Customer Reviews:
great inspiration.......2007-04-04
I love this book and have read it from cover to cover. Shirley Trevena's paintings are thrilling to look at, the text is very readible and the layout keeps you turning the pages. I have been painting watercolours of flowers and still life for many years but Shirley Trevena shows me new ways to forge ahead, and fun ways to overcome some of the obstacles I have been facing in my work. Congratulations also to Albert Jackson and the other photographers for a truly excellent book. I look forward to the other book by Trevena.
New inspiration.......2006-11-23
Although the title of the book refers to watercolour painting only, artists using other mediums will get inspiration as well.
Shirley Travena dives into the medium with enthusiasm (no tepid, sepia palette here!) incorporating watercolour with mixed media (including of all things, oil pastels and collage) using imagination, flair and ingenuity. The illustrations are vibrant; a feast for the eyes. While tonal values, composition, alignment and other basics are covered, they are presented in an innovative way. No boring lectures here.
The author shows a delightful candour - admitting how hesitant she was when first starting - and even daring to show some of her early works, on which she has since improved. But then she provides creative ways of overcoming problems, including the initial, daunting feeling of confronting a blank piece of paper or canvas. In addition to trouble-shooting, there are numerous ideas for achieving great effects with very simple techniques. Her use of masking tape to create different planes, for example, is very creative.
This is an experienced artist who nevertheless insists there is no 'right' way to create pictures, which is borne out by such headings as "Daring combinations" and "If a picture needs something, feel free to invent it." Whatever medium or style you use, doing some of the experiments and explorations in this book could well give a new lease of life to your paintings, as well as provide inspiration for new works of art.
Risks in Watercolour.......2005-07-30
Our order is due to arrive in a couple of weeks but having seen this book before can certainly review it.
A different approach to watercolour showing the excitement, expansion and beauty of this wonderful medium. The soft edges, disappearing lines are absolutely amazing. Recommend thoroughly - a real book to stimulate.

The Hoop of Peace
ASIN: 0525454136 |
Book Description
Repeated strikes on the drum-like a heartbeat-and an intense, chantlike song draw people near. In the still, stubborn heat of a summer's day, an American Indian man performs a breathtaking dance for an eager audience.
Kevin Locke, who is a member of the Lakota Nation, travels far from his home on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota to perform this difficult and intricate dance for audiences around the world.
For Kevin, the hoop dance is more than a dance; it is a way of keeping Lakota traditions alive. And in the lively photographs and engaging text, the importance of the dance to both Lakota culture and all cultures-as a celebration of the human spirit and a symbol of unity and equality-is rendered compellingly. Readers will learn how Kevin prepares his hoops; what regalia, or outfit, he wears; the names and designs of specific hoop patterns and figures; and the importance of tiospaye, or extended family, to Lakota culture.
With its gorgeous photographs and fascinating narrative, this book is a testament to the enduring message of the American Indian hoop dance-hope for future prosperity and harmony.

Book Description
How to Hepburn, Karen Karbo’s sleek, contemporary reassessment of one of America’s greatest icons, takes us on a spin through the great Kate’s long, eventful life, with an aim toward seeing what we can glean from the First Lady of Cinema. One part How Proust Can Change Your Life and one part Why Sinatra Matters, How to Hepburn teases some unexpected lessons from the life of a woman whose freewheeling, pants-wearing determination redefined the image of the independent woman while eventually endearing her to the world.
This witty, provocative gem is full of no-nonsense Hepburn-style commentary on subjects such as: making denial work for you; the importance of being brash, facing fear, and always having an aviator in your life; learning why and how to lie; the benefits of discretion; making the most of a dysfunctional relationship; and the power of forgiving your parents. Thrilling fans of the notoriously independent actress, award-winner Karen Karbo presents a gusty guidebook to harnessing your inner Hepburn, and living life on your own terms.

A must for Kate-ophiles everywhere.......2007-05-19
I must admit I'm still a few pages away from finishing the book, but I had to write to say that I'm loving every page of it. It seems to read part biography, part love letter from a devoted fan, and part amazing graduate thesis in the way each part of Kate's life is analyzed and seen from a feminist's point of view. I so thoroughly enjoyed Karbo's personal comments, and at times comedic footnotes, that I think the author should take the book on the road and do a one woman homage stand up performance of it. If she did, I would be the first in line to offer any help on it in any way. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars is the lack of any photos that is a must have for Hepburn fans like me, and the fact that it was too short, as I trust I will be sad to come to the ending. Thank you Karen Karbo for a fascinating new look at our never-to-be forgotten Katherine, as well as ourselves.
The Other Hepburn... .......2007-05-08
As someone who wrote a well-received book about Audrey Hepburn ( the much imitated "Audrey Style") a few years ago, I LOVED this book! Ms. Karbo has written a rowdy, glittering, witty peaen to the other Hepburn.
I was not previously familiar with Ms. Karbo's work, but she is a heck of a writer, and really brought the Great Kate back to life for me. By rescuing her from the shrouds of history, she brought her into our current lives and culture. Really, I loved this book -- fast and moving -- a heck of a read. I am giving it to all my friends the Spring.
Thank you -- I really think Katherine Houghton Hepburn would have gotten a huge kick out of this book. And who knows? Maybe Audrey would have too.
Hilarious.......2007-05-07
Karen Karbo has done it again! Kathrine Hepburn is an icon captured beautifully in Karen Karbo's, "How to Hepburn: Lessons in Living from Kate the Great". Less a "self help" book than the name suggests, this incredible page-turner is more a look at the career of the cultural icon that was Kathrine Hepburn and what we can infer from her life and behaviors in these modern times.
The layout of the book both embraces and pokes fun at the modern "self help" book by being broken into lessons, each preceded by a bit of wisdom from Kathrine Hepburn's many, and not shyly given, opinions on how to behave. That Hepburn was impossible on most fronts is a point that Karbo was able to bring home with both her characteristic good humor and elegant style.
If you want to pickup another wonderfully funny read by Karen Karbo, you can not go wrong with this book. Learn how to incorporate such useful tools as denial and self aggrandizement into your everyday self. Learn the value of having an aviator in your life. Find out that, to tie yourself to a married alcoholic and do everything for him is actually liberating! Thank you for another great read Ms. Karbo.
How to cash in on the name "Hepburn".......2007-05-06
Disappointing book in which the author tries too hard to be cute, clever and hip in using Hepburn's life and work to advance her premise.
Along the way she gets facts wrong, doesn't bother to source direct quotes, and uses a lot of re-cycled ideas. She also reveals a real lack of understanding of Hepburn's ability as an artist and makes some comments in regard to Hepburn's work that is laughable.
Bottom-line, I believe that Karbo does admire Hepburn but she also takes some cheap shots at Hepburn with comments for which she has no proof.
Left me with the nagging feeling that the real purpose of this book was to use the name "Hepburn" to make a couple of quick bucks off of a rather insubstantial book.
I find this book absolutely fascinating!.......2007-04-29
I find this book absolutely fascinating!
Karen Karbo has taken the power and wisdom of a legendary woman and created an enchanting manual for us to be `Hepburnized.' Kate has always been an inspiration for me in everyday life, and just the other day I thought someone should write a book about Kate's wit and wisdom. Ta da!! Here it is.....this lovely work I recommend to anyone ready to feel the fear and do it anyway and not to mention learning to find yourself absolutely fascinating!
I want to also say bravo to Karen for calling out William J. Mann and his preposterous "bio" on Kate. Read 'How to Hepburn' and find out what I'm talking about. Karen you are also a woman of substance. Kate would be proud.

"Outstanding....A biography equal to its subject, warm, honest, fascinating."Newsday
With Charles Higham, Katharine Hepburn first authorized a writer to interview her closest friends and colleagues about her career, life, and behind-the-scenes romantic involvements from Leland Hayward to Spencer Tracy. And she herself tells the deeply moving story of her twenty-five-year love affair with Tracy. Here is a vivid portrait of the most elegant, independent, and tempestuous star to grace the screen. Over a half million copies sold.

MY EXPECTATIONS WERE NOT DELIVERED!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-05
I expected to read an interesting story regarding this woman who graced the stage and screen as a dynamic actress over numerous years. However, this novel was indeed boring to me. It had no excitement in it as far as I am concerned and believe me I am an avid reader. I was definitely hoping for more and it did not DELIVER at all for me.
~A Katharine Kind of a Biography~.......2004-07-19
This is a wonderful biography for anyone who want to know everything about Kate. This book focuses a lot on her career and the people she met along the way. After reading this book, I had no idea what kind of a person she was, she was definitely not your average movie star who adored the glamour of Hollywood but a fiesty red-headed women who was charismatic towards whatever she did. A must for any Katharine Hepburn fan or classic movie star fan.

Bridge is the ultimate card game. It is truly a mind sport, as taxing on the brain as a decathlon is to the body. Bridge for Beginners is the ultimate introduction.
Bridge for Beginners starts with the basics, even suggesting that the reader remove the jokers from a full deck of cards. With the basics established, the book progresses, and by the end, the beginning player will be ready to go as far as desired, whether it be to social bridge, club bridge, competitive bridge, or trying out for the national team.
Bridge, and this book, is divided into two parts: the bidding, or auction, and the play of the cards. Each is examined closely, in a step-by-step method that greatly simplifies one of the most complex card games.
Chapters include:
Absolute Beginners -The Game Unveiled - The Scoring - The Shape of the Hand - The Bidding-Positions at the Table - Opening and Responding - Supporting Partner - Competitive Bidding - Conventions - No Trump Contracts - Suit Contracts - Finesses - Etiquette - Scoring-Basic Rules

Secrets for developing leadership and competitive advantage in any organization
The Extraordinary Leader is a research-based book about leadership. It analyzes 200,000 assessments from 20,000 managers and presents new insights that demystify this complex subject. It clearly establishes the importance of developing great leaders versus being satisfied with merely good ones, and highlights the link between leadership behavior and an organization's performance.
From the authors' research, a new model of leadership emerges that challenges long-held beliefs about leadership competencies. The authors identify 16 competencies that tower above all the others-the ones that separate great leaders from the average. One of the book's major breakthroughs is its focus on the importance of maximizing strengths as opposed to merely correcting weaknesses. Further, the importance of balanced strengths is introduced: when strengths are clustered in one area, the leader is less effective than he or she could be with strengths in different areas.
Customer Reviews:
Paradigm-changing leadership model based on research!.......2007-06-08
The authors' research-based leadership model gives great insights into leadership development.
A sensible, paradigm-breaking approach to developing strengths instead of working on weaknesses.
Good secular leadership book.......2006-08-03
Though Zenger and Folkman stated that leadership is developed, they concluded that people must naturally possess basic leadership traits (231). They admit, however, that being born with natural abilities is not enough for one to become a great leader (231). Since one must have natural abilities of leadership first, this last statement seems contrary to their suggestion that people can improve their "leadership outcome" by "deciding to become a great leader" (232).
The authors stressed that strengths, not weaknesses, ought to be improved. Halfway through the book, though, Zenger and Folkman added that "in some cases" improvement of weaknesses was the best place to start (158). They referred to these weaknesses as "fatal flaws," which they claimed led to "failure in leadership" (160). The effects of "fatal flaws" not only affected the individual, but also the leader's subordinates (168). To illustrate this occurrence, they recounted a story of the "tyrannical" vice president who had no interpersonal skills. His inapproachability and his inability to accept ideas from others created subordinates who lacked initiative or creativity. Even under the leadership of a new vice president, these individuals could not recover from the effects of being "smothered" by the previous leader (168).
Zenger and Folkman posed several evaluative questions. For instance, one query asked, "Can people really change?" Others include, "Are people truly valuable? Do people possess latent talents and abilities?" and "Is it worth the organization's investment to help an individual fix a fatal flaw in his or her leadership skills?" (169). This book was not written from an evangelical Christian perspective, and as such, the answer to these questions were oblivious to the fact that people are image bearers of God. The truth is that people are capable of change with God's help (Matt. 19:26). They are also very valuable to Him, in fact, the Bible is clear about people's special place in creation: "What is man that You are mindful of him? ...For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet (Psalm 8:4-6).
People are valuable because they are made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26). Due to the fall, all humans are sinful creatures and in need of redemption (Gen. 3). The expression of an organization's love is its investment to help an individual "fix a fatal flaw" in his or her leadership skill. This love is reminiscent of God's love towards mankind. Just as Christ's death and resurrection offers people a second chance, an organization should offer restoration to an individual.
More so, the bible states, "Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven (Col. 4:1)," and "God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well...If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously... (Romans 12:6-8 NLT)." Becoming a "great leader" encompasses more than working on one's "fatal flaws" or improving personal weaknesses, a great leader is one who has a servant's heart and acknowledges God as the Leader of his or her life (Matthew 20:26; John 3:30; 1 Samuel 16:7).
The authors admitted, "Given our current condition, leadership is still nearly impossible to define or describe in detail or specificity" (9). This statement reflected the limitations of human wisdom. The authors failed in their attempt to educate people on how to turn "good managers into great leaders" because despite the numerous knowledgeable reference sources listed in the Endnotes section of the book, without an understanding of God and the Biblical basis of creation, fall, and redemption, no secular book can ever accurately describe true leadership.
The presupposition that people become leaders when they work on their strengths and study the examples of established leaders was accurate, however the authors left out some very crucial points. First, one must follow the leadership patterns of godly men and women (1 Corinthians 11:1), not of those whom are merely great managers. Second, people should work to excel within their God-gifted abilities (1 Corinthians 12). When these two things are accomplished, the result is truly an extraordinary leader.
The book contains very interesting information........2006-03-24
I bought this book cause it has information useful about competency model, leidership and other human strategy. A have not end it but the pages that i have already read are very interesting.
The only problem that I had was with the handled, I bought 9 pieces and all had damage, the packing was not fitted. Amazon has to take care about it.
Leadership Skills.......2005-09-17
I've managed people for 40 years. Despite it's textbook style, this is the most practical and informative book on leadership I've read. Too bad it wasn't available 4 decades ago.
Best leadership book to start with.......2005-09-02
If you want to learn about leadership start here. This book lays a good foundational understanding of what leadership and management look like. Other leadership books focus more narrowly in comparison. The massive amount of research that this book is based on makes it the best leadership book I've read.
