But the question is... will second-best be enough for Victor Von Doom? Plus: Tony Stark is the smartest, most successful Sapien on the planet - the best and brightest of a dying species. Does it bother him that the House of M uses the technology produced by Tony's multi-billion-dollar company to keep Sapiens down? That must be the reason he keeps his most powerful creation a secret - a familiar-looking suit of armor! Collects House of M: Fantastic Four #1-3 and House of M: Iron Man #1-3.

Classic Marvel heroes re-envisioned in the House of M.......2007-05-31
Collecting both the Fantastic Four and Iron Man mini-series' spawned from Brian Michael Bendis' House of M, House of M: Fantastic Four/Iron Man features classic Marvel icons re-envisioned in the alternate reality where mutants are the dominant species and humans are the oppressed. The Fantastic Four mini is the most interesting of the two, in which Reed Richards and Susan Storm never survived their trip into space. Instead, the Fantastic Four are led by Victor Von Doom (who never had has scarring accident) who also serves as Magneto's right hand man. Ben Grimm is the only original FF member here, as Doom plans to usurp Magneto's rule and power at any stake. The Iron Man mini finds Tony Stark being one of the world's most powerful humans as he designs and sells weapons to the House of Magnus. However, he also has a familiar iron suit in the wings for which he uses to help the oppressed humans of the world. Throughout each mini, you'll see plenty of familiar faces like Hank Pym and such, and each mini is entertaining and features great art as well. All in all, this House of M tie-in is definitely worth picking up.
Two Interesting Stories That Augment House of M.......2006-02-23
These two stories serve to show what other characters were up to while Wolverine was uncovering the events of House of M. They provide backstory into why certain things happened towards the end of the series.
In the Fantastic Four arc, Reed Richards and Susan Storm died when they went up into space. The radiation from the cosmic cloud was too much for them to handle. Instead of Johnny Storm, J. Jonah Jameson's son John accompanied them and also ended up dead. Ben Grimm was there as well, and barely made it out alive. The shuttle crashed in Latveria, home of Victor von Doom. Doom, who never suffered an accident (thus he needs no mask) is the King of Latveria, and things seem to be going well for him. His mother is alive, he has a great family, and, even though he's human, he is Magneto's second-in-command. However, he desires more, but since he is human, this is as far as he will ever get. Until he is inspired by the corpses of Richards, Storm, and Jameson. He realizes that he can develop a method to safely harness the radiation that mutated the Americans to give his family superpowers that parallel those of the Fantastic Four. Using Ben Grimm as "The It", his wife as the Invincible Woman, and his son as the Inhuman Torch, they try to usurp power from the House of M.
The one thing I found kind of strange about this story is that the point of House of M is that the Scarlet Witch gave the people she knew their greatest wishes. However, since she was an Avenger, it is more likely that she knew Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four and would have given them their greatest wishes. Other than that, this is an interesting look at Dr. Doom and how he would have preferred his life to turn out.
In the Iron Man story, Tony Stark is still billionaire industrialist, but now he works out of Chicago. He is pretty much the most respected human in the business world, and he is famous for his skills at "Sapien Death Match", an American Gladiators-type show in which he, Johnny Storm, and his father (who is alive in the House of M reality) don power suits to fight sentinels. While on the surface Stark seems to be ok with the mutant domination of the world (most of his technology that he develops gets sold to the House of M to use against humans), he keeps his greatest invention to himself in order to use to help the oppressed humans. Hank Pym has a pivotal role in this story, and the introduction of his character in the main House of M arc pays off here.
Of the two stories, I preferred the Iron Man one. They both have their merits, and they both effectively enhance the main House of M storyline, so this is definitely more for comic purists and completists.

Who needs to speak Japanese? There's a lot you can say with traditional hand gestures and body motions that are universal as well as uniquely Japanese. This whimsical look at "the language of no language" will teach you to hurl insults, flirt, agree, excuse yourself, cross the street, and even make promises-wordlessly! (And who is that stoic guy wearing a suit in all the photos?) Finally, a way to tell someone at a loud party, "Your underwear is showing," in four easy hand motions. This is a book for the serious student, the class clown, and the crazy guy at Akihabara Station hoping to communicate with Godzilla.
Hamiru-aqui is a Japanese artist based in Tokyo.

Hilarious...and helpful.......2007-07-12
This book was funny and insightful. It makes visitors to Japan aware that much can be said through a gesture and great offense or insult as well. It's always a good idea to research any country that you are going to visit and this book brings the reader one step closer to avoiding potentially sticky situations.
Just keep your hands in your pockets. .......2007-03-10
I'm not sure this was a better choice than the rather terrible and strange Hungry Sailor cookbook. I did learn that the way I make a fist in my sleep is a rude gesture but I regret doing this Amazon promo. Instead of getting 25% off on 4 books I wanted, I got one book I liked and three that were a waste. Never again.
Amazing wealth of knowledge about Japanese culture.......2005-12-14
If you're a fan of the Japanese culture, then you know that communication is often full of non-verbal communication - hand gestures, body movements. Here's the way to decipher what those mean!
Written by Hamiru-aqui and translated by Aileen Chang, this brilliant book contains photos of a Japanese person doing the gesture, the name of the gesture and its full history. This is invaluable whether you read manga, watch anime, or enjoy any sort of Japanese cinema.
For example, what does it mean when a Japanese person puts a pair of fists in front of their nose, making their nose look longer? Does it mean they're telling a lie, like in Pinnochio? Hardly! It's actually representing a tengu, or Japanese demon. Tengu were known as being very conceited, so this hand gesture means you think the person you're referring to is an overly-proud person.
The book is full of not only standard hand symbols but also swears and 'dangerous hand movements', ranked by intensity. There are some hand movements you definitely do NOT want to do to a Japanese person - but you might not even realize it!
It's like the middle finger in American / British culture. That middle finger movement has a long history and immediately means something to us. To other cultures, it might not mean anything at all. Just as when we see a middle finger stuck at us we get an instant reaction, so do the Japanese get instant reactions to certain hand gestures and body movements.
This book is the key to deciphering what those movements mean, so that your enjoyment of the Japanese culture is even more complete!
Highly recommended, and very entertaining!
Book Description
At the beginning of 1992, no one had heard of Quentin Tarantino. By mid-1995, Quentinmania was in high gear, and he was being hailed as the hip new Oscar-toting messiah of film making. In this irreverant personal biography and in-depth study, Jeff Dawson interrogates Tarantino about his early influences, his use of violence, and accusations of plagiarism. Dawson takes the reader behind the scenes of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Destiny Turns on the Radio, to get a glimpse of Quentin through the eyes of Harvey Keitel, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth and other Tarantino gang members interviewed for this book. Includes dialogue that didn't make it into the final cut, as well as the original plot twists for True Romance and Natural Born Killers that got axed by the censors. Includes great color and black and white photos throughout.
Customer Reviews:
The Cin-enema of Fools.......2004-04-23
(...) Tarentino's films are universally and fundamentally boring for anyone who has ever lived a real life and not just fantasized about having one. His dipictions of violence eminate from his own personal lack of sexual energy. Sadly, teenage males without girlfriends seem to like these slammed together video games that are being called brilliant, and continue to support the trash factory that generates this type of hyper garbage. (...)
THE pop bio of the quintessential 90's pop auteur.......2000-08-08
Well-paced and revealing, this "not-too-long," "not-too-short" bio reads like the Everyman-movie-geek fantasy that it is. The author spent considerable time following Tarantino around as he began his attack on Hollywood in 1992, with Reservoir Dogs, and as such, he was given enviable access to the celebrities that found their way into the young director's orbit. Extensive one-on-one interviews-- with such H'wood players as Samuel L. Jackson, Tony Scott, Harvey Keitel, as well as collaborators Roger Avary and Laurence Bender, not to mention the man himself--offer an entertaining glimpse into the mind of the struggling actor who decided he would have a better shot at success if he wrote his own screenplays, and went on to direct arguably the best film of the 1990s, Pulp Fiction.
Bonus revelations include Tarantino and Co.'s experience acting in the indie flick Destiny Turns on the Radio, QT's reaction following both the 1994 Cannes D'Or Award and the predictable Forrest Gump Oscar landslide of 1995 that left Tarantino & Avary holding only the Best Screenplay statuette, as well as Tarantino's side of the story regarding his battle with the producers of Natural Born Killers. An all-around good read that is honest enough to suggest Tarantino as perhaps the next Orson Welles-as-washed-up-has-been, and wise enough in the end to bet against it.

Product Description
Long before the invention of talk radio, music was the heart and soul of radio programmingwhether standing alone, filling in the time between features, or identifying to widespread audiences the shows coming on and signing off the air. Jim Coxs Music Radio encompasses the entire range of musical programming from the early 1920s to the early 1960s. Jazz, country, classical, gospel, pop, big band, western, and semi-classical forms are covered, as are the vocalists, instrumentalists and disc jockeys who made them available to listeners. Virtually all the major series and artists are explored in depth, and lesser known shows and performers are touched on as well. Some of the series included are The Bing Crosby Show, The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, The Fred Waring Show, Grand Ole Opry, The Bell Telephone Hour, The Cities Service Concerts, Your Hit Parade, The Kate Smith Show, The Railroad Hour, and The Voice of Firestone.

An Aspect of Old-Time Radio Finally Well-Covered.......2006-03-13
Music Radio: The Great Performers and Programs of the 1920s through Early 1960s
By Jim Cox
Radio brought live entertainment into American homes; not only dramas and comedies, but also live music programs were beamed across the air waves during the Golden Age of Radio. Because of Radio, listeners could hear live music of every genre without ever leaving their homes.
Therefore, it is somewhat surprising that only a relatively few overview books have been written about the music programs of Radio's Golden Age. Old-Time Radio authority and author Jim Cox has helped rectify this oversight with the publication of MUSIC RADIO: The Great Performers and Programs of the 1920s through Early 1960s. In doing so, he has significantly increased our knowledge of broadcast music.
MUSIC RADIO covers the entire gamut of radio musical programming starting in the 1920s and continuing through the early 1960s. Classical, operatic, big band, jazz, country, western, gospel, sacred, pop, and semi-classical music forms are explored in the entertaining and informative style that is a trademark of Jim Cox volumes on American Old-Time Radio.
Jim has written comprehensive essays on ten major musical programs: The Bell Telephone Hour, The Bing Crosby Show, The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, Cities Service Concerts, The Fred Waring Show, Grand Ole Opry, The Kate Smith Show, The Railroad Hour, The Voice of Firestone, and Your Hit Parade. The treatment of each of these series includes considerable information on performers, writers, production personnel, sponsors, ratings, dates on the air, and time slots.
Additionally, he has provided chapters on The Big Bands, The Classics, The Contests, The Disc Jockeys, The Hummert Musicales, The Horse Operas, The House Bands, The Sacred Singers, and The Vocalists. These chapters provide significant insight into the origins and development of these music genres on the radio air waves. Also included is extensive information on many radio series in these various genres.
Throughout his book, the author provides extensive biographical and program credits information on more than 125 prominent performers and groups, conductors, producers, announcers, hosts, and disk jockeys from the Golden Age of Radio Broadcast Music. For example, The Vocalists chapter includes information on the signature and hits tunes, career highlights, and radio programs of The Andrews Sisters, Jack Berch, Eddie Cantor, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, Bob Crosby, Morton Downey, Eddie Fisher, Jane Froman, The Happiness Boys, Dick Haymes, Al Jolson, Peggy Lee, Curt Massey, Vaughn Monroe, Jane Pickens, Lanny Ross, Ginny Simms, Jack Smith, Jo Stafford, Mel Torme, Arthur Tracey, and Rudy Vallee.
Jim Cox is one of the most productive writers on the Golden Age of Radio. He has written entertainingly and authoritatively about Radio soap operas, audience participation shows, detective and police shows, the programs of Frank and Anne Hummert, and the final decade of the Golden Age of Radio. With his new book, MUSIC RADIO, Jim has added much to our knowledge of this important segment of Old-Time Radio.
MUSIC RADIO is a book well worth adding to your Old-Time Radio library.
Documents the presence and importance of musical programming through all the genres and station focuses.......2005-10-08
Before the invention of 'talk radio' music was the cornerstone of radio programming - and Jim Cox's Music Radio: The Great Performers And Programs Of The 1920s Through Early 1960s documents the presence and importance of musical programming through all the genres and station focuses. Major series as well as artists are explored in detail, with many less-popular shows and performers included. Sections cover the classics, the disc jockeys who played the music and chose the sound, house bands, sacred singers, and much more. Each section provides a detailed historical overview, mention of major influences and personalities, and insights into music evolution from and influence on radio shows.

Serious Electronics.......2003-12-09
This book teaches practical,
hands-on experience with some exciting
science projects that you aren't likely to
encounter elsewhere.
The ultrasonic listener extends the sense of
hearing to the realm of sounds above 20kHz.
The low-power one-transistor fm radio
transmitter is a useful tool to have in
your bag of tricks; it can be built on an
hour's notice, and for under $1.
It is an educational and worthwhile book.
That's the good news.
Now for a word of caution:
What I'm suggesting here is that you approach
the projects in this great book with wisdom and
an ability to think vigorously and persistently.
On one hand, If you mangage to complete and operate
all this book's projects, including adjustment of the
high-voltage supply of the cutting CO2 laser, and still
have not qualified for a postumous Darwin Award, then you
have demonstrated you are either a bizzarrely lucky fool
or a master technician who has the iron will to stay
alive by sticking to impeccable safety procedures.
And before you make your own homemade EMP generator,
consider that, at the time Mr. Ianinni wrote
this wonderous book, the electronic landscape
was much less involved, without the so many
co$tly thing$ like cell phone$ and PDA$ in it.
The radius of de$truction could lead irate
villagers (now reduced to a technological level of
torches and pitchforks) directly to your laboratory.
At least one of the devices i.e taser, have gotten
negative legislative attention since the book was
first published.
Ok; so now you know some of these projects
are genuinely hazardous.
Take care. Pay attention. Get old.
Keep one hand in your pocket.
The Book Makes It Possible.......2003-08-05
Alot of neat gadgets and plans in this book. The schematics are accompanied by a drawing with resistors etc. It is amazing this book came out in '83 since alot of these gadgets are unheard of. Probably because they do have a degree of safety that should be applied to their use. The writer sells the actual products in kits or pre built. He backs them up with proven theory and experience. I probably wont build many or one of the gadgets but the book is excellent reference and one of a kind, until his next one comes out. Which will be worth a read as well.
Old Book, New Electronics.......2001-12-21
This is an exlent book of electronics fo beginners and experts alike. It gives step-by-step instructions on building real lasers, imitation lasers, cutting lasers, sonic devices, ultrasonic devices, magnetic disturbance detectors, and much more. Requires little or no electrical experience.
Unique book.......2001-07-23
This is a very cool book, but it really is not for the average joe. You get a parts list, and some limited instructions, and then a picture of how the project should look when it's like 75% done. It is hard to follow. From parts list to 3/4 done in a matter of like a page.
Amazing Book!.......1999-11-27
This is an amazing book with plans for anything cool that you could ever want to build. It has very clear, and easy to understand instructions. There are lots of diagrams, and detailed parts lists. All of the things work very well, and the material cost are all less than 100 dollars.
Book Description
Twenty-five years ago, Herb Kelleher reinvented air travel when he founded Southwest Airlines, where the planes are painted like killer whales, a typical company maxim is "Hire people with a sense of humor," and in-flight meals are never served--just sixty million bags of peanuts a year. By sidestepping "reengineering," "total quality management," and other management philosophies and employing its own brand of business success, Kelleher's airline has turned a profit for twenty-four consecutive years and seen its stock soar 300 percent since 1990.
Today, Southwest is the safest airline in the world and ranks number one in the industry for service, on-time performance, and lowest employee turnover rate; and Fortune magazine has twice ranked Southwest one of the ten best companies to work for in America. How do they do it?
With unlimited access to the people and inside documents of Southwest Airlines, authors Kevin and Jackie Freiberg share the secrets behind the greatest success story in commercial aviation. Read it and discover how to transfer the Southwest inspiration to your own business and personal life.
Customer Reviews:
Such a great story, everyone should read it. Especially anyone interested in business........2007-09-21
Yeah, this is a business book, but it is a lot more of value and is a lot more fun than most of them. Get it, read it, think about it, and enjoy it. The title has multiple meanings. It refers to Southwest's policy of giving its short haul passengers a bag of peanuts instead of meals (they give out tens of millions of bags each year). Those bags of nuts also stand for Southwest's healthy obsession with keeping their costs down so they can keep their fares low. And "Nuts!" also refers to the founders of the company starting a low cost airline in Texas in the age of regulated airlines (do you remember that time) and their radical approach to carrying passengers. Basically, outside of safety and maintenance, whatever the big airlines did, Southwest did it just about the opposite way.
Where the big airlines used the hub and spoke to fly more full flights, Southwest chose point-to-point and a 10-15 minutes turn around time to keep the planes in the air. Where the big airlines encouraged uniforms and professionalism, Southwest went with hotpants and outrageous behavior (now they use khaki shorts, but the personality of the flight attendants is more like a stand up routine). Instead of meals, peanuts. Instead of assigned seats, you pick it on board. Instead of the multi-part printed ticket, you get a paper receipt with the words "THIS IS A TICKET" printed on it. There is a LOT more just like this.
Learning from Herb Kelleher's approach to business and his actually being able to make money in the airline business is fascinating stuff. A great read because Kevin & Jackie Freiberg not only write well, they know how to organize the material to make it especially valuable to us. Just terrific. Strongly recommended to everyone because it is such an interesting story.

NUTS!.......2007-07-30
This book is a must read for anyone in the business world. Herb's theories and ideas should be mirrored by anyone in or out of the airline industry.
Employees come first.......2007-07-08
This book has now been in print for 11 years but is still a valuable read. As most people spend more waking hours at work and the field to find highly qualified people becomes more competitive, a successful company will create an environment that is flat, allows the employees to grow, challenge and enjoy coming to work.
I did find the book a little long and verbose on praises. If you do find the beginning a little long and are lacking the time, do not miss out on the last 3 chapters. Although commonsense it lays out how it is within SWA
Leaders leading Leaders

It will be interesting to see how the story plays out from 2007 with even greater pressure on oil prices, and with potential changes relating to Herbert D. Kelleher as Chairman of the Board at the age of 75; and, also Colleen C. Barrett as President, Secretary, Director at the age of 62.
In the end, you have to give credit to the company that keeps the employees as priority #1 and still manages to take its stock from about US$9 in 1998 to about US$ 15 in 2007. It seems the shareholders are not overly concerned. And as the book notes itself, there is no lone ranger at SWA. Leadership is fostered within the organization.
"Nuts" but then it expains the real success. Worth reading.......2007-02-04
You probably don't have to be a Southwest fan to enjoy this book but it helps. It just adds insight and confirms what you already now. Try to change a reservation or cancel one and you quickly find out this company is different. Chapters 19, Customers Come Second, and Chapter 20 Employees come first may as much as anything go to the heart of their message.
Backing their employees, empowering them, and a real loyalty to them is demonstrated in example after example. The lessons the pilots learned working as ramp agents would apply to any industry and even though what they did isn't unique it fits so well into the overall story that it is exciting to revisit the method of bringing a team together.
The book reminds me of Jim Collins book, "Good to Great" and "Built to Last". Those books seem to show ways to change a company and to make them into great ones. "Nuts" is about a company that has been great right from the beginning. Rather than concentrating on fixing things is shows how the company created itself.
This book was given to me. I hadn't read a business book in a while. I wasn't looking for a rally to success and was a little hesitant. People who believe in what they are doing and want to do the right things for the right reasons have a good message and this is worth reading just for the example it presents and it's message.
The official story behind a great airline.......2006-12-20
Southwest is the darling of the airline industry. This is the story of how three people formed an airline from an idea on a cocktail napkin. This covers the legal aspects of flying as well as the success of southwest by empowering their employees. It has the great Herb Keller stories along the way. If you are interested in studying the airline industry this is a must read to gain a perspective of one of the most profitable and successful airlines that has truly carved a niche for itself.
