Customer Reviews:
This is a good book.......2005-08-11
This is a good book but note the title - "The Armourer and His Craft" ... the title is NOT "How to Craft Armour From the XIth to the XVIth Century" - I think a lot of people here got the wrong idea and were disappointed.
As an insight into the armourer though, it is very interesting.
Ffoulkes - Armourer and his Craft.......2003-12-04
More of a historical record - with reprints of armour related period text, invoices, and treaties. A few photos of armour and period engravings. An interesting read for the armour historian - not a 'how to' or 'techniques' text.
Good Resource on Armour.......2001-12-09
I don't mind the fact that this book is a little dated. I enjoyed the descriptions and illustrations and learned a few things that I hadn't known already. Although ffoulkes is a little biased about the types of armour he prefers, he none the less presents information and construction elements that apply to all harnesses. There are references in french that aren't translated, and several erroneous footnotes that are untraceable and confusing. Besides it's downfalls, there are excellent points to the book: easy to read, easy to follow, and full of tidbits you'll be pleased to rediscover when you pick it up for a second or third time. It is definately worth the inexpensive price, and should be on the reference shelf of armour enthusiasts.
Obviously, it's a historical book..........2001-05-02
It's clearly specified in the title. This book provides an interesting look into the art of armor construction and also into the lives of the armorers and the people who hired them. The book is written in a simple but informative style.
Although the book is old (original edition is from 1912), the text is concise and clear. The pictures and illustrations (which are most medieval drawings) are very nice.
A very intersting read.
All history!.......2000-06-27
The books main focus is the history of armor. If you are looking for a guide on how to make armor this is not the resource you want.

Book Description
You never know who you'll bump into at a diner at night.
It could be a rat with an anger-management problem. Or an overly sentimental pig. Or a zebra with a story or two to tell about a crocodile. Or even a goat who just wants to be left alone.
Welcome to Nighthogs, where the door is always open, the light is always on, and the coffee is as scorching as the humor.
In this third collection of the immensely popular Pearls Before Swine, Stephan Pastis again takes us into the world of Rat, Pig, Zebra, and Goat, and he shows once more just how outrageous-and how hilarious-the unpredictable can be. Always surprising (and only occasionally depraved), Pearls Before Swine is one of the sharpest comic strips in newspapers today.
So pull up a stool, have a cup of joe, and enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
What a hoot........2007-07-10
Pastis is a genius. When I need a lift, I just open to any page and read until I can't stop laughing.
I love it--terrible puns delivered by poorly drawn cartoon animals.......2005-12-28
This is a bizarre little cartoon with a great warped sense of humor. One warning; if you don't like puns and word play, this isn't for you, because this book has some of the worst puns I've ever read. Very clever.
The two main characters are Rat and Pig. Pig is sweet, naive and more than a little stupid. Rat on the other hand smokes, drinks and is arrogant as well as slightly psychotic. Other characters pop up like Zebra who has had numerous friends and relatives eaten by lions. These animals go to work and go out on dates, and make political and social statements that only cartoon animals can get away with. Pearls Before Swine is along the same lines as Bloom County and Far Side. It's not at that level yet, but is well on its way.
omg omg omg its awesome.......2005-11-26
This is the only good comic out there. I was getting older and i realized that garfield was really dry and then i discovered pearls. This is the best comic book ever! omg omg omg
The refrigerator of doom.......2005-08-16
I guess this is the best series of this book, in particular. But is really hard to state that, the whole book is a masterpiece... Very funny!
I hope the next book will have zeeba neighba.
Not your average collection........2005-08-04
Pastis is a genius even if he is a lawyer. Not since Calvin n Hobbes have I laughed as much at a comic strip. I hope to see Pearls continue to invade Cathy, Family Circus etc. This strip is a nice break from the insanity called life.
Book Description
Few spiritual practices are more intriguing or elusive than those of Zen Judaism,” says David M. Bader in the foreword to
Zen Judaism. “This growing movement offers a unique way to follow in the footsteps of the Buddha, ideally without gaining quite so much weight.” These nearly 100 sacred teachings are capable “of bringing about an enlightenment experience so pure, so elevating, and so intense, you could plotz.”
For you, some samples:
To know the Buddha is the highest attainment. Second highest is to go to the same doctor as the Buddha.
Be here now. Be someplace else later. Is that so complicated?
There is no escaping Karma. In a previous life, you never called, you never wrote, you never visited. And whose fault was that?
If there is no self, whose arthritis is this?
Be patient and achieve all things. Be impatient and achieve all things faster.
Customer Reviews:
Zen Judaism -- Who knew?.......2007-04-07
If other goyim like myself don't go right out and buy this book, it would be such a Schande. Funny? Oy! You don't know from humor till you read this. So buy and read already.
Nirvana schmirvana, as long as you're enlightened!
Entertaining.......2007-01-23
The book succeeds at it's intention - getting a half hour of laughs at innate Judaism within backdrop of Zen Buddhist sayings.
For example:
- "Enlightenment is a sudden wordless understanding. Stop telling everyone already"
- "Seek not the outer enticements. Dwell not in the inner strife. Try to find a nice place in the suburbs with good schools."
Most of the humor appeals directly to members of the tribe.
And please don't confuse this book with one of the same title that is a more serious attempt at linking the Kaballah with Buddha.
You Mean Like These?.......2006-10-04
You should read this book. Yes, you. You know who I mean. YOU.
;-)
Now I know where the Jewish Zen e-mails come from.......2005-06-08
Ever get a message called "Jewish Zen" with lines like "If there is no self, whose arthritis is this?" or "Wherever you go, there you are. Your luggage is another story." They're all taken from this book. It's a lovely little item, which I highly recommend.
Excellent, but only in spots........2005-05-28
Overall, I was disappointed with this book. The book was too short, and even then seemed to have been padded. About 1/3 of the sayings were great, but the others should have been replaced by much better ones.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the layperson but an excellent study.......2003-02-15
If you are the average person looking for a book about Romans in the movies, this book is most likely going to give you a headache because it is focusing on tracing large trends in how Italian and American movies have used Rome for variety social and political agendas. At times there is real oppositions, an Italian movie arguing for a fascist state while during the same period an American movies makes a pro-democracy film -- both movies are based on the same book, the same historical events, or the same legend. All of that changes as society and politics changes in both the USA and Italy. Maria Wyke tackles a huge amount of material and traces these changes over more than a century. I'm certain it wasn't easy to research and write and it isn't a quick read, not even for a scholar of the ancient world or film.
Roman Cinema.......2002-05-03
This book, by Maria Wyke, examines the plethora of films with Roman themes made since the early history of cinema. Her thesis is that these films contain numerous connections with real events around the time they were made. She looks at two types of films: Italian cinema and American cinema. The book is divided into four sections: films about Spartacus, Cleopatra, Nero and Pompeii.
For Italian films, most use the historical figures and places as either a means to represent and promote Italian unification and nationalism, or fascism under Il Duce, that merry prankster who considered a military victory over Ethiopia a major event. Many of the films borrowed events from paintings and novels to create a connection to higher art and thus present themselves in the same league as opera and the like. American films embrace consumerism (what a surprising revelation) as well as victory over Communism and Christian values. The Taylor-Burton version of Cleopatra, Wyke observes, shows a mirroring between the real Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor's personal life. By the time of the late 1960's, the film image of Rome changed. The example Wyke gives is Fellini's Satyricon, which focuses more on the mystique of the ancient world.
Is this a good book? It's not too bad, but film is so subjective that I wonder about some of her interpretations. I also wonder how many people in the audience would pick up on some of the more obscure references Wyke thinks the movies contain. That films reflect certain views is beyond dispute. Just watch any of the films today that try and show the greatness of multiculturalism or any of the other touchy-feely liberal values we're all supposed to think are so great. Only read this book if you are really interested in old films and political/social messages in media.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful, fun to look at to improve your game.......2004-01-22
This is a good strategy guide, it really helps your game once you get into the tougher missions by helping you to find things you most likely would have never found without looking at this. I give it 4 stars because it would have been really worth the buy if it was in color, its hard to see the pictures, but aside from that, its a great guide for only 10 bucks. Really good to have if your new to the game and havent beaten the campaign yet.
Good Single Player Guide.......2003-11-02
This guide is excellent for getting through the single player campaign missions. The information about each race and their units is very detailed. It helped me through some tuff spots in the game and showed me more I can do than what I already knew. The only downside is the lack of multiplayer tips and tricks.
Unneeded, but excellent nonetheless.......2003-01-19
Grading just on the basis of a guide, this book would have received 5 stars easily. The failing in this case is not in the guide, but in the game: Warcraft III is not sufficiently difficult to justify spending hard-earned money on a strategy guide. There are certain missions that one may get stuck on, but after trying again once or twice, most players should be able to figure out each mission's 'trick' strategy and beat it with relative ease. This applies even to hard mode, which, with the exception of a few missions late into the third and fourth campaigns, is not very hard at all.
That said, this guide is a walkthrough, in every sense of the word. It tells you what structures/units are available (and, most importantly, which ones you should use), shows you the entire map from overhead complete with a suggested path to follow, and what pitfalls need avoiding on a certain missions. After I had beaten the game several times on my own, taking a look through the walkthrough I noticed several ingenious strategies or shortcuts that I had never thought of that would have saved me a few hours of aggravation. And of course, it gives you a fairly good summary of unit tactics and general strategy, such as scouting, creeping, etc. to use on Battle.net. Like most guides, however, this one is not designed to make you the perfect B.net player, so most of the in-depth strategy and tactics must be gleaned from websites such as warcraftiii.net
It is an excellent guide, so if you have the money to spare and need a quick way out of that inanely annoying mission you're replaying for the 30th time, this is a good buy. But if you can stand a little trial and error, I doubt you'll need help to the degree to which this book offers it.
My husband loves it!.......2003-01-14
Bought this for my husband for Christmas. I couldn't believe how nice the graphics and color were. I personally can't stand these games because they take so long to play (it's solitaire and Mah Jongg for me), but my husband called me over just to look at it, and it's pretty neat. Guess I won't be seeing him for another 6 months while he plays it...
Quality content, if you need it........2003-01-09
Overall I would say the book is very complete. I have found very little about Warcraft III that was not answered in this book. This book has two parts.
The first part is the game play detail. This part provides details such as damage, armor, range, hit points for every unit and building; a "tech tree" for each race; and details about the special abilities of the heros. This part is essential for any serious player.
The second part is a pure spoiler for the single player missions. It gives every detail about the missions including: items, enemies, power ups, and tactical strategies. This part would be most useful to younger players or those who are new to strategy games.
I personally do not enjoy the single player game nearly so much as the multi-player game. I have owned the game for 6 months now, and have not-yet finished the single player game. Conversly, I have played over 200 online games.
I would recommend this Strategy guide to two types of people: those who are serious about developing a winning strategy (using the first part of the book), and those who are new to strategy games and may have trouble completing the single player missions (who would use the second part of the book).

Customer Reviews:
successful manager's review.......2006-07-16
i gave this book 3 stars because of the size. although, it is very helpful in many ways, i feel that the writers of this book could have condensed a bit more. other than the size i feel some of the page space was wasted on repetition. that is basically it.
Good Reference manual, not textbook.......2006-03-28
First of all, as the name indicates, this book is a handbook. Merriam Webster defines a handbook as "a concise reference book; manual"
For a manual, I have to give this book high marks - it covers a whole gamut of topics / competencies - enough to assist those who consciously want to improve their professional and leadership skills. The language is easy to understand. The only prerequisite is to be in a work-place for a few years so as to appreciate each competency.
Pros:
(1) Compendium of competencies. Most likely, nothing has been missed!
(2) A person who is keen on gaining skill in a particular competency such as "Manage Change" or "Establish Trust" can quickly gather insights into what behaviors and skills he/she must practice or develop.
(3) Easy to understand.
Cons:
(1) No pictures or maps or schematics shown.
(2) No case studies or examples presented.
(3) Not concise. For example, there are 28 chapters in the seventh edition (2004). At a high level, one should be able to identify less than ten key competencies, with each having additional sub-topics. For example, it is easier on the reader to have one chapter on "Foster open Communication" with sub sections of "Write effectively", "Listen attentively", "speak with Impact", etc. rather than have a chapter each. A person solely relying on this book will have difficulty summarizing key leadership qualities. (Imagine organizing 28 chapters in the mind!).
(4) Systematic methodology for skill development not presented.
All this makes for dry reading. But then, if you look upon this book as a reference manual and not as a textbook, you might develop some compassion for the authors!
Here is how I used this book:
(1) Start a personal development plan (consult web, books or leader).
(2) Understand the competencies required for your profession.
(3) Self-assess on the competencies, assigning a skill level of "Development," "Working," or "Advanced".
(4) Have a competent leader who knows you (e.g. your manager) assess your skills. Compare notes.
(5) Pick the top 2-3 competencies where improvement is needed.
(6) Refer to those chapters in this book which correspond to these identified competencies.
(7) Summarize these chapters in your own words as you develop insights.
(8) Periodically look up summary and use these techniques during your waking hours - home or work - until they are internalized.
(9) Repeat this exercise once in 2-3 years.
In summary, this book is a good reference manual for improving one's professional skills, but should not be used as a text book.
Outstanding Reference Tool.......2006-03-03
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (3/06)
This book is an outstanding reference tool for supervisors, managers, and executives. As a long time manager who dealt with organizational issues, growth, personnel matters, finance, and political influences, and one who teaches undergraduate and graduate school courses in management and leadership, I have experienced most of these issues. The author has done a remarkable job in the detail and accuracy of the work. The work is clear and understandable and organized in such as way as to allow easy access to information. To find such a compendium of information in one book instead of many is an additional benefit. Content is also ratified by the collective skills sets the authors bring.
I highly recommend this book as a desk reference for anyone in a leadership or management role, and highly recommend it for anyone aspiring to the job. The comprehensive nature of the material in the book provides the foundation for new managers. In addition, the reference material leads readers to many other sources, reducing the need for Internet surfing trying to find information, or visiting the local library. As a graduate school faculty member I would also state for the record that this would be a great textbook. The book is written by practitioners who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. This book is a must read. Well done to all the authors - you have provided a book any manager, supervisor, or teacher should have.

Excellent content, very dry style.......2006-01-20
The content of the book is excellent. The authors have created a compendium of the knowledge and behaviors needed for a manager to be successful. One would be hard-pressed to find this much of content in one volume, at the price this book is sold at.
The bad news is that all of the content is in endless streams of paragraphs or bullet points. The total absence of a change in pace (no anecdotes, case studies, sidebars, pictures) makes this a very dry read. The book could be significantly enlivened by the addition of more diagrams that visually illustrate the principles being described.
To make the best use of this material, learn to Mind Map (see Buzan's The Mind Mapping book). As you read through the material, distill the content into mind maps. Continually refer to those mind maps as you practice the behaviors suggested by the authors.
In summary, the content is first-rate, the presentation is lacking.
