Winner of the 1995 Mitchell Prize for Art History........1999-10-17
We take for granted the proliferation of portable, mass produced images in our culture, but it has been decades since the early history of the mass production of pictures has been dealt with, and Landau and Parshall's book is the most important recent work adding to our understanding of early prints. The volume's scope takes into consideration aesthetics, the art market, techniques and styles, and the historical contexts and themes of prints. These include religious themes, secular and/or antique contents, botanicals, portraits and so on. It is also wonderfully illustrated, making it, frankly, one of the most visually compelling art history books of recent years. It is very scholarly, yet is as attractive as the best exhibition catalogue (in this it reminds one of Michael Baxandall's Limewood Sculptors book, also a Mitchell Prize winner). And at it's probably the best art history bargain out there. I teach a course in Print Culture at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and this is one of my textbooks. -Allan Langdale, UCSC Art History Department

Book Description
The book that Janet Maslin of The New York Times has called "indispensable" and "a transfixing study of American mores and manners that happens to incorporate boundless laughs, too" is finally available in paperback—fully updated and featuring a brand new introduction by Adam Gopnik.
Organized by decade, with commentary by some of the magazine's finest writers, this landmark collection showcases the work of the hundreds of talented artists who have contributed cartoons over the course ofThe New Yorker's eight-two-year history. From the early cartoons of Peter Arno, George Price and Charles Addams to the cutting-edge work of Alex Gregory, Matthew Diffee and Bruce Eric Kaplan (with stops along the way for the genius of Charles Barsotti, Roz Chast, Jack Ziegler, George Booth, and many others), the art collected here forms, as David Remnick puts it in his Foreword, "the longest-running popular comic genre in American life."
Throughout the book, brief overviews of each era's predominant themes—from the Depression and nudity to technology and the Internet, highlight various genres of cartoons and shed light on our pastimes and preoccupations. Brief profiles and mini-portfolios spotlight the work of key cartoonists, including Arno, Chast, Ziegler, and others.
The DVD-ROM included with the book is what really makes the "Complete Cartoons" complete. Compatible with most home computers and easily browsable, the disk contains a mind-boggling 70,363 cartoons, indexed in a variety of ways. Perhaps you'd like to find all the cartoons by your favorite artist. Or maybe you'd like to look up the cartoons that ran the week you were born, or all of the cartoons on a particular subject. Of course, you can always begin at the beginning, February 21, 1925, and experience the unprecedented pleasure of reading through every single cartoon ever published in The New Yorker.
Enjoy this one-of-a-kind protrait of American life over the past eight decades, as captured by the talented pens and singular outlooks of the masters of the cartoonist's art.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book but massive!.......2007-09-28
Have enjoyed the New Yorker since I was old enough to turn the pages. This book is a "real history of our times" in addition to being a pleasure to read. Depressions, wars, politics, and general attitudes are shown with all their "warts and wrinkles". This is a wonderful book, but read it sitting at your desk, or kitchen table, or some other sturdy base. Take several days to go through it, (at the very least), since cartoon meltdown is a real possibily if taken all at once. Aside from the "reading logistics" it's a great book.
Cartoons for the "literati" - buy it for the CDs.......2007-09-10
A book with 6 decades worth of wry New Yorker cartoons needs a strong coffee table and a big lap. Flipping through the book gives you a wonderful look at the flow of current affairs, both social and political. Along the way the editors give us a narrative that's a good course in the history of American humor in the 20th century.
The real bonus, though, is not the book, which despite its being massive is not "Complete." It has maybe 20% of the 60,000-plus cartoon promised on the cover. The complete set you want is on 2 CDs included in the book, and the CDs are searchable by topic, etc.
So if you want a cartoon on consultants (and I'm a consultant), here's one: Two detectives stand over the prone lower half of a murder victim. "By the number an violence of the stab wounds," says one, "I'd guess he was a consultant."
Buy the book so you can open it at any point and smile or laugh out loud; use the CDs to browse the whiole New Yorker cartoon universe and/or find the smiles and laughs you want.
DVD and Book are fantastic.......2007-08-15
I had been apprehensive about this purchase after reading the reviews rubbishing the quality of the resolution on the DVD. I was surprised to find however, that the resolution of the cartoons is fine. Occasionally I will have trouble reading the finer print, but with 72,000 of them, it doesn't really matter.
I have never seen the book.......2007-07-18
It was a gift I bought for somebody else, but the person who received it, took picture of it and she was so happy with the book that I have to rate it 5 stars. Maybe I will buy one for myself too...who knows.
The Cartoons are great! CDs are awesome too..........2007-07-08
I wanted to clarify some doubts about the resolution of the cartoons on the CDs. They are perfectly fine and don't know how it can be better. The CD contains cartoons in pdf documents, and there is one cartoon per page. Each cartoon is dated and has the cartoonist's name. I didn't find any problem at all. I am using Adobe Acrobat reader 7.0 and Windows Vista OS. The CD couldn't directly launch pdf which I suspect is because of Vista. Hence, I just opened mainmenu.pdf directly from adobe acrobat reader and was really happy. Please go ahead and buy this, the CDs are not low resolution.

Book Description
A hilarious and satirical look at race relations that is almost too close for comfort, this pseudo-guidebook gives both renters and rentals "much-needed" advice and tips on technique. Reframing actual stories, techniques, requests, and responses gathered from the author's more than 30 years of research and experience, tips are provided in step-by-step outlines for renters to get the most for their money, and how rentals can become successful and wealthy, what they should wear, and topics of conversation to avoid. The book also serves up photo-dramatizations of some of the popular approaches covered in the book, handy tip-boxes, frequently asked questions for renters and rentals, a "How do I know if I'm being rented" quiz, a glossary of important terms, and "quickie" insta-rentals for those who need to rent on the go. Punctuated by quotes from former renters, and featuring rental diaries based on real encounters, this satire shocks and amuses, presenting a strikingly stark mirror of human relationships.
Customer Reviews:
great.......2007-03-21
This book is in great condition and arrived well within the estimated time period. Thanks!
one note book.......2006-12-04
I was initially offended by this book, as it implies that all friendships between blacks and whites serve the purpose of making the white person feel cool and muticultural. But, I spent my had-earned money on this book, so I quickly decided to leave my whiteness at the door and have a laugh. I mean, I have known my fair share of white liberals who use their black friends/colleagues/lovers/students as multiculturalism collateral. But, ater awhile, as that is THE only premise of the book, the humor got old, and the author implies that any friendship between a white person and a black person is akin to black slavery. Whats that? Was I enslaving my black friend from college when I crashed at her place while in New York and complained to her about how fat I felt? And how many times did the author have to mention the white persons desire to touch the black persons hair? not only is this book one note, it is one-sided, and maybe even offensive. i only read it for a book club. i gave it two stars instead of one because, I have to admite, for awhile ther it was funny.
An insightful read.......2006-04-30
Ms. ayo has written a very clever and insightful (for an old white guy like myself) book. I don't see it so much as poking fun at white people, but more like, as you read it, it's rather like looking in a mirror and seeing yourself in a slightly different view. Not better or worse, just different. Well, for me it was a good experience and as a person from a small town in the midwest with no black friends it was, again, insightful. I see a few ditto-heads have found it offensive. That's not surprising. What is surprising is that they read books! Perhaps I'll try the service. I've atually never thought about what a black woman's hair feels like...until now!!! Good book, damali ayo!
Get a Life Again.......2006-04-28
I still say the this author is a racist and as to K. Spence's review-you are an idiot-of course Jews are a race. Try using the dictionary once in a while.
hilarious.......2006-01-10
So far, I'm about halfway through this book, and it is pure comedy. It is the literary version of that "blackpeopleloveus.com" website. It's funny because I've experienced many of the situations presented in the book and it's nice to know that I am not alone in any of this. I recommend this book to those people who are the first to stand up and declare "I'm not racist" and refuse to acknowledge their own individual prejudices and stereotypes. This is the only way we will be able to tackle institutional racism.
damali, you put your foot in this. bravissima!

Book Description
The silent cinema was America's first modern entertainment industry, a complex social, cultural, and technological phenomenon that swept the country in the early years of the twentieth century. Richard Koszarski examines the underlying structures that made the silent-movie era work, from the operations of eastern bankers to the problems of neighborhood theater musicians. He offers a new perspective on the development of this major new industry and art form and the public's response to it.
Customer Reviews:
One of the greatest books on the silent age.......2006-11-28
This is a must have for any film buff . This volume is endlessly fascinating as it covers all areas of the silent film age from the studios to the theatres and everything in between. The author speaks in a factual style without being dry and the photo's all serve to illustrate the text. I have seen and read an endless amount of books on film being a dye-in-the -wool film fanatic all my life and this book stands amongst the most informative, fascinating well researched volumes I have ever seen. You know you love a book when you can't put the darn thing down, which was the case with this one.
An Incredibly Thorough Look at the Silent Film.......2002-08-05
Don't be fooled by the slimness of this book. It is packed with information and is extremely useful in giving the reader a view of the American film industry in the heyday of the silent era.
One can read not only about popular genres and movie stars, but about how the studios came into existance (and Koszarski presents this in a clear, understandable way), and how movies were shown to the public, including the legendary "dream palace" movie theaters.
I am left breathless by this book. Was there an aspect of movies in the 1920s that Koszarski overlooked? If so, it must be unimportant. He mastered an incredible amount of information and presented it very clearly and concisely here. Highly recommended to all interested in the American film industry.

Book Description
Learn to play a variety of Dobro/lap-steel guitar styles using moveable scale patterns, common licks and techniques with this outstanding book/CD pack. The CD includes 46 demonstration tracks, and the book features easy-to-follow diagrams and instructions for beginning, intermediate and advanced players. In no time, you'll be playing Dobro like a pro!
Customer Reviews:
An excellent primer!.......2007-08-20
I'm enjoying this book and CD very much! I admit it might be easier for someone like me to deal with because I play both Dobro and Lap steel. And, although not a great player I have a halfway idea what's going on with both instruments. When purchasing this course one must keep in mind this is NOT a "How to Play the Dobro/Lapsteel"type course. I wouldn't recommend it for the beginner! You need some chops. It does what it says it will. It teaches you to explore the fingerboard (or in this case; Slideboard)in a coherent manner. Some examples are quite easy and some are not. I dropped a star because on some of the tracks Fred used too much distortion and it's a bit of a problem sorting them out. The distortion would have been fine on stage but not in a teaching situation. But well worth the money. I learned a bunch!
Total trash.......2005-11-03
If you want to play blues steel guitar in a heavy metal band this dobro book is for you. Otherwise forget it. Book is useless and the CD is even worse. Breifly touches on the G scale then hints at how to do the rest. CD consists of short lines of heavily distorted electric guitar and steel guitar music. What happened to the DOBRO? Oh yes, I think I heard four or five notes from one in there somewhere. I am learning much more with a fretboard chart bought on an online auction we all know of for a few bucks. One star cause there's no zero,or better yet, negative.
High Marks for Dobro Roadmaps.......2003-04-13
Author Fred Sokolow has written "How to" books on banjo, as well as Fretboard Roadmaps for Guitar, Slide Guitar and Dobro. The author recommends Fretboard Roadmaps-Guitar as a music theory reference for Fretboard Roadmaps-Dobro. In my opinion, if the user has some knowledge of music thory, and understands tablature, "Fretboard Roadmaps-Dobro" could be used as a stand alone book.
This is the second instruction book I have purchased for Dobro and am quiet pleased with my selection. The book covers open tunings in the keys of G and D, chords, scales and riffs with each subject being well documented.
The music examples cover a variety of dobro styles with all of the licks, riffs and tunes in the book played on the accompanying recording. The CD is well recorded with the steel guitar on one side of the stereo and the backup band on the other side.
Before purchasing this book I reviewed several other books on the subject. After using this book, I recommend it to students of the dobro steel guitar.
Over-rated Fretboard Roadmaps.......2002-12-09
This book claims to be of great help to those wishing to learn more about playing the dobro or lap steel guitar. The cover has some very nice artwork and looks great on your coffee table.
The cd that comes with the book is not put together very well. It is difficult to hear the dobro parts being played. When trying to follow the book along with the cd it is almost impossible to be sure of what part you are hearing.
If I were a professional musician I'm sure it would be a walk in the park to make use of the book. For a novice, it has little value.

There isn't a whole lot of information on the site about this product, so I ordered it, hoping that it would be a good way to help my kids learn Italian. It turns out it's just a bunch of animal stickers with the name written in Italian next to each one. Cute, but not really a great educational tool.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Lean: Lessons from the Road
ASIN: 1563273225 |
Book Description
Lean production has been proven unbeatable in organizing production operations, yet the majority of attempts to implement lean end in disappointing results. The critical factor so often overlooked is that lean implementation requires day-to-day, hour-by-hour management practices and skills that leaders in conventional batch-and-queue environments are neither familiar nor comfortable with.
Creating a Lean Culture helps lean leaders succeed in their personal batch-to-lean transformation. It provides a practical guide to implementing the missing links needed to sustain a lean implementation. Mann provides critical guidance on developing and using the key elements of a lean management system, including: leader standard work, visual controls, daily accountability processes, maintaining a process focus, managing key HR issues, and much more. In addition, a questionnaire is included to help assess current management practices and monitor progress.
Highlights: Distinguishes the much-discussed, abstract concept of "lean culture" from the concrete, implementable practices of lean management. Describes and illustrates 4 key principles of lean management: leader standard work; visual controls; daily accountability process, and discipline. Shows how visual controls bring process focus to life, tie in lean's requirement for highly disciplined execution, and make leaders' new jobs far easier to explain, model and evaluate. Moves beyond models and theories of lean management to show how to implement the daily practices that are the key to implementing and sustaining a lean transformation. Lots of case examples, figures and photographs.

This book fills an essential gap between Liker's Toyota Way and the many books on Lean Tools.
We intentionally didn't begin our lean transformation in our large service orgnization until we had this book because we saw the folly in trying to implement a bunch of lean tools without the necessary management system.
We have visited some Tier 1 Toyota suppliers and Kaizen really means continuous improvement not a succession of week-long projects that many big-time consultants and organizations focus on.
This book is our defacto lean transformation handbook and I am glad to see that it has become a standard reference for at least two MBA programs in the area.
Book has quite an impact on new lean leaders.......2007-06-19
This is a fantastic book, one of the small number of "core" lean books that I recommend to people. I've used the book with many healthcare clients who are new to lean. They have loved the book so much that they have read it three times, learning something new each time, and learning something different at each stage of their lean learning journey. The most frequent comment I hear is that the book means one thing to them before they start but it means even more to them after they have "struggled" with a lean environment on their own, revisiting the book and its concepts helps immensely.
Mann's book helps make concrete the vague notion of a "lean culture" and spells out steps leaders can take to start moving in that direction. The book doesn't promise quick fixes, nor should it, but it puts you on the right path to developing your people, your leaders, and your problem solving skills. Kudos to David Mann for a very practical, actionable guide for lean leaders or those of us who strive to become lean leaders.
Clearly shows you why something so simple is so hard to do.......2007-04-11
I've been doing Lean since 2000 (Six Sigma earlier, 1997) and have been applying general Toyota methods with what I'd consider a very good amount of success. The problem has been, how do you convey the necessity of the Toyota Lean method as a complete "business system" as opposed to JIT and "tools" thinking for busy, batch-thinking individuals? This book fills the gaping void.
Pro:
-Straight forward principles, complete and thorough
-Appear to be true to the Toyota principles as I have seen demonstrated by ex-Toyota executives/leaders turned consultants
-Drives to the heart of lean as a business system, with many elements that I've personally tried or seen work well
-A Shingo Prize winner... impressive
-Avoids excessive Japanese terminology (not an issue for me, but sometimes an issue for others)
Con:
-I think that the power of IT applications is somewhat understated, and pitfalls of using or attempting to use IT-related systems not well described. Would like to see a better description of pitfalls and issues more specifically. Until then, think of IT as you would if you were automating a process... it had better be high volume and well understood/mature.
Bottom Line: I think this a must-have text, and it is excellently written and laid out... plus it's to the point reinforced with numerous short case study examples. I'd recommend pairing this book with "The Toyota Way" (read that first to pave the way for this book). Also consider "The Toyota Way Fieldbook" as the ideal 3rd text to study. A word of caution, these books require a whole new way of thinking and commitment.
New Lean Leader's Review.......2007-04-01
Good easy to follow book. Interesting sections of different leader's responsibilities and the amount of time they should spend on standard work relative to their position. Also, intersting ideas on how to collect and follow up on worker's improvement ideas.
Managing in a Lean Organisation.......2007-03-08
There are many books on the principles of lean, how to map value streams, 5S and so on. I am not aware of any other books devoted to how managers should behave in the lean environment. This book concentrates on the management "process" and recommends a number of key behaviours for lean leaders:
1) Leader standard work - i.e. standard tasks, notably walking the work area and reviewing performance on the "gemba", as a regular activity;
2) Visual controls - linking cell and value stream visual management with strategy;
3) Daily accountability meetings.
It is fairly straightforward to understand, and it is a short book (less than 200 pages) but it makes its points well and its clear focus highlights the importance of these simple activities and behaviours for managers to reinforce and sustain the lean philosophy. I particularly like the chapter on people and participation. The book could have an easier style but overall I recommend it for all managers moving towards lean. Without managers displaying the lean culture in their actions, the transformation will not hold.
