    Book Description

Throwing is a skill that many potters try to master at one time or another. It requires patience, time and lots of practice. In Throwing Pots, Phil Rogers takes the reader through the basic principles of throwing, and in step-by-step illustrations shows how to make a wide range of pots from the simple bowl to the more complex forms of teapots and jugs. He also discusses the aesthetics of pottery as well as turning, how to make lids and spouts and where to see fine pots to use as inspiration. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with professional tuition and as a useful guide when practicing alone.

5 out of 5 stars Great short book to get you started in clay.......2002-02-16

I first took this book out of the library, but after wearing out the pages, I decided to buy my own copy. It is logical in its progression of explanations from centering the clay to teapots. The pieces shown in color photography are delicious and gave me lots of ideas for developing my own pots etc. It is short but parallels the descriptions by the teacher in the course I am taking. You will not go wrong with this purchase. It is short which is great too, so it is not overwhelming.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-04-11

This review covers episodes 2 to 4 which are very much alike.

I was delighted with the first one: gone were the womanish, delicate characters so common in other yaoi, replaced by two strong, witty males involved in dangerous adventures.

I do not know why but with her second episode the author, instead of pursuing this fun filled path, gradually making her two men fall for each other, decided to take a very serious turn for melodrama.
Taki has a heart rending -and uninteresting- past that comes back to literally hunt him. Gone are the fun, the humour, the light hearted adventures, replaced by endless tears and guilt, back in the obnoxious routine of a genre made to please romance loving straight women more than gay men.

I guess I should just give up the whole genre...

    5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2007-03-15

Thank you sooo much. I love this series, and it was totally awesome!

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful yaoi.......2006-08-14

Makoto Tateno really knows how to get you into a story and leave you wanting more! It's a great volume in a great series! If you like yaoi, you should buy the whole series! ^_^

    5 out of 5 stars A killer cliffhanger.......2006-05-04

When I started reading YELLOW, I thought, okay, a cute copy of FAKE, sorta like FAKE Lite. But once I start a series, I like to see it through, so I went into Volume 3 with no greater expectations than "they'll wait till Book 4 for the Big Moment between these two".

Well, I was definitely wrong on that point. The author knows how to throw a curve ball when you're expecting a straight pitch, and the cliffhanger at the end of this volume was completely unnerving. With all the "trash yaoi" out there (with the standardized plots and predictable characters), this one is emerging as something on par with FAKE in its own right.

As noted, do NOT start reading the series with this volume. You'll need info from the two previous books for it to make sense and to see how wonderfully the sexual tension is brought up step by step.

5 out of 5 stars THEY DID IT.......2006-04-28

Oh goodness gracios this is the book everyone has been waiting for. Finally Taki believes Goh loves him and they finally share a bed, sadly Taki like has some wierd mental crisis, but they finally did it YAY!!!!!!!! Ok well this was a great book and worth the wait I just cant wait until the fourth one.

From philosophy to blocks to strikes to forms, this book provides more detail than most do-jahngs provide. It's also helpful as a parent that wants to assist my young son as he is learning. Use these to study between classes and you - and your child - will get more out of class. I plan on buying all nine volumes as we progress through the ranks.

A word of caution - make sure you buy the correct volume for the corresponding belt. Volume Nine is for white belt, eight is for orange, seven is yellow, and so on. Also, there are two publication dates for many of these books: 198x and 199x. Be sure to get the new one.

4 out of 5 stars Red Green At His Best.......2005-03-20

This book is hilarious once I sarted reading it I couldnt stop. I eventually hurt myself from laughing so much. This book covers every funny thing associated with middle age life complete with funny illustarions. This book is for anyone and everyone!

                    3 out of 5 stars Not Red's Best Work.......2003-05-16

As the #1 fan of The Red Green show, having watched since the first season, recorded every episode, watched each at least 200 times, own all the DVD's and VHS tape specials, etc... it's hard to say this is not a good book, but it's just not. The humor here is not 'Red Green' it's Steve Smith... it's not geared toward the average middle-aged man, it's geared toward yuppies who would call this 'levity'... So, do yourself a favor, read the sample pages available on this page before you buy the book... it doesn't get any better. I think part of the charm of Steve Smith is his facial expressions... so, written word is out of his element. But maybe I'm just making excuses for him... the fact remains, this book is not in the least bit funny or insiteful. Red Green is funny, Steve Smith is 'witty', but just barely, at that. Steve, stick to what made you famous instead of selling out to the yuppy, office, New York Times crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Fun read, explains the middle ager.......2003-04-22

There are people like me out there, people who are not old. We get a bad rap, which is fine, but then again, we're not old, so we don't really care. However, in this book everyone can get and enjoy a dose of worldly wisdom from Steve Smith, the head honcho from the Public Television show "The Red Green Show."

I admit, I almost didn't give this book five stars. At times the jokes are stale, and the various essays can sometimes be short. However, the total entertainment value is maintained. And really, aren't old people supposed to have stale jokes? ;-)

Sarcasm aside, Steve Smith has a sharp mind and makes great points about getting older. And in a way it helps show us young people that getting old is not something we can dodge, but that it can be done with optimism. Get it, read it, share it.

5 out of 5 stars Canadian Sense Of Humor, Eh?.......2003-03-07

READING IT I found myself laughing aloud in the public space. I know that some liberal, artsy-fartsy Canuck snobs roll their eyes if Red Green's cult TV show is mentioned, but the man has a marvellously wry sense of humor that keeps hitting the mark without ever being offensive. Yet the ugly utilitarian snout of Political Correctness gets smashed to bits too. It's amazing how just the plain old common sense arrived at from the real life observations could make you roar with laughter.
This is the populist humor at its democratic best.
Well, yes. The answer is yes. The Canadians have it. The sense of humor that is. Eh? Eh!

                          Book Description

The multimedia and computer-games industry has exploded in recent years.  Games have gotten incredibly sophisticated—and incredibly entertaining. The programs used to create them have improved also, to the point that you don’t necessarily have to be a nerd deluxe to do it yourself. Even so, game programming can be challenging—even if you’re a veteran C/C++ programmer and licensed technogeek. Challenging, sure…but also incredibly cool.

Using DirectX—the latest and greatest technology for making games on PCs—Windows Game Programming For Dummies will help you write just about any 2D game you can conjure. Now updated to cover new DirectX and Windows releases, your friendly yellow-and-black companion and bonus CD-ROM sidekick will show you:

From graphics to sound to input and installation, legendary game developer and Xtreme Games CEO André LaMothe takes you right into the guts of the game—in an entertaining style that won’t send you retreating to the nearest joystick. André’s witty, he’s tons of fun, and before you know it he’ll have you up to speed on:

The free CD-ROM includes Microsoft DirectX application programming interface SDK v. 8.1; Paint Shop Pro evaluation version; examples, games, and source code from the book; and bonus chapters. So what are you waiting for? If you have C and a dash of C++ under your belt, and have a computer (duh!), you’re all set to get in the game.

3 out of 5 stars So-So book, but you better have your comp with ya.......2006-06-25

This book does have some good parts to it and would be a great starting point to people wanting to get into games. It covers enough to get you going, but sometimes doesn't cover enough to let you expand on what you have learned. Much of the time, i would have to look through the sdk help to figure something out/get a better explaination of some of the stuff in the book.

You can live with that, so why only 3 stars:

                          -1 star:

The book, while seemingly short, packs in quite a bit of information. The author does this by puting the source on a CD instead of listing it in the book. I absolutly hate this because i don't always have access to my computer when i am reading. I can program well enough to see the source, remeber what is going on, and be able to figure out what is going on. Also having the source on CD instead of in the book makes it so you don't ever have to type in the source code. I find that it helps me to remember some stuff if i actually do it (like typing it in. It is nice to have access to the source, to check against if you are having problems though.)

                          -1 more star:

This book is dated, and was dated when it was wrote. When it was wrote, DX8 was out, and DirectDraw and D3D were merged into DirectGraphics. This book uses the DX7 DirectDraw interfaces. With DX9 out now, this has become more outdated.

As an introduction to 2d dx, 2d graphics, and overall game programing, this is pretty good. However, the code doesn't always teach good coding practices, and the engin that is build, while is sufficient, is not of very high calibur.

Try and find a different dx book, preferably written in the past couple years, and not one "for dummies." When you try and dumb something down, especially someting as complex at DX, you always end up missing something. If you already know C++, you are apparently not a dummy, and therefor should get a different book.

4 out of 5 stars To all who don't have a clue about Mr. LaMothe.......2006-05-24

As S. Randall pointed out, some reviewers claim that "Andre is not a real programmer" and made other comments like:

"If you want to write games, develop a solid foundation in C++, program a lot on a daily basis, and go work for a game company, or publish your own games as freeware. Reading a book and poring over somebody else's old-time code won't make you a game developer."

This person is both right and wrong. Yes, Andre's books aren't the most simple of books. Game programming is hard. Very. But I do have to disagree with the last sentence.

I bought Andre's "Tips of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" at the beginning of my freshman year in high school. I had no previous knowledge of programming or anything. But I learned a lot from Andre. His material prepared me for my college education in Game Design. Now, at 21 years of age, I work in the game industry with a starting salary of $40,000.

Tell me to my face that Andre's varying books had nothing to do with me learning my trade and getting a good job.

4 out of 5 stars For the Naysayers:.......2005-03-22

There are many reviewers here who claim Andre Lamothe is not a real programmer, just a guy with a book deal. This cannot be farther from the truth. Here's a snip from an online interview:

Andre LaMothe is CEO of Xtreme Games LLC, and has authored many books on game programming. He has degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering. He has been in computing industry for 20 years and has worked on 2D/3D graphics, Artificial Intelligence, Compiler Design, Robotics Engineering, Virtual Reality, and Telecommunications. He was also the inventor of one of the worlds first virtual reality games.

This book is a great start to anyone interested in game programming with DirectX.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on this subject.......2004-09-25

This book is one of the best books about game programming. Even as a newbie you have a good and easy way to learn a lot about game programming, you don't need much pre-knowledge. It's a good balance between a simple entry and advanced programming-technics.
The style is nice and the examples are easy to understand and big enough to become a master of game programming. And last but not least: Every $ is a good investment because the structure of this book is very well for learning every other project which the novice want to do for himself or some customers.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2004-04-04

The book starts out great, with clear step-by-step explanations about everything. One really begins to feel like they're getting somewhere. However, just over half way through, the author abandons this step-by-step approach and dumps a massive 'library' of code in front of you with little explanation, and leaves you for dead. From here, one is expected to tinker with the existing code, making alterations as necessary to fit one's own idea for a game. A very disappointing conclusion to what started out as a great book.

China has the world's most rapidly changing large economy, and according to Ted Fishman, it is forcing the world to change along with it. "No country has ever before made a better run at climbing every step of economic development all at once," he writes, in China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World. China is currently the largest maker of toys, clothing, and consumer electronics, and is swiftly moving up the ladder in car production, computer manufacturing, biotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications, and other sectors thanks to low-cost, high-tech factories. China is also where the world is investing. In 2004, for instance, the city of Shanghai alone attracted over $12 billion in direct foreign investment, roughly the same amount as all of Indonesia and Mexico received. In tracing China's ascendancy over the past 30 years (with annual growth of an astonishing 9.5 percent), Fishman presents a flood of facts, figures, forecasts, and anecdotes and examines the implications of this unprecedented growth for China, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Calling China's huge population "arguably the greatest natural resource on the planet," Fishman details how hundreds of millions of peasants have migrated from rural to urban areas to find manufacturing jobs, providing an unlimited, low-wage workforce to power China's economy. In the process, this shift has changed both Chinese culture and the global business climate in significant ways. Simply put, American companies can't compete with wages as low as 25 cents an hour and lack of regulation and oversight, so are forced to move their operations to China or completely change the focus of their business. And it's not just a problem for the U.S.--even Mexico is outsourcing to China. Though it remains to be seen whether this will truly be the "Chinese Century" as Fishman asserts, China, Inc. is a brisk and informative look at why so many American corporations, and American jobs, are heading to China. --Shawn Carkonen

                          Book Description

China today is visible everywhere -- in the news, in the economic pressures battering the globe, in our workplaces, and in every trip to the store. Provocative, timely, and essential -- and updated with new statistics and information -- this dramatic account of China's growing dominance as an industrial superpower by journalist Ted C. Fishman explains how the profound shift in the world economic order has occurred -- and why it already affects us all.

How has an enormous country once hobbled by poverty and Communist ideology come to be the supercharged center of global capitalism? What does it mean that China now grows three times faster than the United States? Why do nearly all of the world's biggest companies have large operations in China? What does the corporate march into China mean for workers left behind in America, Europe, and the rest of the world?

Meanwhile, what makes China's emerging corporations so dangerously competitive? What will happen when China manufactures nearly everything -- computers, cars, jumbo jets, and pharmaceuticals -- that the United States and Europe can, at perhaps half the cost? How do these developments reach around the world and straight into all of our lives?

These are ground-shaking questions, and China, Inc. provides answers.

Veteran journalist Ted C. Fishman shows how China will force all of us to make big changes in how we think about ourselves as consumers, workers, citizens, and even as parents. The result is a richly engaging work of penetrating, up-to-the-minute reportage and brilliant analysis that will forever change how readers think about America's future.

How has an enormous country once hobbled by poverty and Communist ideology come to be the supercharged center of global capitalism? What does it mean that China now grows three times faster than the United States? That China uses 40 percent of the world's concrete and 25 percent of its steel? What is the global impact of 300 million rural Chinese walking off their farms and heading to the cities in the greatest migration in human history? Why do nearly all of the world's biggest companies now have large-scale operations in China? What does the corporate march into China mean for workers left behind in America, Europe, and the rest of the world? Meanwhile, what makes China's emerging corporations so dangerously competitive? What could happen when China will be able to manufacture nearly everything -- computers, cars, jumbo jets, and pharmaceuticals -- that the United States and Europe can, at perhaps half the cost? How do these developments reach around the world and straight into the lives of all Americans? These are ground-shaking questions, and China, Inc. provides answers.Veteran journalist and former commodities trader Ted C. Fishman paints a vivid picture of the megatrends radiating out of China. Fishman's account begins with the burgeoning output of China's vast low-cost factories and the swelling appetite of its 1.3 billion consumers, both of which are being driven by historically unprecedented infusions of foreign capital and technological know-how. Traveling through China's frenetic landscape of growth, Fishman visits the factories, markets, streets, stores, towns, and cities where the story of Chinese capitalism is being lived by one-fifth of all humanity. Fishman also draws on interviews with Chinese, American, and European workers, managers, and executives to show how China will force all of us to make big changes in how we think about ourselves as consumers, workers, citizens, and even as parents. The result is a richly engaging work of penetrating, up-to-the-minute reportage and brilliant analysis that will forever change how readers think about America's future. "

2 out of 5 stars Lacks critical analysis, nothing more than a collection of (incomplete) stories .......2007-09-04

Half of the book is like a PR campaign for Shanghai, saying how fascinating the city is without really critically examining its glories. It seems like the author has not ventured far away from Shanghai (even Zhejiang Province is bordering Shanghai) and to really delve into the rest of China. It is just like reading a book on U.S. economy while all it talks about is New York. Projecting New York for the rest of the U.S. is laughable, so is thinking Shanghai epitomizes the entire China.

Shanghai's success, at least in the past, critically relied on the extremely favorable national policies steered by Jiang Ze-ming, the former mayor of Shanghai who became the president after 1989 Tiananmen. Such biased national policies are highly questionable, and its impact on Shanghai long-term economic sustainability is also open for debate.

It's also weird for a book on China's economic transition to exclude meaningful discussion of the economic reforms in the Pearl River Delta area where all of the initial economic reforms started, and which is still one of the most important economic regions in China. Also, China's attempts to balance economic development between the coastal region and the inland region are largely ignored in the book (except some very light discussions here and there).

The second half of the book is not very organized and it is not clear what message the author was trying to get across. Overall, the book is nothing more than a collection of stories you can easily find in Economist. A better book for a quick intro and analysis of China's rise is The World is Flat, side by side is an analysis of India as a bonus...

3 out of 5 stars Could have been at least 100 pages shorter.......2007-07-15

A lot of insights from the book but at the same time a lot of non-insights.

The book covers the movement of Chinese people from the farms to the cities and the attitude towards rapid modernization including piracy. However, you cannot FEEL it from first person point of view. You feel very detached reading the book.

It could have been more straight to the point and a lot of pages bored me.

This a kaleidoscopic view of the most dynamic country today on the planet. Sit down, strap up, and read the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test of the 21st Century. For a harder analytical edge, read my own volume The Coming China Wars: Where They Will Be Fought and How They Can Be Won

1 out of 5 stars Please blame everything on China, is this a new trend to cover up American "disastrous" foreign policy? .......2007-05-11

                          So with all due respect:

                          1) If China is so bad, don't do business there, no one is forcing you
                          2) All American CEO who deals with China are unpatriotic Americans
                          3) All American CEO who outsource to China and India are immoral capitalist
                          4) All American CEO who deal with China should pay a fine or go to Jail. -But they are not! And as matter of facts, they are getting big bonuses.
                          5) Don't blame the Chinese, they are providing a service (cheap) but American consumers and executives are the ones knocking on their doors.
                          6) You can't have both ways; you can't try to use cheap labor in 3rd world countries and then turn around and point fingers at the people you are doing business with.

                          7) Stop bringing up the WWII theory on some of these comments, just because the USA fought and won WWI -which is GREAT! It does not mean the USA is correct FOREVER...common sense.

My team at work does a lot of business with China and after one of the engineers read the book, we ordered about 15 copies for the entire department to read, we felt it was so worthwhile!
