Book Description
"A book of correspondence between two highly talented friends*writer/critic/artist John Berger and filmmaker/artist John Christie*I Send You This Cadmium Red began in concept in February 1997, when Christie mused to Berger: 'What could our next project be?' Berger replied: 'Just send a color ' Soon after, a painted square of cadmium red crossed the English Channel, from Christie in London to Berger in France, and an amazing conversation began. The accompanying book reveals, in the form of letters, notes, small books, and drawings, their subsequent exchange of ideas on color*an visual odyssey that ranges from Matisse's blue to the blue of Yves Klein; from industrial brown anti-rust paint to Joseph Beuys' Braunkreuz, from mysterious cave paintings to Byzantine gold leaf. Unprecedented and engaging, aesthetically stunning and intellectually enlightening, I Send You This Cadmium Red both explores new OEays of seeing' and provides a key to understanding the work of these two artists."

Treasured Communication.......2004-06-12
Sometimes a resonant voice leaps off a bookshelf and whispers promises. This book both whispered and sang to me and fulfilled my hunger eyes. I read it, leisurely in one sitting, but I can imagine going back to touch it or rather fondle it, again, and then again. Two voices, not as one, but as a seamless whole is what delighted me in finding "Send me a Cadmium Red" and caused a profound artful ripple in my otherwise quiet day. Colour excites, cadmium red excites twice over and if I could I would gather together my own loose threads and follow the course of these two fine friends and send a single swatch of colour that would stir them to respond.
The Colors of Communication.......2001-05-31
In this compilation of correspondence between two erudite artist/writers, the reader is allowed to eavesdrop on the communications of John Berger and John Christie. These are two real renaissance men, interested in everything and commenting on all to each other with such intelligence and candor that we are compelled to read further, taking joy in their knowledge of color, art history, bookmaking, and literature. The book is obviously put together with the input of the book artist, with covers and pages you must touch, luscious color, fold-outs, and lovely photographs of the hand written letters, the books, and even the envelopes that traveled between the two men. The insight into their personal lives and their friendship adds an irresistible dimension. This bok is a must for anyone interested in art in any form.
The Golden Mean.......2001-03-18
Like a bee, under vibrating equilibrium and full of gold : thats the emotion felt after reading this colorfull-voices.

Book Description

Book Description
America's favorite crypto-zoological hominid is hilariously recast as the modern-day everyman, struggling with eating disorders, casual cannibalism, pop culture, and philosophical quandaries ("Me once believe in good. Now, no. World go shit, just like Bigfoot screenwriting career").
Customer Reviews:
The Secret Life of Bigfoot Revealed!.......2007-07-21
Celebrity autobiography is a strange, unique genre unto its own. Maybe it's because most celebrities don't have a particular knack for writing, meaning that one of two things happen: they work with a ghostwriter who "cleans up" the language and makes the book sound nothing like the supposed author, or the celebrity writes it on their own and it's wonderfully incomprehensible, just like them. I think that's just one of the many reasons why Graham Roumieu's In Me Own Words: The Autobiography of Bigfoot is so utterly brilliant. You don't get much more of a dead-on parody than this.
Bigfoot's lived a long and troubled life, and at last he's ready to share the details. From his friendship with Koko the talking gorilla, to his time in Hollywood, to the tragic death of Denis, anything and everything is finally laid out in the open for all to see. Witness the rise and fall of an American icon. And, as an added bonus: poetry!
Roumieu writes In Me Own Words as a series of short essays by Bigfoot about his life, and it's hard to pick a favorite. Is it the tales of Bigfoot and Koko's friendship soon after Bigfoot's divorce where we learn about Koko's secret fetish? Or maybe it's Bigfoot talking about why he sold his condo and moved thanks to those evil squirrels and their slide whistles that they'd play all hours of the night. And then there's Denis... poor, poor Denis. Roumieu writes Bigfoot's voice as a beautiful combination of innocence and stupidity, and it's hard to not mentally generate a specific sound for the narration as the book moves on in strange and bizarre new directions. Each little anecdote is funny in its own right, but the combination of them all together makes In Me Own Words laugh-out-loud funny.
You can't talk about In Me Own Words without also mentioning Roumieu's gorgeous watercolor paintings. Roumieu paints Bigfoot as a hulking oaf, the perfect match to the character's writing. Each page is a combination of Bigfoot's hand-written scrawl and a matching illustration, from grinning squirrels to hamsters in toy cars. As strange as the writing in In Me Own Words gets, the illustrations are even more so. It's hard to not boggle at images of Bigfoot with his baseball cap and chains "chillin with [his] homies", or playing guitar in a rock band complete with long hair and flannel shirt. Roumieu's writing is near-perfect for In Me Own Words, but it's his art that completes the package into something truly unique.
In Me Own Words is one of those very rare books which is funny not once or twice, but every time you read it. Every time you pull the book out, you're going to start laughing, even stronger than before. It's just that good. Despite the holidays being two months away, if you're looking for that perfect gift for someone I know just what you need. Just buy two copies, because once you get a look at it you'll want to keep one for yourself.
big foot great.......2007-07-17
A sincere and honest look at Big Foot. The reader is left with a well rounded understanding of the Foot, not the usual tabloid hype. Text is enhanced by evocative drawings of Big Foot. Warning -this book is not for the humor challenged.
At Last...Me Soulmate!.......2007-06-21
Oh Bigfoot! You make me heart go pit-a-pat-pit-a-pat-pit-a-pat-pat-a-pat-pat-a-pat-pat-pat-pattaty-pat!
Where you be hiding? You so coy.
(Me shake finger at you.)
So brilliant with you words! So feisty (you naughty, naughty boy...that GOOD)! So sexy (big, stinky fella' do it for me every time)!
And you so sensitive (soul of poet you smash and eat with ketchup and side of horseradish)!
You be me private dancer any day.
Love!
Love!!!
Me say LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You call me? ;]
Worth Peeing-Your-Pants .......2007-05-11
If you like twisted humor and demented ranting, considered yourself apart of this new Bigfoot cult. Bigfoot writes and rambles about his everyday mishaps and experiences in life. Short like a childrens' book but not short on pee-your-pants laughter. This book might make a great coffee table book, something you'll wanna share with all your the little wierdos in your life. }(;D>
Read this out loud. I dare you........2007-05-02
My brother had both of the "Bigfoot" books out on his coffee table, and i picked this one up...'cause it didn't quite fit in with the usual art-books-on-the-coffee-table routine. He said, "Dude, open that to any page. Read it out loud." I got about two sentences out. Same thing on the next page, and the one after. Haven't laughed so hard since the "Shut Your %$# Face, Uncle @#$" song from the "South Park" movie. This book (and its partner, "Me Write Book") is that funny. Hell, the riff on Chewbacca is worth the cover price.
Book Description
When every hiccup sounds like the call of doom, each stomach pang hints at incipient cancer, and a headache means it's time to firm up your last will and testament, The Hypochondriac's Guide to Life. And Death. provides just the relief you need. Gene Weingarten has spent his whole life immersed in the eclectic details of bizarre symptoms, self-diagnosing every minor ache as a potentially deadly disease. Weingarten examines:
- The mind of a hypochondriac
- How your doctor can kill you
- Ulcers and other visceral fears
- The snaps, crackles, and pops of your body that spell disaster
- Things that can take an eye out
- Interpreting DocSpeak
Blending the neurotic anxieties of Woody Allen, the folksiness of Garrison Keillor, and the absurdist vision of Dave Barry, Gene Weingarten conjures up a hilarious prescription for the hypochondriac that lurks inside all of us.
Customer Reviews:
Truly a great read.......2007-03-02
Despite the macabre subject matter, this is a hilarious book. I laughed out loud many, many times. And while it may, indeed, feed a true hypochondriac's neurosis, it can also show just how obnoxiously far you can take it. I will admit that even I (not so much a hypochondriac) took a few of the `tests' presented in the book. I evidently have about a half-dozen serious medical conditions...
If you like Dave Barry, you'll like this book.
Great entertainment........2007-01-05
Warning... this is not for the paranoid, for those that read every bad bio-terrorisim book out there then wonder if they've contracted Ebola, or for those who call emergency when they've stubbed their toe thinking it's fleah eating cancer....
Great book full of witty looks at all the medical disasters that can kill ya...
It is well written, funny, well organised and lends itself to reading to friends and relatives who enjoy combining a lack of medical background with pure paranoia. Keep a copy around for flu season...
hit and miss.......2006-11-06
Several laugh out loud moments. Weingarten's newspaper column is funnier than this book. I love the column. The book isn't bad.
If you truly want to sample Weingarten at his best read his column.
Will cure you.......2006-03-28
Gene Weingarten used to be Dave Barry's editor at The Miami Herald. Enough said.
most hilarious book i have came across.......2005-02-21
i brought this book from a warehouse sale not knowing that i got a gem! it's real funny even when i re-read it! even my bf who doesn't enjoy reading read it n laughed out loud!
Customer Reviews:
Hypochondriacs, don't read this book!.......2007-03-18
If you're not a hypochondriac before you read the "Hypochondriac's Guide" you will be by the time you finish it. Who among us doesn't hiccup, eat vegetables, or experience the occasional twitch in an eyelid?
According to Weingarten, all of these seemingly harmless activities can lead to our imminent demise, accompanied by horrible pain and distressing body noises.
For instance, the only place where we probably can't get cancer is the lens of our eye.
Then there is this really gross tumor called a "teratoma" that can have teeth and hair. If you ever bit the head off of one of those ugly little Smurf® dolls when you were a kid (or as part of a fraternity initiation rite when you were still a kid but had the body of an adult), then picture it as wandering to a sensitive portion of your anatomy and MUTATING!!!
Whew!
Even the author had trouble finding anything humorous about cancer. He tried asking an oncologist, "So, Doctor, what's funny about cancer?"
"'Let's see,' [the oncologist] said. `Humor. OK, what is the difference between Sloan-Kettering and Shea Stadium?'
"Dunno, I said.
"'At Sloan-Kettering, the mets always win.'
"Ha ha, I said. What?
"'See, `mets' is an abbreviation for `metastasis,' which is a cancer that has spread systemically from one organ or system to another.'
"Ah.
"A desperate silence filled the room."
I suppose if I had to stagger off of this mortal coil, "beer potomania" wouldn't be such a bad way to go (compared to most of the other diseases in this book). People who drink in excess of eight quarts of beer per day can accumulate too much water in their blood (I guess the liver hogs all of the beer), which leads to confusion, lethargy, and death.
Moral: don't mix water with your beer.
The low point of the "Hypochondriac's Guide" might be Chapter 20, "Oh, Crap (Diagnosis by the Process of Elimination)," wherein the author interviews a gastroenterologist who specializes in flatulence. This is the chapter I quoted most extensively to my friends.
Amazon.com won't let me quote the same passages for you, so buy this book and read it.
If you'd like to learn more about the author, Gene Weingarten, read Dave Barry's introduction before taking the plunge into Chapter 01, and figuring out which disease is going to take you down the drain.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2003-11-13
The IFP/WEST Filmmakers Manual walks you through the line producing responsibilities of the movie SWINGERS. Written with detailed information including example budgets, call sheets and production notes. The book also provides useful situational anecedotes from the production.
This is the best resource for production management in independent filmmaking I have found to date.
Very Good Resource for Creative Producers of Indie Films.......2003-01-27
For the aspiring producer of independent films, the "IFP/West Independent Filmmaker's Manual" is a great book to read. It gives the reader a solid overview of virtially every stage of the production process.
With the production of "Swingers" still fresh in their minds, writers Nicole Shay LaLoggia and Eden H. Wurmfield give the reader an insider's view of making that all important first film. Although "Swingers" was made on a tiny budget and without the benefit of the Screen Actors Guild's new low budget agreements, the film proved successful within a fiercely competitive independent film market.
These producers had what it takes to get a small film made without the benefit of a big budget or big name stars. Since most of the readers of this book are probably starting off in a similar situation, their insights are especially helpful. Veteran producers (while the writers may be considered veterans now) often lose touch with what it's like to be a new producer.
It's also important to note that these producers simply did not roll over and die after making, "Swingers." At this writing, Eden H. Wurmfeld is a finalist for the Motorola Producer's Award, part of the IFP's Independent Spirit Awards for "Kissing Jessica Stein" and "Fanci's Persuasion." In short, these producers are out there in the trenches and speak from not just knowledge, but experience.
A very helpful feature of the book are a series of checklists, to remind the producer of his or her daily responsibilities. Producing is a high pressure job that is very detail orientated. I wish this resource had been available when I started producing a few years before this book was published.
On the two CD-ROMs included (one formatted for PCs, the other for Macs), you get a series of very worthwhile extras. This includes an ample supply of production forms and interviews with prominent people in the independent film world. The interviews include Geoffrey Gilmore (Sundance Film Festival), Kasi Lemmons (writer/director of "Eve's Bayou," the #1 independent film of 1997), Kevin Smith (writer/director of "Clerks), Jon Favreau ("Swingers") and Billy Bob Thornton ("Slingblade"). Also included are interviews with veteran producers Ted Hope and Christine Vachon. These are all great for the independent filmmaker, particularly if you're trying to make deeply personal films to play at film festivals and on the "art house" circuit. If you're just interested in making B-grade genre films, these will be less helpful.
My one complaint about the included production forms is that they include a navigational box at the upper left hand corner that says, "Return to Contents," that can't be removed unless you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat.
LaLoggia and Wurmfeld's book demystifies the role of the "creative producer" on independent feature films. However, if you're interested in a nuts and bolts book on the role of a "line producer" (which is essentially a production manager and not one who develops a project from scratch), this book may still be beneficial, but perhaps less so. This is also true for people interested solely in producing mass market films for the major studios. If you don't yet know the difference or are trying to figure out which way to go, this book is a great jumping off point.
Dive in, the water's fine.
Most Disappointing.......2002-04-24
This book was a big disappointment. It seems half the pages are just print outs of forms, budgets, etc. The information tucked between the pages of forms is the same stuff found in many more comprehensive and readable books. It seemed to be written by a computer, not a person. The index is weak as is the glossary. These folks made one movie and thought they could tell the rest of the world how it's done. The hubris is only exceeded by the vapidity. Sent mine back for a refund.
No Kevin Smith interviews, Pleeeeeze........2000-09-12
The idea of an interview with Kevin Smith being a "bonus" is not appealing. Gimme REAL directors like Sydney Lumet or Jane Campion.
Useful For Some.......2000-02-29
I was slightly disappointed by this book. But I had heard so much hype about it that anything short of a divine masterpiece was going to be a let-down. I will however strongly recommend this book to someone who is knowledgable about film, has a worthwhile project, and wants to know how to get it off the ground because what the authors do is detail how they went about making their indie film Swingers. Many will find this useful as it will tell you how to go about organizing, scheduling, budgeting, and then shooting your project. Anything you could possibly need to know is discussed. The one thing that I found the most enjoyable though was the cd it comes with that contains interviews with Kevin Smith (director of Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma) and others.
Book Description
Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller was a 2004 SEBA Book Award finalist, and a 2004 Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller is an inventive and original book from Nashville singer/songwriter Chapman, who uses twelve of her most resonant songs as entry points to many of her life's adventures. Not a memoir, but a map of the places Chapman's been and what went through her mind as she was traveling there, this book is funny and tender, warm and exuberant. Raised a debutante in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the daughter of a mill owner and firmly part of proper society, Chapman became a rocker at a time when women weren't yet picking up electric guitars. She is "a living example," as one reviewer wrote, "of the triumph of rock and roll over good breeding."From New Year's Eve in 1978 when Jerry Lee Lewis gave Chapman advice on how to live life ("I mean it's one thing when your mother says 'Honey don't you think you'd better slow down?' But when The Killer voices his concern....") to the time her black maid Cora Jeter took the seven-year-old to see Elvis, Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller goes to the moments when the influences on Chapman's songwriting and psyche were cemented. And it winningly reveals how the creative process comes from life: one of Chapman's favorite songs was written after waking up facedown in her underpants in her front-yard vegetable garden. Revealing intimate rock and roll moments and memories of a South Carolina childhood, Marshall Chapman is a fresh voice firmly in the Southern tradition.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly enjoyed!.......2007-01-22
The story behind the music... Marshall Chapman can write, sing, play guitar, and keep a person thoroughly entertained.
A Life In Songs.......2006-03-01
Marhall Chapman's account of her song by song journey to becoming one of the most innovative and thrilling country rock songwriter-singers is as funny and poignant a book as I've read in some time. From the trouble she got into in grade school for channeling Elvis in the hall to her defiance of Nashville songwriting formulae she kept raising the question, "Why Can't I Be Like Other Girls?" Thank the lord that was the only thing she couldn't do because she sure did everything else. Each chapter of this memoir tells the story of the experience underlying one of her songs so the songs record her life in more ways than one. And some life it is, sometimes on the edge, sometimes ecstatic (when these were not one and the same), never boring. A reader who does not live through it with Marshall is missing something about the South, something about country rock music and something about life.
Rhythm and words.......2004-12-13
Marshall has written a fantastic account of how songs come to be, framing the incredible cast of characters which has surrounded her for all her years in Nashville. The photos of Andy Warhol, Arnold Schwarznegger et al really bring everything to life even more. on the must-have list for anyone interested in the triupmph of rock and roll over good breeding!
Great songwriter, great memoir.......2004-02-02
Marshall Chapman's book is like her music: funny, tough, poignant, real, alive and searingly honest. For those of us who grew up in the south in the 50's and 60's, it's a fond reminder of all that we experienced; for everyone else it's just a darn good read.
how did I miss her?.......2004-01-26
Not sure how I've lived in the same region all these years and been a fan of underground country, but hadn't heard of Marshall Chapman! Now I'll be on the look-out! I definitely enjoyed the book and think it's great that she has been able to share all these stories with us. She's lived a very colorful life and it's interesting enough to be enjoyable to others. She gets a little side-tracked at times, but I don't think we expect her to be an award-winning author. Great read!

Book Description
Bring the miracle of Lean Six Sigma improvement out of manufacturing and into services
Much of the U.S. economy is now based on services rather than manufacturing. Yet the majority of books on Six Sigma and Lean--today's major quality improvement initiatives--explain only how to implement these techniques in a manufacturing environment.
Lean Six Sigma for Services fills the need for a service-based approach, explaining how companies of all types can cost-effectively translate manufacturing-oriented Lean Six Sigma tools into the service delivery process.
Filled with case studies detailing dramatic service improvements in organizations from Lockheed Martin to Stanford University Hospital, this bottom-line book provides executives and managers with the knowledge they need to:
- Reduce service costs by 30 to 60 percent
- Improve service delivery time by 50 percent
- Expand capacity by 20 percent without adding staff
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview.......2007-09-09
I found this book very well written and easy to understand. Although repetitive at times Mr. George did a good job of explaining both Lean and Six Sigma concepts along with some case studies.
Like I said; A good overview without all the details.
Does not deliver.......2007-05-18
This book does not deliver on its promise.
Though the author may have a lot of experience in manufacturing, it is clear that his knowledge of the services business is very limited. The concepts of six sigma and lean production are very roughly adapted for the service business, to the point that some of the examples result blatantly absurd -- e.g. the one in page 32.
Other very annoying aspect of the book is the number of times the author keeps returning to points such as "why lean needs six sigma and six sigma needs lean", "why services need lean six sigma" etc. The pace of the reading keeps being broken by this endless "commercial breaks".
After being utherly disapointed by George`s book I`m looking for another book on the same subject. Will post another review, here, if I find one that delivers on its promisses.
a must read.......2007-05-13
LSS in the context of service organizations, this is a must read. Highly exceptional introduction with practical examples. the layout of the information provides an organized roadmap for familiarization.
Great blend of Lean & Six Sigma.......2007-05-08
I found this book very practical and well integrated across the Six Sigma and Lean disciplines. Case studies illustrate every principle throughout the book. I have marked mine up with highlights and use it as a reference on a regular basis. It's not the universe of knowledge on either discipline, but is a good synthesis of the two, and helpful for finding the right tools for the problem and accomplishing project goals.
Very Helpful.......2007-03-08
This book is exceedingly helpful in explaining sometimes difficult concepts and providing an integrated, practical framework with which to implement the Lean Six Sigma methodology within a service business. I bought a copy for each of my key staff members and we worked through it together, profiting greatly from the experience.
