Great entertainment, but non-existent scholarship.......2001-07-16

This is an excellent cross-selection of international erotic artwork. Although pieces from Western civilization are more heavily-weighted, there are still plenty of sculptures/paintings from Asia, South America, and Africa. The time range runs the gamut from thousands of years ago to modern art. The pieces are chosen well, and the colour reproduction is admirable.

Do not expect a meticulously-researched book, though. I don't have a terrific knowledge of general art history, but I do know a bit more about ancient Greek art than the average person. Although the vital statistics are available for each of the pieces shown in the book, the write-ups are occasionally filled with pure conjecture. For example, some of the Greek red-figure artwork is described rather wishfully. One piece, showing an orgy scene, is described as a scene involving men and hetairai (high-class courtesans) at a symposium. In actuality, these women are probably lowly prostitutes, as evidenced by the coarseness of their features and heavyset bodies. Hetairai are depicted as being more refined and beautiful than these particular women.

Another red-figure piece is featured, showing a man and a young woman having sex outdoors. Dr. Westheimer writes, "If he is a considerate lover ... he will turn her around and bring her to orgasm with cunnilingus." Although cunnilingus may have been practiced, it is not represented in ancient Greek art or mentioned in Greek literature. In fact, the Greeks didn't even have a word for it. Since ancient Greece was a very sexist society, and generally speaking, women did not have any rights, I think it's highly unlikely the woman in the red-figure cup ever did receive any sort of oral nookie.

Although I believe Dr. Westheimer makes incorrect assumptions about some of the artwork, her artistic interpretations aren't the purpose of the book. The purpose is to offer light entertainment and to provide artistically-motivated lessons in seduction, a goal she achieves quite well.

Too Obvious.......2000-05-20

Of course I saw this book in a bookstore. I bought it. I read it. I believe it. I don't care if Dr. Ruth is a real doctor. I have to believe that Egon Schiele actually saw everything he painted or drew, even if it was only in his dreams. Am I reading this right?

Excellent "how to" book for all fiction writers, not just erotica writers.......2006-01-01

The title is in some ways misleading, as "Elements of Arousal" is one of the best books on writing fiction I've ever read, regardless of genre. Yes, it's an excellent "how to" for writing gay men's erotica, but it's also a superb course on both the craft and business of fiction writing in general. It won't suit everyone, as the writing examples used are very explicit erotica, but on the other hand the examples used are certainly memorable, and Eighner uses them to great effect in teaching various aspects of the craft of writing.

Even this revised edition is now over a decade old, and some parts of the section about the business side of writing are now seriously outdated, but it's still a useful guide to practical aspects of selling one's work. The book is currently out of print, but is readily available second-hand and in an a web version, and is well worth tracking down.

However, the final analysis revealed that it was the arousal-vigilance interaction That had the greatest impact on correct detection and productivity.

Berserk Volume 10 Great Read!.......2006-08-18

Berserk Volume 10 is simply amazing. The drawings and the storyline is just so epic, and even better than the anime (although the anime is just one of the best I've ever seen!). Guts, Casca, and the remaining Band of the Hawk spring their severly mentally and physically tortured leader, Griffith from the clutches of the depraved king. There are several differences from the manga: (1) The king of Midland, is shown as some sort of molester; (2) The princess of Midland follows Guts' rescue team to spring Griffith from prison; and (3) The King of Midland sends a group of assassins after the rescuing party. What I personally like the most of Volume 10 is in the beginning, where Guts reveals to Caska his plans for the future. He talks about his realization of who he is and what he wants to do, which (I believe) is what we all strive for.

Greetings all,well I bought this like many who after seeing the end results of the anime series. Wanting to know what happens,I purchased this so this is my first manga ever!and it wont be my last, the artwork is detailed and very much resebles the show probably a bit better lookin in some respects...But none the less its a great series to collect since april seems so far away.

Volume 10 has arrived, and we are hungry for some more!

This book touches on events prior to the Eclipse. More details on known characters are presented and new characters are introduced. Even if you got the chance to watch the Anime, reading the Manga gives a more in depht understanding of the characters, and other crucial details that were ommitted in the Anime.

Kentaro Miura's drawings are fascinating as much as they are revealing of the aspects of human nature. This volume is no exception.

Again, pain reminds us of our existence. It feeds the inner beast growling in our subconscious...

The Band of the Hawk is back.......2006-02-09

IT DOES CONTAIN SOME GOOD STORIES AND FACTS BUT OVERALL JUST READ A MAGAZINE OR A GOSSIP TABLIOD AND YOU WILL FIND THE SAME INFO. A story well told, a book worth reading.......2003-03-11

Before reading Introducing Halle Berry all I really knew about her was that she won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 and that she is one of the most beautiful actress in Hollywood right now. The book tells her story, from struggling with diabetes to begging Spike Lee for a part as a crackhead in one of his films. Christopher Farley touches upon very interesting topics, not only about Halle, but he also looks at the bigger picture. He touches on black actors in Hollywood, or lack thereof. I am a huge Spike Lee fan and there were very interesting tidbits about Spike which I never knew and I was mezmorized reading about. The book also gives a true account of Hollywood and how Halle Berry really paved her own way. Just because she is so stunning it seems as though she had it easy, but that is simply not true. She is a wonderful person and I really enjoyed reading about her life. The book is a fast read and I feel more knowledgable about Hollywood, Halle, and the history of Hollywood after reading this book. I recommend this book to everyone.

In the introduction, it is stated: "no-limit cash games are seen relatively rarely these days". Really? Why are so many of the book's examples from actual no limit games?

The format is making decisions step by step playing 58 hands. Then you compare your choices against the answers.

The first example hand is played without looking at your pocket cards. In the answer it is stated that you must make sure no one knows you are raising blind. Can you use this advice?

Most of the answers are not explained sufficiently. Usually, when I got a "wrong" answer, the book answer did not help me understand.

If you are learning, advoid this book; it will frustrate you.

Instructional and entertaining.......2005-12-16

The main thing this book has going for it is its format. Reuben describes a hand and a situation and then quizzes you on each part of playing that hand. He tells you what he or the player he is following, did. Then, at the end, he tells you what mathematically correct strategy would be. Reuben does not always max out the score with his own actions and when he errs, it tends to be toward the more aggressive play.

The correct answer has nothing to do with whether or not you win the hand.

Reuben's writing is humorous and entertaining. Comments such as "A perfect score. You are not welcome at our table." He does use "gay" as an adjective far too often and that is irritating, but I can live with it. Most Americans think most Brits are gay, anyway, except for tough guys like Sean Connery and Margaret Thatcher. It is a sophmoric term for an adult of a reasonable age. I have never met a raise that wanted a civil union.

The drawbacks of this technique occur when the correct strategy is to fold, yet the quiz goes on. If I folded before the flop, I don't have much of a decision on the river.

Still, the few nit picking things aside, a truly enjoyable book. And the Royal Vegas cds on the back inside cover make nice frisbees.

Rock Solid Instruction. .......2005-08-14

Even before I started writing reviews for Amazon, I was always a customer who made use of the review section. This was particularly true in regards to poker books because I assumed that the raters had the same goal, getting better, that I did. For this book, I read the insights of the two reviewers below, and made the call. My interest in studying Pot-Limit stems from playing the $10.00 table at a popular website. I wondered if there were some tips I could absorb which would give me an advantage over the other No Limit players at the PL table.

I have to say that I was taken aback when I first opened "How Good Is..." because it looked kind of like a workbook with check in boxes and little quizzes for each hand. Then I saw that the free CD actually was the download disk for Royal Vegas poker, which, in my mind, is an awful site. So, with some trepidation, I began to read this one, and must admit to being pleasantly surprised by the advice it contained. American readers should not be put off by the fact that some of the pot values are represented in English pounds because, you'll soon realize, that the exact amounts have little to do with the functionality of the instruction.

Stewart Reuben is a retired professional, and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He has a engaging personality and is an enjoyable narrator. Inside, he offers up 58 hands for analysis. Over the course of them, many mentions are made of his old poker pals and famous players like Jack Keller or Devilfish Ulliot. Personally, I did not take the quizzes as I went along but I read a couple of the hands twice after recognizing the way in which I mishandled similar scenarios at the table. Lastly, there's a chart on page 9 that shows hand rankings which was so good I forever marred my copy by tearing it out and placing it alongside my computer monitor as a guide.

How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Hold'em? is a handy and straightforward guide to Pot-limit hold'em, a poker variant characterized by big bets that can spring out of nowhere, as well as opportunities for bold bluffs and counter-bluffs, which has become wildly popular from coast to coast in recent decades. Written by an experienced pot-limit player, How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Hold'em? offers not only basic introductory and "how-to" play instructions, but also advanced concepts and strategies for various hands, and some complex math to better gauge one's odds during play. Excellent Book!.......2004-06-05

This is the best hand examples book I've read on big bet holdem. It's leaps and bounds better than, "Championship Tournament Practice Hands" by McEvoy and Cloutier. Unlike most others, this book puts you in all kinds of difficult situations and really forces you to think hard about the correct move. This book also plays all the way through each hand, and it often throws solid curve balls at you on the turn and river. The answers and comments are very good. This book rocks!

The breadth of Drucker's knowledge and insights never cease to amaze me, and goes to reinforce my perception - as well as that of many others - that he is, in fact, "the founding father of the science of management." That's the reason I quoted him seven times - on seven different management topics - in by book, The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit & Growth The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit and Growth.

The essence of The Effective Executive is this: not too long ago, the business community was essentially engaged in manufacturing where the need was for efficiency - the ability to do things right.

As our business world evolved into service and science-oriented enterprises, employees became "knowledge workers" as opposed to "manual workers." Thus, a whole new set of executive qualifications were required - the key one being effectiveness - the ability to get the right things done.

He goes on to point out that intelligence, knowledge and imagination are common in most executives, and they were the primary qualities needed when our business world was engaged in manufacturing and manual workers. However, with the emergence of the service/science-oriented business world and the knowledge worker, these same qualities appear to have little correlation with an executive's effectiveness. Today's business world needs executives who can get the right things done.

This is a fantastic book. It is written in an old-school style that is somewhat hard to get through.....but the messages are very clear. This book totally changes the way you think about your role in an organization - regardless of your rank or profession. It's definitely a book you should read at least twice.
