Book Description
If seeing ever really was a reason for believing, it surely was not in New York around 1900. The rift between appearances and truth was widening: deceptive images flourished in advertising and mass media; science contradicted unaided vision; the spirit world gained credibility; and hucksters, frauds, and hoaxes proliferated. In Looking Askance, Michael Leja conducts a dazzling tour from fine art to mass culture and back again to chart the emergence of a new skepticism about seeing and to assess the roles played by the visual arts, both fine and commercial, in this cultural transformation.
A lively exploration of the relationship between modern art, truth, and deception, Looking Askance offers a new paradigm for understanding American visual culture, from the art of Thomas Eakins, William Harnett, and Marcel Duchamp to such fascinating historical episodes as the trial of spirit photographer William Mumler, scientist Helen Abbott's interpretation of Monet's Impressionism, the myriad illusions featured at the Buffalo World's Fair of 1901, and William James's analysis of automatic drawing. Leja traces the roots of skeptical seeing in the culture of modernity and in national values of entrepreneurship, invention, competition, and unregulated marketing.
This brilliantly pluralistic study will resonate with a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary interests. Tracking the way questions about the nature of seeing inform self-constructions of the modern subject, Leja moves flexibly through a wide range of surprisingly diverse materials, linking spirit photography, world fairs, circuses, automatic drawing, realist painting, and Marcel Duchamp. In true skeptical fashion, Leja trains his eye on the ambiguities of his materials, refusing to let them settle into either a celebratory or a cynical narrative. Opposites are revealed as similar (P. T. Barnum's humbug and George Washington's truth-telling both play on the motif of deception), while humbugs manifest difference (a radical fear of dishonesty versus a source of delight). The final illuminating shift in this complex study is thus from the modern need to negotiate multiple and layered realities to the manifold optical lenses of Leja's own kaleidoscopic approach.

price finder.......2007-09-27
I'm always looking for the best price. So while looking at the magazine ABC Distributing, I found this book and The Marvel Encyclopeda for only $16.95. So why would Amazon sell these book for a higher price? Even with tax and shipping the cost was under $40.00 for both. Always shop around before buying from Amazon.

A Fascinating and Irreverent Romp Through History.......2007-08-24
In this remarkable book, fifty royal individuals are briefly profiled, spanning a period from the third century BC to the present day. In these profiles, the author has gone to great pains to focus on these individuals' various types and degrees of weirdness: from having odd but notable quirks to being stark raving mad. But what makes this book so enjoyable is the author's irreverent tongue-in-cheek writing style. On several occasions I found myself laughing out loud at his careful, well-thought-out choice of words and witty descriptions. This book should be of interest to everyone, but especially history buff who are looking for light historical narrative with a most pleasant twist.
Title says it all.......2006-04-27
This book is a very interesting and entertaining look at some of Royalty's weirdest characters
The people in the book range from Chinese Emperors in the 200 BCE's to the mad Roman Emperors about the time of Christ to people like Prince Phillip and Michael Abney-Hastings who people think is the rightful king of England

CSA guide.......2007-05-13
Not as good as I'd hoped for. Written by a guy who may know how to shoot at Cowboy events, but does not transfer this knowledge to the reader.
A disappointing read, to say the least. Did not present any information I hadn't already come across in other publications.
It brings to mind another person just looking to cash in on publishing a book about a little written of subject.
All about cowboy action........2006-06-03
This book tells you what cowboy action is, the differences in shooting classes, the equipment used, and more speed tips than I can count.
None like it! None better!.......2003-08-03
Clear and concise, the author of this book has taken personal experience and knowledge to produce a manual of engagement not likely to be seen again. The depth of explanation truly gives the reader almost every side of the equation. Techniques, firearms,problems...litteraly the entire gamut of competition is laid out. This may well be the CAS "Bible" of field engagement. There are NO problems worthy of mention. Anderson may not be a mathematics professor, but his depiction of shooting planes and how to work safely within them during a run is 100% correct. Anderson provides fair and accurate information, giving both sides of any subject arguable. This book will serve those whom are just starting...to those who compete at the top national levels. You won't be disappointed!
Basically a good book, but it has problems.......2001-12-28
Hunter Scott Anderson's book -- The Top Shooter's Guide to Cowboy Action Shooting -- does live up to the promise on the front cover -- proven tips to sharpen your skills. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is not a book that is directed at the novice. However, there are a few glitches in the book that bothered me enough to make me take some notice of them and pass them on to the reader. One of these concerns his misuse of the term "radius," when he is describing the "180 degree safety plane." He repeatedly uses the expressions "90 degree radius" and "170 degree radius." These are not the correct terms. A radius is a line of fixed length. The correct term would be axis or plane, but not radius. The other is in the drawings which accompany his depictions of the various safety planes. The 180 degree safety plane (which is the plane of absolutely no forgiveness, under SASS regulations) is drawn correctly. However, the 170 degree plane in his drawings is way off. In the SASS on-line handbook, the 170 degree plane is defined as follows: "The 170 degree safety rule means the muzzle of the firearm must always be straight down range +/- 85 degree." It has been this way for at least three years. His "170 degree safety plane" is much closer to 150 degrees and his 150 degree angle is closer to 120 degrees.
For as long as I have been a member of SASS, the 170 degree angle has been the one that must not be violated under any circumstances. The 180 degree plane has been the "point of no forgiveness."
He also mentions some rather iffy trigger pull adjustments. He states that trigger pulls of 24 ounces and less are common. This is awfully light. Some gunsmiths consider anything less than 2 pounds to be a hair trigger. I would rather have a good safe 2 pounds. That isn't going to slow anyone down. And it is far safer.
Finally, I found a few of the photographs illustrating safety violations to be a bit cryptic. Although they were explained in the text, the explanations were often on different pages from the photos. This was a case of bad layout. In photos illustrating safety errors, exaggeration is a good tool to use to drive a point home. This would have helped here.
In spite of these problems, the rest of the material in the book is good. And I think all CAS shooters should have it in their libraries.
He Cleaned the Stage!!!.......2001-02-21
Most books about Cowboy Action Shooting are geared to the novice, and assume the reader knows little or nothing about the sport. These types of books are great because they help the sport grow by attracting new participants. However, these books are of little value to the experienced shooter. Bounty Hunter has instead written a book that shows even experienced shooters how to shoot smarter, faster, and perform better on the clock. The photography is exceptional, the examples very clear. You will find tips in here that you have seen no where else. This book would also be extremely useful for beginners as long as they only try to digest a little of it at a time. Bounty Hunter has an easygoing style which makes reading this work a pleasure. I highly recommend this book and give it a raised fist!!! (Clean Run)
Book Description
Classic Strategies for Unapologetic Winners
“It” is a strategy so powerful and an execution-driven mind-set so relentless that companies use it to gain more than just competitive advantage ¿ they achieve an industry dominance that is virtually unassailable and that competitors often try to explain away as unfair. In their “hardball manifesto,” authors George Stalk and Rob Lachenauer of the leading strategy consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group show how hardball competitors can build or maintain an enviable competitive edge by pursuing one or more of the classic “hardball strategies”: unleash massive and overwhelming force, exploit anomalies, devastate profit sanctuaries, raise competitors’ costs, and break compromises.
Based on twenty-five years of experience advising and observing a range of companies, the authors argue that hardball competitors can gain extreme competitive advantage ¿ neutralizing, marginalizing, or even destroying competitors ¿ without violating their contracts with customers or employees, and without breaking the rules. A clear-eyed paean to the timeless strategies that have driven the world’s winning companies, Hardball Strategy redefines and reinterprets the meaning of competition for a new generation of business players.

Great Strategy for Business.......2007-08-04
John Steinbeck, the great writer, once said that "The things we admire in men, generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of FAILURE in our system. And those that we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of SUCCESS. And while men admire the quality of the first, they love the produce of the second". Well, this book is exactly that. It speaks to the exact words that the great John Steinbeck mentioned so many years ago. If you want to succeed in business, a certain amount of Hardball must be in your quiver of arrows.
Machiavellian Hardball.......2007-06-19
"Hardball" is about doing what's in your best interest according to the conditions of the situation. "Hardball" is a metaphor for playing in the big leagues with a "winner take all" philosophy. What's excellent about the book is while taking a Machiavellian approach to doing what is necessary for the situation, it does not advocate bloodletting for the sake of shedding blood. If anything, it warns against it. A wounded animal could be at its most dangerous. But, like Machiavelli's, The Prince, one could assert that if your opponent declares war on you, all means for winning should be at your disposal. An excellent book to read in conjunction with "Monopoly Rules: How to Find, Capture and Control the Most Lucrative Markets In Any Business, by Milind M. Lele."

Hardball: Are You Playing to Play or Playing to Win.......2006-11-04
The authors clearly believe in what they've written and have seen many times the characteristics they describe, as shown by the very good use of examples and anecdotes. The authors have an inspirational tone, sometimes a little too much so. The book has a little too much of that inspirational feel and not quite enough depth on some topics. Ultimately, the treatment is a little thin although the book is a good read.
Inside exposition of winning strategies.......2006-08-08
Being a winner in business means acting like a winner. That requires having an aggressive mindset, not settling for second best and recognizing opportunity. Not every company or executive has the stomach to play hardball. Kicking an opponent when he's down, reneging on a compromise or having to make decisions that your managers will hate is never easy. But the business landscape is littered with the skeletons of companies that settled for "good, not great," only to be blindsided by competitors who played for keeps. Authors George Stalk and Rob Lachenauer clearly believe that "nice guy" and "business leader" live in different worlds and although some of their "hardball" tactics aren't all that tough or fresh, some clearly are. They say you have two basic choices: be the predator or the prey. We recommend this book to those who want to be the boss beast in that jungle out there.
Thought provoking 80s business mindset.......2006-07-26
I picked this book up as part of a package for attending a speech by Mr. Stalk who is VP at the influential Boston Consulting Group. More so than his book, his speech was jaw dropping, hard-line, 80's corporate raider stuff... all based on a core principle that makes sense, businesses have a primary objective of meeting the needs of their customers and shareholders. Beyond this simple concept, everything else is good will to the community.
This ongoing principle was easy for me to accept and I have to say I reflected on some of my opinions of different businesses (WalMart, Starbucks). That being said, the majority of this book is written to CEOs and their advisors with influence over an organization's objectives. This was where I was confused on being invited to this speaking engagement, this is subject matter that is higher up the chain than I can influence right now. However, I did take away some understanding of why corporate leadership makes the decisions they do and am tossing around how these concepts can be scaled down to the departmental level.
