    Book Description

Masaccio's "Trinity" examines one of the most influential paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Renowned for the grandeur of its characterizations and for the perspectival illusion of its architectural setting, the fresco was famous from the time it was painted in the 1420s, and remembered despite its having been hidden from view for nearly two centuries. This volume considers the "Trinity" in its historical and spiritual contexts, and describes the significance of Masaccio's innovative depictions of time and space.

McSweeney's Quarterly Concern #13 is all comics. It is edited by Chris Ware (author of Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Kid on Earth), and features so many artists to know and love: R. Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Daniel Clowes, Lynda Barry, Los Bros Hernandez, Adrian Tomine, Julie Doucet, and on and on. The issue also includes essays from Michael Chabon, Ira Glass, John Updike, Chip Kidd, and others. A hardcover, clothbound edition, this quarterly comes with an enormous dust jacket that does much more than guard against dust. This one makes our throats go tight.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    4 out of 5 stars Best McSweeney's issue.......2007-08-14

To date this has been the best issue of McSweeney's. If you're interested in comics in any way, or even if you just want a pretty book around the house, I highly recommend this.

There are some great pieces of prose by excellent people in the comic community, and even more importantly it's chock full of great independent comics and excerpts. It's like having the biggest Sunday comic section ever made, except all the Nancys and Family Circuses are replaced by the likes of Chester Brown and Joe Sacco.

5 out of 5 stars This book radiates.......2006-02-23

I have had this book for a year now, and I still get fits of joy every time I take it in my hands or just get a glimpse of its spine on the bookshelf. It's the book I always wanted as a child and never got. Though it contains no children's stuff (of airy-fairy kind or other), it somehow touches the wondering child in me. I wish it had nine more volumes - or better still, McSweeney's dedicated itself exclusively to alternative comics. Congratulations for designer and editor Chris Ware for creating a deeply endearing experience instead of what could have been just an ordinary anthology.

5 out of 5 stars The Best American Book.......2005-10-27

One of the best books in the history on humankind... recommended for all who want to know where the book as a form of communication has been going for the last 100 years and will go from here on ...

5 out of 5 stars Extensive overview of comic history. Just beautiful........2005-04-29

For those few who cares, the design of this book is breath-taking. Chris Ware does, not, slack. Every bit of this book is given great level of attention in making sure the details are absolutely perfect.

If you have any love for 1) Comics or 2) Book Design at all, this book is a MUST GET.

Chris Ware; most important Designer and Cartoonist right now.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Book I Own.......2005-03-12

No kidding. Even outside of the inherent quality of the content, this thing is a joy.

1 out of 5 stars Can I rate this less than 1 star?.......2005-12-02

This has to be the most archaic writing I have ever seen. I am not sure if Mr. van Dijk has ever spoken to or participated in vendor selection. His stereotyping of vendors is offensive and unacceptable!

The sad part is that a groom will pick this book up and think how miserable planning a wedding is and how to skimp on things that he should not.

Peter van Dijk has done more harm to the wedding industry than "The Electric Slide"!

1 out of 5 stars Clueless author is more like it.......2005-12-02

Why isn't there a "zero stars" option?

I'm sorry, but this book contains some of the most gawd awful advice I have ever seen dispensed to anyone planning a wedding.

Is it supposed to be a joke? If it is, Peter van Dijk missed the mark. Don't even file under Humor - file in the trash.

                    1 out of 5 stars Who's Clueless?.......2005-12-02

If the rest of this book is anything like the section on wedding videography, the author does his readers a great disservice. Evidently, Mr. van Dijk felt he needed a comic-villain to ridicule.

His stereotyping of professional videographers and what we do (yes, I'm one of them) is insulting, based on ignorance, and many years out of date ("ugly Klieg light"? Excuse me? They're almost 100 years old!). Extremely light-sensitive cameras have been around for several years. We don't blind you any more.

Apparently, the author wasn't happy with the person who recorded his wedding. Therefore, he has made it his mission to convince others that they too will be unhappy. Never mind that your children and grandchildren (not to mention even YOU) might cherish your video 25 or 50 years from now, the great van Dijk has spoken!

Are some videographers "miserable little cretins"? I suppose so - just like some photographers, bakers, and authors. But the vast majority of us perform a valuable and creative service for our clients, and take pride in preserving the most important day in a young couple's life.

One star for at least trying to be funny. So you're going to buy this book anyway? "Fine, be that way. But don't come crying to me, Wedding Boy. I told you so. I told you so. I told you so. I told you so."

5 out of 5 stars Gets it right.......2004-06-17

I really got a huge kick out of this book. It has some really useful information. It's funny. But it's also real good spririted. A definite must read for any engaged guy.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Stuff.......2004-04-23

My mother-in-law gave me this book as a gift shortly after I popped the question. It was full of really great stuff, and it was fun to read. I would wholeheartedly recommend it. "Mom" was also super-cool enough to give me a couple of other excellent gifts -- believe it or not -- that I would also VERY STRONGLY recommend: the book "Men Are From Mars, Women are from Venus" , the DVD "New Sex Now", and "Goddess Worship" on video. All in all these four little gifts made a HUGE impact on some very amazing weeks of my life.

                      Book Description

This book explores Shakespeare films as interpretations of Shakespeare's plays as well as interpreting the place of Shakespeare on screen, within the classroom, and within the English curriculum. Shakespeare on screen is evaluated both in relation to the play texts and in relation to the realms of popular film culture. The book focuses on how Shakespeare is manipulated in film and television through the representation of violence, gender, sexuality, race, and nationalism. DeborahCartmell discusses a wide range of films, including Orson Welles' Othello (1952), Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books (1991), Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1996) and John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998).

                      2 out of 5 stars A very thin book.......2001-06-15

While very clearly written, this book disappoints both in the brevity with which it treats its subject and in the simplistic arguments it makes. The author is upset that filmmakers have not listened to academic (politically correct) critics. Branagh is bashed for being sexist, racist, you name it. Cartmell's book could be pedagogically useful, however, in creating discussion and debate among high school and college students.

                            Book Description

From 1933 to 1945, the Reich Chamber of Culture exercised a profound influence over hundreds of thousands of German artists and entertainers. Alan Steinweis focuses on the fields of music, theater, and the visual arts in this first major study of Nazi cultural administration, examining a complex pattern of interaction among leading Nazi figures, German cultural functionaries, ordinary artists, and consumers of culture. Steinweis gives special attention to Nazi efforts to purge the arts of Jews and other so-called undesirables.

Steinweis describes the political, professional, and economic environment in which German artists were compelled to function and explains the structure of decision making, thus showing in whose interest cultural policies were formulated. He discusses such issues as insurance, minimum wage statutes, and certification guidelines, all of which were matters of high priority to the art professions before 1933 as well as after the Nazi seizure of power. By elucidating the economic and professional context of cultural life, Steinweis helps to explain the widespread acquiescence of German artists to artistic censorship and racial 'purification.' His work also sheds new light on the purge of Jews from German cultural life.

What can one say about such a unique and different game as Beyond Good and Evil, except that it is one great experience!

You are Jade a journalist with a mission. Take photos of the species around the Islands where you live. But the sweet exterior hides a sinister and conspiratorial interior. People are being taken from their homes and lands, you must find out who is taking them, where they are being taken, and why they are being taken there.

With simple controls and a mixture of platform and adventure, and an opportunity to use your brain not a weapon, this game is a must. Clever in its story line and with unique gameplay (click goes the camera, click goes your mind), it goes far Beyond Good and Evil.

                            4 out of 5 stars Dazzers tip.......2004-05-20

it's overall a very good game with a good story all the way through. as you sneak and battle through countless maps to uncover a conspirisy that has lasted year's. I think this would be a five star game if it were not for the ultra hard boss leading to the worst end sequence ever...

                            4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2004-01-02

There are some games that pretty much play themselves. As far as primary objectives go, Beyond Good and Evil is one of them. The game is good, but the puzzles are relatively uncomplicated for a stealth based game, and fighting is just as straightforward. In this context, it's fair to ask what purpose a strategy guide serves. Sarcasm aside, the top answer has to be that it is a cool souvenir.

Well, there are some other things. The walkthrough will get you photos of all the creatures needed for the subquest, and that is an important source of early game cash. Since there aren't dependable sources of income that is a valuable service. Ditto for making sure you find all the pearls lying about. But, for the most part, this is a well-written, intelligent guide for a game that doesn't need one.

Oddly enough, this is one of the best practical guides I've seen this year. It sticks to providing a clear, timely walkthrough with a minimum of fluff, fan service shots of Jade, or extended biographies of momentary characters. The big, overdone 300 page monstrosities that pass for strategy guides should only be this good. Whether you want this guide will depend on if you really want to accomplish everything there is to accomplish. If you do, then this guide really will help you track down those last elusive clues.

Let's say you're trying to convince a new employer to sweeten its job offer to you. Or perhaps you're buying or selling a company. Or maybe you're even solving for peace in the Middle East. If any of these scenarios is yours, Roger Fisher, Daniel Shapiro, and their colleagues at the Harvard Negotiation Project have ideas that they would like to share. Fisher's previous book, Getting to Yes, stands today as a seminal work in negotiations theory. Businesspeople in a wide variety of industries have drawn from the book's tips for deal-making and its larger framework for "interest-based negotiation", which focuses on understanding each side's interests and working together to produce proverbial win-win outcomes. In Beyond Reason, Fisher and Shapiro go one step further.

To the authors' credit, they started this new book with a clear understanding of the previous one's chief shortcoming. Though Getting to Yes introduced a powerful paradigm for negotiations, it did not fully address a critical element of most deals: emotions, and the messy human details that can distract from purely rational decision-making. If both negotiators are consistently lucid, fair, and calm, the game has a certain set of rules, but if--as in most situations--the different parties get excited, angry, sad, insulted, and so on, then those rules change. That expanded focus forms the basis for Beyond Reason.

Fisher and Shapiro have structured this latest work around five key emotions which they identify as most critical to productive negotiations. Even though each situation has its own dynamics, they point to appreciation, affiliation, autonomy, status, and role as the most important for making each party comfortable enough to grasp the principles of rationality that maximize the chances for a win-win result.

Critics may deride this book as still too simplistic, too black-and-white, and unappreciative of life's shades of gray. The authors' pragmatic bent comes in the book's final two chapters. One takes readers through the overall process for negotiations--not just the parry-and-thrust of conversations with the other party, but also pre-conversation preparation. It's in this preparatory stage, the authors contend, where a thoughtful consideration of potential emotional dynamics can help prevent later problems. To synthesize many of the lessons they impart, Fisher and Shapiro then close their work by inviting guest commentary from the former President of Ecuador, Jamil Mahuad, who explains how he applied interest-based negotiations theory to highly charged negotiations between his country and Peru, on a border dispute in the late 1990s. It's this kind of real-life application of Fisher and Shapiro's theories that continue to give them relevance. --Peter Han

                            Book Description

In Getting to Yes, renowned educator and negotiator Roger Fisher presented a universally applicable method for effectively negotiating personal and professional disputes. Building on his work as director of the Harvard Negotiation Project, Fisher now teams with Harvard psychologist Daniel Shapiro, an expert on the emotional dimension of negotiation. In Beyond Reason, they show readers how to use emotions to turn a disagreement—big or small, professional or personal—into an opportunity for mutual gain.

                            2 out of 5 stars Worth a quick reading.......2007-10-04

I read this book right after reading "Starting with NO" by Jim Camp. My key takeaway is the awareness about the core concerns that stimulate emotions during negotiation - Appreciation, Autonomy, Affiliation, Status & Role.

It was hard for me to sustain interest with the book. I felt that there is more theory than real life stories & examples. Anyways, it is worth a quick reading.

2 out of 5 stars Good intentions, but misses some key points...........2007-07-29

This book is a little simplistic, especially considering who it is written by. It mentions taking care of your own core needs so that you won't let emotions take you over, but does not do a good job of explaining just how to do it. Emotional responses are often accompanied with actual physical tension in your body, and once the cycle starts, it is hard to stop feeding into your emotions. Emotional control isn't just a mental acknowledgement of "I have autonomy", it also requires control of your physical state. For this purpose, I think the book "Fight Your Fear and Win" is muuuuch better at teaching people to keep their cool. I am not affiliated with that author in any way, but I feel his book is very underrated. You should check it out if you want to learn how to handle stressful situations with grace.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate.......2007-03-17

This is a great book for helping individuals, families, businesses, and governments maintain relationships and resolve differences. There are real examples of how the concepts have worked in situations as difficult as international conflicts. If this book was widely used as a guide in conflict resolution, there would be hope for world peace!

5 out of 5 stars Makes you take a step back!.......2007-03-09

I hate it when I get sucked into an emotionally-charged argument and I feel like my mouth and feelings are totally out of control. This book does a great job in deconstructing typical arguments and examining what is happening in each step of the conversation. It helped me understand people's mindsets better, and it places me in a better position to stay calm and in control next time I have a tough conversation, while also better understanding what the other parties possibly want.

4 out of 5 stars An Easy, Straightforward Read.......2007-02-18

I read this book having no prior experience in negotiation, yet I found it simple, straightforward and easy to understand. The main thrust of this book is acknowledging the emotional aspect of negotiation, thereby strengthening your ability to negotiate to your fullest potential. Negotiation, as used in this text, can range from personal day-to-day interaction, to international dispute resolution.

In order to categorize the ideas that the authors consider under the umbrella of "emotion," they have listed them as: Expressing Appreciation, Building Affiliation, Respecting Autonomy, and Acknowledging Status.

With in each of these categories the authors detail things to be aware of, how to balance your emotions and how to be prepared. What I really appreciated about this text was the follow-up to the academic side with practical application and their own personal experience. The whole last chapter is aptly delegated to how these principles worked in action when the presidents of Peru and Equator met to negotiate a land settlement in the late 90's. The president of Equator had previously taken classes in these principles from one of the authors, and applied them in these negotiations.

I found this an interesting and applicable read and recommend it to those who are looking for a rounding to their understanding of negotiation.
