Book Description
Vintage aprons and modern designs are turning up in movies, magazine spreads, upscale shops, and hip retail venues like Anthropologie, whose trendy line of aprons is selling as fast as they can stock them. The Apron Book is an infectiously enthusiastic guide to aprons, old and new, that are suddenly everywhere.
Aprons take us back to our favorite place¿hearth and home. Vintage aprons help us remember home and family the way they used to be, while bright and sassy contemporary aprons confirm that nesting is all the rage. Actress and trendsetter Julia Roberts has a closetful of vintage aprons. Celebrity custom-made apron auctions have become an annual event for several popular charities in the past few years.
The Apron Book provides full-color photos of new and vintage aprons from the author's collection, patterns for four basic apron styles and myriad variations, recipes, tips on collecting and preserving vintage aprons, and heart-tugging stories from the author's traveling apron exhibit. The book also explores the heyday of aprons and looks at the various roles aprons still play when worn in the kitchen, around the house, by the backyard grill, on the job, and for special occasions.
Warm and inviting¿but like an apron quite practical!¿this book is a celebration of a great American icon and reminds us of what we loved about the people who wore them.
Customer Reviews:
"Apron Heaven".......2007-09-30
Wow! What a delightful book! Not only rich in history and memory, but you are given the instructions to make them come alive in the "now!" This is in the "fave" section of my studio!
Delightful read.......2007-08-31
I found "The Apron Book" book to be absolutely charming and fully engaging. Old enough to remember aprons similar to those represented being worn by family and friends, as well as being an inveterate collector of fabric, this work prompts pleasant memories as it nudges me toward my machine.
The Apron Book: Making, Wearing, and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.......2007-08-23
This book is a good gift, coffee table book, or reference book. It has lots of pictures of authentic vintage patterns, vintage looking aprons, and ideas for color and cloth. The vintage patterns she displays are very usefull and can easily be reinvented with modern commercial patterns.
The patterns she offers are alittle disappointing, especially for children. I was looking for a Mom and kid combo with a bib type pattern. The childs pattern has no bib and was not gathered/sewn to the waiste band but like curtins, gathering as it falls.
There is a "no frills" commercial type pattern for Mom on the back cover and the book gives good details for the patterns she describes in the book.
To me the strenght of her book is in her pictures for ideas, and you can pick up patterns that are exactly like what is pictured in her books commercially. Personally I liked her book, I like idea books with vintage styles. This book can sit on your self until the time you need "inspiration" or a quick apron idea for a gift you want to make.
The Apron Book: Making, Wearing and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.......2007-08-17
Great find!! Such pretty illustrations and wonderful personal 'apron' stories. I loved it from cover to cover. Bought it for a gift but cannot bear to give it away now.
Well photographed book with cute APRON STORIES.......2007-08-13
This is a cute book about aprons. The photos are just marvelous---very bright and colorful!
Each sub-category, in each chapter, comes with a funny or sweet story about the various "special" aprons photographed.
I am giving it a 4-star rather than a 5-star because with over 500+ collectible aprons that the author owns, I wish she had photographed even a small array or "collage-photo", showing more of her pretty aprons. Maybe she could have added a few additional pages to her book, with a combo-photo of more of her aprons.
The author mentions so many interesting aprons that she owns in her collection (but did not show), and so I wanted to see a few more aprons she mentioned throughout the book... (for example: maybe even a photograph or two of a "collage" of just 40 more aprons would have been great).
However, maybe once the author sees how well her first book on aprons is selling right now, she will write a volume #II next time---which I will buy.

Great book! .......2005-08-19
This is the book i learned patternmaking from... its a wonderful guide and teaches you how to really learn the basics of flat patternmaking but gives you the information to take your pattern skills much further! I have looked at other books for flat pattern making and this one is the best, and has detailed illustrations that are helpful as well.
Not what I expected.......2003-03-28
I went back and forth on this one. Bought it to learn how to make a Flat Pattern. Half of this book is on construction of each basic pattern (blouse, skirt, pants etc) with minimal variations. Lots of large drawings, very little text. Not for the person who already knows construction techniques. If I were a beginner in sewing I would need more information on construction than this gives. But good instruction on Flat Pattern making if you want to not use half of the book....
The best book ever written about pattern-making!.......2002-06-14
If you read only one book about pattern-making, make this the one!

Five Stars For Rob, Bucky, And Satchel.......2006-04-17
"Get Fuzzy" is the current reigning champion of comic strips. Anyone with pets (or who loves animals) can appreciate the inter-species conflicts and hilarity in this comic strip (I particularly enjoy Bucky's attempts at world domination and related ventures.) Here, as in years past, some of the best strips have been put together in calendar form to ensure that everyone can have a bit of humor in their daily lives.
I can't imagine not having this calendar in my house; it's always a great way to start the day. Many of these strips are so good that I have cut them out and saved them or sent them to other animal lovers in my life, while the remaining pages become great for scratch paper.
This is a great calendar and I highly recommend it to anyone.
A great way to start the day.......2006-03-22
This is the second year I have used this as my desk calendar at work. I love it. It makes me laugh all the time and it has just enough room to keep track of dinner dates or appointments.

Book Description
You hold in your hands the ultimate trivia guide. Organized in thematic sections,
That Book covers a world of learning by an author whos developed game shows (he was the creator of the first "fastest-finger" game-show quiz) and was one of the original contributors to the international editions of Trivial Pursuit. Want to know which U.S. president is a descendant of King Edward III? Or which famous people lived to read their own obituaries?
That Book covers these inessential facts and more ...
Not since
Schotts Original Miscellany has there been such a delectable feast of useless information.
That Book is an encyclopedia of honest-to-god facts from the bizarre to the mundane that will have you alternately shaking your head in wonder and holding your sides in laughter. Bathroom -- or bedside -- reading just doesnt get any better than this -- or That.
Customer Reviews:
Gee; I didn't know that!.......2007-05-09
This little tome does an excellent job of what it proposes to be.
There is no way to tell exactly how many little facts that you will find in this gem of "useless" information;but there has got to be a thousand or more.. Facts are facts, and information is information;but who is to say what is "useful" and what is "useless"?
There is absolutely no crireria as to what should be included or excluded in a book like this. I guess, the one point that is important ,is that it is a factual bit of informtion. It is a great book for someone who has little or no attention span, someone who loves trivia, someone who likes to throw in a comment when someone else is doing all the talking and thinks they know it all. Absolutely nobody can know everything in the book and it is highly unlikely that anyone would know even 1% of what is contained between its covers.
A check of the Book Stats showed that the book has a Fog Index of 15.2. That is a surprisingly high Index for a book that is so simple to read and understand. I would have guessed it was 4 or 5.
A great little book to leave around for anyone from the age of 7 to 107 to kill a little time. It can be picked up,opened at any page and start reading.
Here's just a sampling of the kind of stuff you'll find here;
"Pricilla Presley became a mother again after becoming a grandmother."
"111,111,111 X 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321"
"Hijinks is the only word with three dotted letters in arow."
"Rod Stewart was a gravedigger before becoming famous."
"Elton John's real name is Reginald Dwight."
"Marilyn Monroe overcame a stammer."
"Tony Curtis served in the U.S. Navy in the Paciic, where he witnessed
the Japanese surrender."
"President George Bush was the U.S. Navy's youngest- ever fighter pilot.
He flew fifty-eight missions and was once shot down and rescued. He won
5 medals."
"Milke Love,Pancho Villa and Zsa Zsa Gabor each married 9 times outdoing Elizabeth Taylor (twice to the sameman),Mickey Rooney,Alan Jay Lerner and Artie Shaw;who each married 8 times."
"The elephant is the only mammal that can't jump;but is the only animal other than humans that can stand on its head.
"The most shoplifted book in the U.S. ...The Bible."
So, there you go, bet 'ya didn't know that;and the book is filled with just such earth shattering info.
Don't believe the others.......2007-04-10
Wow, a lot of these reviews are wrong. I'm not a kid, nor do I want to reveal my name on the internet. This book is so good at, well, "perfectly useless information." If people don't want to know the average person swallows 8 spiders in their lifetime, they don't have to but this book. I couldn't put it down, most of it is about celebrity stuff, but there is a lot of other good info. i got it for $9.99 at borders but this amazon price is unbeatable, buy all 3 and you can almost reach free shipping. They're definitely worth it, I couldn't put it down.
interesting..........2006-06-15
i thougth this book was pretty good, alot of things in it that i didn't know about before, some parts of the book like world wars and star track didn't catch my attention, but just about everything else did.
That book of perfectly inacurate information.......2006-01-25
This book is very interesting- some of the "facts" in this book were unbelievable! It turns out they were just that- untrue, such as...
*If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
*Humans swallow an average of 8 spiders in their lifetime during their sleep.
*The avarage sneeze travels at 600 mph.
I could go on and on... my point is, this book is full of unresearched claims that the author passes on as facts. If you want a book completely full of bull***, get this piece of trash. If you want the facts, get a book that actually at least researches claims before publishing them.
B-O-R-I-N-G Book of Useless Info.......2005-05-22
There are definitely better useless info books out there. This books is totally useless and boring - did not find anything of real interest. I advise purchasing ONLY if you see it at the 99 Cent Store. My 12 bucks was definitely too much for such rubbish.

Making complex issues clear.......2004-12-24
This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.
The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.
Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Book Description
Invented 2500-4000 years ago, the game of Go has enthralled hundreds of millions of people in Asia, where it is an integral part of the culture. In the West, hundreds of thousands have learned of its pleasures, especially after the game appeared in a number of hit movies, TV series, and books, and was included on major Internet game sites. By eliciting the highest powers of rational thought, the game draws players, not just for the thrills of competition, but because they feel it enhances their mental, artistic, and even spiritual lives.
Go! More Than a Game uses the most modern methods of teaching, so that, in a few minutes, anyone can understand the two basic rules that generate the game. The object of Go is surrounding territory, but the problem is that while you are doing this, the opponent may be surrounding you! In a series of exciting teaching games, you will watch as Go's beautiful complexities begin to unfold in intertwining patterns of black and white stones. These games progress from small 9x9 boards to 13x13 and then to the traditional
19x19 size.
Go!: More Than a Game, complete with the history of Go as well as essays on Go in culture, is a wonderful introduction to this ancient game.
Customer Reviews:
Go!.......2006-08-07
After watching the show "Hikaru no Go", i found the game of Go to be quite interesting. This book is very detailed and i enjoyed the history. It is just unfortunate that many people dont know about Go, and i would probably never have a chance to actually play it in the U.S.
Starting Go Players.......2006-07-23
This book contains a wealth of information for the Go player that's just beginning to play. It doesn't pull its punches but it also doesn't go into great depth on a lot of the concepts. There is a reason that most Go books come in series' of 5-6 books, there's just a lot to talk about.
If you're looking to start grab this book or just find a club in your area. There is a certain use for literature at the beginner level but playing one game a week with a shodan would take you much further than this book could ever hope.
Not a laundry list.......2005-06-01
I was disappointed to read the last comment since I know the author and what he was trying to do and, as a go teacher, have seen his technique work on many people. As he stated on the first page ("How to Use This Book"), he was not trying to write a book that would just be thrown away after its contents were learned. That is for laundry list books and there are several hundred of them available in English for various stages of one's go career. What he wanted to do was to introduce readers to the dynamics of go playing--go is a game, after all, and not a course in school. What he advised the reader to do was to go as far as possible through the games in the book until they were stuck, then play alot (and, yes, also look at the laundry list books!), then come back, play some more and etc. That way, say over a period of time (and not just with one reading, as it looks like some commentators have done), one would get the feel for playing on, first simple 9 x 9 boards, then 13 x 13 and finally the full, complex, 19 x 19 size. By the time one finished, one would be completely conversant with any go player, and know much of go's 4,000 year-old culture and history. That doesn't mean you would *know* all of the techniques--only by playing and studying can you do that--but you would *know about* most of them and, you would also know what you *didn't know* and needed to. In other words, because of the immense amount of ground and the different levels it covers, the book is meant to be a launching pad into the world of go, and that it does admirably and certainly far better than any other beginner's book!
Not too clear; good history of the game though.......2005-02-19
As a new Go player, I read this book hoping it would help me figure out what I was supposed to be doing. It covers the basics of the game but I found it not that clear or systematic. I had to pick up another book to really get a grasp of some of the basic strategies, and how to put them together.
The history of the game section, which takes up 1/3 or so of the book on the other hand, was very well written and quite engaging.
In short, if you want to learn basic strategy, there are many better books out there.
Lots of Taoist mysticism and a fair introduction to Go.......2004-12-20
There are two games of Go, the forest-and-trees welter of confusion that a beginner sees, and the game within the game that everyone else comes to terms with. Shotwell's book can bring you past the boulders of confusion and leave you standing beside the deep water. Whether you swim or not... :) He's also a geisha, in the well-known Reischauer/Culture of Japan academic style, so much of the book is full of reverent Taoist and Kung Fu mysticism which may be fun, but should be transcended as soon as you "see" the inner game. It's beside the point. Bottom line, I like this book. It nudged my game forward. That said, if you want to learn Go, you should get a good computer Go game, like Go4++ (Windows, commercial) or Sente Goban (Mac OS X, freeware), dumb it down and play until you win. Then come back to this book. There's a lot of satisfaction in that first win against a computer, and it helps the book make sense.
Customer Reviews:
Odd, yet incrediubly useful reference.......2007-10-01
When you are lacking inspiration for detailing the successes or failures of your direct reports this handy reference book provides a vast library of useful phrases that can be used on performance appraisals. The phrases are nicely organised into key competencies with 3 levels (exceeds, meets, does not meet) of grading. Each competency also has listed a number of key verbs and nouns.
Although it can be argued that this type of book can devalue the feedback given in performance reviews, it can also help to prevent the reviewer from writer's block and falling back onto a few stock phrases.
The biggest criticism I have is that the book does not contain a concise index to all of the competencies. You have to browse the whole book to discover and find specific competencies.
Above average.......2006-03-04
Compared to some similar books I have read, this book has better phases to use on performance reviews along with key verbs and nouns for each "area" of an employee's review. When choosing a rating for an employee in a specific area it also helped to review the statements described in the book to have a consistent measure to judge performance.
