Book Description
The Imagery of Chess Revisited recovers a celebrated and extraordinary moment in art history: the 1944-45 exhibition The Imagery of Chess, held at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City. The exhibit was a legend in its own time and has been considered a singular event in the history of art exhibitions ever since. The show's organizersthe influential art dealer Julien Levy, the Surrealist painter Max Ernst, and Dada leader Marcel Duchamp, himself a serious chess playerinvited a virtual "who's who" of artists and members of the cultural avant-garde to redesign the standard chess set or otherwise explore chess imagery and its symbolism in bold new ways. Participants included famous European expatriates and soon-to-be famous American modernists: André Breton, Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Ernst, Man Ray, Isamu Noguchi, and Yves Tanguy are among those who contributed chess sets; John Cage and Vittorio Rieti created original musical scores; and Dorothea Tanning, Arshile Gorky, David Hare, Man Ray, Matta, Robert Motherwell, and others produced pivotal chess-related paintings, sculptures, and photographic works.
Featuring new color photographs as well as rarely seen archival images, recollections by participants and their descendants, and period reviews, The Imagery of Chess Revisited includes previously unpublished works. Among them are André Breton and Nicolas Calas's wine-glass chess set and Alexander Calder's chess set made of found materials, in addition to thirty-five of Calder's chess-related drawings. An essay by Larry List explores the chess designs as visual objects and pivotal creations in the context of participating artists' lives and work. Lowell Cross and Paul B. Franklin examine the two musical scores included in the show; and Ingrid Schaffner provides an introduction to the art-world milieu in which The Imagery of Chess took place. 50 illustrations in color, 80 in black and white.

Will prove of special interest to collectors, artists and gamers alike........2007-01-07
At once an art history title and a special source of interest to chess players, THE IMAGERY OF CHESS REVISITED is an outstanding survey of the 1944-45 exhibition of the same name held in New York City, which hosted participants from famous European expatriates and American modernists alike. All contributed chess sets for the project and exhibition, and many produced other chess-related art, from paintings to photos. The IMAGERY OF CHESS REVISITED project grew out of a project to create an exact replica of Isamu Noguchi's 'lost' red and green plastic chess set designed for the original exhibition, and holds numerous previously unpublished works and images which will prove of special interest to collectors, artists and gamers alike.

Book Description
Calvin and Hobbes are ready to pounce back on bestseller lists everywhere with this all-new collection of daily and color Sunday cartoons. Reprising the wide-open landscape format of last year's collection, The Days Are Just Packed, Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat chronicles another segment of the multifarious adventures of this wild child and his faithful, but skeptical, friend. If the best cartoons compel readers to identify themselves within the funny frames, then all who enjoy Calvin and Hobbes are creative, imaginative, and ... bad, bad, bad! Calvin, the irascible little boy with the stuffed tiger who comes to life are a pair bound for trouble. Boring school lessons become occasions for death-defying alien air battles, speeding snow sled descents elecit philosophical discussions on the meaning of life, and Hobbe's natural inclination to pounce on his little friend wreaks havoc on Calvin's sense of security. Calvin's the kid we all wish we'd been. Sassy, imaginative, far more verbal than his parents can manage, Calvin is the quintessential bad boy - and the boy we love to see. He terrorizes little Susie, offers "Candid Opinions" from a neighborhood stand, and questions his parents' authority. "What assurance do I have that your parenting isn't screwing me up?" he demands. Calvin and Hobbes manages to say what needs to be said about childhood and life: "Eww, mud," says Calvin. "Look at this gooshy, dirty, slimy, thick, wet mud... Bleecch... Talk about a kid magnet!" Created by Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes has quickly become a favorite in more than 2,300 daily and Sunday newspapers. Recent readership polls show the strip as No. 1 in the Kansas City Star, Salt Lake City Deseret News, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dallas Morning News, Akron Beacon Journal, and Schedectady Daily Gazette.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The title alludes to the four legged part of this classically funny duo. The thing that causes Hobbes, Calvin's tiger, the most joy, is pouncing on, and scaring the crap out of, his owner. Calvin is a willing participant, most of the time going along with it for the thrill. A lot of satire and insightful observation delivered along with the clowning, here.
Typical Calvin.......2007-05-27
This collection takes place mostly in winter/spring/summer and is not themed (as you would think) along the lines of Hobbes "pouncing" which made me hesitate to purchase it at first because I wasn't that keen on all that pouncing. If you are into that aspect of C&H, however, you can get the C&H Lazy Sunday Book Collection. This one DOES however contain a lot of his priceless snowman sculptures which I AB-SO-LOUTELY LOVE, a great deal of interation with Susie, and escapades in Miss Wormwood's class. 5 *s for another fantastic collection!
Do NOT read before bedtime. Depressing!.......2006-12-13
An only, lonely child. Bullied at school. Clearly a genius level intellect, he's unchallenged and stifled since nobody, not his parents, and not even his teacher, recognizes this. A father who's always too busy to spend any time with his son. A father who's often seen, get this, reading --*reading* -- rather than paying his only son some attention! A mother, who literally, in strip after strip, throws him out the door. Throws, as in "child flying through the air". A child, and a small child at that, allowed repeatedly to wander alone through the woods! A child denied even a pet. His only friend -- a stuffed tiger.
Makes the "Peanuts" look like "The Family Circus".
Classic Calvin and Hobbes.......2006-10-19
This collection has a few of my favorites in it (especially the girls/bugs analogy - priceless!) Great for any age - I read C&H starting around age 7 and I still read it today! I enjoy it just as much, though I see it from a unique perspective now. Every kid should grow up with this.
Stupendous Man!.......2006-08-18
This is probably the best calvin hobbes book that Bill Watterson wrote. With plenty of funny stories about the duo. I think is a must have for every single calvin and hobbes fan. If you don't already have it, Buy it today

Just a Little Twisted.......2006-09-09
This collection of Calvin and Hobbes strips is just a bit more twisted than many of the other Calvin and Hobbes collections. The very first strip in the book sets the tone. In the middle of the night Calvin wakes up and says he's thirsty. Calvin then goes for a drink of water. Hobbes jumps off the bed and pounces on Calvin as he makes his way back to bed. He parents find him in the hall with Hobbes on top of him, mumbling "homicidal psycho jungle cat."
While the opening strip is humorous, there are even better strips. Another of my favorites is one of Calvin's infamous "show and tell" strips. Calvin says he has nothing for show and tell, but he tells everyone that during the daytime his mom puts on a patriotic leotard, a cape and knee-high, high-heeled boots to fight crime. The teacher sends a note home with Calvin that his parent's look over together. His father's comment? "Wow, show me that outfit sometime."
The breadth of strips is consistent with other Calvin and Hobbes books, but for some reason these strips gave me more laughs than many of my other Calvin and Hobbes Books. However, the funniest strips often seem to be the cruelest. For example, Suzy follows a series of signs regarding an "important message," ending in a sign that says, "Important message: Look Out!" We then see Calvin sitting on a branch dropping a snowball, saying, "It's like shooting fish in a barrel."
I enjoy Calvin and Hobbes a lot. Of all the illustrated books I have, Calvin and Hobbes are among the funniest, and the most consistent. This particular collection is particularly funny, though a bit more bizarre than many of the other collections. However, it is the twisted nature of some of the strips that make them so interesting and funny. If you are a Calvin and Hobbes fan or just looking for a smile, here is an excellent book.

The World's Wackiest Inventions.......2007-08-16
The World's Wackiest Inventions was a book I used in a course I taught this summer to teachers. I wanted to show that not all ideas are really valuable for broad consumer use. Some of these inventions were totally unrealistic. However, they were all interesting as creative thought, in my opinion. Some unrealistic ideas lead to more usable or practical inventions. Therefore, it is important to be supportive of creative ideas regardless of their practical applications.
I've loved it all my life!.......2006-05-22
My father was a co-author of this delightful little book. In the 1930's he and his friend, Al Brown, went on vacation to Washington, D.C. With time on their hands and fueled with a little beer, they found themselves in the U.S. Patent office looking up odd things that had actually gotten patents. It was first published as, "Beware of Imitations" and was reviewed favorably by Life Magazine. Patent Attorneys collected it. Then, it was published as, "Absolutely Mad Inventions". When my father was in his late 80's, he sold the rights to it for a paltry sum. This publication is news to me. I re-read it often and cherish the copy he signed to me (his oldest), "To My First Edition". Naturally, I heartily recommend it.
A Most Amusing Book.......2001-10-11
This is one of the most hilarious books you will ever browse, and will be eager to share with a someone. It is a treat. It induces nothing but side-splitting belly laughs without ever trying. The book lists actual patents obtained, by inventive out-of-the-box thinkers and tinkerers. It beats any current humorists's or comedien's dull gibberish by a long shot. I knew there were wacko patents issued to wacko inventors but this list contains: lip shaper, automatic saluting hat, trains which go over one another on the same track,( as opposed to colluding) vulture powered baloons, water splashing wake up clocks, chewed gum locket, and some others I will let you to find out yourself. All and all, there are about 60 inventions listed. These inventions, all, were granted US patents by the Patent Office. Keep it on your bedside it will end your day laughing out loud regardless of the day you had earlier.
Great Book!.......1999-03-31
Ever wonder where all those examples of crazy inventions come from? This is the book. Glasses for chickens, dimple maker....all sorts of crazy ideas. Maybe it will stimulate some new ideas. Either way, it's so cheap you can't go wrong.

Almost everything one needs to know........2007-05-31
Maps, item list, enemy info's, this guide will help you find the keys you need and beat the bosses that have been annoying the hell out of you ever since they started chasing you.
Turns the game inside out and exposes its guts.......2007-05-16
Well, not literally, but this detailed, in-depth guide reveals EVERY SINGLE secret, all hidden item locations and hiding places, strengths/weaknesses of each villain, solutions to every puzzle, how to get every ending, and how to maximize your friendship level with Hewie, your faithful dog. And it's even in color!
When I was playing the game without the guide, I was completely lost and running around in circles like a headless chicken. Those of you who have played the game will agree that the in-game map is of limited use, and it's often not clear where your next objective is. The guide solved all my problems and more, pointing out things I never would have thought of on my own. The guide may actually have gone to the other extreme and made my playing experience too easy, but that's better than scratching my head bald. All in all a worthy investment.
Love the game.......2006-04-13
I bought Haunting Ground when it first came out...There was no guide book...I still beat the game anyway...Since I beat the game I have replayed it over 5 times...This game is intriguing...Once you're hooked you're hooked...Everytime you play it you discover more and more things about the game...For those of us who are not into the whole guns ablazing type games this one is exactly what you are looking for...I don't have the guide but I plan on getting it SOON!!! I reccommend this game to people who like to explore and solve puzzles...Hence: It would be a total waste of time for children...
Gamer Review.......2005-10-25
A must have for the most interesting game to be put out in years. Great graphics, very demented and twisted. This guide helps through those rough spots and also helps find those medallion spots that only Hewie can get to.

According to Jim Rogers, "commodities get no respect." Here are a few reasons why he thinks they should: they are easier to comprehend and study than stocks and behave more rationally since they are subject to the basic laws of supply and demand; they have outperformed many other investment options in recent years; it is foolish to ignore an entire sector of the marketplace; and a bull market is currently under way in commodities--a trend that Rogers expects to last for a least a decade longer. Further, Rogers believes that you cannot be a successful investor in stocks, bonds, or currencies without an understanding of commodities. Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market is designed to introduce the novice to the basics of investing in commodities as well as explain what they are and why they are important. In doing so, he shatters some myths about the relative risks of commodities, explains the relationship between the stock and commodities markets, and provides a succinct analysis and history of the global oil, gold, lead, sugar, and coffee markets.
Rogers also offers practical advice and information for beginners, including the best resources, how to read the commodities reports in the newspaper or on television, the various ways to open an account, information on index funds (such as Rogers' own index fund that he started in 1998), mechanisms, terminology, and other vital details people must know before investing. Clearly written and entertaining, Hot Commodities offers a solid introduction to investments that many people, including financial advisors, fail to give the proper respect. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
The next bull market is here. It’s not in stocks. It’s not in bonds. It’s in commodities –and some smart investors will be riding that bull to record returns in the next decade.
Before Jim Rogers hit the road to write his bestselling books Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, he was one of the world’s most successful investors. He cofounded the Quantum Fund and made so much money that he never needed to work again. Yet despite his success, Rogers has never written a book of practical investment advice–until now.
In Hot Commodities, Rogers offers the lowdown on the most lucrative markets for today and tomorrow. In 1998, gliding under the radar, a bull market in commodities began. Rogers thinks it’s going to continue for at least fifteen years–and he’s put his money where his mouth is: In 1998, he started his own commodities index fund. It’s up 165% since then, with more than $200 million invested, and it’s the single-best performing index fund in the world in any asset class. Less risky than stocks and less sluggish than bonds,, commodities are where the money is–and will be in the years ahead. Rogers’s strategies are simple and straightforward. You can start small–a few thousand dollars will suffice. It’s all about putting your money into stuff you understand, the basic materials of everyday life, like coal, sugar, cotton, corn, or crude oil. Once you recognize the cyclical and historical trading patterns outlined here, you’ll be on your way.
In language that is both colorful and accessible, but Rogers explains why the world of commodity investing can be one of the simplest of all–and how commodities are the bases by which investors can value companies, markets, and whole economies. To be a truly great investor is to know something about commodities.
For small investors and high rollers alike, Hot Commodities is as good as gold . . . or lead, or aluminum, which are some of the commodities Rogers says could be as rewarding for investors.
From the Hardcover edition.

Good info.......2007-08-14
The book is well written,Jim is very knowledgeable and gives ways in which anyone can invest in commodities. He explains a complicated subject in laymans terms. He also describes the world today and how politics and logistics come into play, a fascinating book.
Good overall intro but don't expect to make a trade after reading it.......2007-07-27
Before reading this book, I barely knew how to spell commodities, much less trade them. This book gives a good high-level introduction to what the commodities market is all about and attempts to get you jazzed about the market for the coming decade. After reading the book, you'll be able to understand the commodity trading lingo and know how to read prices, but will not have enough information (nor the confidence) to make your first trade. It lacks thorough details concerning trading in general, fundamental analysis of futures, and direction on creating a trading plan. I'm currently reading Trading Commodities & Financial Futures by George Kleinman which goes into much better detail of these subjects. I certainly got a better handle on trading by reading Hot Commodities, but it's a bit novice, even for a novice.
Rating Jim Rogers.......2007-07-03
As a result of Jim Rogers, I've actually changed a substantial part of my portfolio. However, this is an endorsement of Jim Rogers, and not the book, "Hot Commodities." I knew no more after reading the book than I did after hearing and seeing him on TV. The message could have been summed up in about ten pages, not 255.
cheap introduction to fundamental analysis.......2007-06-15
The author gives some of his logic why he believes the commodities market is entering a bull market for maybe the next decade, then he follows this with some alternatives to the commodities market followed by the usual introduction about how the commodities markets function. Next he turns to showing how to think about the markets as a fundamentalist--he claims he is the world's worst trader. He talks about the impact of China on the markets, as contrasted with the impact of India and other Central Asian emerging economies (including Russia). Then he illustrates the fundamentalist logic for supply, demand and world politics and their influence on the prices for oil, gold (and lead), sugar and coffee. Along the way he mixes in some of his market experience and insights.
I find the value of the book primarily in his illustration of the kind to thinking and resources needed to perform fundamental analysis of the commodities market. And this is one of the cheapest books to cover the basics.
