Product Description
Expressive arts therapy is introduced in this exploration of the basic principles and foundations in using the arts in psychotherapy. A discussion of polyaesthetics, crystallization, intermodal theory, and the roles of expression and catharsis provide a theoretical foundation for understanding this creative approach to therapy. Asking the question: What happens when a client's art-making is received by the therapist?, the special considerations in the practice of expressive arts therapy are summarized, including relationship as art, play, structure and framing, low-skill and high-sensitivity work, and the phenomenon of the surprising experience that comes when a therapist and client work in a creative space together. This is a fundamental resource for all who consider the use of the arts in therapy.
Product Description
This book has been described as " The definitive text on the intermodal approach to expressive arts therapy."
Book Description
The illegal trade of art, antiques, and other cultural objects is one of the most prevalent categories of international crime. Documentation is a crucial security measure, for law enforcement officials can rarely recover and return objects that have not been photographed and adequately
described. Object ID is an international standard which outlines the minimum information needed to identify stolen art objects. In this volume, Robin Thornes provides a brief history of the international development of the standard and guidelines, and describes techniques for photographing cultural
objects.

The first in a four volume series collecting the entire Age of Apocalypse storyline.
Customer Reviews:
Good series.......2007-09-05
This came out when i went to college and stopped collecting comic books for monetary reasons. I was always a huge X-Fan, and am glad I picked up the whole series. The first book is pretty cool as a retelling of X-Men #1, with Magneto in place of Professor X and Apocalypse filling in for Magneto as the Big Bad.
Read back to back the whole series seems a bit disjointed, but you'll have that with a cross title series. If you are an X-Men lover, and are in for a long story, this is a good series to have.
great storyline.......2007-05-13
this includes all the comic that is associated w/ the AoA storyline so you don't miss a thing. it might be a little confusing for the average reader who has no information to the AoA background, but w/ a little marvel knowledge of the universe and continuities then you will appreciate this collection a lot more.
Comics most powerful villian at his best.......2006-08-16
What can I say Ensabuh Nur is simply amazing as the anti-christ of this book he actually feels that he is God in this Story alot of shocking suff goes on in this story guys who are usually bad are good and the ones who are usually good are bad plus this story arc gave birth to many characters that are around to this day.
Book 1 for fans... Book 2 in comparison.......2006-01-21
Most fans would rather they made this book vol. 2 and the second vol. sould have been first. But this is because everyone likes the other issues (and for good reason) more.
However, If you are a true fan of the AOA series then you should have no problem accepting this as the first vol.
Yes, some of the issues in vol. 1 really art exactly the most important for readers to start with... but like I said if you are a fan then you will appreacate their attempt to lay down some backstory to the characters before you get to the meaty AOA issues.
The most obviously unnecessary series is the 4 part mini Blink seris... however, since she is a more recently added character it is, i feel, important to lay down her character before moving on.
And other back points are important too. Like the death of the scarlet witch, or the examples of the gambit-rogue-magneto love triangle.
To wrap it up... if you are a casual reader... then buy Vol.2. But if your a true AOA fan... this is a Must!
First Half is great, but Vol. 2 should be read first..........2005-11-17
The Age of Apocalypse was the high mark for the X-Men (and company) in the 1990s, and can in many ways be considered the climax of the X-Men saga.
Professor X's mentally unbalanced (yet frightfully powerful) son, Legion, had gone back in time to slay Magneto. Xavier thwarts Legion's efforts and sacrifices himself to save his friend, thus birthing a chain of events that would bring about an age of darkness and genocide. Magnus attempts to fill the void left by Xavier but must face a threat in the form of Apocalypse, an ancient mutant demigod who champions the rule of mutants over humans with the most powerful mutants gathered about his throne of skulls (oddly enough filling the role Magneto would play if not for Legion's manipulation of the time stream). [Note- this back story is not presented in this volume, although it would make much more sense than the inclusion of the Blink series at the end]
In this first volume the Age of Apocalypse unfolds in (mostly) chronological order. The first chapter (and in my humble opinion the one reason that this collection is worth buying) shows us Apocalypse's first (modern) declaration of war against the "genetically inferior", and a time when Magneto's X-Men were at peace in the sanctuary of Mt. Wundagore. The Four Horsemen, along with Sabertooth, strike at Cape Citadel (where Magneto strikes in Uncanny X-Men #1), but the X-Men intervene and save the day, but at a high cost: Magneto suffers a diminishment in power and the loss of a child.
Other items included are the meeting between Cyclops (a high ranking officer in Apocalypse's régime) and (his father) Corsair; the beginning of the romance between Rogue and Magnus; a battle between the X-Men and what has become of the Inhumans on the Blue Area of the Moon; the origin of the X-Man (the AOA's version of Cable); and the Blink mini-series (possibly the greatest flaw in this volume due to its relevance to the Exiles over the AOA overall).
Overall Vol. 1 of the AOA is good but I recommend that new readers to purchase the later volumes and only pick this one up if you can't get enough of the AOA (but even then the New Age of Apocalypse is a better outlet for such a craving).

Customer Reviews:
Actually usefull.......2007-05-19
Odly enough,I actually used some of the strange things in this book for my wedding. So,it was not only humerious in a very stressful time, but surprisingly useful, too.
Great gift, good for laughs.......2007-03-15
Let's be honest - planning a wedding is not fun. The bride does most of the work, and after many months of planning, it's easy for a bride to lose her cool when something small goes wrong. This book totally puts the big day in perspective, and can give the bride a little stress relief. Yes, it's mostly silly and contains hints such as how to make a dress out of a tablecloth or how to make a ring out of a chewing gum wrapper, but that's exactly what a stressed out bride needs to take her mind off of the planning process! Your invitation envelopes got mangled in the mail? Big deal! Brides can rest assured that worse things could happen, such as your band doesn't show up, your cake gets dropped, or your groom goes missing. It's a fun escape from the stresses of wedding planning and makes a great gift for brides to be!
It's a cute just for fun book........2006-01-30
I bought this book on a whim, and while it is definately not what I would ever call useful - it's a cute and provides a nice break from any actual wedding planning that needs to get done. The events that might actually happen at a wedding have pretty obvious suggestions, and the more creative suggestions are reserved for things that I hope would never happen (a bridesmaid coming to the ceremony drunk).
Book Description
A film tells its story not only through dialogue and actors' performances but also through the director's control of movement and shot design. Figures Traced in Light is a detailed consideration of how cinematic staging carries the story, expresses emotion, and beguiles the audience through pictorial composition. Ranging over the entire history of cinema, David Bordwell focuses on four filmmakers' unique contributions to the technique. In-depth chapters examine Louis Feuillade, master of the 1910s serial; Kenji Mizoguchi, the great Japanese director who worked from the 1920s to the 1950s; Theo Angelopoulos, who began his career as a political modernist in the late 1960s; and Hou Hsiao-hsien, the Taiwanese filmmaker who in the 1980s became the preeminent Asian director. For comparison, Bordwell draws on films by Howard Hawks, Michelangelo Antonioni, Yasujiro Ozu, Takeshi Kitano, and many other directors. Superbly illustrated with more than 500 frame enlargements and 16 color illustrations, Figures Traced in Light situates its close analysis of model sequences in the context of the technological, industrial, and cultural trends that shaped the directors' approaches to staging.
Customer Reviews:
A Highly Challenging Work.......2006-10-09
David Bordwell is one of America's most challenging film scholars. He continually offers precisely-argued alternatives taking issue with dominant academic versions of the "institutional mode of representation" of how we should look at film. This book represents a good contribution to a key debate he wishes to continue in film education, namely the importance of an analytic cognitivist based approach based upon the concept of "solving problems." It is easy to parody this argument. Many have done so in the past. But what is important is reoognizing this scholar's intellectual integrity in arguing for a "bottom-up" approach to understanding film style rather than the "top-down" methodology that has dominated most examples of contemporary post-structuralist, post-modernist, and cultural studies approaches over the past few years.
FIGURES TRACED IN LIGHT deals with key issues of cinematic style and staging. Beginning with frame analysis of some scenes from JERRY MAGUIRE, Bordwell defines the current role of "intensified continuity" in contemporary Hollywood productions and then goes back to the past to counterpose the long-take, stylistic innovations of Louis Feullade and Kenji Mizoguchi. He follows them with detailed examinations of the films of Theo Angelopoulos and Hou Hsiao-hsien in terms of their distinctive creative approaches from different historical eras. All these directors deserve to be better known and Bordwell makes his usual cogent arguments for us to return to this lost tradition of cinematic art and specific production contexts that overshadow anything in European and Hollywood cinema today. It is, in short, an argument for precise attention to cinematic detail rather than today's current tendency to gloss over significant artistic differences in favor of monolithic theories that do not explain the creative nature of particular films.
This is a lucid, well-written book taking issue with certain concepts of cultural studies sadly in vogue today which sacrifice significant details at the altar of banal generaliies. It challenges supposedly established theories such as the role of modernity influencing cinema as a twentieth-century art form as well as other ideas such as the dominant role of a "cinema of attractions" at one particular era of film history. No matter the time and location, good filmmakers are "active agents." But this does not mean that they operate in a vacuum.
As Bordwell states. "The filmmaker creates out of the norms and forms available in the craft milieu or out of the possibilities in adjacent media that can be brought into that milieu." (257) It is a modest proposal but one helping us define what makes great art as well as factors defining any great director.
As well as challenging fashionable ideas, the book is not without humor as the author's references to contemporary "Europuddings and hypehanate productions that had neither local flavor nor radical ambitions" (267) show. In addition to dragging fashionable gurus such as Zizek down from their pedastals (260-265) and arguing for a more rigorous approach to problem solving, Bordwell often comes up with witty sentences that will long remain in the reader's mind. "If you hire a tax accountant, you will be best off with one vigorously committed to problem-solving. (You don't want one who will produce a Lacanian reading of your IRS audit notification) [251] I doubt whether academic champions of Lacan and Zizek would also when they face their yearly audits rather than university departmental Merit committees!
This is a very important work, rigorous and scholarly in every sense of the work. It not only argues for the importance of a particular type of cinema illustrated by these selected directors but for a particular type of reception making us all reponsible for what we see. "HOW we manage to see more and more depends on us."

Book Description
Introducing a collection of 15 light and lively tales to solve in 10 minutes or less-featuring familiar characters from the classic Clue board game, introduced in 1949. Set in fictional Tudor Hall in 1926, these stories give readers an opportunity to sleuth out the culprit among Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs. Letitia Peacock, and the others in all manner of intrigues that are fun to solve.
Customer Reviews:
Kids who enjoy mysteries will probably like this........2007-04-04
Because it's written at a level appropriate for younger readers, this book is not the kind of thing many adults could enjoy, but "kids under 13" should have fun with it. The only time I would buy it for an adult is when the intended recipient can definitely still appreciate reading material of that level. It's a bit on the silly, simplistic side for many adults.
It could have been much better..........2004-02-19
I tried to like this book - the old series was very good. But in the end it just wasn't very good. Strike one is the lack of evidence before giving the solution. A good mystery should have an solution that is obvious when you reread it. Many of the solutions here rely on information which is never given and only make sense when extra evidence is given in the solution. Strike two is the lack of believability. I realize that Clue mysteries have always been light, but it loses something with the "I killed him because he made a mess of the house" or "Look he's dead - anyone want to go for coffee" style. And strike three is that the stories seem to drone on without really developing the story.
It could have been made so much better with a little effort.
Good. But not as good as the old series........2003-07-02
Clue Mysteries is a great book. I love how the character names and motives are the same ones given in their character descriptions on the insert in the game box. But, the comedy falls short to the comedy in the now out-of-print book series created by A.E.Parker. The mysteries are well written, and much longer than those of the original series. I really love the way Cameron describes the discovery of Mr.Boddy's body in each chapter. It's like,"Oh look. Here's John with a big, bloddy dagger sticking out of his back. Let's have some tea." So casual. Plus, at the end of each mystery, one suspect will point to another and accuse them just like in the board game. To make a long story short, too late, I'm looking forward to the sequal due out in September, and will definitely be buying it!
Book Description
Once readers develop a taste for our thrilling little mystery stories, they just want more! A fitting follow-up to our original Clue(r) Mysteries, here are 15 new light and lively mysteries to solve in ten minutes or less. This taut tales feature familiar characters from the classic Clue board game, introduced in 1949. Set in fictional Tudor Hall in 1926, these stories give readers an opportunity to sleuth out the culprit among Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, and the others in all manners of shady intrigues.
Customer Reviews:
Not much here for mystery puzzle fans.......2007-05-05
Like its predecessor Clue Mysteries: 15 Whodunits to Solve in Minutes, this book suffers from mysteries that don't work as puzzles, and aren't of much interest in any other way. In most of the 15 stories, "who done it?" is obvious, as much of the story is about the killer's motive. In others, the solution is entirely arbitrary, and any of the other characters could just as easily have been declared the culprit. The humorous aspects of the stories had already started to fall flat for me before I'd finished the first volume. I guess I shouldn't have ordered both at the same time!

In their previous book, The Balanced Scorecard, Robert Kaplan and David Norton unveiled an innovative "performance management system" that any company could use to focus and align their executive teams, business units, human resources, information technology, and financial resources on a unified overall strategy--much as businesses have traditionally employed financial management systems to track and guide their general fiscal direction. In The Strategy-Focused Organization, Kaplan and Norton explain how companies like Mobil, CIGNA, and Chemical Retail Bank have effectively used this approach for nearly a decade, and in the process present a step-by-step implementation outline that other organizations could use to attain similar results. Their book is divided into five sections that guide readers through development of a completely individualized plan that is created with "strategy maps" (graphical representations designed to clearly communicate desired outcomes and how they are to be achieved), then infused throughout the enterprise and made an integral part of its future. In several chapters devoted to the latter, for example, the authors show how their models have linked long-term strategy with day-to-day operational and budgetary management, and detail the "double loop" process for doing so, monitoring progress, and initiating corrective actions if necessary. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
In today's business environment, strategy has never been more important. Yet research shows that most companies fail to execute strategy successfully. Behind this abysmal track record lies an undeniable fact: many companies continue to use management processes-top-down, financially driven, and tactical-that were designed to run yesterday's organizations.
Now, the creators of the revolutionary performance management tool called the Balanced Scorecard introduce a new approach that makes strategy a continuous process owned not just by top management, but by everyone. In The Strategy-Focused Organization, Robert Kaplan and David Norton share the results of ten years of learning and research into more than 200 companies that have implemented the Balanced Scorecard. Drawing from more than twenty in-depth case studies-including Mobil, CIGNA, Nova Scotia Power, and AT&T Canada-Kaplan and Norton illustrate how Balanced Scorecard adopters have taken their groundbreaking tool to the next level. These organizations have used the scorecard to create an entirely new performance management framework that puts strategy at the center of key management processes and systems.
Kaplan and Norton articulate the five key principles required for building Strategy-Focused Organizations: (1) translate the strategy to operational terms, (2) align the organization to the strategy, (3) make strategy everyone's everyday job, (4) make strategy a continual process, and (5) mobilize change through strong, effective leadership. The authors provide a detailed account of how a range of organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors have deployed these principles to achieve breakthrough, sustainable performance improvements.
Presenting a practical, proven framework steeped in rich case study experience, The Strategy-Focused Organization helps solve a universal management problem-not just how to formulate strategy, but how to make it work. Building on one of the most revolutionary business ideas of our time, this important book shows how today's leaders can shape their own companies to meet the challenges and reap the rewards of a new competitive era.
Robert S. Kaplan is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at Harvard Business School. David P. Norton is President of Balanced Scorecard Collaborative, Inc.

Overview, technique and implementation.......2006-08-21
An outstandingly well written book that decribes the balanced scorecard and provides excellent examples. An effective, practical guide for C-level executives and mid-level managers for implementing strategic scorcarding. I recommned this book for the breadth and depth of the explanation of the subject matter and concise implmentation examples.
If you can measure it, you can manage it.......2006-02-28
The Balanced Scorecard was initially designed as a financial and non-financial corporate performance measurement tool. Organizations focused on strategy have taken the Balanced Scorecard and transformed it into a strategic tool for measurement. These 5 key principles transform the Balanced Scorecard:
Principle 1: Translate Strategy into Operational Terms. Describing the strategy of the organization, communicating it via the Building Scorecard in an insightful, consistent and operational manner is the cornerstone to putting strategy at the center of an organization. This principle accomplishes this by using the Balanced Scorecard to view strategy from 4 different perspectives: financial, customer, internal business processes, and learning.
Principle 2: Align the Organization to the Strategy.
The Balanced scorecard can link the many different and dispersed functions. It can clarify the values, beliefs and ideas that reflect the organization's identity, and clarify the actions mandated at the corporate level that create synergies at the business unit level.
Principle 3: Make Strategy Everyone's Everyday Job.
This principle, utilizing the Balanced Scorecard, focuses on three processes to align employees to the strategy: creating strategic awareness, defining personal and team objectives, and linking compensation to the Balanced Scorecard
Principle 4: Make Strategy a Continual Process.
The Balanced Scorecard creates a reporting system to monitor progress and serve as a link between managing strategy and managing operations. This system enables organizations to accomplish three things: link strategy and budget, close the strategy loop, and test, learn, and adapt.
Principle 5: Mobilize Change Through Executive Leadership.
The Balanced Scorecard helps executive leadership implement large scale changes that are necessary to implement new strategies. Specifically, it helps organizations specify, in detail, critical elements:
· Target customers where profitable growth will occur
· Value propositions that lead customers to do more business and at higher margins with the company
· Innovations in products, services and processes

Highly Recommended!.......2005-06-20
The fact that executives keep trying new strategic initiatives despite their abysmal rate of failure is, like second marriages, a triumph of hope over experience. Or, it may indicate just how much pressure top managers face to improve their profits. By one estimate, nine out of ten companies fail to execute their strategic visions. Yet, CEOs - who witness a world in constant flux - continue to introduce change initiatives. Are they trapped in the operational definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Or, are they just ready for this book? Authors Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton offer wise counsel to help executives break the cycle of strategic flops. They advise executives to transform their companies into "Strategy-Focused Organizations" using the "Balanced Scorecard" and "strategic mapping" tools. With these initiatives, CEOs can ensure that every employee pays attention to strategy implementation. Kaplan and Norton, the all-star co-author team who wrote "The Balanced Scorecard" and "Strategy Maps", have done it again, in this well-organized but somewhat dry volume. We strongly recommend this book to any manager who is responsible for designing or implementing a strategic change initiative.
Overblown and impractical.......2002-11-22
Having used the BSc a few times in my work, I expected this to be a hepful addition to my knowledge base in the area. I found that it added little to the author's other published tomes and to his articles in journals like HBR. Although the basic concept is sound, the implementation challenges are dealt with as you'd expect from an ivory tower-based profesoor and are several steps removed from the challenges that most of my real-world, and smaller company clients, need to address. I truly felt as though I didn't get my money's worth with this purchase and I should have stuck with the materials I already had by the author that was available in other forms. I would have saved time, money and a degree of frustration.
A must have tool for business improvement.......2002-05-23
If you're attempting to improve the way you do business, this book is a must have. It is a little dry so you have to be committed to using the concepts presented. If you can manage to stick with it, you will reap the benefits of the BSC. Good Luck!
