Jam is one of those books you just want to have. Inside, contemporary illustration, fashion design, computer art, sculpture, photography, painting, graphic design, and product design from London and Tokyo define what is essentially urban for our age, from a limited-edition record player from the Japanese musician-artist Cornelius to sexy illustrations of young urbanites by London artist Graham Rounthwaite. Rather than solely promoting a vapid aesthetic, Jam presents what is thought-provoking, choosing to embed itself in the present rather than gearing up to evaporate tomorrow. This work, organized into four simple sections--e-mail, the work, the interviews, then the contact information for the artists--is wrapped in a book that is beautifully made. The cover, as well as the pages that contain the interviews, are on brown paper printed with fluorescent, silver, and brown ink, beautifully designed; the images are on dense, thin, glossy paper, beautifully printed. --Juliette Cezzar

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but a bit over my head........2003-01-29

Okay, I only bought this book because it was recommended with the Fruits book on Japanese teen fashion. It looked interesting and wasn't that expensive.

I think the contents of this book is a bit over my head. In my spare time I am a web designer who does some graphics work, so I am not completely without artistic abilities. Some of the works in the book is very neat to look at. But others just left me scratching my head and questioning the intended message. The printing of the book is exceptional, as you would expect. I keep it on my coffee table just to see what other people have to say about the book.

5 out of 5 stars oh my god!.......2002-12-20

I honestly believe that someday soon this book will replace the bible as a source for inspiration.

2 out of 5 stars ho-hum.......2002-02-16

nicely designed, but shallow book about a non-existant connection in contemporary culture.

5 out of 5 stars A feast for the eyes.......2001-12-10

Who would suspect beneath a bland brown paper cover that such an amazing collection of art exists! Inside is an incredible collection of cutting edge digital art and lush photography. A beautiful collection of contemporary art. The back also has extensive interviews with the artists.

The champagne of art books.

A must have for the digital art enthusiast or the commercial art guru on your list!

      Book Description

Yellow Volume 2 marks the return of our heroes Goh and Taki to infiltrate the Japanese narcotics trade. This time, they're after your garden variety heroin that's being "floated" to Japan in a most unique way. Bullets will fly and Goh and Taki - preoccupied with their budding relationship and the reappearance of past flames - may not be able to avoid the crossfire!

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-04-11

This review covers episodes 2 to 4 which are very much alike.

I was delighted with the first one: gone were the womanish, delicate characters so common in other yaoi, replaced by two strong, witty males involved in dangerous adventures.

I do not know why but with her second episode the author, instead of pursuing this fun filled path, gradually making her two men fall for each other, decided to take a very serious turn for melodrama.
Taki has a heart rending -and uninteresting- past that comes back to literally hunt him. Gone are the fun, the humour, the light hearted adventures, replaced by endless tears and guilt, back in the obnoxious routine of a genre made to please romance loving straight women more than gay men.

I guess I should just give up the whole genre...

      5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2007-03-15

Thank you sooo much. I love this series, and it was totally awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Yellow is a perfect BL title!.......2006-02-25

I LOVE this manga! I can barely wait to read the end. The author has very well-drawn men... and the main characters are totally captivating. And I have to admit I have a thing for cute BOYS, so since there are so many of them in this manga, it's probably another reason why I love it even more. Goh's ex, for example, is a real cutie! And guess what's Taki's reaction!
In volume 02, a new and interesting character is introduced, who kinda looks like Sukisyo's Matsuri... and just as infuriating, so to say.
A great sequel to volume 1... neither volume let me down so far. I'm highly expecting volume 3, which should be out soon, to be EVEN better!
A recommended title, and I really like this publisher, so there are hardly problems with the translation&co!

      5 out of 5 stars Ideal Yaoi.......2006-02-22

This series is my ideal yaoi, no comparison. I can only speak for the second volume, but it really doesn't matter what the other two books are like, this one just rocks so much. If you like yaoi, it's definitely worth getting.

The best part is the art, the dialogue is ok, (eg. Taki: "You bring men here all the time." Goh: "Men are okay!! I'm a man, you're a man, this is a castle of men!!!"), and the story is, well, it's not the most important thing. Ok, I'll admit, it's a bit of a stretch that these two guys are partners in some weird agency, that they're living together, and that one of them is gay and the other straight (supposedly). But seriously, I would be willing to accept anything for these two. What great yaoi love!

4 out of 5 stars Worthy successor to _Fake_.......2006-01-29

I've been rather disappointed with some of the yaoi manga I've picked up lately, but this one is most definitely an antidote to the bad ones.

Like _Fake_, there are two partners, Goh and Taki, one (Goh) with an unrequited interest in the other (Taki). They aren't cops, though, they're professional thieves of a sort, stealing from the bad guys to help out the good guys. Both have mysterious pasts that are teasingly hinted at here and there, deep dark secrets that threaten to be horrifying but not so much that you aren't eager to know, to see what shaped these guys into the men they are today.

Apparently they've only been working together for a year or so, but they love each other so much, and not necessarily in *that* way. Taki has no problem admitting his feelings for Goh, because it's the love one friend has for another, and it's a sentiment Goh shares completely. The problem is, he's also *in* love with Taki, and Taki is 100% straight. Angst ensues, and it's beautifully tragic.

I love how these two interact with each other, the complete trust and friendship, the way Goh won't quit trying to cop a feel and the way he always ends up with Taki's gun/fist/knife in his face for daring to do so -- and he never once takes offense at it. It's all a part of the way they communicate and it's *fun*! And Taki isn't as immune to Goh as he likes to think he is. There's an attraction there, and eventually love of the in sort, but it's one born from deep friendship, not base lust. It's interesting to watch Taki work his way towards that realization, and he's not completely there yet.

For guys with such shadowed pasts, their characters are rather well developed. You get a very good idea of what kind of men they are just from their present interactions and dialogue. I'm sure that learning their pasts will make them even more well rounded, but this is a pretty darn good start. The secondary characters are being fleshed out a bit more slowly, but that's to be expected since they don't have as much "screen time." If things continue as they are, all of the characters will probably become wonderfully three-dimensional.

The artwork is excellent. I like my men to look like men, not prepubescent boys, and both Goh and Taki look like real men. The boys Goh sleeps with are really boys (sixteen or so, usually, which might be a red flag for some people depending on their moral preferences) and they're drawn that way. All of the men -- and women, for that matter -- in the manga *look* like adult men and women, which is so hard to come by these days in yaoi.

The only caveat I have (and the reason it didn't get five stars) is that the plot seems to be a bit thin in most of the stories. In a couple it was pretty good, but for the most part the plot feels more like a sketch than a fully fleshed out story. I'm hoping that'll change in future manga, but for now it's a slight drawback to an otherwise well done series.

This manga was a pleasant surprise and I'm eager to see the next one in the series. As with _Fake_, this is one series I'd recommend buying, not just borrowing from someone. This one's a keeper.

If you're going to invest several hundred dollars in a resource of this magnitude, you are serious about what you're doing. I know I am. Here's a hint: instead of buying these heavy volumes, go instead to literarymarketplace.com and subscribe to the electronic version. The cost is comparable, but with the online version you can instantly make custom databases of the contacts that matter most to you. I ran a search on "book reviewers" in the online version, and inside of an hour I had a database of over 350 book reviewers to instantly merge into form letters in MS Word. Viola! Imagine how long that would take to key in. Yikes. Also, you know that everything is updated regularly. Give them a call and convince them and ask for a free trial.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference! -- (but not the only reference).......2001-04-30

The LMP seems to contain by and far the most complete and organized lists of book (and other media) publishers. If you're serious about publishing just about any type of work, the LMP is a very good place to start. I learned about the LMP via a book by Rudy Shur titled "How To Publish Your Nonfiction Book" in which he describes how to use the LMP to obtain your list of potential publishers in conjunction with other references, including the Writer's Market. While the LMP contains thousands of publishers, cross-referencing them in the Writer's Market and other sources is the way to go. Also, I must admit that I don't own the LMP, but rather go to my local library to use this reference book.

      5 out of 5 stars A great manga.......2006-03-30

I first found out about this manga from one of the manga fliers at the bookstore... you know, the kind with the editor's picks and promos... but in it was an excerpt from this book, and it interested me. I went out and bought it not long after, and fell in love with it. It has a lighthearted "fun-ness" about it that I just love.... and yet, there's the part where Yoshimori tries so hard only to protect Tokine... they really are two great characters, and I can never wait for the next one to come out!

3 out of 5 stars Demon hunting for youngsters.......2006-03-07

So, let's say your a demon hunter in training in Japan(God knows there's alot of them there!)but your sick of your grandpa's constant bitching about family tradition, and all you wanna do is be a baker. That's the premise for Kekkaishi by manga-ka Yellow Tanabe.

Yoshimori is the latest in his family's group of spiritualists. They have the power to set up barriers around demons, and either exorcise them to the afterlife, or just contain them in an attempt to ward them off. At the same time, there is a rival clan of from the same order whose latest disciple Tokine is Yoshimori's neighbor and schoolmate, although she goes to the high school part of the campus while he's still in middle school(they sometimes mix in grade schools in Japan). Most of the ghosts and other undead nasties habitat around their school because it was the site of a temple that was overrun with demons centuries ago. Now, both Yoshimori and Tokine's plans recieve payment from a mysterious benefactor for keeping the area clear of spooks.

Yoshimori gets help from a dog demon named Madarao who is indebted to his family's service for the past few centuries. Tokine gets help from a similar canine called Hakubi. Between the two of them, they have to deal with possessed teachers, pesky chef ghosts, and other things that might make campus life more like an episode of Buffy.

Kekkaishi is a pretty fair manga. It's not as gripping as say Bleach which is also about teenage ghost chasers. But it does have a pretty original story and interesting artwork. It seems to develop more and more with each chapter, so its worth looking into further volumes of.

5 out of 5 stars by day junior high student by night yoshimori is a kekkaishi!!.......2005-12-30

kekkaishi is about yoshimori a kekkaishi (a kekkaishi is a demon hunter).well any way the manga was great and cant wait for no. four to come out!!the manga kekkaishi is also rated teen and in my perspective it shouldn't.kekkaishi has some vilonce but nothing offensive and there is demons but its not like there all freaky(like the one in the manga deatnote ugg)but its suitible for ages 10 through your age.i loved the manga and cant wight to see what yellow tanabe dishes out next!!i found this manga in borders i desided to try something else than what my friends told my to like naruto and shaman king thats how i found this manga.who knows maybe you could try something new like ohhh ummm let me see umm KEKKAISHI!!!!

      ^_^

5 out of 5 stars kek- uh, kek- o? kek..........2005-08-01

why am i always first to review these books? oh well, this book is pretty cool, regardless of how freakin' hard it is to pronounce the name. it's about YOSHImori, a fourteen year old who has the ability to create barriers out of thin air. He becomes friends with this pastry chef guy, who died thinking about a really lame vegetable. (poor guy) And, of course what manga wouldn't be without a love interest? (hey, read the book. it could happen*eventualy*) Tokine is yoshi's 16 year old neighbor. She, like yoshimori, is a kekkaishi (barrier master)
and both of their families are feuding over who's really the true practitioner(don't know what that means, either)of the art.
this book gets a five outta five, because, for now, i can't tell whether it's gonna freakin rock (the highest compliment i know) or whether it'd just be ok. read it for yourself. if i didn't think it was worth reading, i wouldn't have reviewed it, so it's definetly a good way to spend an hour, if nothing else.

                  Book Description

While writing these children's books I mixed fact with fiction, reality with fantasy, and the will to overcome near-impossible problems with creative solutions. Since children need positive encouragement, optimism, hope, and, most of all - love, I've created stories using animals - who are true to their particular nature. I chose animals which children can both relate to and understand by their own unique behaviors, but sometimes with a little humor and a few unexpected happenings. Positive reading for positive readers!

                    Book Description

A brilliant father-son biography of the scandalous life of movie star Errol Flynn -- and of his son's equally glamorous yet doomed career as a war photographer in Vietnam

On April 6, 1970, the charismatic Sean Flynn rode his motorcycle into a roadblock, was captured by the Vietcong, and vanished into the jungle. Errol's son shared his father's good looks, charm, athleticism, courage, and artistic talent. But Sean also inherited his father's love of risk, compelling him to lead an equally romantic but tragically brief life.

The story of both men's chillingly similar lives begins with Errol. He was born in Australia, where his mother either beat him or ignored him. He spent his early adult life in the savage outposts of New Guinea as a tobacco planter, gold prospector, bird trapper, diamond smuggler, and slave trader. By the time fame arrived, drinking, drugs, and sex with underage girls assured him legendary status for recklessness, as well as an early death.

Sean was obsessed with his father, a remote and mythical figure. Never able to break free from Errol's overpowering legacy, Sean established his own heroic reputation. The father played a daredevil on screen, the son -- as brilliant and daring as his father -- was driven to increase the stakes. His final gallant and suicidal gesture carried the Flynn tradition to its inevitable conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book!.......2005-06-07

To the best of my knowledge this is a well researched account of the life of Flynn. A person who seems to be one of those types who is either loved or despised intensely, Flynn is a tough subject for an unbiased account. Mr. Meyer's book, according to some Flynn experts is flawed in some details however the basic facts and incidents offered are well supported and provide a truly tragic and sad saga of a man whose influence on myself has been inescapable! I learned of Flynn as a young toddler watching his films from my daddies knee. I always enjoyed Bogart, Cagney, Cooper and Wayne however there was always something so much more compelling in Flynn's classic films. It was very painful for me to read of his life. This is something I'd purposely held back from doing in light of all the unsubstantiated negative stories surrounding Flynn's life. It was particularly hard to read of his son's tragic life. Perhaps it's not possible to have an entirely accurate representation of Flynn or that of his son given their nature and circumtances. Being a new father myself I plan on spending as much quality time as I possibly can with my son!

2 out of 5 stars Two Stars for Sean.......2003-06-02

I have to agree with Mr. Hurst's eloquent review, and I'll put it more succinctly: this is a lousy book. Why write a biography of Errol Flynn, of all people, if you're going to do it with no humor and with lordly disdain? It's like a biography of Tom Sawyer written by his half-brother, the tattle-tale goody-goody Sid. Like many, I guess, I picked it up in order to read about Sean Flynn, since there is so little out there about him. But as noted, Sean is reduced to three chapters presented as endpapers. One might conclude there wasn't enough to his short life to make a full book... if there weren't so much other evidence of the biographer's tendency to stop researching once he has enough evidence to support his (rather ugly) pre-determined thesis.

4 out of 5 stars A JOYLESS TREATMENT OF A JOYFUL, ROLLICKING LIFE.......2003-04-07

Jeffrey Meyers, best known for his works on such literary figures as D. H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a gifted, at times brilliant biographer. Here he brings to his treatment of Errol and Sean Flynn his knowledge of the world's great literature. Meyers can take almost any figure and make him acceptable from a literary point of view. Who else could find a parallel between Errol Flynn and Edgar Allan Poe? One can imagine a future Meyers biography of Bugsy Siegel, with frequent allusions to Julius Caesar, Faust, and MacBeth.

Meyers's gift for finding parallels between disparate people's lives is especially impressive. I found those between the lives of John Barrymore and Flynn to be especially compelling and insightful - more so than those between Errol and Sean. With reference to Sean, few will feel competent to judge the validity of Meyers' sections which reincarnate his last days. Some of it I found persuasive, but other parts - especially some of the links in the chain of logic - seemed weak; the recreation of "the facts" may be a bit too confident when dealing with mainly hearsay evidence.

In the main section of this book Errol Flynn comes across as a tragic, forlorn, dejected, melancholic sociopath. The habitual choice to put Flynn in a darker rather than positive light surfaces in numerous ways, as in Meyers' handling of Basil Rathbone. All biography involves some shading of details, which usually goes under the heading of "literary license." But the deliberate reshaping of a quotation by rearrangement and omission, for the purpose of producing the desired result, is disingenuous - a distinct "no-no" for a front-rank biographer. At the top of p. 146, a long comment of Basil Rathbone is subtly rearranged so as to produce the desired result ý to contribute to Meyers' overall scheme of the father-son shared death-wish. It creates a false impression of what Rathbone actually wrote about Flynn, and leaves one wondering how many other things have been cleverly reshaped in order to fit the thesis.

The question therefore lingers: Does Meyers actually get under Errolýs skin (or that of Sean for that matter)? The answer, I fear, must be no - despite what Meyers and his publicists say. Meyers, in my opinion, is far too detached in his literary mien to explore effectively a man like Flynn. His Flynn is a two-dimensional, black-and-white figure who set out to destroy himself. The real-life Flynn was an infuriatingly complex, three-dimensional, Technicolor personality. Meyers is a very careful writer, but he also tends to be a cold, dispassionate, joyless writer, with an occasional tendency toward shading and over simplification. One gets little sense of the joi-de-vivre of the Errol Flynn of this book. Flynn was at heart a very, very funny man.

On the other hand there is something un-humorous, at points even tiresome, about INHERITED RISK. The whole thing is written from the point of view of Greek tragedy. It is doubtful that after reading it the reader will have chuckled even once. This is a major failing in a biography of Errol Flynn. The ever-so-literate Meyers, in all his zeal to analyze him - to dissect him into his component parts and to isolate his various destructive influences - has somehow let the real Flynn elude him.

There are other anomalies in INHERITED RISK. In one of his appendices (p. 326), Meyers breaks down Flynn's films into three categories: "best," "seeable," and "poor." With all due respect to Meyers, the list is bizarre, and may call into question his cinematic judgment. Is "The Roots of Heaven" (1958) really a better film than "They Died with Their Boots On" (1941) or "Adventures of Don Juan" (1949)? What cinematic myopia would place "The Sisters" (1938), "Edge of Darkness" (1943), and "Northern Pursuit" (1943) - not to mention "Silver River" (1948) - into the "poor" category?

Despite the dual photos on the front of the dust-jacket, the book is not really an analysis of the relationship of the two men, Errol and Sean, along the lines of Sir Edmund Goss' FATHER AND SON. The disparity in the treatments is made clear by the arrangement - Sean constitutes the endpapers (totaling a mere 49 pages), while the main section deals with Errol (244 pages). There is thus a serious question of balance.

Also, Meyers' central idea of Greek tragedy - that of the fatal character flaw of the father being reproduced in the son, leading to the latter's inevitable doom, does not really come off - no matter how energetically Meyers tries. One gets from this book the clear impression that the lives of the two Flynns were a complete waste. That may well have been true of the son, but it can't be said of the father. Errol Flynn brought untold joy to millions worldwide ý and still does to this day.

INHERITED RISK is a missed opportunity. With all the research that went into the book, it could have been the best Flynn biography ever written. But throughout most of it Meyersý staid approach just doesn't hold the readerýs attention. There is also a procrustean feel ý the impression that the lives of these two men are being stretched and cut to fit the "Greek tragedy" model that Meyers is pushing. Such shortcomings, sadly, mar what otherwise might have been a monumental biographical achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Two subjects with the same pathos.......2003-03-29

There is a tendency to describe people whose lives veer into chaos far more frequently than our own as troubled. The balance is provided in this book by rendering an account of how superior the lives of ERROL AND SEAN FLYNN IN HOLLYWOOD AND VIETNAM seem compared to the rest of us. I'm partial to this account because I was already a fan of the Flynn associates in Nam: Tim Page, Michael Herr, John Steinbeck IV, Robert Sam Anson, and Dana Stone. Dana Stone gets credit for taking the photo in Ha Than in 1968 in which Sean Flynn, "In full battle dress and holding a grenade, with arms outstretched and right boot in midair, he charges over the top of the hill and attacks the North Vietnamese enemy. . . . After the officer was wounded, Sean saved the day by assuming one of Errol's movie roles, leading the charge himself and killing an enemy soldier." (pp. 55-56). There are few pictures of Sean in this book, but real fans will have the collection in REQUIEM: BY THE PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO DIED IN VIETNAM AND INDOCHINA, edited by Horst Faas and Tim Page.

The picture of Sean Flynn and Dana Stone on motorcycles in Vietnam, c. 1970, facing page 97, might be rough for those whose expectations were shaped by Jack Warner's "considerable shrewdness and a clear grasp of public taste." (caption to picture 11). Errol Flynn was interesting enough to dominate the first 29 pictures in this book. Then number 30 shows Sean Flynn with a friend, Steve Cutter, in 1958, and the final page of pictures shows the contrast between the highly professional look of an American studio portrait, c. 1962, and how Sean and Dana would look when last seen by Western eyes.

If armies are usually considered highly disciplined, as well as the most modern, civilized mechanism for establishing order in the midst of chaos, Sean and Dana miscalculated how outrageously the enemy in Cambodia would be striving for something else, that they hadn't counted upon. A journalist card issued by the U.S. Department of Defense was supposed to be sufficient to convince the inhabitants of this planet that they possessed the opportunity to have their story told to the world, and the cameras should have convinced the enemy that the main thing the Americans wanted to take was pictures. Part of Sean's trouble was that he was expecting to see more than the usual amount of trouble. The previous year, Sean spent a few days in jail in Djakarta because of a 17-year-old high school girl, daughter of a Caltex corporation lawyer and a princess from Sumatra, "named after a Hindu goddess." (p. 49). For me (still an effetely snobbish reader and broadcaster of my own opinions), being in the army was like spending two years with the Djakarta taxi driver who drove Sean and the girl to her home in his Mercedes taxi. The taxi driver assumed that the girl was the hot attraction that Sean thought she was and returned with a Chinese businessman. The story is related partly in words that Sean wrote to his mother November 2 and December 4, 1969, which admitted that Sean "stepped out of the bushes swinging a baseball bat. He smashed the car's and windshield, then attacked the driver. The Chinese customer meanwhile had fled." (p. 49).

Tying it all together like this book does is a hoot: "American officers expected extraordinary courage from Errol's son and Sean always met their expectations. Accompanying the 4th Division's long-range recon patrollers for a month, Sean walked point on dangerous four-man patrols in the northern Highlands. He stayed in a besieged bunker at Kon Tien where, in only three days, 375 Marines were wounded." (p. 51). As famous as Sean Flynn became, it might still be possible to find 375 Marines who remember being wounded in the same bunker at Kon Tien, but it seems more likely they were wounded at Con Thien when Sean was in some other country. Sean probably had more combat experience than most of the guys on walking recon patrols for the 4th Division, who previously were more likely to have some incident of looking for a lost pet in their childhood than of finding anything in the Highlands. Most of the 4th Division called it the Central Highlands. Up north, where the Marine operated, Con Thien was at one end of the McNamara Line on the map on page 127 of HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE VIETNAM WAR by Harry G. Summers, Jr. According to an official count in that book, 3,077 mortar, artillery, and rocket rounds struck the base there during the week of September 19-27, 1967, only three months after Sean Flynn photographed the results of the six-day Arab-Israeli War, when, "On his way back from Sinai, Sean dragged a recoilless rifle behind his rented Volkswagen and gave it to Mandy Rice-Davies (who had been implicated in the John Profumo spy-and-sex scandal in Britain and had emigrated to Israel) to decorate her discotheque in Tel Aviv." (Meyers, p. 45).

Most of ERROL AND SEAN FLYNN IN HOLLYWOOD AND VIETNAM is devoted to the life of Errol Flynn, pages 59-303. His death of a heart attack was rather pathetic, as the doctors in those days seemed better able to find heart problems in an autopsy setting than "when Flynn suddenly felt sharp pains in his back and legs." (p. 295). A doctor told him to ease the pain by lying on the floor. "After an autopsy, the coroner found that his death was caused by myocardial infarction (blood not reaching the heart), coronary thrombosis (clot in the coronary blood vessels) and coronary atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)." (p. 295). Errol's mother, Marelle, wrote to Sean two months later that "my poor boy knew that he had not long to live. He had several heart attacks, & had been warned seriously only a short time ago." (p. 295).

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well written Biography!.......2002-10-04

As a long time fan of Errol Flynn, I had to buy this latest biography. This is probably one of the best written biographies on Flynn I have ever read. It is right up there with MY WICKED WICKED WAYS by Flynn himself. This book is painstakingly researched with obvious assistance from the Flynn family for accuracy. No outrageous claims are made as in the past books about the actor. It is downright eerie how parallel Sean and Errol Flynn's lives really were. Definitely a must read for Flynn fans and highly recommended to those who love all things Classic Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars Clear, clever directions for a great hunt!.......2007-07-24

The author offers plenty of clever ways to conduct a scavenger/treasure hunt. My only caveat is that the hunts all seemed based on driving or walking through a town, with no suggestions for scaling it back to a yard or house, because he feels that numbers (house numbers, price of an item, speed limit sign) should serve as the items that are sought. Lots of warnings about not letting drunk guests drive, etc. Still one of the best books I've found on the subject.

I was completely disappointed in the book. I was so excited to get it in the mail. After I got it in the mail and read it I felt like I wasted my money!!! I really thought the book would focus mainly on the different types of treasure and scavanger hunts and give several examples and already planned hunts but there is very little. There was pointless information given throughout the entire book.

I took a webinar based on this book and found the information presented intriguing enough to buy the book. It's a short read but filled with good, practical information. If there are certain people in your lives who rub you the wrong way, understanding how their style differs from yours could help to improve communication and make the relationship more effective and pleasant for both. This book was definitely worth reading and I've experienced benefits from it at work in a very short time.

4 out of 5 stars Must read for every one..........2005-07-09

Of the several books I have studied on similar topics, this was one of the easiest to read through and apply. Although the title says People Styles at Work, it is equally applicable in personal life as well. The focus on studying behavior and inferring "style" from the same is much easier accomplished than trying to figure out the "temprament style" based on Myers Briggs.

The two dimensions of Assertiveness and Responsiveness, and the concept of above / below the middle for each of these dimensions gives 4 quadrants; one for each of the styles. This makes it convenient to understand the 4 styles, and also the shades within the styles.

I have benefited tremendously - if you are new to this topic it will serve you well to take notes as you read; create a cheat sheet of the characteristics for each style. Then for some time carry the cheat sheet with you, and refer to it often as you observe people's behaviors. Over a period of time, you will pickup the nuances of how to recognize the styles, and succeed in your interactions with others - despite them, and despite yourself... Enjoy!

the book is simple and the ideas are easy to applicate in the every day life , i've tried the method and have good results - Read it if you have problem to communicate with some of your colleagues and you need to work with them

5 out of 5 stars Could save your sanity, and maybe your job!.......2003-11-13

Highly recommended. Several years ago, I had a clash of personal styles between my boss and me. I thought she talked like a kindergarten teacher, and she felt that I came on like a steamroller. She was familiar with the methods discussed in this book, although she learned them during a seminar at a former employer. This book helped turn a bad working relationship into an excellent working relationship, and may have saved my job. I learned to "flex" to my boss's style (and to her credit, she flexed somewhat to mine). I reread the book from time to time and try to practice what I've learned. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is running into "people problems" on the job or elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A method that really makes a difference in the workplace!.......2003-01-15

One the best book and method on the subject I have read so far, and I have read quite a few. There are 4 main Communication Styles, and the best thing is that only observable behaviors are used to categorize people in one style or another. No messing around with people's phsyche, and finally a very simple method to effectively relate to other people in the workplace.

I am using Communication Styles with all my direct reports, during meetings, etc. It allows me to convey clearly my messages, and at the same time overcome communication styles differences. This simple method does makes a difference in my daily work not only as a manager but also in communicating with my peers.

This book is a must have in your management library at home.
