Book Description

In My Italian Sketchbook, 30-year-old artist Florine Asch follows the tradition of the 18th century Grand Tour, when writers, architects and members of European high-society embarked on long journeys around Italy, taking in key cultural sites, often sketching as they went.

Asch's sketches are full of character, light-hearted, spirited and bursting with charm. Her fresh approach leaves us full of respect for the classical wonders of Italy's art and architecture, but also opens our eyes to the equally delightful architecture of today's stores, the markets, and local life.

My Italian Sketchbook is a must-have for Italy lovers and all those who paint in watercolor or simply appreciate this delicate art.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful watercolors of glorious Italy!.......2007-06-17

I have loved Italy since I was a child, something about the people, the food, the great scenery, old, historic monuments, there is just so much to learn about and appreciate, and this wonderful gem of a sketchbook does just that. Florine Asch takes us on a Grand Tour of Italy which is brought to life by her amazing, beautiful, detailed watercolors - MIlan & the Lakes [also noteworthy are depictions of daily life like in the bustling markets], Verona, Venice, Florence, Rome [the Piazza Navona], the Bay of Naples & Sicily. It is a riot of color, a lush depiction of Italian life, and the beautiful rendering of the Italian countryside & cities. A wonderful addition to the Sketchbooks series [of which I am a collector].

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth the money!.......2007-06-13

Usually, I simply rate items based on whether I like them or not, but Florine Asch's "My Italian Sketchbook" was worth the effort of a comment. I borrowed this book from the library and have now purchased this book because I was astounded by the beauty and volume of drawings in this Sketchbook.

The sketches are absolutely superb and nowhere close to being the rigid architecturally perfect "sketches" which I have seen in other books. Now I greatly respect the talent that it takes to do those other sketches but as a fellow watercolorist, I prefer the looser quality and nature of Ms. Asch's. Hopefully she has future holidays planned and thus future sketchbooks. As a side note, I would love to see the two sketchbooks relating to France (one in Paris and another in Alsace, I believe) of hers which seem to be very difficult to get here in the U.S. Highly recommend this book. It is beautiful and gives one a strong desire to travel!

5 out of 5 stars More than 5 stars.......2006-02-01

Beautiful book. The artist makes even the most mundane object interesting. Inspiring for both the armchair traveler and aspiring artist. This is one fo the best in the "My X Sketchbook" series.

5 out of 5 stars The Wonders Of Italy Gloriously Portrayed In Watercolors!.......2003-08-07

Florine Asch allows us to accompany her on a Grand Tour of Italy. She takes us along, at a leisurely pace, that does recall a time when travel was more about the journey than the destination. Dominique Fernandez, who writes the Introduction to "My Italian Sketchbook," tells us that "tourist" originally meant, "one who travels, not to arrive, but aimlessly, as the servant of beauty."

Ms. Asch's attachment to Italy is palpable in her glorious sketches, all executed in watercolor. Her elegant sketches, 100 of them, depict the known sites, and the scenes that are rarely seen by the hurried tourist. She captures a sunset view of Saint Peter's in Rome, the beauty of Lake Como, a Tuscan landscape, the medieval majesty of Sienna, the Renaissance glory of Firenze, the Duomo in Milan, a studio filled with Greek plaster figures, a horse and buggy by Rome's Trevi Fountain, the carnival in Venice, street scenes in Naples, a Sicilian piazza, and marketplace.

Florine Asch uniquely portrays the ordinary and extraordinary vistas, and views, of Italy. My tourist photographs never looked like this. A wonderful book to keep as a remembrance, or to give as a gift. Anyone who loves all things Italian, will love this book. I certainly do!

Want more of Don Rosa's monumental The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck? The Life of Scrooge McDuck Companion is it, six new chapters that weave through the original 12 that have the pre-miser Scrooge encountering Magica De Spell, the Beagle Boys, Annie Oakley and other Western icons, and Teddy Roosevelt at the Panama Canal. Even better, "The Prisoner of White Agony Creek" and "Hearts of the Yukon" reveal Scrooge's (gasp) romantic side in his brief but intense relationship with Glittering Goldie. Filling out the volume are an excerpt from another Rosa tale of the early Scrooge, "Last Sled to Dawson," and "The Dream of a Lifetime," which puts an amusing time-travel spin on a number of the Life and Times chapters. If you haven't already read the complete "Last Sled to Dawson," however, you'll have to pick it up elsewhere, like in the Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck: Don Rosa Special or Uncle Scrooge #350. --David Horiuchi

    Book Description

You asked for them, and here they are... the pre-chapters, the post-chapters and the in-between chapters of Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck! Included in this companion are the stories "The Cowboy Captain of the Cutty Sark," "The Vigilante of Pizen Bluff," "The Prisoner of White Agony Creek," "Hearts of the Yukon" and "Sharpie of the Culebra Cut." Finally rounding out the collection are two slightly unusual takes on Scrooge's life: "Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies" and "Dream of a Lifetime" in which the Beagle Boys invade Scrooge's subconscious mind (!) and wreak havoc during dream-versions of the various "Life of Scrooge" chapters.

    5 out of 5 stars A suitable companion.......2007-06-29

This trade paperback collects the pre-, post-, and in-between chapters of gifted storyteller Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and it's excellent fun. Essentially Rosa uses every bit of Carl Barks-created Scrooge obscura to create a gripping adventure that is both entertaining and nuanced. All-ages material at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Actually quite good..........2007-06-02

Here Rosa presents stories hat did not fit into the original Scrooge Life and Times storyline. The stories here focus on the Yukon and Scrooges troubled relationship with Glittering Goldie. Again, Rosa departs from Barks and creates realistic three-dimensional characters, wtih real feelings and motivations. Some of these stories I cannot believe why they were not included in the original collection! Here, even Donald Duck gets an opportunity to show his (well-hidden) compassion and Scrooge finally finds redemption with Goldie. Magica de Spell is caught in a trap worthy of Barks himself.
Rosa prides himsalf with his historical accuracy, but I did find an error - Isaac Parker was the Hanging Judge, not Roy Bean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story from don rosa.......2007-04-04

Don Rosa made a wonderfull job, in the companion as in the main book "the Life and Times of scrooge McDuck", succeeding to bring a breathtaking story with really hilarious moments (how scrooge gained his first dime, and the story about how the boat dislocated and the piano went through the windows) ...

And most of call, considering the whole duck tales universe, it's canon !

    Worth reading !

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck confirmed Don Rosa's status as the heir apparent to the great Carl Barks as Disney's premiere comic storyteller. For this massive 12-part epic, originally printed in Uncle Scrooge 285-296 (April 1994 through February 1996), Rosa combed through Barks' stories for the many clues about what transformed Scrooge McDuck from a Scottish boy to the richest duck alive. Thus, Scrooge's comment that he fought in the "cattle wars of the old frontier" was turned into a story about the young Scrooge's cattle job in Montana. Rosa incorporates actual historical facts with known elements of the Scrooge mythology to spin an incredibly rich chronicle, full of tall tales, crazy gags, and high adventure. The 1995 Eisner winner for Best Serialized Story is even better in trade paperback format, in which Rosa offers his own memories of writing the story, "insane details to look for," and rare art. Want more of Rosa's Scrooge? The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion collects other stories about the life of Scrooge that weren't in the original series. --David Horiuchi

    Book Description

Don Rosa created this twelve-part story to delineate exactly how Scrooge McDuck acquired his fortune and became the World's Richest Duck. The story was originally serialized in the United States in Uncle Scrooge comics. Now it has been collected in one all-encompassing popularly-priced volume.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stories, Great Art!.......2007-08-08

If you've never read (or wanted to read) Uncle Scrooge stories, thinking they're just funny animal comics, take a look at this book. You'll be surprised. This is an epic. The detail Rosa puts into these stories and illustrations is incredible. I find myself going mad, staring at covers and splash pages, seeking out the cleverly hidden D.U.C.K.s. The stories are enhanced by Rosa's "director's notes" after each story. I've never read much Uncle Scrooge before, but I'm going to seek out as much Rosa (and Barks) as I can, now.

4 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.......2007-05-14

My kids love this book! I love this book! The only reason I give it a 4 star rating instead of a 5 is because the binding is terrible. I bought 2 of these books and after a few times of handling the book, the binding pops off the cover and individual pages start falling out. Very frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever can a Duck do for me?.......2007-02-04

I was fasinated by the way Don Rosa treated Carl Barks' story and yet put his own stamp on both the Duck, the clientele and history, even details of geografy like in Dawson. So it may be excused that Mississippi and Ohio are mixed a bit. All in all, if you care for Scrooge McDuck, the book is a must. If you do not care about him, be careful not to read it, you just might become a follower.

5 out of 5 stars best comic series EVER!.......2007-01-16

I've been savoring every panel of this book for last few months - afraid of finishing it too soon. I'm now about 4 pages from the end of the most fantastic story - the most intensely researched - the best drawn images in comic book history ... and I will absolutely read it again and again and again.

I already have a copy of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion (also by Dan Rosa) and can't wait to dive into it.

If you've never known why comics were great - get this.

If you've grown tired of the current spandex-heavy, story-lite mainstream comics - get this.

If you ever loved cartoons or Scrooge or Donald or a great story - or history or pretend history - get this!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Barks (Yes, I know that's blasphemy).......2006-09-12

Don Rosa has taken the Scrooge stories of Carl Barks and filled in all the blanks, both in story and in art. His background art is so detailed, and contains so many gags, that you have to read his stories many times to get it all.

This book is the biography of Scrooge McDuck, probably the most American comic book character ever created, even though he was born in Scotland. He is a capitalist through and through, but totally Horatio Alger. All he has he earned through his own efforts, by being "Tougher than the toughies and smarter than the smarties." Scrooge participated in every fortune-making opportunity of the late 19th century, from the South African diamond mines to the Klondike gold rush. And all these efforts are brilliantly captured in Rosa's books.

5 out of 5 stars An homage to Barks.......2000-09-07

I am writing this within just a few days of one of the saddest days any comic book fan could imagine. Carl Barks has just passed on to that great Duckburg in the sky. This book is, without a doubt, the definitive tribute to a man whose genius is just now being recognized by many.

As you read these outstanding adventure stories - and that's what they are - you will come to know the technique of how this extraordinary man transcended the comic art into the realm of high fiction. Each story is written on two levels, sprinkled with humor and illustrated in such a realistic, yet exaggerated manner that allows the reader to identify strongly with the characters.

My personal favorite is "The Second Richest Duck." In this story, Scrooge, Donald and "the boys" have their true personalities come out with a richness found only in the best writings of major adventure authors and is the equal, at least, to the best Indiana Jones or James Bond story.

I read these stories to my son as he was growing up and promised him the book for his future children. My daughters now each have their own families and the stories are now read by me to my grandchildren. Truly, this tome is part of our family heritage.

I own the hardcover, coffee table edition with a signed, numbered print by Barks. I shall never part with the print, and will hand it down to my son in my estate.

Thank you Carl, for many hours of delicious reading pleasure and the exercise of my imagination. If I could rate this book an infinite number of stars, I would.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Entertaining !!.......1999-07-12

This is a fantastic book, covering Scrooge McDuck's life from his days in the Klondike to space travel and flying saucers. The book contains many of my favorite stories including "The Second Richest Duck" and "Land of the Pygmy Indians". There is extensive written material about and by Carl Barks giving much insight into the man behind the duck. Finally, there is a checklist of the comics in which Uncle Scrooge appeared from 1952 to 1988. All in all, this book is a "must-have" for any serious fan of Uncle Scrooge.

5 out of 5 stars The Duckman at his Finest.......1998-08-15

One of the best collections of comic art ever published, this superlative volume not only takes eleven of Carl Barks' best book-length Scrooge adventures, adds an original story and includes his own comments on each, but Peter Ledger's recoloring makes these stories look better than they ever have or ever will. The only flaw with the volume is that it will send you into a frenzy to read more about Scrooge...but thankfully, Gladstone Comics has all the stories still in print. Simply superb.

5 out of 5 stars this is some good readin'. Mr. Barks is the best........1998-04-23

Carl Barks is a genious. He knows how to make an entertaining comic, unlike some of todays "hottest" comic book artists and writers. He has created, in my opinion, the greatest Disney character ever. Scrooge McDuck. Mr. McDucks adventures in this book take him from the Klondike, to the ocean in search of a box of horseradish, and many other places. Trust me. This stuff is good.

5 out of 5 stars Scrooge - the ultimate capitalist with a heart of gold.......2000-05-04

I have had this book since the early 1980s. I read the stories to my son, and now to my grandson. My son made me promise that the book would be his when he had children. That's how good it is.

If you are a "Scroogeophile" like I am, this is the definitive Barks work. Not only is it coffee table sized, but in its original form, it included a signed, numbered print by Barks.

The color reproduction is excellent, and the book includes the most famous Scrooge stories: Christmas on Bear Mountain (the 1st Scrooge story), the "Horseradish" story (considered by most fans to be the best, although it is not my personal favorite), Micro Ducks from Outer Space and my personal favorite, The World's Second Richest Duck, where Scrooge and the boys face off against Flintheart Glomgold (what a perfect name) in a contest to determine who is the world's richest duck.

The book contains insights into Barks' relationship with Disney and also has some never before released sketches and drawings. There is a short biography of Barks and lots of neat info about Scrooge (how he made his fortune, how he got his first "lucky" dime, etc.

If you ever wondered what it would be like to own a money bin measuring three cubic acres, then you must get this book. Even though it is out of print, check every rare bookstore you can find to locate a copy. Mine is priceless.

P.S. If anyone finds a copy in good condition of the "Junior Woodchucks Handbook", let me know :-)

Apart from the classic "Lving Flag" and "Tomato Butt", "The Tollefson Boy goes to College" and "Mrs Berge and the Schubert Carillon Piano" [with brilliant impersonations of the carillon piano] are strong, mixing acute observation of the humour, tedium and sadness of everyday life with just enough exaggeration to provide comic relief.

      Book Description

His horn-rimmed spectacles, straw boater, and trademark toothy grin immortalized in more than 200 movies, Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) will forever be an icon of American cinema. Known as "the third genius" of silent film comedy, he made more silent films than Chaplin and Keaton combined, and pioneered the popular "thrill" comedy genre—epitomized by the infamous image from Safety Last! in which he hangs precariously from the hands of a clock high above the streets of Los Angeles.

Published to coincide with the release of Lloyd's major works on video and DVD, this well-researched book is the first to have complete access to the photographs and papers of Lloyd's closely guarded archive, and features 225 duotone photographs, many never before published. Authors Vance and Lloyd (the actor's granddaughter) examine every aspect of the artist's creative output and process.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A loving tribute.......2006-09-13

This is a wonderful book loaded with beautiful pictures, both candids and stills (proof that black and white photography is just as visually arresting as color photography, if not more so), together with chapters about Harold's feature films, his early life, an interview he had with members of the AFI late in his life, Greenacres (the fairytale-like estate he built for his family), his relationship with his wife Mildred Davis, his later years, and the author's memories of Harold. Suzanne Lloyd was raised by her grandparents, so this was a real labor of love, one which produced a very classy book. Sometimes it seems like all celebrity bios, particularly ones written by close family members, are either total hack jobs or total sugarcoating, but this one shows honesty and evenhandedness. For example, Suzanne, in the chapter on her grandparents' romance and eventual marriage, mentions that even though they did have one of Hollywood's longest marriages, a marriage which is also considered one of Hollywood's happiest, Harold did cheat on Mildred and have affairs (such as with his leading lady Jobyna Ralston). This is rather shocking information, esp. because their marriage is often held up as one of the rare few happy ones from Hollywood, but Suzanne conveys this information in an evenhanded way instead of making excuses for it or demonising Harold. (Though honestly, by today's standards, Harold's extramarital exploits seem rather tame.) And this couldn't have been easy to do, considering she was talking about her beloved grandfather being unfaithful to her equally beloved grandmother. Throughout the book, she gives a balanced portrayal of her grandfather, and though he did have faults, like any normal human being, he still comes across as a really nice guy, a class act, a consummate professional, a truly talented comedian, someone who really cared about his fans, particularly from the younger generation, someone who did an awful lot of good things for child burn victims (and other children in general) in the hospitals run by his fraternal organisation the Shriners.

My only complaint about this book is that it wasn't long enough! I wanted to read even more about all of these great films and to see even more pictures. I also wished the filmograhy had listed which of these films are lost and which survive. Obviously all of Harold's silent and sound features are still with us, as are all of his three-reelers and many of his later two-reelers, but I would have liked to have seen a listing of which of his Glasses Character two-reelers are lost and which are extant, and particularly would have liked to have seen a listing of which of the 14 Lonesome Lukes are the ones still known to survive. Still, all told, this is a fabulous book, a great addition to either your coffeetable or your own personal library on the bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Coffee Table Fare..........2005-09-26

Harold Lloyd is often called "The Third Genius," though in his day he was as popular as either Keaton or Chaplin, and reportedly made more films than the two of them combined (a claim I've read, but which stretches creudulity, considering how few of them survive...). This big rich book, co-authored by Lloyd's granddaughter, is ripe with photos, and, while not precisely a biography, paints a warm and impressive portrait of this devoted artist and his work. I give it 4 stars only because its size means you won't be carrying it on the bus or even to bed-- it is definitely a living room book; one to show to friends. and enjoy over coffee.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific book about the life of a comic genius.......2003-11-29

Harold Lloyd: Master Comedian by Jeffret Vance and Suzanne Lloyd is a brand new fantastic book on the life of a master comedian and filmmaker. This is truly a great book and I urge you to buy it. If in the past you've only been familiar with the films of Chaplin and Keaton, please buy this book to find out how much Lloyd actually inspired Chaplin and Keaton's films. Harold Lloyd was not only a great actor, but he and his cameraman Walter Lundin created various great camera angles and innovations. Harold Lloyd's Masterpieces such as GRANDMA'S BOY (1922), SAFETY LAST! (1923), GIRL SHY (1924), THE FRESHMAN (1925), THE KID BROTHER (1927) and SPEEDY (1928) are just as spectacular today as the day they were filmed. Harold Lloyd's "talkie films" have known to be not so good however Harold did make 3 great films in the 30s called MOVIE CRAZY (1932), THE CAT'S PAW (1934), and THE MILKY WAY (1936). Harold Lloyd then drifted away from filmmaking to pursue other interests until the 60s when he re-released some of his films in to two compilation films and so forth.

Harold Lloyd will forever be my favourite cinema genius and go ahead and buy this book and hopefully his films will be released on DVD as soon as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Coffee Table Book.......2003-07-19

Jeffry Vance and Suzanne Lloyd (Harold's granddaughter) have put together a fascinating book on Harold Lloyd's films and life. Always considered one of the "big three" silent film comedians, it has been difficult to appreciate Lloyd because his films were rarely shown at revivals and on television. The release of this book and the showings of his films on TCM are starting a Harold Lloyd revival.

This book features many large, beautiful photographs from the Lloyd estate. Many of these photos have never been published before. Jeffry Vance has written incisive reviews of each of Harold's features. He details important events about the making of the films, and why they were successful (or not). He also includes some surprising details about Harold's and Mildred Davis Lloyd's private life. Suzanne Lloyd has included a chapter of her remembrances of Harold. Finally, a long interview is included that Harold gave to the AFI before his death.

If you are a fan of silent film comedies, you won't be able to put this book down.

If you like puzzles and lots of them, this is the book! There are (soon to be) four books in the series and I can hardly wait for the next once my husband and I have finished one. The style is witty and the puzzle makers are all names that I recognize from the New York Times crossword puzzles, so the quality is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars For experienced professionals or those who KNOW what they want to do.......2007-08-29

I purchased this book because I have no idea what it is I'd like to do with my life. I am only one year out of college and am working in a job I most certainly do not enjoy. I was hoping this book could give me some insight into what it is I would enjoy, but instead it focuses on how to change jobs later in life. I am not a Baby Boomer who has worked at the same company for 20 years and yearns for a change. So while this book may be helpful to people who have been in the work world longer, it did very little to help me find my passion.

          5 out of 5 stars I Don't Know What I Want But I Know It's Not This.......2007-05-13

This is a concisely written career book that doesn't waste your time and invites you in even for scary stuff like self-assessment. If you believe that 'real jobs' have not lived up to their promise, you should check out this book. Also, the author, Julie Jansen, is highly responsive to email questions and sincere about helping those of us seeking something more than a paycheck.

          4 out of 5 stars Realistic........2007-02-21

This book gets into the "meat and potatoes" of career development. I encourage anyone who is "lost" to read this and start doing what it takes to find a realistic, economically sound, and FUN job! They do exist...I found one.

5 out of 5 stars Find Yourself First.......2007-01-06

A book like this is as good as the reader. In order to find one self one must look inward and that takes a little work, maybe even more than a little. Julie Jansen's book is a great help in helping the reader start that search and she then guides the reader to the direction he or she must take. Does the book guarantee a new career? No, I don't think so but if the reader works at it, it can come.It probably will. Julie Jansen's Guide is as good as a book like this can get. It is then up to the reader to make use of it. That's the work part. I like the book very much. Anyone willing to work to impove their lives will like it too.

1 out of 5 stars This book was not helpful....at all........2006-12-31

This book was not what I thought at all. I thought it would help me figure out what line of work I would be best suited for. Instead, there were just random self exploration questions which didn't help me know if I would be better suited to be an accountant or zoologist.

If you would like specific employment/career "what would I really enjoy doing" answers, don't get this book.
