This book was very good, but it had the same comics as another of Stephan Pastis' books, "Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic". So if you already have that, don't get this.

This is the greatest collection ever!Everything is so funny,and they have a rat.True,pure classics.They are unlike the junk in other strips like 'Family Circus','Rose is Rose','Dr. Drake',and 'Marmaduke'.This almost matches the cuteness of bats.

Pastis will go to ANY length to set up what would normally be a semi-lame word play; it ends up being great. He also is the master of writing conversations where each participant consistently misunderstands the other to humorous effect.
Rat is funniest at his most threatening. He tells the neighbor to get rid of the kumquats on his lawn--or face Rat's secondhand Soviet missile. Pig is funny just being Pig--only dimly aware of the reality around him. And Zebra's interactions with various potential predators is hilarious. Great book; buy it!

This is an enjoyable read. PBS is quickly becoming the second-best new strip in the newspaper -- behind the sublime "Pooch Cafe."

Very possibly the best of the Bloom County collections........2005-04-20
This collection does a marvellous job of walking the fine line between the hilariously funny and the absurdly silly. Some of the other Bloom County collections fall off of that line and land in the absurdly silly zone; for the most part, this one avoids that flaw. A must for any fan of the collection, and a good place to start for someone who isn't familiar with it. Of course, anyone too young to remember the '80s may miss some of the then-topical political references (a murderous alien that looks like a cute, telegenic puppy testifying before congress a la Ollie North, for instance) but for the most part, even if the reference is unfamiliar to the reader, the humor is only reduced, not lost entirely.
Nostalgia so soon?.......2004-09-19
Bloom County was and still is one of my favorite strip comics ever. It was often topical, referring to presidents, sitcoms, and other Americana of its day. Such subjects, when they appear, give this comic a dated look, almost like watching the Marx Brothers.
Most of the strips, however, are timeless. Opus' personality is as sweet and doofy as ever. Oliver Wendell Jones still gets in trouble, the kind no one has the heart to punish him for. Steve Dallas is still a jerk, the kind of jerk that I still find today. All the rest are still there, too, as good as they ever were.
It's a funny mix, news from the 80s mixed with topics that work today, and it's still a funny strip. If, someohow, you missed the original run of Bloom County in the daily funnies, you'll find that it's never too late to catch up. Enjoy!

Humor and political insight unparalleled.......2004-05-16
Berke Breathed was one of those rare political cartoonists whose political insight was the same weight as his humor. "Bloom County" was his greatest vehicle. Some other cartoons have great political scope but just don't make you laugh out loud--"Doonesbury" and "Mallard Fillmore", particularly. While others fake political insight, but are very humorous. "Tales Too Ticklish to Tell: Bloom County" is as good as any of the other Bloom County anthologies, but it's the inclusion of a Bloom Picayune that makes this an extra treat, and serves as a reminder that this strip was special for its time. Boy, do I miss it.
The Way We Were, 1987 Edition..........2004-01-14
In 1987, America's obsessions included the Iran-Contra affair, the NFL players' strike, the peculiar pecadilloes of televangelists and the effect they had on their "flocks," and the impending election of a new President from a crop of unlikely candidates. It is this America that Berke Breathed took a snapshot of, and is thus preserved for the ages within the pages of this, the sixth collection of Bloom County comic strips (covering late 1986 through virtually all of '87).
The longest and best continuity contained in this book is the one in which the Meadow denizens find themselves completely brainwashed by Bill the Cat's new teleministry. Calling himself "Fundamentally Oral Bill," he manages to convince everyone of the true danger lurking in the shadows of America - "Penguin Lust!" Guess who *that* directly affects... Opus soon finds himself hounded completely out of town, the victim of a misguided religious fervor. The strip then follows Opus as he takes a job as a male stripper for Chippendales, meets up with various celebrities-of-the-moment, and finally ends up aimlessly wandering a vast creative wasteland, completely without direction or a script. ("Boy, do I feel like the Democratic party!", he utters at one point.) Eventually, though, all is forgiven, and he's welcomed back to the Boarding House.
In other developments, Opus actually gets hitched to his girlfriend of a year's standing, Lola Granola... only to knock himself out cold on her face when leaning in for a post-nuptial kiss. (It's his nose, you see.) While unconscious, he envisions what life would be like after twenty years of marriage; it eventually ends with Lola leaving him for a rocket mechanic, and Opus left to raise their 23 test-tube babies. Needless to say, the first word out of his mouth when he comes to: "Annullment." Luckily for him, Lola was having second thoughts of her own, and so that storyline (begun in the previous book) is ended.
Then, there's the strike... The Bloom County Players' Union, taking a stand against the increased size reduction of newspaper comic strips over the years, walks off the job in a direct swipe at the NFL's labor troubles of that year. In retaliation, W.A. Thornhump (President and CEO of Bloom County, Inc.) hires a "scab" replacement cast, with predictable results.
The Iran-Contra hearings are also parodied, as Oliver makes contact with alien raiders who intend to harvest humans for slaves and food ("THEY AIN'T E.T.," scream the newspapers). The federal government retaliates the only way they know how - subponeas. Unfortunately for them, the aliens prove to be extremely telegenic puppy dogs, and public opinion soon overwhelmingly turns in their favor as a result. The representative depicted in these strips may just as well have been named "Lt. Col. Oliver North," because that's exactly who he's supposed to be talking like. Breathed's message is clear - with the right look and the right words, America can and will forgive just about any crime, no matter how heinous. Times really haven't changed all that much...
Also included is the series of strips that made headlines of a sort, when Bill the Cat was fingered in a "Bible-study" scandal with a middle-aged woman originally named "Edith Dreck." Breathed wasn't aware of it at the time, but the word "dreck" is Yiddish for excrement, and his use of the term raised quite a few eyebrows. The spelling was changed in subsequent reprintings (this book included) to "Drock," but the incident provided fuel for many future gags in Bloom County whereby a sensitive reader would become completely irrational over an offensive word on the comics page.
And in the final long continuity reprinted here, Steve Dallas is kidnapped by aliens (different ones this time, though) and put through a process called "Gephardtization" - by which his personality and beliefs are turned around the complete 180 degrees. As a result, the womanizing conservative ex-preppie lawyer emerges from the process as a feminist liberal Jesse Jackson supporter... completely useless as a defense attorney, and not much better as a lover. Although readers made it clear they preferred the old Steve, Breathed would maintain this new version of his oldest character up until just before the end of Bloom County itself in 1989. There was, after all, just as much humor to be mined from the "sensitive male" as there was from the "stereotypical MAN'S MAN."
As a bonus, the book also includes a pull-out section - a copy of the Bloom Picayune, Bloom County's best (and only) daily newspaper.
Highly recommended for scholars of newspaper comics... but then, you probably already knew that.
A genius of political humor.......2000-06-18
Breathed is a great cartoonist in general, but his political satire is without equal. For those of us coming of age politically in the mid- to late-1980s, this book will provide a constant source of laughs, from disgraced televangilists to football strikes to (my all-time favorite) alien dogs that look and act surprisingly like Oliver North. DO NOT GET THIS BOOK, I ORDERED IT ALONG WITH FRETBOARD LOGIC AND THIS BOOK PALES IN COMPARISON, HE ALSO SPEAKS AS IF YOU ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING HE IS TALKING ABOUT WHICH ALOT OF BEGINNERS WILL HAVE NO CLUE OF. HIS EXPLANATION OF THE F-D-A ROADMAP IS PATHETIC COMPARED TO THE CAGED EXPLANATION IN BILL EDWARDS FRETBOARD LOGIC. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A BIG FAVOR AND GET FRETBOARD LOGIC 1,2 AND 3INSTEAD.

If you use this book in conjunction with the basic Guitar Fretboard Roadmaps you'll do yourself (and your guitar) a great favor. I frequently do crossword puzzles and am always buying the New York Times Easy Crossword Puzzle books. This one is really disappointing, it has many of the same puzzles as The New York Times Crosswords for a Lazy Afternoon : 200 Easy, Breezy Puzzles
. It was a waste to spend money on this book when it has the same puzzles as the other book. It sucks to open up to a random page and have the puzzle be exactly the same as one I have already done. I wanted an easy crossword book, that just makes it too easy.

You'll want to give this to your friends.
Suze is great. She helps take care of everything, not just budgets. This one was the best of the money books I've read; it left me with more money and more peace of mind. This is the only one I've given away to a friend, and I'm buying it again for myself.

PRETTY GOOD, BUT READ THIS.......2007-04-19
Does Orman know her stuff? Definitely. Is this book concise, well written and to the point, a no nonsense primer on achieving financial stability? Yes it is. Does Orman pander to the lowest common denominator, i.e. those with virtually no financial acumen? In my opinion, yes she does.
I recently read an interview with Orman in the Wall street Journal where she claimed that of her $25 million in net worth she only has a million in the stock market. That's 4%. Most financial experts would assert that's way too little. But Orman's not an investor, she's a common sense lady with a brass tacks approach to money, and it serves her well.
And I just read a book I like even better than Suze. Dave Barry's "Money Secrets" contains a dead on skewering of Orman. If you're familiar with Orman's approach and like Barry, you have to check this out. Dave Barry's Money Secrets: Like: Why Is There a Giant Eyeball on the Dollar?

This book laid out the basics for someone who had to start from square one-half. I had no expectations and was pleased with what I found.
The Good:
1. I have found the idea of looking into your past/emotions about money to be useful.
2. Nowhere else have I found such clear explanations of so much investment lingo. I feel like I will be able to understand Businessweek much better now.
The Bad:
1. I can see how high expectations could lead to disappointment; the claims of psycho-babble are not altogether wrong.
2. I think Suze Orman does not appreciate how good she is with money; most of us should probably not invest by instinct, the way she says we should.
Verdict:
Excellent reference for rock bottom beginner wondering where to go next, but don't believe everything you read.

I'm finding out that by reading some of Suze's books, they might be a little outdated. However, the basic principles apply. You need to do something to set yourself free from the financial burden and this is a great book to start with.

My boyfriend had this book on his shelf for years....a guft from his mother. I decided after a few years I was going to read it.
The financial lessons in the book are great! I learned about trusts, wills, etc. Things I would not have thought of, and Suze explains them in a very down to earth, non-intimidating way. She usually blends a true story in.
Because I loved the book so much I started watching the show. Suze is very eccentric and does have some crazy ideas. But, more than a financial planner she is a people person. A very opinionated people person. My boyfriend could not stomach the show because of her eccentric ways- but he came around when I raved about the advice, and things I'd learned.
Suze is just Suze.....so if you've ever seen her show-- she writes like she talks....A no BS kind of gal.
From analyzing the way in which you organize your money in your wallet, to respecting it- you learn the inner reasons why you don't always create wealth for yourself. It may seem far-fetched. However, I am a strong believer that the mind is very powerful. I've done much better financially speaking since I heeded her advice!

I was really impressed with this audiobook. It gave tons of useful information, and Suze explains it in a way that anyone could understand. She also gives great "real-world" examples. This is definitely one of very few audiobooks that you can keep and listen to again later to refresh your memory on a topic. Highly recommended!!

I mean it says that right on this Amazon website and it is advertized as a mini book so why would any intelligent (key word: intelligent) think otherwise before buying it?

What makes Ms. Orman's book standout from the field (she covers most of the topics other writers do) are two very useful insights: (1) that our psychology and subconscous has a lot to do with how we do (or do not) manage money; and (2) money, in and of itself, does not have power over us; indeed, it is the other way around -- the way we manage our money speaks about who we are. Other than these two insights (which are elloquently communicated) Ms. Orman covers the basics -- get out of debt, make sure your family is protected (emergency fund, life insurance, etc.), invest for retirement and college for the kids. She does a very good job in the relatively short book of covering these fields in sufficient depth. I would also recommend her most recent book "The Laws of Money, The Lessons of life...". A note to those who dislike her philosophical/religious diversions -- do not let them stand in the way of receiving some excellent advice.

I have read several reviews here (obviously by the same person) attacking this book and insulting Suze because of i t's size.
EXCUSE ME--but the information states clearly that this is a miniture book. The price might also be a clue.
If you were "taken by surprise", then all I can suggets is learn how to read.

There were some very good personal stories and some lessons that can be drawn from them. The unabridged version may have more offerings but one would probably want to move on to the next book by this author.
