Continuing right where the first book left off,
The Cartoon History of the Universe II once again combines Gonick's superb cartooning with the lessons of history. Find out what Lynn Johnston, creator of
For Better of Worse, calls "a gift to those of us who love to laugh and who love to learn." Part II contains volumes 8 to 13, from the Springtime of China to the Fall of Rome (and India, too!).
Book Description
Here's a new installment of the phenomenal bestseller that Publishers Weekly selected as one of the twelve graphic books of all time. Spanning ages and continents from Ancient India to Rome and China in A.D. 600, Volume II is hip, funny, and full of info.
B & W illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
From the Springtime of China to the Fall of Rome.......2007-05-18
This is the second volume of Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe. The series tells the history of the world, in comic book form. Lots of bad puns are thrown in to keep things interesting. This particular volume focuses on India, China and Rome. This is a fun way to learn history.
my favorite of the series.......2007-02-06
Every book in this series is both funny and intelligent. Much of the dumb humor comes from getting the facts straight. Even small details like Galba jumping into his boyfriend's arms after learning that he has been declared emporer is from Tacitus.
This is my favorite by virtue of being about Ancient Rome, its rise as a Republic, the height of Empire and its collapse into the dark ages. The fact that he doesn't flinch from the more scandalous details (such as Tiberius' proclivities towards little boys) or skimp over some of the more interesting controversies of the time (Josephus comes off as a wily con artist) makes it that much more entertaining. And I also would have never read The Fall and Decline of the Roman Empire had it not been for this book. And trust me, Edward Gibbons rocks.
Besides, the Western History, Gonick also spends a great deal of time with Indian and Chinese history. One of the major crimes of our education system is the fact that this is all probably very basic material, but the best source for it is probably in a cartoon book. Still, it's a great cartoon book and you can't fault the cartoon book for the deficiencies in other educational venues.
The universe in comics... finally..........2007-01-25
Comics have no limits. Anything can get depicted with words and pictures. And, after Larry Gonick completes his "Cartoon History of the Universe" series, most everything will be. Over the past three decades Gonick has stretched modern comics from the purely fictional into the scientific and historic. He has cartoonified esoteric subjects that would bore most medieval scriveners. Snoozers like statistics, genetics, physics, chemistry (and the one exception, that great unmentionable - blush, blush - puritans look away quick!) come alive like golems to terrorize despisers of knowledge. These collections make learning palatable even for those with Beavis and Butthead mentalities. As such, that unobtainable indefatigable unreachable, almost paradoxical, oxymoron of oxymorons, the "educational comic," seems close to fruition and perfection. Somewhere an educator just gagged. Above all, as if turning the comics industry on its head wasn't enough, Gonick has undertaken his magnum opus: a multivolume chronological multicultural history of our known universe in cartoon form. Overachiever detector! Bzzzt! Bzzzzt!
Book I, volumes 1-7, of this pen and paper masterwork started with a BIG BANG and wormed its way to Alexander the Great's voluminous conquests. Book II, volumes 8 - 13, picks up where it left off, but not before taking a dizzying tour through India and China. Volume eight covers India from Harappa to the Bhagavad-Gita (with its eerie page length depiction of Krishna's "revelation" to Arjuna) and Ashoka with the origins of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism tossed into the cultural salad. Gonick also manages a stunning two page summary of the Mahabharata, the 74,000 verse Hindu epic creation poem. Only comics could pull this off. Volumes 9 and 10 grapple with the infinity of Chinese history. Court intrigues, gory wars, philosophers such as Sun Wu, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Chuang-Tzu, and a breakneck tour through the Hsia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties make for entertaining and brain bursting reading. Knowledge overload. Be sure to cool the brain often. These sections provide an efficient gloss of Chinese history up to 9 A.D. Then to Rome for volumes 11 - 13. Via a detour through the short life of Alexander the Great, King Romulus (after rudely impaling Remus on a sword) founded the city that still bears his name. That's what killing your brother gets you, apparently. Great morality tale there, indeed. Later, after love-starved Romans hauled off the Sabine women, one of Tarquin the Proud's cronies raped Lucretia ("Don't blame me! I never heard this word before..."). Out of honor she stabbed herself and Junius Brutus led the charge to overthrow the corrupt kings and initiated the Roman Republic. All was sort of fine until the Gauls invaded, (depicted here with various characters from Asterix), the Ides of March, and Caesar Octavianus took full power. The Roman Empire began. Book II ends with the fall of the Western Roman empire. Lots more happens in between, of course, but world history often defies even cursory summary.
One interesting interlude involves Jesus or, as the book calls him, "Jeshua Ben Joseph" ("Jesus" doesn't come along until the Greeks name Jeshua "Christ" or "Messiah"). Gonick makes brief mention of the Gospels of Mary Magdalene and even depicts the unmentionable. (Oooh! NOW you want to read it, don't you? Slobber! Drool!) Gonick takes a unique look at this pivotal point in history. His ultimate viewpoint emanates from the asides.
"The Cartoon History of The Universe" won't transform anyone into a historian. Information overload sags the brain quick and often. Chinese history in particular will seem like a blur. So much happens. Regardless, this series has the power, unlike most text-based histories, to suck any skeptic into the bizarre narrative that makes up human history. If nothing else, readers will get a good overview of just how varied, strange, violent, provocative, and sometimes cruel our past is. We're goofy creatures. No series has made this point better, or more humorously, or with better cartoons, than this one.
Great Service!.......2007-01-12
The book is really funny. It arrived quickly, with no hassle at all!
Great Book!.......2006-07-18
I teach 6th grade social studies and have found that these books are very popular as well as informative. In fact, I am replacing the ones I have because they are falling apart!

OMG.......2006-11-30
I was reading this plane on a flight....laughing hysterically out loud. Finally, this woman next to me asked "What are you reading?" I showed her the cover...and she responded "HMMMM, never heard of it."
Yeah right, this person probably did the walk of shame getting to the airport!
Book Description
Gun Crazy is the very essence of film noir, a low-budget, high-octane thriller whose reputation has grown with every passing year since its first appearance in 1950. While its story of two doomed lovers, crashing through the small towns of the mid-West, running the gauntlet of hold-ups and shoot-outs to a bloody nemesis, owes much to the true-life tale of Bonnie and Clyde, the film achieves an intense poetry eloquently expressive of the dark side of the American Dream.
The film's origins in the skid-row operation of the King Brothers are expertly described by Jim Kitses. He traces Gun Crazy's roots in the rain-slicked, night-time world of noir, and in the postwar American society that gave birth to it. He teases out the effects of the Production Code, and the distinctive contributions of director Joseph H. Lewis, writers MacKinlay Kantor and the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo, and stars, Peggy Cummins and John Dall. Above all, Kitses provides a wonderfully alert and informative reading of a small masterpiece, a film that rises triumphantly above the modesty of its means.
Customer Reviews:
A great little companion to the B-movie classic.......2005-07-27
When I popped "Gun Crazy" into my DVD player a while back, I was just hoping for an entertaining "B-movie" experience... you know, guns, crooks on the lam, a tempress who tries to be good but just can't, all that kind of stuff. So I was quite surprised that, in addition to getting all those things, I also got an extremely well crafted, excellently directed film with great performances and complex things to say about guns, the American dream, child psychology, and gender roles. It was a great film. So, I wasn't surprised to later see that the British Film Institute produced one of its thin BFI Classics volumes about "Gun Crazy". Written by film scholar Jim Kitsis, this is a great examination of the movie and very entertaining to read. I particularly liked the 5-page or so postscript, which describes the author's visit to the home of Peggy Cummins, the female lead in the film, in 1995. Ms. Cummins shares lots of great stories about the film with the author, as well as her reactions to the author's opinions about the film. A highly recommended little book for those who enjoyed "Gun Crazy".
Gun Crazy remembered superbly.......2000-09-14
Jim Kitses did a wonderful job of remembering this great, great film, which was magnificently directed by Joseph H. Lewis. For those of us who love this movie, Kitses left its fans with wonderful memories.
Excellent, concise study of this astonishing B-movie noir........1997-01-19
Kitses, a film professor at San Francisco State and author of the seminal Western study "Horizons West," brings his full powers to bear on this, one of the finest B-movies ever made. Alternating between film history and textual analysis, Kitses weaves a brief but rich story of the unlikely genesis of an American cult classic. He also provides revealing insights on the film's relationships to the western genre. One of the best in the BFI Film Classics series

Please disregard the 'audiofile' review listed above.......2005-12-16
That review must be describing a different book on tape in the series.
So, here's the scoop on 'The Bold West: Edition 4'
There are 3 unabridged stories read by three different readers. The stories are:
'Death Rides This Trail' by Steve Frazee. It is the longest and definitely the best of the three stories. It concerns a family of settlers and the struggles they have after the father is killed in a senseless gunfight. Good character development and an entertaining story. Often funny and often sad. It was originally published in 1953. I give this story 4 out of 5 stars.
'Yaqui' by Zane Grey. Originally published in 1920, this is the story of Yaqui, the young chief of the Yaqui Indians of Western Mexico. The Yaqui were hunted down and killed or moved to the Yucatan Peninsula to be enslaved in the Sisal plantations to make rope. This is the worst story of the three by far. The writing was stilted and overly formal and the reader was the worst of the three. The 'gotcha' moment at the end seemed more like a bad 'Twilight Zone' idea. to tell you the truth, it seemed like Mr. Grey had two short stories that he couldn't finish so he stuck them both together just to get them both finished. I give it 1 star out of 5.
'Back Trail' by T.T. Flynn. Originally published in 1949, this is the story of a love triangle involving a cowboy, a rancher and a young woman who manages the local hotel. It is also a story of personal redemption through a change of heart. This story had the most potential, but it was skimpily written so it was hard to fathom the relationship between all of the members of this love triangle. I give it 3 stars out of 5.
So, 4 stars + 1 star + 3 stars = 8 stars. Divide 8 stars over three stories and you get 2.66, or 3 stars.

A tremendously exciting read.......1997-11-22
"A tremendously exciting read" Judge Sanford M. Brook
Deals with a real trial.......1997-11-21
Patricia Williams, Acting Justice of N.Y. Supreme Court says about Gun Crazy: "I truly enjoyed Mr. Booker's writing. He knows the secret of making you want to actually visit the scenes he describes so well. . . Mr. Booker's book is different than others, because it deals with the many different aspects of a real trial. Hence, the characters are drawn with detail and care."
Warren Burnett recommends this book.......1997-11-20
Warren Burnett said: "Superbly, writer Booker honors his craft in this story of a courtroom trimph made possible by the grit and grace of Kerrville's Scott Stehling, a true examply of the decent and talented lawyer."
Racehorse Haynes recommends this book.......1997-11-20
Racehorse Haynes said: "A brutal senseless crime, a skilled trial lawyer's fight for Justice for a young man in the wrong place at the wrong time. A must read for all interested in trial by jury."

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected!.......2000-09-20
Author does offer some good related suggestions for music class activities, however, there is a lot of verbage to wade through in order to find them. Too much non related information. This is more like a textbook of all the possible dos and donts and classroom situations you could ever think of. (Perhaps some teachers would like to be made aware of these, however I would perfer to have the basic music instruction activities.) This was not what I expected from a book boasting to contain resource materials for the elementary music classroom. (The illustrations were a disappointment as well; less than inspiring.)
Not what I'd hoped for.......2000-09-09
I can't understand why this book isn't more helpful than it is. The description of it sounds wonderful. I read through the whole book in a week or two, eager to improve my teaching, and even dug it out to re-read last week, but my conclusion is still the same ... I wish I had not spent my money on it.
Some of the suggested activities sound so out-of-touch it's actually funny. The author describes teaching a "line dance" or "aerobics move" to middle schoolers who "ahh and ohh excitedly" and ask to do it again. I don't think so! Suggestions to "make your activities interesting" are things like, instead of just having kids clap their hands, have their clap their hands to their left, then to their right. Still sounds boring to me!
The advice on procedures was not very enlightening either. There are several pages about how to use correct grammar, and another section on making sure your clothes are clean and neat. And did I really need to spend money on a book to tell me to put a post-it note in a book to mark my page?
I wish I had returned this one.
Great Practical Info for Music Teachers.......2000-04-30
This book does a great job of covering a wide range of topics that are especially relevant to the music teacher in an elementary school. It has lots of ideas on how to make many classroom procedures, such as passing out instruments and taking turns playing them, go more smoothly; ways to learn all your kids names, a particularly tough task for those of us who literally have hundreds of students; and dozens of other things that tend to get overlooked in music education courses.
The author includes a lot of common-sense details on classroom procedures, such more effective use of visual aids, that a lot of us tend to overlook when planning our class time.
The book, which is written in a very easy-to-read, conversational style, has the kind of real-life information that the average music education textbook doesn't discuss. I was able to make immediate use of many of the ideas I got from the book, and I found my music classes running a lot more smoothly as a result.

Not My Cup Of Tea.......2007-02-18
This game was disappointing for me, not what I was expecting. It might be okay for someone else. There were no problems with it, I just didn't care for the game itself.
Unnecessary ... But Shiny.......2006-03-09
Yes,
It's worth (...)but if you've played the old N64 version you'll remember what to do anyways.
You'll be more than offended though that the swearing in the game is edited out!
They swore more on the N64 version 5 years ago!?
What's the G-O Xbox?
I nearly threw great mighty poohs at the screen in disgust.
...oh yeh the book...
It's fun, even if the game is an edited crap pile.
Much Needed.......2005-08-15
If you did not complete the original version of the game on N64 this guide will come in very handy for single player mode on the XBOX. It's only 10 bucks.
OK Guide for One Player.......2005-08-03
This guide is nice only for the one player game. I originally bought this because I was looking for more indepth information about the multiplayer online version of this game, but it was sorely lacking in that area. It only gave the basic info and didn't even include stuff about powered up weapons or things that aren't listed in the instruction guide. Overall this guide was a definate waste of money since the one player game is about 5 years old and there was an old guide for that game already.
Book Description
Business guru Verne Harnish's firm Gazelles has brought hundreds of businesses to fast-growth profitability. Now he shares entrepreneurial secrets in this must-read business primer. Harnish has discovered John D. Rockefeller's underlying strategy. Further study uncovered three winning habits:
*Priorities: A few rules remain consistent with a firm's core values and long-term goal. Others change regularly -- what Harnish calls the Top 5 and Top 1 of 5.
*Data: Key metrics should be measured over time (Smart Numbers); short-term metrics provide a tighter focus on an aspect of the business (Critical Numbers).
*Rhythm: A well-organized set of meetings keep everyone aligned and accountable.
In addition to case studies, a bonus chapter co-authored by Rich Russakoff reveals winning tactics to get banks in competition to finance your business venture. MASTERING THE ROCKEFELLER HABITS provides necessary tools for making strategically smart decisions and for keeping everyone aligned and accountable to those decisions.

Simple, easy methods to grow your business.......2007-09-24
I have read many business books over my career as an entrepreneur having founded two successful companies. Mastering the Rockefeller habits is the simplest best book I have ever read on growing and managing a small to medium business. Verne has a great gift of providing just the simple nuggets that you need to know without all of the other stuff. An addition to Verne's book that I have found enormous value in is defining the values in more detail as outlined in Gregg Lederman's book Achieve Brand Integrity: Ten Truths You Must Know to Enhance Employee Performance and Increase Company Profits. He calls these brand concepts and outlines a great approach to defining the beliefs and behaviors that will make these brand concepts come alive. Between these two books you have an amazing view of how to build a successful company.
John.......2007-07-30
If you want to make the critical move from planning to executing this book is a MUST read!!
The habits that will make your business a predictable enterprise for growth.......2007-07-08
This is an important resource for salespeople, managers, entrepreneurs and executives alike. Verne Harnish does a great job in breaking down the habits of Mr. Rockefeller, who is as close to a model of business excellence as you can find.
Harnish goes over all the business basics, such as setting priorities, analyzing data and creating the right rhythm for the business. One of my favorite lines from this book is: "Until your people are mocking you, you've not repeated your message enough". This statement is true when it comes to the values, objectives and the methods of implementation of the company.
The message of this book, if practiced, will make your business a predictable enterprise for growth. The book has so many good points that I stopped highlighting after the first chapter, lest I highlight the entire book. Enjoy!
Amazing Book!.......2007-02-27
I read this a few times because it was just
that good. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Helps Entrepreneurs Focus.......2007-01-31
Having assessed/coached over 6,000 executives, I've heard many accounts of how difficult it is for entrepreneurs, with a lot of great ideas, to focus their efforts. Mastering the Rockefeller Habits is the perfect manual for breaking down all the components of a business, sorting through priorities, and then putting together simple plans to execute.
Harnish interacts with entrepreneurs all the time, and he creates venues so that entrepreneirs can learn from each other. He is an astute observer of what works, and he does a great job in this book of sharing the best practices and wisdom of people who have become successful.
