Book Description

This is a collection of essays by distinguished scholars that will introduce the student or museum-goer to the study of Greek vases. Although the book is roughly chronological in arrangement--beginning with the appearance of human figures on Geometric vases, and ending with their virtual disappearance from Hellenistic pottery--it is not a history of Greek vase painting, or a handbook. It offers instead a series of suggestions on how to read the often complex images presented by Greek vases, and also explains how the vases were made and distributed. The volume is fully illustrated throughout.

encountered in museum exhibitions and publications on ancient Greek ceramics. Included is an essay on how to look at Greek vases and another on the conservation of ancient ceramics. These essays provide succinct explanations of the terms most frequently encountered by museum-goers. The concise
definitions are divided into two sections, one on potters and painters and another on vase shapes and technical terms relating to the construction and decoration of the vases. an indispensable guide for anyone wishing to obtain a greater understanding and enjoyment of Greek ceramics.

5 out of 5 stars compact and informative.......2004-12-16

The book begins with a quick general overview on Greek ceramics - its history, techniques, trajectory in themes, artists, mythological characters, Greek culture/society that finds itself within the art, etc - that provides the reader with a pretty good base for the number of pages it takes up. There is then a short section on the 'conservation and care of ancient Greek ceramic objects' that explains some more technical things.

After that comes the large section on Greek potters and vase painters, listed in alphabetical order and accompanied by colorful and informative images of the relevant vases. The artist's period, name, style and whatnot are explained in detail. Definitions for unfamiliar terms used in this section can be found in the next part of the book, which explains vase shapes and technical terms in normal English (also with nice images). Thus through the cross-referencing, most of the book's content can be understood without much trouble. At the end is a chart of vase shapes, which is useful because you can compare them without having to flip a single page.

This book is excellent for purposes of quick reference. I would say that most people would not read it like they would a novel, but if you have any interest in Greek vase paintings, this is an excellent book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Greek Vases.......2004-08-02

Understanding Greek Vases, published by the Getty Museum, is a compact reference guide that provides the essential background (painters, styles, terminology) needed to study and appreciate ancient Greek vases.

The major part of the book consists of short (half-page), encyclopedia-style, entries for Athenian potters, vase-painters, ceramic styles, and other essential terminology. Coverage, although limited to Athenian pottery, is broad and expert, ranging from "bilingual vases" to "Six's technique." Entries are generously illustrated, mostly in color, by important examples (including many "name vases") from museum collections in the U.S. and abroad.

What really sets this book apart is that the individual entries are so extensively cross-referenced, that they look and feel more like a hypertext-linked web site than a conventional book. For example, if you look up the entry for the "Brygos Painter," you'll get cross-references in the text to three other Cup-painters, to Cup-painting itself, to the Pioneers, to Workshops, to Attribution, to Kylix, and to seven illustrations.

This is an amazingly effective reference, one that I will use often at home, and take with me whenever I go to look at Greek vases in a museum. Tip: don't plan to read it cover-to-cover like an ordinary book. Begin with some topic that interests you, and follow the cross-references as you would with a Web page.

This product was excellent. The story line and the ultimate ending which kills Captain America right in front of our eyes. Who knew. Highly recommended.

      2 out of 5 stars so-so captain america story..........2007-01-11

average predictable story, the art is nice. this installment is better than part 2, which is a total mess. overall if you are a captain america fan you'll probably hate this for many reasons, if you are a casual comics fan you might think its ok, if you read a lot of comics and are tired of the same overused garbage from the big two publishers you'll hate this.

5 out of 5 stars Brubaker Restores My Faith in the Comic Medium.......2007-01-10

I had bailed out on the comic scene for good following High School, although I continued to pick up Jeff Smith's "Bone", since I knew it was a finite series, so I wouldn't have to be chained to it forever. Well, the day came and the series ended, and quite frankly, I missed my bi-monthly excursions to the comic shop. I missed the smell of paper. I even dreamed about it.

So I was on my Honeymoon in the frozen north when I stopped into a Supermarket and happened to glance at issue #1 of Captain America written by Ed Brubaker. I've never been a fan of Cap or his Avenger buddies. Just a bunch of Government tools. But this issue rocked. The art was really great and when I sat down and read it I found a story I could really dig to. So I was hooked, and I count each new issue as another month of marriage. Since then, I've also opened the door to Ed Brubaker's Daredevil too. Daredevil was my favorite growing up, so I'm glad to have him back in my life.

Writing and art are equally sublime. The perfect creative team. The story is fresh and up to date. Flashbacks to WWII were an added thrill. Real gritty storytelling. This Ed Brubaker knows what he's doing.

I'm with this book for the long haul, and I am grateful to know that each month I have this marvelous little treat to look forward to. EXCELSIOR!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reboot for Captain America.......2006-12-09

This is a great Captian America story. As a reboot on his origin, it doesn't try to start at the very beginning. It takes almost all the current elements and lines them up for a total change of perspective. We know who the Red Skull is, we know who Bucky is, we know who Nomad is, we know who Nick Fury and SHEILD is...all of them come together in the story and are essential in changing Cap's life in many ways.

Brubaker does a great service to fans and newcomers alike, giving us a complex story that delivers all that we know with an intelligent refocus. Cap is a different person, making his political views very clear in many cases, most of which were formed during the war by all the fighting as well as the inspirational stories he experienced.

The artwork is outstanding. Cap looks real, not so much the stoic figure that stood an easy 6'5" as a vision of Patriotism. He's suffering a bit, but underneath you know he still believes in the basic principles of the Red, White and Blue, and not the political quagmire that has clouded the views of it's people.

In the story, he is called to help look into the death of a character that has been a part of his life since the war, the Red Skull. As pieces of the puzzle are found he discovers that someone is manipulating his thoughts and memories, that there is greater mystery than the death of an old enemy. He finds inconsistencies in his thoughts and recollections, so much so it affects his fighting ability and concentration.

As the terrorist aspect grows more dangerous and the plot expands, Cap comes closer to the truth, and closer to one of the most shocking revelations of his life.

      5 out of 5 stars stupid laughter!.......2006-10-02

Americas dumbest criminals is full of stupid laughter! It has a bunch of little stories put together in one book! One of my favorite ones is about a guy that goes into a bank and tries to rob it but the bank calls the police and the guy starts running away from the police but they still caught him because he was robbing the bank at night and he was wearing light up shoes so the police could see him running!

      3 out of 5 stars Lame.......2006-03-31

Perhaps the problem is in the presentation. Stories like these are better told by a witty reporter than printed in a book. While many of the stories were entertaining, I felt like many of them fell flat. Some of the stories were mere coincidences that lacked humor. Others just did not seem to fit under the title of the book. An undercover cop suckering a drug dealer is only amusing so many times.

I did gain some enjoyment from this book. Because many of the stories are based in the Chicago area, the proximity made that stories more relevant to me. Aside from these stories, I could have lived without this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!!.......2005-09-29

I never cease to be amazed by how stupid some people can be. These stories literally had me laughing so hard that I dropped the book on the floor. I've read several different collections about dumb criminals but this one is by far the best. This book had me cracking up. If you have not yet read this book, pick up a copy because it is well worth it!

1 out of 5 stars Obsolete and objectionable .......2005-04-17

This book delivers what it promises, but I'm not sure that it promises anything special.

It is essentially a collection of humorous cop stories, told to the authors by policemen who, by dint of their occupation, always seem to have an amusing anecdote or two.

Most of the 100 stories are amusing, a few are very funny, and a fair number just fall flat. While browsing through this book is good for a chuckle, I think you could probably get the same exact chuckle by browsing through the internet for similar subject matter.

Even though this is a light-hearted book that is more concerned with entertaining the reader than making a statement, I still couldn't help but be bothered by the politics of the authors, and even more so by the brashness with which they assert those politics.

The introduction relates an anecdote about the authors trying to get the members of a police station to work with them. They explain to the police chief that they think that criminals are glorified in shows like COPS. I had to reread this to make sure I had understood it correctly. COPS glamorizes criminals? In my experience, COPS usually makes criminals look subhuman. Anyhow, the police chief agrees to work with the authors on the condition that they make the criminals look like "coldhearted dumbasses," and show the police force as being "professional at all times." I was shocked to hear that the authors were basically agreeing to cover up any professional misconduct they encountered, and to make the criminals look as bad as possible. And they were bragging about this bargain in the introduction!

Looked at in this light, some of the stories seem a little sinister. The last one in the book tells about an escaped convict who was attempting to hide from a search party. The convict mistakenly thinks he is backing into a hog-shed, when in reality he is backing through a single wall, and the surrounding policemen come up on his rear end poking into the air, with the convict apparently thinking he is hidden from view. There's a quote from a cop that says they "didn't know whether to turn the dogs loose on him, read him his rights, or just give him a good swift kick." Supposedly, they read him his rights, but given the deal that the authors made in the beginning, why should the reader assume that the man wasn't subjected to either of the other two (highly illegal) options?

This is just one of many examples of the "punchline" being that an apprehended suspect gets physically hurt in some way. In one case, after a man (nonviolent offender) is taken into custody and handcuffed, a couple of dogs attack him, biting him several times before the arresting officer could drive the dogs off. The authors write that this is a stellar example of taking a bite out of crime. Har he har har!

Joking about physically abusing a prisoner just isn't that funny to me, and it would be even less funny to the people who are facing long jail terms as a result of their crimes. Just because a person has been convicted of a crime and is paying the price doesn't mean that they deserve our ridicule, especially not mean-spirited ridicule that is specifically designed to make them look like coldhearted dumbasses.

Those political objections aside, this book is somewhat amusing to flip through, but as I said, you could find the same type of material on the web for free.

      3 out of 5 stars America's Dumbest Criminals.......2003-11-21

This was a pretty good book, very amusing. It was about dumb criminals doing, of course, dumb things. It is too bad that all crimes aren't as funny or easy to solve. One of the stories in this book was titled BAD BRIBES. this story started when a man drove through a red traffic light right in front of a cop, if this wasn't enough to get the motorist into the book, when the officer pulled the motorist over, the motorist offered him a massage as a bribe, it turns out that the motorist was a masseur. fortunately the officer wasn't in the mood, maybe the gentleman just rubbed the officer the wrong way.

4 out of 5 stars Exhaustive but spotty........2007-01-09

Not a bad endeavor indeed, to try to list as many noteworthy perfomers during the 60's. You do get the popular entertainers like Elvis, Beatles, etc., but, considering that this book was written in the UK, many USA performers did not make the grade, so the reader on some of those who did make it to the pages included here will not get any new information.
Of those performers who are included, and are familiar to the USA, the information is at times spotty and incorrect. The lack of pictures for the many that are not familiar or had one hit then went missing on the Pop Charts would have been a bonus, since we all pretty much know who the Beatles are by now.
So, overall i was impressed with the many entries concerning pop music from the UK's point of view, i was not impressed by the omissions. Considering the popularity of country music in the UK that was imported from the US, not many were mentioned here.
Another thing, and to those who were young enough to remember, tho our country had a 'British Invasion', the UK also had an 'USA' invasion, when Motown, Girl Groups and Garage Bands were imported and saw many hits there.

Hi everybody, First of all I am not reviewing the book as such but I thought that I just had to write and thank you for your great service. I ordered the above book plus the 60's Encyclopedia and yes I did pay extra postage but I placed my order at Mid day [UK] time on friday the 25th November 2005 and received both Items at Mid Day [UK]time on Monday the 28th November 2005. I would not have got them this quick if I had ordered them from a UK source which of course I could not have done because they are out of print over here. Great work Guys Many thanks Stuart Jones UK.

I would love to be able to review this book, but... Amazon (Still!!!) shows this as shipping within 24 hours. Don't believe it, I've been waiting since November and have approved numerous delays, just today I approved another. Just so you know, this book takes 2 months to ship (minimum!), and I still don't know when I'll get it. By the way, same deal for the Encyclopedia of 70s Music.

Amazon, it is time to be honest to your patrons, change the estimated shipping date to something realistic!

      5 out of 5 stars This one's great!.......2000-11-22

This is easily the best 60's music reference book.It covers all the obvious supergroups, but also the one-hit wonders & even some of the obscure garage/psychedelic groups. You can disagree with the star ratings for each records, but the reviewer tries to be objective & it's really useful for the casual user.Of course the reviews are a summary(how many pages would be enough to cover the Beatles or the Stones?) & the emphasis is in mainstream groups,so it's not enough for the serious 60's collectors (try "a tapestry of delights" for great lost U.K. gems or "fuzz, acid & flowers" for the U.S.A. scene),but for most music lovers, this is a must!

As a classical flutist, I have learned alot from this book "Improvising Jazz Flute". It has taught me how to add real emotions and passion into my playing. It has also been an intellectual discovery in letting myself go while improvising! I recommend this book to anyone who plays the flute at any age. It will really open your eyes and make you think about your playing.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE !!!.......2002-12-06

This is a wonderful book for flute music. If you love the idea of playing jazz but do not know how to improvise, this is a GREAT book to learn by. The jazz purests would love music like this...improvised, and absolutley good fun to play. Horace Young unlocks the mystery of improvisation through a progressive series of exercises. Even beginners will experience instant gratification while experimenting with the most popular musical styles.

This book introduces the vital elements (melody, chords, scale systems, and technique) needed to be a creative jazz flutist. Each musical example has a single note improvised melody line with the chord progression. The book shows you how to use various example riffs to create an improvised solo over the chord progression. By demonstrating this technique you can pick most jazz standards and create your own improvisational ideas using the book. An absolute must for musicians learning and playing various jazz styles.

This book will delight both classical and jazz musicians. Horace Young is an accomplished flutist and composer in the jazz industry and is also an experienced educator. The book's contemporary sounds are characteristic of modern jazz, such as whole tone and diminished scales, and has colorful chord progressions. Jazz flutists will enjoy his original jazz licks and may want to add some of them to their vocabulary of patterns.

I heard that it's sort of understood that this book is the best well-wriiten and well-descriptive book. It would be a good choice for anyone who is interested in the Future and Option's market.

        5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-07-07

If you are interested in Options you cannot miss this one. Once you've read that book, everything else you could read about options will look simple and too obvious. You'll also keep that book close to you and review some of its chapters on a regular basis.

        5 out of 5 stars Traders book........2007-05-14

I have many option and derivative books. This book concentrates on trading and not the calculus behind the models. I found it an easier book to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Deep journey on options investement strategies.......2007-05-07

Excellent reference book for all serious traders who intend to invest in a deep conscious ways with options.

If you want to learn about volatility, this is the book for you. This is more advanced than a basic volatility book, so beginners and advanced students of volatility will benefit.

Also, if you are actively trading options, this book is often quoted, so you may want to get it just so that you could follow what people are saying.
