                        Book Description

In letters to stars, dignitaries, and chairmen of the country's most powerful organizations, Don Novello's alter ego Lazlo Toth pestered his victims for photographs, offered outlandish advice, fired off strange inquiries, and more. The strangest part? Practically everyone answered, leaving Toth with a hilarious collection of outlandish correspondence unmatched in the history of American letters.

The Lazlo Letters contains nearly 100 notes to public figures, including then-President Nixon, Vice President Ford ("I've been Vice President of a lot of organizations myself, so I know how you feel."), Bebe Rebozo, Lester Maddox, Earl Butz, and America's top business leaders. The replies, says the author, "classic examples of American politeness."

In an on-going correspondence with the White House, Toth suggests everything from ridiculously corny jokes for the President to use, to a campaign song sung to the tune of "Tea for Two." He asks the president of a bubble bath company just how to use the product, as the packaging instructions specifically state to "keep dry."

"No matter how absurd my letter was, no matter how much I ranted and raved, they always answered," reports the author. "Many of these replies are beautiful examples of pure public relations nonsense." One is not: columnist James Kilpatrick has a lone sentiment for Toth-"Nuts to You!" 247,000 copies in print.

It's enough to say that this is the cleverest and funniest book that I have ever read. Trust me, I am old, and have read thousands of books in my lifetime. This one ranks very high in the top 10.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2006-03-09

An amazing collection of practical jokes on some of the world's most famous people and corporations. A lot of fun for someone who's aware of current events during this time period, and who likes to look back at them with a sense of humor. I bought this for a friend of mine who's a history buff, after reading another copy that had made its way around my extended family.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good.......2004-12-11

I had read Letters from a Nut by Ted Nancy and was made aware of the original Lazlo letters. Having read the book, I was, of course, entertained.

We see the world through the eyes of Lazlo Toth, American Hero. A man who berates the Hershey Corporation upon receiving a deformed M&M. A man who "congradulates" Richard Nixon repeatedly for taking on all those "Commie newsmen." A man who writes new lyrics to The Lady is a Tramp and submits his version, The Lady is a Queen, to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

Having read Nancy's book first, I must say that I found that book to have more entertainment (the idea of a bus passenger dressed as a giant stick of butter still continues to amuse me) than Toth's "Fight! Fight! Fight!" But you can't knock an original, and all will enjoy Lazlo's letters and his courteous replies from those who can't decide whether or not Lazlo is for real!

Novello's "From Bush to Bush" goes from funny to hysterical. It's probably one of the most outragious collaborations of political humor i've ever had the pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars It was the first of it's kind and still the funniest........2002-11-03

This was one of the first prank letter books ever published. Several books have tried to follow the originality of Lazlo Letters but pretty much fail, with two exceptions: Letters From a Nut - by Ted Nancy (possibly Jerry Seinfeld) and Hire Me Dumbass by Joe Mozian. Own all three and you have the best of this hilariously underrated genre. But Lazlo Letters especially is a must have.

The passionate correspondence of a proud (if concerned) American!

From the reign of Bush the First through the hilarious Clinton Years and to the restoration of the Bush Dynasty with Dubya, one lone crusader, Lazlo Toth, has been at work dispensing advice, offering ideas, and launching investigations on your behalf. Now this important effort has been collected and presented for instruction to the ages.

5 out of 5 stars My Kind of Crazy.......2006-02-17

As a fan of Don Novello's earlier works, I was concerned that perhaps, this book wasn't going to be as funny as the older books. But, I'm happy to report that Don Novello is as "bent" as he ever was! Over the years, these books have inspired me to write a few memorable letters of my own and I think I might start writing them again. These books are best when read aloud and shared with friends. You'll laugh til you cry!

4 out of 5 stars Lazlo Toth for Poet Laureate.......2004-01-21

Lazlo Toth is back with more of his hilarious letters. This is his third book of letters to corporations, politicians, religious leaders and anyone else he feels like writing to. Lazlo is a funny as ever, but the responses he receives aren't as funny as in his other books. Most of the time, he just receives a form letter, if they bother to write back at all. Still, a very funny book, if you share Don Novello's absurd sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Give the gift of laughter by giving someone this book!.......2003-12-10

I had the pleasure of meeting Don Novello at a book signing. He is such a sincere and intelligent person-- one of America's best wits.

Sadly, he said that this is his last "Lazlo Toth" book.

I almost described this book here as being "remorselessly" funny. But that would be incorrect. Don Novello's humor lacks any nuance of cruelty-- his is a quirky, kind humor. Biting, yes! But humane.

                        An abbreviated example:

England's Queen Mother, he notes in one letter, may be burdened by titles supreme and inconsequential-- but probably will never be bestowed the title of "designated driver".

5 out of 5 stars From Bush To Bush: The Lazlo Tooth Letters.......2003-10-22

                        HILARIOUS AND EDUCATIONAL!

In reading Don Novello's wonderful and funny book "Bush to Bush" "The Lazlo Tooth Letters" I couldn't stop laughing. But on a serious note, I would like to know if it's true that there's a venomous poison Lurking Monk fish,or the Lurking Monk Fish of Mazatlan. Like a chameleon it has the ability to change colors, and it's biggest trick is turning blue and disguising itself as water. it may be true ... but since Lazlo Tooth wrote it I doubted it, therefore,I have written to an authority on "Dangerous Marine Animals of the world" I am waiting for a reply. I have read all Don Novello's books and look forward to him writing many more in the future. It is enjoyable disgussing his books with my friends who enjoy his books as well. I suggest his books make great gifts for any occasion for young and old alike

HAIL, CITIZEN LAZLO! The history books say that Richard Nixon resigned because of a bungled break-in at the Watergate Hotel, but that isn't so: Tricky Dick had to change addresses to escape the rabid admiration of Lazlo Toth, one of the most authentic lunatics in the history of American letters. That's "letters" as in literature, because Toth is firmly fictional--but also "letters" in the literal sense, too. The flood of correspondence (complete with songs) that drove Nixon from office has been immortalized in Citzen Lazlo, a very strange and very funny book. Nixon wasn't the only target for Toth, a comic creation of Don Novello, himself better known as Saturday Night Live's Father Guido Sarducci. In a prose style all his own--"To President Ford (the best!) ..."--Novello's equal-opportunity annoyance pecked out effusive missives to huge corporations (McDonald's), kitschy pop stars (Sammy Davis Jr.), and the occasional Third World strongman. Quoth Citizen Lazlo to Spain's Francisco Franco: "You are not just a general--you are truly a Generalissimo! Keep it up!"

                        Book Description

Lazlo writes again! Reprising the inspired lunacy that made his first volume of letters a New York Times bestseller, comedian Don Novello slips back into his all-American alter ego, Lazlo Toth, and provides a new round of correspondence with politicians, celebrities, and royalty.

It's a quirky cultural history, social satire with a twist. Here are letters of congratulation-to newly elected Ronald Reagan ("This is my dream come true!") and letters of outrage-to Pepsi ("Take the Madonna commercial off the air!"). Letters filled with fresh ideas-proposing to Swanson a "Fit for a President Microwave Dinner" series, including the Jimmy Carter Camp David Accord Style Fried Chicken and Grits. And letters of advice-how Coca-Cola should handle the "pubic hair in the can of Coke" reference during the Thomas hearings.

And the best part: the replies.

CITIZEN LAZLO! Over 100 new letters. We missed you. 61,000 copies in print.

2 out of 5 stars Tepid collection of juvenile pranks.......2005-09-17

Lazlo Toth - Nixon-loving, airline-food-hating, Imelda-lusting, Russian-Federation-anthem-writing local nut and obsessive complainer - is back for another go at the politicians and corporations, Having talked up the first Lazlo book to my sons, I was anxious to share Don Novello's delightful humor with them. So I picked up the Volume 2 and opened it and random and read aloud the first couple of letters I came upon. They landed with a thud. Went over like a lead balloon. Or a fart in a funeral parlor.

Like the original, this volume consists of a series of chatty, off-kilter letters to famous people and organizations, with the purpose of soliciting unintentionally comical responses. To work, the letters must skate the fine edge between plausibility and absurdity. Sadly, Novello misses the edge nearly every time. Neither does he give an interesting or consistent personality to his fictitious writer, Lazlo Toth. Or appear to have any purpose other than to ridicule his targets. He doesn't reach for satire, or for social commentary beyond the rather pedantic realization that many famous public figures respond to most mail with stuffy form letters.

Maybe I'm getting old. More likely, Novello lost the ability to summon up the anarchic fun that made his first book so funny. Not to mention, some of his targets are onto him! When you get knowing responses from George H.W. Bush's secretary and from (yikes!) Ronald MacDonald --AND YOU PUBLISH THEM!! - something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

For the religiously sensitive (now *there's* something I wasn't when I first read Toth!) the book can be sacrilegious. Novello named his hero for the insane person who defaced Michelangelo's `Pieta' back in the 70s. As if that's not insensitive enough, Toth writes to the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of the Saints to report a phony miracle (something involving chewing gum) through the intercession of California's St. Junipero Serra. This results in a couple of rounds of responses with the cardinal from the Congregation, but goes no further. Had Novello developed Toth's fictitious "St. Junipero Serra Prayer Group" a little more, the accumulated bemused responses might have been slightly humorous. As it is, his miracle correspondence is one of a collection of tossed-off jokes.

The funniest exchanges (and there are a few) provoke shocked responses from the recipients. For instance, Toth's insistence on repopulating the war-depleted Kuwait Zoo with American squirrels and raccoons gets a panicky response from the organization actually involved. And it is surprising how many rather large organizations (GM and Anheiser-Busch) actually seem to read at least some letters and respond to them individually. Most of Toth's letters, though, are just pranks - bearding the lion in its own den.

I wanted to give the book a 2, but for some reason felt the urge to finish it. Maybe I was hoping that the humor would all come together by the end. Alas, it did not. But to give it a 3 implies that it is worth another read. And that, dear reader, is something I cannot imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Move Over, Father Guido!.......2002-06-12

Now that we have imitation Lazlo Toth's - even the Jerkey Boys are derivative, aren't they! - let's not forget that the same guy who puts on the big hat and sunglasses can be someone else when he wants to be.

I just wish he would have lunch with me at Sushi-To-Die-For?

                        Are you game?

4 out of 5 stars LIke most sequels, it's not a potent as the original.......2000-05-09

As interesting as it is to see Novello expand upon his letter writing, there's something disappointing about this second volume. Perhaps it's the introductio of Lazlo into a world in which he's already known. The responses from correspondents who already "get the joke" make one feel as though they're peeking behind the Wizard's curtain.

Still, given the pungence of the concept and the quality of Novello's writing, this couldn't help but be another good read. It just couldn't possibly live up to the original volume.

5 out of 5 stars As funny (for different reasons) as 'The Lazlo Letters'.......2000-04-05

The original book ('The Lazlo Letters') was set in the mid-70s and was essentially a tremedously funny, well-executed goof on Watergate and its participants. 'Citizen Lazlo' is wider in its timeframe (1977 - 1992) and focus (all over the map).

For flat out hilarity, nothing can beat (as mentioned by an earlier reviewer) the "Fit For a President Microwave TV Dinner" idea that 'Toth' pitches to the Campbell Soup Company. [Sample: Nixon-Mao Frozen Chinese Banquet...eat the meal that ended 23 years of hostility.]

My favorite has got to be his pitch to Kinney Shoes for a new advertising campaign based on "The Wind Beneath My Wings," entitled "The Feet Within My Shoes":

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?

Tho' you're the farthest parts of me

I can run faster than a beagle

You are the feet beneath my knees

The cadence of these letters continues the unique, hilarious style perfected by Novello/Toth in his first book. Check out a sample greeting to Nicolae Ceausescu in 1988: "Belated Happy Birthday! Stand up! You deserve it!"

                        Truly laugh-out-loud funny stuff.

One note of interest: since this is the second volume, some of the respondents are in on the joke. Those that are respond with a matching level of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, funny stuff.......1999-05-09

I hadn't looked at my copy of the book for a couple of years, and happened to find it in the bookshelf in the garage while getting ready for a garage sale. While I sat watching people turn their noses up at my junk, I laughed myself silly at Lazlo's amazing letters. His suggestions for "Historical" TV Dinners (Jimmy Carter's Camp David Accord Chicken and Grits) finally led Swansons (aka Campbell Soups) to just ignore him -- rather than send him more coupons for soup. It's a great look into the inner working of the Public Relations departments of large corporations and governments. Whenever you're throwing a garage sale, this book is a must read. Any other time, too.

One of the first books I got that turned me on to Marilyn was Andre De Dienes' Marilyn Mon Amour, and as such, is the best book I've ever bought on her.

The photos are in black-and-white, which adds to the charm. de Dienes' work proves that the world didn't need colour photos to show that warm, blossoming, peach-like skin to its full effect. No, b-and-w was good enough to bring out that inner beauty.

This book more than any other convinced me that Norma Jeane was prettier than Marilyn. Oh yes, I was enthralled by the golden goddess who took the world by storm beginning in 1953, but it's that pretty brunette who charms me more. The shots at the beach, where she's wearing the sweater and playing with the volleyball, are my favorites. The shots of her in the Death Valley also exemplify her prettier self. And she does look sweet and girlish in pigtails, during her first photo shoot.

Of the blonde shots, it'd probably have to be the 1949 beach shots. Her hair was long then, and she looks like she's really enjoying herself. And of any later stuff, the shot of her eating breakfast.

The last few photos mirror the despair she felt towards the end of her life. The frightened little girl, surrounded by darkness, is clearly seen.

I've heard the saying that the camera is a mirror to the soul. In the case of this photo collection, I am in full concurrence. However, the camera needs an operator, someone to focus that mirror, and Andre de Dienes was the right person for that focus.

                                  Book Description

Fashion photographer Andre de Dienes's life was changed forever one day in 1945 when he met a lovely young aspiring model named Norma Jean Dougherty. He instantly fell in love with her innocence and charm and the two were briefly engaged. They took many adventurous road trips together in those early years, de Dienes shooting Norma Jean in every possible natural setting in his original, inspired style. He soon built up a huge portfolio of stunning photographs of the smiling brunette which helped to launch her model career and, a few years later, a film career that was to make her a legend.

His entire relationship with the star, including many private moments shared only between the two, is detailed in de Dienes's secret memoirs, which were discovered when Monroe fans ravaged his home after his death in 1988. Never before published, the memoirs tell a beautiful story of love and friendship from the point of view of someone who knew Marilyn intimately; describing the transformation from Norma Jean to Marilyn Monroe— the evolution of a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled megastar— from an inside perspective, they shed light on a little-known side of Marilyn.

From their trip to see Norma Jean's mother in a mental hospital to Marilyn's visit to his home a few days before her death, de Dienes recounts all of the emotional moments they shared. The combination of de Dienes's memoirs and an extensive selection of his Monroe photographs (which numbered in the thousands) makes for an unprecedented, personal exploration into the psychology, history, and iconography of the world's favorite movie star.

                                      Book Description

A most rare and unbelievable treasure

After sitting in storage since his death in 1985, André de Dienes's complete Marilyn archives have finally been gathered together for this exclusive publication!

Photographer André de Dienes's life was changed forever one day in 1945 when he met an aspiring young model named Norma Jeane Baker. They immediately took off on the road together so that André could photograph her in natural settings across the West; during their travels, they fell in love and were briefly engaged. After their romance ended, they remained friends and de Dienes continued to photograph her. His unique, loving photographs of Norma Jeane helped to launch her model career and, a few years later, the film career that was to make her a legend. His entire relationship with the star, including many private moments never before revealed, is detailed in de Dienes's memoirs, which were written shortly before his death in 1985. Recently uncovered and published here for the first time, these unknown memoirs tell a bittersweet story of love and friendship, tracing the evolution of a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled megastar. From their trip to see Norma Jeane's mother in an Oregon mental hospital to Marilyn's visit to his home the year before her death, de Dienes recounts all of the emotional moments they shared. This special edition, combining de Dienes's memoirs and photographs, is at once a touching autobiography and an exclusive personal exploration into the psychology, history, and iconography of Marilyn Monroe.

Worldwide limited edition of 20,000 individually numbered copies

Tucked into the enlarged facsimile of de Dienes's Kodak film box are:

an extra-large format, 240-page hardcover book featuring a vast selection of sumptuous photographs and excerpts from de Dienes's memoirs, printed on 150g matte stock

a 608 page softcover facsimile of de Dienes's complete Marilyn memoirs and his Marilyn composite book (which includes the complete set of nearly 1000 Marilyn photos in contactsized prints)

a brochure containing all 24 of Marilyn's magazine covers shot by de Dienes

With some notable exceptions, the vast majority of these images-especially those in color-have never been seen before!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, sumptuous package.......2003-07-15

When I opened this box on Christmas morning, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. A recent convert to Marilyn-ism, this was one of the first books about her I owned, and I'm so glad, because I think it's important to know Norma Jeane before you know Marilyn. These huge, glorious photographs taken by Andre de Dienes capture her innocence and natural beauty at a time when she was an unknown model. De Dienes' memoirs are touching and reveal Norma Jeane as she was to him, a man who fell in love with her, as so many would in the future. After paging through these books, you are left to feel as though Norma Jeane Dougherty would never look quite as beautiful again (and of course she would, but not in the same way). Revealing Marilyn Monroe at her earliest beginnings, this limited edition package is definitely worth the money.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Marilyn boxed........2003-05-06

I've got copy 4066 of this sumptuous (and reassuringly?) expensive package and I thought this review should really detail what you'll get for your money.

ONE: An oversize Kodak color film box, nineteen inches high by sixteen wide and three deep, this is a big facsimile of the box that De Dienes kept some of his Marilyn prints in. The package weighs twelve pounds and will hardly fit any bookcase. The inside has recesses for the two books and one booklet. Black silk tape allows for easy access of the contents.

TWO: A large, beautifully designed and printed, 240 page book of Marilyn photos printed on thick paper. Although the printing screen is not the highest (150 dpi) the photos leap off the page, especially the full-page color ones. Many of these photos seem to be very private shots of Marilyn that De Dienes took during her career (a few show her with other people, a hairdresser and bookseller). Several at the back of the book show Marilyn's face montaged into clouds or surrounded by celestial bodies. Between the photos, printed in silver ink and in a large typewriter font, there are excepts from De Dienes memoirs. Also printed in silver are smaller photos with his hand-written captions.

THREE: A booklet with twenty-four, one to a page, magazine covers featuring De Dienes photos of Marilyn. Seventeen of them are European titles. Predictably, great photos are weakened by logos, cover lines and generally poor cropping. I thought this booklet was rather disappointing in its production.

FOUR: The 608 page facsimile of De Dienes manuscript and composite book. I think this is the most fascinating item in the box because of the production problems. The original pages were typed on one side of a sheet of ordinary paper and this facsimile is on similar weight stock so that the back of each page has some text showing through, as the original (There is a production problem here though, the paper rightly has text show-through but the photos do as well, on the original paper only the white back of the photo would have been visible). Although the manuscript was in black and white it has been printed in four colors to create the aged paper look and the few handwritten numbers in green and red that De Dienes wrote on the photos. You can see all of his corrections and deletions to the manuscript and read the comments he wrote about the various contact prints of Marilyn and other printed ephemera he stuck on back of each page.

The original composite section has a hundred pages (it becomes two-hundred pages in this facsimile) of cut-out contact prints which De Dienes stuck on the typewriter paper, again they are reproduced in four-color black because of the occasional handwritten colored numbers, even the image of the punched file holes on each page is reproduced. Hundreds of these contacts show how he photographed Marilyn and you can see how dozens of shots were taken of which only one or two were probably published. Most of these images have never been seen before and certainly never in the form that they are presented here.

Overall I think the Marilyn Box is an amazing production package. A world famous visual icon is presented in a unique way.

A truly wonderful pictorial memory of Marilyns early modelling years. The photos capture the emotion that exsisted between Marilyn and Andres and are uniquely presented in the large book. The box containing the books is truly one of a kind making the entire publication very special and authentic.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A book for a sturdy coffee table.......2002-10-22

For the Marilyn fan, this is a great book. The photographs reproduced in the large book are magnificent. The large book is difficult to read with silver ink on white paper, but it is cleaned up excerpts from the smaller facsimile typed recollections of De Dienes. It is heavy, thus a sturdy coffee table is required.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT AN AMAZING BOOK!.......2002-10-08

If your looking for just another book of monsters to bamboozle your players then you will be doing this book an inservice. Designed to be used with Iron Heroes, the Iron Heroes Bestiary is a valuable guide for incorporating monstrous foes into your Iron Heroes campaign.

While the bulk of the book details 34 monsters, its benefits don't end there.

Chapter 1 provides you with information on how to select monsters in the magic poor setting of Iron Heroes, weighing up special attacks, normal attacks, sustainability and other factors when judging when a monster from other sources would make a good challenge.

Chapter 2 includes three villian classes. Villians classes were first introduced in Mastering Iron Heroes and are essntially like a character class but allow you to make an opponent (be it creature or NPC) with any CR required. Rather handy if you find making leveled NPCs rather tedious.

Chapter 3 has all the monsters. Now while some contain information specific to the Sword Lands setting introduced in the Iron Heroes book, it would not take much to incorporate them into other settings, something which I intend to. As a bonus some of the monsters even have call-outs delineating adventure ideas that may be useful.

The Appendix has some final notes on converting monsters from other monster books as well as a chart of all the monsters and which book they can be found in released by Malhavoc Press. Handy if you follow everything that Malhavoc puts out, but as I don't I thought it a bit if a waste.

All-in-all, if you have purchased Iron Heroes I believe that it is thoroughly worthwhile getting this book as well.

                                                      Book Description

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

A great checklist and lots of advice for anyone thinking of starting a company.

Nothing revolutionary, perhaps nothing you wouldn't have thought of yourself, but there is great value in having a well thought-out, complete, list like this.

Only 4 stars because the book seems biased towards venture-funded companies.

Written like he was delivering a speech, Guy Kawasaki has made this an enjoyable and interesting read. All the time I was turning the pages, I kept feeling that much of what he wrote applied to life, and not just starting a business. When I got to the final chapter, "The Art of Being a Mensch", I discovered why I had gotten that feeling - much of Kawasaki's business approach emanates from his way of being in life. Read it for thoughts on how to live; read it for its humor, read it for advice - but do read it! Dennis DeWilde, Author of The Performance Connection.

The Art of the Start is a great book because it gives a comprehensive overview to starting a business. I recommend it to all my early stage and start up clients. It has a strong focus on raising venture money, which is often critical for a start up. I supplement the recommendation with my own book, Lies Start Ups Tell Themselves to Avoid Marketing which picks-up on the marketing overview that Kawaski provides and delivers in-depth, step-by-step details on implementing your marketing. Because, as every failed start up knows, once you have the money, you have to produce.
