Book Description
In the years after the end of the First World War, large numbers of Africans and African Americans emigrated to the cities of Europe in search of work and improved social conditions. Their impact on white European society was immense. In Paris, where the artistic climate was particularly sensitive and experimental, avant-garde artists courted black personalities such as Josephine Baker, Henry Crowder, and Langston Hughes for their sense of style, vitality, and "otherness." Leger, Picasso, Brancusi, Man Ray, Giacometti, Sonia Delaunay, and others enthusiastically collected African sculptures and wore tribal jewelry and clothes. More importantly, they adopted black forms in their work, and their style soon influenced a larger audience anxious to be in vogue. A passion for black culture swept through Paris, and by the end of the 1920s, black forms that had provided the initial spark to the modernist vision had become the commercially successful Art Deco style. Negrophilia, from the French negrophilie--the contemporary term to describe the craze--examines this commingling of black and white cultures in jazz-age Paris. Painting, sculpture, photography, popular music, dance, theater, literature, journalism, furniture design, fashion, and advertising--all are scrutinized to show how black forms were appropriated, adapted, and popularized by white artists. The photographs, writings, and memorabilia of poet Guillaume Apollinaire, art collectors Paul Guillaume and Albert Barnes, shipping heiress and publisher Nancy Cunard, and Surrealists Michel Leiris and Georges Bataille help to recreate the contemporary atmosphere. The book raises questions about the avant-garde's motives, and suggests reasons and meaning for its interest. 115 b/w photographs and illustrations.

Book Description
Looking for guidance in understanding the ways and means of Southern culture? Look no further. Florence King's celebrated field guide to the land below the Mason-Dixon Line is now blissfully back in print, just in time for the Clinton era. The Failed Souther Lady's classic primer on Dixie manners captures such storied types as the Southern Woman (frigid, passionate, sweet, bitchy, and scatterbrained--all at the same time), the Self-Rejuvenating Virgin, and the Good Ole Boy in all his coats and stripes. (The Clinton questions-is he a G.O.B. or isn't he?--Miss king covers in her hilarious new Afterword.) No one has ever made more sharp, scathing, affectionate, real sense out of the land of the endless Civil War than Florence King in these razor-edged pages.
Customer Reviews:
Buy multiple copies -- you'll be giving them out!.......2007-07-30
Indispensable for both natives and transplants. Absolutely the best analysis of the Southern mindset that I have ever encountered -- I'm a native -- and a dangerously funny read to boot. Ms. King writes with a caustic wit wrapped in an ever-so-delicate velvet glove. I quote her insights often, and almost always end up having to get yet another copy to give to someone. The South really has its own flavor -- from Faulkner to Foxworthy -- and Florence King has it all neatly summed up. Everything I have read of hers so far is worthwhile.
The humor holds up well.......2007-02-19
Even after 30 odd years (yes, I really did read this back in the 1970s) this book remains very funny. It's also 'spot on' for the morals and manners of its time and place, but as a work of sociology or anthropology, some of its declarations and observations are more historical than immediate. I don't mean all of that deliciously eccentric Southernicity has vanished, but thanks to cable/satellite tv and the Internet, the "South" has become substantially more culturally homogeneous with the rest of America. And those quirks that remain have almost become national treasures. (For example, even in Ohio restaurants I'm now asked whether I want sweet tea or unsweetened. Ten years ago, there was no choice above the Mason-Dixon line: Iced tea came unsweetened and you had your choice of white, pink, or blue packaged additives.)This book captures a South not all that dear to sharecroppers or blue-collar TVA workers, but one close to the hearts of debutantes and daughters of the Confederacy. It's often hilarious reading, but don't expect this to be a complete and accurate social roadmap to the south of 2007.
The Quintessential Guide.......2004-08-27
Florence King defines the southern lady and gentleman, in each of their various incarnations, to a "tee" in this riotous book. The perfect gift for any yankee who's been transplanted and can't seem to figure out his neighbors. And a journey of self discovery for any southerner who appreciates a good laugh--and a little irony. Funny how little we have changed in the thirty years since it was first published.
Almost Five, But..........2004-03-16
It's interesting to go back and read some of Florence King's earlier works. This book is clearly from the beginning of her writing career: Her writing is not as sharp as it was in her column ("The Misanthrope's Corner"), and she occasionally tends to delve into long spells of almost too much information.
That said, "Southern Ladies and Gentlemen" was one of the funniest books I've ever read. As a Northerner (and infatuated with the South), this book is an insightful - and hilarious - glimpse into every-day Southern culture. After a couple trips to the South, and then reading this book, I can see where her descriptions come from - and how frighteningly (and laughably) accurate they are.
While this book is occasionally punctuated with the sexual remark (or "saucy outburst"), the point is still very much in the text: The South has a very regimented set of codes for its citizens to follow. Women, all at once, have to be scatterbrained and pert, "saucy" and chaste...This balancing act, of course, is written about numerous times throughout the book.
This is an introduction to the South, letting the reader get a sneak-peek behind the scenes, so to speak, of the social, sexual, and political culture. As is King's way, it is full of sarcasm, wit, and hilarity: She does an excellent job of entertaining the reader.
Florence King is the best!.......2004-01-16
I was first given this book when I had just moved to NYC from Georgia. My first time leaving the South. My Mississippi-born singing coach loaned me this book, since I was feeling homesick. I laughed out loud so much while reading this on the New York subway that people backed away from me! I managed to scare New Yorkers!! (even if they don't understand that Southern freeze look) It is still hystercially funny after a dozen years of reading it.Buy every one of Florence King's books. They are all wonderfully funny and frighteningly accurate about far too many of my own relatives!
Product Description
Humorous essays about Southern men and women by a Southern journalist who pulls no punches. Part of a wave of books about Southern culture that emerged with the Presidential candidacy of Jimmy Carter in 1976, this book's wraps featured a blonde wrapped in a Confederate flag next to a table holding a mint julep. Lively, funny look at Southern women, good ol' boys, and others.

A great effort.......2007-09-22
Even if the published editorial and customer reviews already dispense all essential appreciation about this book, I add my one to support by rating the excellent effort of Robert Davenport. As he points out in the preface, it is the war films, rather then the actual film, that define our perceptions of this facet of our history". Being so, war movies contribute to ponder about the use of collective violence to solve collective conflicts. A special mention" deserves the author's effort to point out differences between the story and history.
The focus of this volume is on the wars of the 20th century. Hopefully the author will edit also the companion volume about movies of wars before 1900.
Excellent source and enjoyable reading.......2004-08-31
Since I am a fan of military films and war movies, I grabbed this book right away. I was pleased to see that the author included many details of each film in addition to production notes and trivia on many of them as well. As a film collector, this book will be a great resource for researching military films and their history. It will be appreciated by anyone who has served in the military as well as film students or film enthusiasts.

Book Description
Although American women have written many of our most memorable popular songs, their contributions have received little recognition. The first biographical dictionary devoted to American women songwriters, this work profiles 181 well-known and little-known women who have written popular and motion picture songs, musicals, country, blues, jazz, folk, gospel, and hymns. Many African-American and contemporary songwriter/performers such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey are included. This volume provides hard-to-find biographical and career information across the broad spectrum of indigenous American popular song. A history of women's contribution to the creation of American popular song emerges through these profiles. Grattan takes pains to profile the famous, the unsung, and those who persevered through sheer tenacity and against all odds. The dictionary is divided into ten music categories and profiles are alphabetically arranged within each category. An introduction to each chapter gives an historical overview of women's contributions to that form of music. Each profile consists of an up-to-date biographical essay on private life, career as both songwriter and, in many cases, performer, most famous songs, and sources of further information. Entries are cross-referenced. Lyrics from a number of the best-known songs by women songwriters are included. A bibliography and song index will aid the researcher.

Book Description
This first-of-its-kind collection vibrates with the high-voltage energy of today's most exciting female singer-songwriters as they speak out, look inside, and reveal their lives.
Sarah McLachlan:
"When I sang and played I'd get completely lost in what I was doing. During that time, I was no longer this stupid, useless little ten-year-old who didn't have any friends. I was someplace else, where none of that could touch me."
Jewel:
"Fame exists in other people's minds. I can't experience my own fame at all but I experience it in other people's eyes when I look at them and see that they're scared."
Shawn Colvin:
"Giving up addiction was the springboard into adult thinking. I realized that everything was a choice. The world was an open book. Nothing was the same after that."
Sheryl Crow:
"I always pictured myself as a loner off living like a Jack Kerouac character or, worse, someone out of a Charles Bukowski book, one of those down-and-outers who works at a gas station and has no one and no family."
Lucinda Williams:
"I don't want to offend anyone, but I like to push people's buttons. While I want to appeal to people in all walks of life, I also want to get a response, make them think."
Customer Reviews:
Yay!.......2000-12-24
I learned so much about all of my favorite artists in this book. This book is tastefull done (unlike Building a Mystery by Judith Fitzgerald). The author actually talked to the artist and got their perspectives on many different topics and the meanings behind their songs, which makes this book true and somewhat autobiographical. It is good to see a book also where the artists are not portrayed as glamorous. These black and white photos seem the bring the artists back down to the same level that the reader is working on. It is a really nice book and an interesting read.
Solo.......1999-12-27
com) from Atlanta, Georgia November 14, 1998 Dear Emma and Marc, Solo is awesome, the images and narrative are both soulful and powerful. As a practicing artist I'm attracted to the imagery in your book. The photographs have a cinematic quality to them, in particular the series of photo's of Holly Palmer. When I look at the images in your book I feel spirit and emotion of the people represented through your imagery. Examples of what I'm referring to are images of Lucinda Williams (pg 290 and 300), Sheryl Crow (pg 273), Roseanne Cash (pg 246), Jewel (pg 224), Shawn Colvin (pg 39), and Sarah (pg 18)... I like the way the narrative and art work weave together like a quilt, your images make me feel good. More on Solo later... Peace, Love, and Understanding, Freddy Ciminelli
A Lilith Fair Bible!.......1999-05-04
This is the finest example of what beautiful photography and amazing storise can do for your soul. This book should be read by every woman in America at every age. The stories are personal, enlightening and truly amazing! There is so much to learn from SOLO... I return to it daily.
50% truth is.................1999-05-02
Well, I am going to read the book, if I ever get a credit-card...which hopefully there's another option..( or I'll be broke before I get paid....) Anyhow, I'm sure this book is well worth reading..TO me anything by any of these great artist(s) who have inspired me in my darkest hours of frustration.. I will never give up the God given gift(s) thanks to you all!!!! (And hopefully we'll all Jam before New Year's Eve!!!!!) -C
Thank you Emma and Mark.......1999-04-06
The night I bought this book I sat down and finished the whole thing. I bought this book because I was a huge fan of Sarah McLachlan and Shawn Colvin, Jewel and Cheryl Crow, but I learned so much more from the other singers too. Sarah's interview struck me as the most down to earth, but every interview was intriguing and I just couldn't put it down. Some of the artists I had never even listened to like Ani Difranco but then next day I borrowed a friends CD and I have to say thanks to this book my CD collection has gotten a lot larger! Thank you Emma and Mark! The only bad thing about this book is......it ended! (and Tori Amos wasn't in the book, but was mentioned by Sarah McLachlan! =)So that was fine by me!!!)

This game has much better illustrations and easy-to-follow explanations of how to actually play the games than the other children's books I have used with my scout troop.

Because finding the ideal person for every workplace position has become an increasingly difficult task, the retention of top employees has become every manager's concern. Love 'Em or Lose 'Em, by organizational-development specialists Beverly L. Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans, proposes that this "race for talent" can be effectively run only by those who adopt programs and policies that truly support their personnel. It then shows how to do so, even in organizations reluctant to participate actively.
Kaye and Jordan-Evans encourage an initial scan of their 26 alphabetically arranged chapters--such as "Information: Share It," "Mentor: Be One," and "Space: Give It"--so attention can be fully focused on the most relevant benefits and responsibilities associated with employee retention. All are bolstered with hands-on exercises and stories of others' failures and successes. The section on family-friendly conduct, for example, suggests uncovering specifics by directly asking employees what would make their lives easier. Resultant needs can be met, it continues, by allowing staffers to bring children to the office on occasion, assisting anyone who must line up care for an aging parent, giving weekday comp time to those who travel on weekends, etc. It also explains how Deloitte & Touche and DuPont addressed these issues. Any manager who dreads losing a top performer would do well to consider this book. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
With replacement costs high and start-up time critical, employee retention is more valuable than ever. This best-selling guide provides 26 strategies to keep talented employees happy and productive. Citing research and experience with dozens of organizations, the authors present many examples of how today's companies have applied their retention strategies and increased their retention rates. The chapters are arranged alphabetically, from "Ask" to "Zenith." Each chapter includes a series of to-do lists, company examples, and an "alas" story drawn from the authors' personal experiences. This edition features new tips and to-do lists, new stories, and additional research from the media and from the authors' own extensive database. There are also three new appendices: a troubleshooting guide, a guide to saying "thank you" in the workplace, and a reading group guide.
Customer Reviews:
Straight Forward and Memorable.......2007-03-11
The format of this book is excellent. It is driven by the alphabet and not only has the basic idea for each area but also details real life stories that relate to each topic. None of the stories were unfamiliar and was a good/bad thing because I found we were horribly ordinary in our experience and at the same time that was comforting to know. Great tools, easy to employ, presented in an easy to read and "get" format. A must for managers, business leaders, et al.
Lots to Learn Here.......2006-11-08
Wish one of my former bosses had read this book! After a couple of us had finished a nearly impossible project, someone suggested (in front of us) that he thank us personally. His reply: "We're all adults. We don't need to be thanked for doing our jobs." It wasn't the last straw, but it was one more thing that just added up. I eventually left the company.
The first couple of chapters are the most valuable. The book is important for corporations, but has even more significance for nonprofit or volunteer organizations where pay might be small or nonexistent, so appreciation or working for a cause is why people stick around.
You don't need to read it from start to finish - just the first chapters and then whichever of the concepts for appreciating employees strikes your fancy (or your employees'). It's clear and a breeze to read.
An A-Z primer on keeping the best employees.......2006-04-19
Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans' LOVE 'EM OR LOSE 'EM: GETTING GOOD PEOPLE TO STAY pairs actor and teacher David Drummond's dramatic voice work with the account of how to keep the best employees in an A-Z guide employers can use to address employee concerns. Learn how these strategies work in actual business environments in a guide packed with real-world examples.
"Talent development DNA for every manager!".......2005-11-04
Just completed "Love 'Em or Lose 'Em" by Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans. It is a fast read......two days on the bus riding into Downtown Houston. A little 90 minutes of time for so many insights, and practical programming ideas for trainers and talent managers!
1. For trainers and mentors- Build a facilitated discussion (or board games, card games, pair work activities, posters) around these questions (p. 109):
What have I learned about what counts in this organization?
How have my failures and success grown me?
What most surprised me about the culture?
What was the most difficult culture shift for me to make?
What are they ways to get in really hot water here/
How do people derail themselves?
What do I know now that I wish I had known then?
2. For us all- Are we boxed in? (p. 138)
But a box can have 4 different walls!
Concrete- Cannot be broken, pushed, bent or shattered.
Glass- - Hit it at the right time, with the right instrument, it breaks.
Rubber- Push hard and it bends.
Vapor- Our assumptions and perceptions about the rules: "People will never fly!"
This book is full of "self insight" activities and questions..... for new and experienced managers who know that they must do the max to attract and retain their most important asset- people.
Valuable encouragement and advice for all working people.......2005-10-03
Any book that encourages people to treat each other as such is very valuable. In an age where people are frequently victims of globalization and corporate greed, it is important to remember the talent and the true contribution of the talented people that create the value of the American company.
