even though I've only been to Canada for a grand total of two weeks.

Disappointing.......2006-09-09

I wish I had read the reader review before I bought this book. The puzzles do, indeed, seem to have been "dumbed down." After the Atlantic Monthly compilation, which I adore, this is a great disappointment.

Mensa? More like Metza........2005-11-04

There are 65 standard cryptics in this book. They all appeared in Canada's National Post. The entries are, by and large, fairly common words. The clues seem to be a little dumbed-down for a broad newspaper audience. This a pretty good collection of standard charades, obvious anagrams, and easy definitions. Few puzzles will take longer than 20 minutes to solve. You'll rarely have to check the answers, and then only for some obscure Canadian place name or celebrity. The "Mensa" title is a bit of a come-on. Emily & Henry's "Atlantic Monthly Cryptic Crosswords" is much more interesting. This one is, frankly:

"As it is, having to to graft selvage is naive. (10)"

The puzzles in this book are delightful gems, half the size (and half the solving time) of regular cryptics, but completely up to Henry Hook's usual standards of trickery and deviousness.

Fine Introduction to the world of Cryptic Crosswords.......2002-01-10

The author indicates how the typical cryptic clue is comprised. There is a definition portion and a wordplay portion. He then goes on to describe the different kinds of wordplays normally used in clueing. Each chapter describes one kind of wordplay. At the end of each chapter, there is a mini crossword that employs that particular wordplay and there are sometimes more exercises based on the wordplays covered so far. The end of the book contains full-sized and increasingly complex crosswords which are a pleasure to solve after the entire book has been read.

The style of writing is very simple and easy to understand also. If you ever wanted to get introduced to cryptic crosswords, there isn't a better alternative than to pick up a copy of this book and get cracking...

Stop looking for magic bullets.......2007-06-08

While Brad Smart offers some good advice for the hiring manager, we must keep in mind that the purpose of TogGrading is to make money for, uh, Brad Smart. It is every hiring manager's responsibility to select the best candidate for a position. Some instinctively do a good job at this, while others are simply clueless. Dr. Smart presents his methodology with a zen-like religious furvor. He insists that if everyone in the organization adopts his methodology and becomes a zealot, the organization will become wildly successful. Isn't pretty to think so. My company jumped on the TogGrading bandwagon three years ago, because we had high turnover in a two departments. Now our hiring process is adruous, time-consuming and expensive. The results? Those managers who had low turnover rates still have low turnover rates. Those who had high turnover rates still have high turnover rates. The bottom line: TopGrading doesn't work any better than any other of the various magic bullet methods hawked to managers over the years. There is no one-size-fits-all methodology for selecting top performers. If your company is failing at attracting and retaining "A players" you'd do better to carefully examine your corporate culture than to jump on the latest fad method. If one manager excels at hiring and retaining good employees, allow him to mentor the managers who don't. This is cheaper and far more effective than turning your HR process upside down and hoping for a miracle cure.

Be objective with your experiences.......2007-03-15

I have been through interview processes with multi-billion dollar firms that were surprisingly casual and not as "hard-hitting" as I would expect. From observing others and recognizing my own experiences and shortcomings, you can tell who are "C" and "A" players. This does not make the "C" player a bad person. Michael Jordan was a "C" in minor league baseball.

Just because someone is a CEO of a Fortune 500 company does not make that same person infalliable. Sometimes CEOs do things that make us scratch our heads, and subsequent events prove us right. (William McCormack at CMS Energy being one.)

Other CEOs bring great growth and enhanced shareholder value. They are worth the big bucks. How much would you pay to someone who increased your company's value by $1 billion?

I was so impressed with this book that I have begun to implement these principles into my suppliers for our company's procurement chain. I'm constructing my own "CIDS" interview, and will seek to have "A" suppliers, removing the "C"s.

The anecdote in the book says it best. A firm will invest a lot of time, effort and energy in buying a $500,000 piece of equipment. But hiring an employee whose impact on the firm can be millions of dollars? "Ah, he interviewed well, so we'll hire him."

Kick the tires during the interview phase. Talk to others for "scuttlebutt". Invest the time up front for big pay-offs later.

Read This Book Today.......2007-03-15

There are many books on the market focused on interviewing techniques and talent selection. Topgrading is the best in this category and I have read many of them. The reason why it is the best is that it takes the reader past "what to do" and teaches them "how to do it". If you are someone like me, looking for a way to hire and coach A players right now, this is the book for you.

Not only have I read both releases of this book, but my colleagues and I have been practicing Topgrading at my company for some time now. By using Dr. Smart's process, we have had significant success in hiring A players and have reaped the rewards of having these high powered recruits on our staff. This is a "must read" for those leaders that want to significantly improve the quality of their workforce.

Let me begin with full disclosure. I've known the author, Dr. Smart, for many years. I know his methodology inside and out.
