One of the beautiful things about comics is that it is possibly the best medium for combining education and entertainment. No one knows this better than Larry Gonick, whose Cartoon History series spans many subjects. Whether you are a fan of history, comics, or Gonick's books,
The Cartoon History of the Universe I is a great place to start. Part I contains volumes 1 to 7, from the Big Bang to Alexander the Great.
Book Description
An entertaining and informative illustrated guide that makes world history accessible, appealing, and funny.
Customer Reviews:
I wish we had this during grade school?.......2007-06-09
I highly recommend this book. It's well written, it's occasionally funny and very readable. Volumes 1 to 7 starts with the Big Bang, to the evolution, to the first great civilizations (Sumer, Egypt and the Greeks), and ends with Alexander the Great reaching India.
I was so impressed about the presentation that I thought - why isn't there an animated version of this book (and the other volumes)? Wouldn't it be nice for kids to be able to get their history lessons via Cartoon Network?
But then I reached the part about what early Greek women did with their goats and sheep and how the Spartans treated young boys and I thought "well, maybe it's better if it stays in book form".
My only gripe is the lack of an index. Certainly handy when important names and places are regularly mentioned (like any other history book) .
!.......2007-02-28
This book is amazingly good. It is funny and educational and incredibly well drawn. You should BUY it.
Great Classroom Library Addition.......2006-03-17
I bought this book for my 6th grade classroom and ended up reading it myself. It's a favorite with the students though there is a bit of nudity that I had to censor with a black marker.
superb.......2005-09-07
Larry Gonick's book on statistics inspired me. I still don't understand probability but I was amused. His history text shows again that he is smarter then I am but I understoond the text and learned about the time it took to get here from the beginning of time and the maze of attorcities that leads from one powerful kingdom to another. Cartoons help make powerful messages more tolerable. I may buy all of his work.
More Informative Than A Semester In World Civ 101.......2005-08-18
The first and best volume in Mr. Gonick's history series (just when IS the fourth book coming out???) truly does present more practical information about the history of our planet and the rise of the human species, than any history class I was ever in. And whatsmore, the author has made it fun to learn all this. I understand this book was edited by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and what a gem she found to give us! Not only would I enthusiastically recommend this and all works in Larry Gonick's series to historian or casual reader alike, I would go so far as to say these are all masterpieces of erudition and intelligent presentation.

Cute Parody of Popular Diet Book.......2005-10-09
When I saw this chic little volume in the bookstore, I admit to being attracted to the R. Nichols type illustration done in pastels on the front cover---so reminiscent of the high-strutting Parisian walking her (yikes) dog on the cover of popular diet book "French Women Don't Get Fat". At first, I thought this was yet another dieting treatise, yet another way to capitalize on America's love/hate relationship with our cheese-loving, wine-scarfing, chocolate-chomping buddies from across the ocean who somehow after all this eating manage to fit into those tight little couture pencil skirts and red and white apache tops. And then I saw the cat featured in the drawing---mais oui, it was a cat. Bien sur, I said, ce livre, ce n'est pas serieux; c'est une blague.
And then I got passed those cute little illustrations and actually read it.
Okay, I'm being a little obnoxious, but believe it or not, Henri de la Barb, in the guise of a parody, has written an even more entertaining and informative book than Mireille Guiliano. Guiliano's book, a sucre-filled memoir containing a French arsenal of vague tips detailing how she was defeated by the battle of the bulge America-style and had to retreat back to France and the methods of a certain Dr. Miracle to re-attain her Gitane-slim physique, contains anecdotes and recipes spread over 200+ pages. De La Barb, offers equally compelling information that can be utilized to actually lose weight with less than half the verbage, Veuve Clicquot-free advertising and ooh-la-las.
Okay, some of the recipes are a bit on the 'cat'astrophic side---our feline amis/amies certainly recommend mice and not mousse---but the idea of eating real food (in this case, for humans) prepared well and partaking of only a small portion seems to eptomize the best of common sense / highly nutritional dieting. Les Chats de la Barb actually eat seasonally, recommend purchasing only enough food for a day, and sum up all their tips in a shameless abbreviated mimicry of Guiliano rather arrogant much ado about nothing.
But his cats are practical too, knowing that they will not be able to run off on a whim to the local Dean & DeLuca's just to buy the best triple cream and Valrona truffle, he makes allowances for those situations where convenience is key.
Consequently, De La Barb's book is much more fun and speaks la verite; we laugh out loud at his prissy little pussies and their over-the-top antics, but we are not quite sure whether or not to laugh at Guiliano's pandering of her nationality and the odd mystique it has over many Americans.
C'est une blague, n'est-ce pas? Mais pas de blagues, buy this book instead, its funny, doesn't take itself seriously and its much faster to read, delivering the same message without the hype. Of course, its a humorous treat for cat-lovers, too.
Henri de la Barbe est magnifique!.......2005-09-20
If you are familiar with French For Cats, Advanced French for Exceptional Cats, and Poetry for Cats (as all of my feline friends have been) you know what to expect. And Beard delivers. This man truly loves his cats and French language and culture, and remains the master at spoofing recent trends. His target this time is French Women Don't Get Fat, and you will laugh out loud at the clever way in which Beard transfers this dietary wisdom to cats. As always, the cats are laughing at humans...

Book Description
Molly Ringwald, Kevin Bacon, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Mickey Rourke and John Cusak: they make up the '80s phenomenon that was known as the Brat Pack. But why are some of these actors supersta and some relegated to the wings? The answers are all here in this compelling compendium.
Customer Reviews:
calling all sportos, metalheads, geeks, sluts, dweebies..........2003-07-12
This book is an essential read for all wanna be Brat Packers out there. It is a comprehensive guide to the quintessential films and actors of the 80's phenomena. We are transported back in time and allowed the pleasure of reliving the birth of the ultra - knowing Generation X.
The teen movie of the 1980's was in its decade undervalued yet through informative and nostalgic retrospect this book depicts the rise, development and lasting social force of the emotionally charged collaboration of movies, performers and directors, who came to define the era.
Within the first section of the book the authors present an entertaining analysis of the key components of the Brat Pack cinema, with the films chronologically examined in detail. The plots are relived, the unmistakable one liners firmly in place and the casting and directoral decisions revealed.
The second section of the book gives biographical accounts of the indiviual performers; examining their rise, their fall and their contribution to the genre.
This book is simply priceless. It is an absolute necessity; a highly entertaining, suitably reminiscent, invaluably revealing guide to unarguably some of the most enjoyable films of the 80's.

Insider tips on betting strategies, pressuring opponents, discovering bluffs, playing deceptively, and chip leverage. Bonus chapter on no-limit hold'em satellites!
Customer Reviews:
Decent.......2007-02-19
Relays basic strategy but doesn't tell you how to satellite in other than how to enter
Useless.......2006-12-12
Don't bother spending your money on this. The five pages on satellites in Lindgren's book far outweigh any content in this...its mostly just stories of past satellites with some obvious advice thrown in (auto-checking online is a tell!!! thanks for that)
Not as good as his other books but worth a read.......2006-11-04
I am a big fan of McEvoy's books, probably because I tend to play poker in more or less the same fashion that he does and also generally specialize in tournament play. This book is good, but not on par with some of his other books, such as Championship Poker, etc. I think my biggest disappointment was two-fold: There was a substantial chunk of the book devoted to satellite and super satellite play for limit events (which I don't play at all, and seems on the fringes since most premier events are no limit), and the section on internet satellite play was small. I would have liked to see more content there, especially since this is where most people buying this book will be playing there satellite play. Yes we all know how Moneymaker turned $39 into $2.5M, but it would have been nice to have more in-depth discussion about accomplishing that, especially in extremely low-buy in super satellites with large fields. I did find some useful information in this book I hadn't found elsewhere (the mark of a good poker book in my opinion) so I would recommend it to anyone thinking about using some portion of their poker bankroll as a springboard into large, big-money tournaments.
Nothing new.......2006-08-26
This is mostly a rehash of general tournament advice. If you read everything, you will want to read this, since it is good advice. But if you are pretty experienced, you probably won't learn much.
Delivers as promised.......2005-05-27
If you have never been to the WSOP and plan to play a satellite for your entry you should read through this book at least once. While the online sections can leave a little to be desired, there isn't much difference it strategy or information, I recommend this book to anyone with questions about satellite play. It will cover your basics and break down each tournment into stages so you can focus on one piece at a time.
