    Book Description

How to imagine not only a new art or architecture but a new self or subject equal to them? In Prosthetic Gods, Hal Foster explores this question through the works and writings of such key modernists as Gauguin and Picasso, F. T. Marinetti and Wyndham Lewis, Adolf Loos and Max Ernst. These diverse figures were all fascinated by fictions of origin, either primordial and tribal or futuristic and technological. In this way, Foster argues, two forms came to dominate modernist art above all others: the primitive and the machine.

Foster begins with the primitivist fantasies of Gauguin and Picasso, which he examines through the Freudian lens of the primal scene. He then turns to the purist obsessions of the Viennese architect Loos, who abhorred all things primitive. Next Foster considers the technophilic subjects propounded by the futurist Marinetti and the vorticist Lewis. These "new egos" are further contrasted with the "bachelor machines" proposed by the dadaist Ernst. Foster also explores extrapolations from the art of the mentally ill in the aesthetic models of Ernst, Paul Klee, and Jean Dubuffet, as well as manipulations of the female body in the surrealist photography of Brassai, Man Ray, and Hans Bellmer. Finally, he examines the impulse to dissolve the conventions of art altogether in the drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, the scatter pieces of Robert Morris, and the earthworks of Robert Smithson, and traces the evocation of lost objects of desire in sculptural work from Marcel Duchamp and Alberto Giacometti to Robert Gober.

Although its title is drawn from Freud, Prosthetic Gods does not impose psychoanalytic theory on modernist art; rather, it sets the two into critical relation and scans the greater historical field that they share.

It's nice to see new quality Futurama artwork. Coworkers stop by to discuss their appreciation for Futurama and other cartoons they've seen on Adult Swim (most missed the show when Fox aired it intermittently on Sunday evenings).

A calendar is a calendar. For that matter, my watch, cell phone and computers can tell me what day it is. This calendar, however, makes me smile.

First cigars and gin topped the list. Then red meat, Cadillacs, coffee with caffeine, and sleeping late all began to edge toward extinction. Barbara Holland makes an impassioned defense of life's little pleasures in a book that will entertain diehard sinners, comfort the secretly licentious, and encourage those who just need a little nudge to abandon jogging and no-fat salad dressing.

                  5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2007-03-23

The subtitle reads, "In Defense of Naps, Bacon, Martinis, Profanity, and Other Indulgences." The Washington Post said it's, "so pleasingly subversive that the reader falls into a reverie of his own remembered pleasures." The chapters have titles like, "Naps," "Speed," "Bad Words," "Whistling," "Bare Feet," and "Gardening." They are every bit as wonderful as they sound.

The crux of this read is that rest and relaxation with friends and family are infintely more rewarding (and important) than a job performance review. This is my favorite gift for workaholics and makes perfect vacation reading.

                  Highly recommended.

I even sent this book to my friend who has stopped smoking and drinking - so it's not just a book about only the real decadent things in life - it's about rejoicing in all the pleasures!

5 out of 5 stars A talent for recording perceptions.......2007-01-02

ENDANGERED PLEASURES is perhaps mistitled as it's not credible to think any of the 67 things and activities listed, from the morning paper to cigarettes to bare feet to weekends to gambling to winter to babies, are actually in peril of extinction. "Unappreciated" might be more a apropos term instead of "endangered". The book's subtitle says it all more succinctly: IN DEFENSE OF NAPS, BACON, MARTINIS, PROFANITY AND OTHER INDULGENCES.

Author/essayist Barbara Holland has a remarkable talent for perceiving the small details of life and living. Or rather, a talent for remembering what she perceives and subsequently bringing it to the attention of the lumpish rest of us. For instance, on the "being there" phase of travel:

"The hee-haw of the ambulance in the foreign streets sings with a pure and alien glamour, quite unrelated to the irritating scream of emergency vehicles back home." Now, I've noticed that on my own overseas walk-abouts, but would never think it worth mentioning to the folks back home.

And, on a more sobering note, regarding the psychology of crowds:

"Face to face with, say, Adolph Hitler at a table for two, we would have jeered at his passions, protested, flounced out in a snit. In a crowd of thousands, all cheering and brandishing fists, we might have stood in the path of the electric current, felt the blood of common cause rise joyfully in our throats, and cheered too ... Deep inside each of us lurks a chained lemming, struggling to break free, and we need to keep an eye on it."

I admire Holland's talent for social commentary. She reminds me of Andy Rooney, but without the crankiness. Rooney might like to think he's a national treasure; Barbara truly is.

In this study, the first to consider Luchino Visconti's entire oeuvre, Henry Bacon examines the films of one of Italy's preeminent filmmakers against the cultural, historical, and biographical contexts in which they were made. Through analysis of his achievements, Visconti also emerges as a twentieth century inheritor and renewer of the nineteenth-century narrative tradition, especially that of the novel and the opera.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Visconti.......1998-12-24

Henry Bacon has proven himself a brilliant researcher and author by writing the finest, and truest account of the master of film Luchino Visconti. Bacon's book is a highly detailed, fact filled documentary of the director's vision as it relates to his spectacular career. The book is the ultimate guide to anyone studying film or researching Visconti. Bacon has properly and intelligently put into context Visconti's aristocratic background in relation to his developing career, he has included every single film, and planned project including those that have been lost, and goes in-depth to discuss Visconti's frame of mind, project by project, and how his entire brillant career developed. Bacon has a clear intellectual knowledge of the true Visconti and has the facts to back up his claims. The work is in itself a masterpiece of film research. It is truly the finest biographical documentary of Visconti to date.

Amateur, cheap looking finishes. I was looking help with finishes that look like they came from Habersham or other great furniture makers.

5 out of 5 stars this is one of the handiest books i own........2004-08-06

This book is not for the person who wants to do huge amounts of serious woodworking, and you need to come to it with an imagination. What it does is effectively tell you how to do a hundred or so styles and techniques. You can't replicate everything that's in here, but it's simply incredible to go through when you have a beat up old piece of furniture, and are open to thoughtful, imaginative refinishing.

                          1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE BOOK.......2001-12-02

I bought this, and both my wife and I went through it, and we both agreed that it was a worthless book. I can't believe it was ever published. I have returned it and will never buy another book by this author. Sorry to be so negative, but this book truly is worthless.

5 out of 5 stars plenty of specific info for DIY types.......2000-10-25

This is preciesly the book I was looking for! Has copious details about re-finishing all kinds of furniture surfaces, from bare wood to laminate to steel, plus how to get a wide variety of effects. This book has a higher level of detail than many other faux finishes books (which often skip over how to prep the surface or how to deal w/any surface other than bare wood).

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST............2000-10-17

I stumbled upon this gem of a book while on a recent day trip to Northampton, MA. Since its discovery I cannot put it down and have begun some of the projects in it. This book is a packed full of helpful ideas and the book's standout feature is that step-by-step guides serve to help the novice in creating a replica of the pictures that exist in the book. Wagstaff & Thurgood's book is softcovered vinyl. Should paint get on it it is easily wiped clean. For certain, I will be purchasing 2-3 copies for friends and relatives as Christmas presents!!!

Having earned my livihood from real estate investments for the last 6 years, I am always in the market for books that may provide a new idea. This book doesn't. It is nothing more than an infomercial for van Roos' seminars and private tutoring. The methods are straight out of Aesop's fairey tales. Burns, the student, is ridiculous. Do not waste your money on this most bogus and worthless product. The real world doesn't operate this way.

If I wanted to read an egotistical self-congratulatory book, I'd pick up an autobiography. If you want to learn about real estate investment, this is not the book for you. I was very disappointed.

Not worth the time nor money. This book promotes the idea of buying real estate through WE BUY HOUSES signs and through ads in newspapers. Ideal for groups of investors who have plenty of time, capital and OPM to invest around the country.
