This book describes in detail the many varied paths that visual artists explored during the 60's, a time of great political, cultural, and artistic ferment. The subtitle of the book, "American and European Art in the Era of Dissent," reflects Crow's observation that the experimental art of the period reflected 60's political dissent. He notes that 60's art, setting itself up as an alternative to an existing "genteel, snobbish, and unadventurous art culture," deliberately mocks mainstream values, and tends to be inaccessible to ordinary viewers. His book attempts to give a useful explanation of what that art was all about.
In order to place the period in its historical context, the book starts with mid-50's work of Jasper Johns, and of California artists whose innovative work had repercussions across the country and eventually in Europe. Crow shows how in the course of the 15 years that the book covers the normal values of fine art were rejected, how divisions between painting, sculpture, and design were breached, and how unconventional departures from artistic norms were exalted. The book details the role of theory during the period, as well as its relationship to the roiling politics of the time. The currents, cross-currents, whirlpools, and eddies of trends such as abstract expressionism, pop art, performance art, happenings, land art, and body art are detailed, as are their representative practitioners and theorists.
The book includes good, clear illustrations throughout, and adds a useful year-by-year chart of political, cultural, and artistic events of the period. While the writing is generally straightforward, and non-judgmental, it sometimes becomes turgid. (For example, "in an art without significant internal relationships, it was necessary to dominate a context of sufficient order and clarity to make a light-fixture or a stack of bricks register as an art event.")
Robert Hughes wrote in The Shock of the New that "the elite corps of criticism struggled in the sixties to codify its high-art credential and endow it with a problematic or critical content that it did not possess." For devotees of contemporary art with an interest in the 60's, the book gives a thorough review of the struggles of that period. Readers with a more general interest in art, however, while finding the book informative and interesting, may also learn more than they want to know about many artists and theories that are ultimately of minor interest.

Much like Da Vinci's work, a great deal of Batman essentials has been omitted from the blueprints. Let's face it guys, there's no way we can turn into Batman! However the book does provide great entertainment, it's filled with hard-to-come-across info on the Dark Crusaders and overall is a chance to upgrade your knowledge of the greates Super Heroes in DC Comics.

This is a great "training" book for all types of Batman fans. The book is fictional, and even has a disclaimer at the front. Nevertheless, the "Worst Case Scenario" style book contains real-world and insightful information. The Batman references are numerous and accurate. The artwork, while not graphic novel quality, is well done. If you enjoy Batman or "Worst Case Scenario", you will enjoy this.
Inspired or should that be Inspiring.......2006-05-31
I love this book! It is funny, yet inspired (or should that be inspiring). My wife got this for me as a Christmas present a few yeas ago, and I have read it a few times, however I have refused to lend this out (after all I could not have just anyone learn these skills). According to the authors they researched every aspect of this book and consulted professionals and experts. So in theory a person could become Batman (although they would need to choose a different name, Batman is trademarked), an unlimited budget would also help. However as the book points out vigilantism is illegal, and even the most well meaning vigilante would be arrested. The book also contains a great disclaimer, stating that DC comics will not be held liable for any one who misuse the knowledge presented in this training manual.

This book is for anybody who rooted for Ming The Merciless or Cobra Commander when they were a kid.
And why is it disturbing? Reading it, I find that many of the suggestion on how a Villain could improve his life would work for ME, too....

I thought this book was super cute. I got a couple like it for my husband as a fun Christmas gift and he thought they were totally weird but very cool. I have fun reading them to my husband as well as my 5 year old boy. Great fun and would be a wonderful gift for someone with a good funny bone. :)

The Villan's Guide to Better Living is a book for all you up and coming evil-doers. This book shows you how to do things like protect your lair and how to motivate your minions. It also covers the finer things in life like dating and how to make evil friends.
My favorite part in this book is when they went over how to protect and care for your evil abode. They went over the old-fashioned style moat and spiked fence. They also covered more in-depth approaches like casting a spell over your house to make it invisible. They also showed you easy ways to care for a lair like how to fix up a dungeons and take care of a carnivorous garden.
I would definitly recommend this book to any up and coming villan. This book has helped me in my own evil doing and it will help in yours. When I read this book it made me realize how much better my life could be. It showed me that there is a whole other side to life. Any up and coming evil villan should read this book.

If you have ever thought about raising an army of the dead and have a good sense of humor, this book is for you. This is a lighthearted look at how to live better as a villain.
Its not particularly realistic, but it isn't meant to be either. This book caters to those dark days that everyone has when you feel mean, everybody is pissed at you and nothing seems to go right. The thought is, if everyone thinks you're evil anyways, put your evil to good use and really become a better villain!
I bought a copy for my boss, who prides herself on how she's perfected a maniacal laugh while rubbing her hands together greedily. She laughed her head off. We especially love the section in "Work" on how to make your un-conventional villian skill set fit normal resumés. For example, "Assassinated the King" can become "skilled at driving changes in leadership".

I think this book covers alot of subjects, but the depth of each subject is very shallow. if I didn't know many of these things before reading this book I wouldn't understand more than half the explanaisions.

Great little book that falls apart........2004-11-25
This is a handy little book which covers many technical aspects of video in one volume. It's been a great resource for my work and I'd recommend it to anyone who is technically minded and is interested in what makes things work and why things are the way they are with digital and analogue video. The reason I've given this particular book only 3 stars is that it has started to shed pages after only having been moderately read. The binding glue is brittle and the pages come flying out. Other than that it is a great book.

Well written, easy to use, practical guide to questions you are very likely to hear in your interview. While the claim to provide the "best answers" may be arguable, the questions were on target and the ideas for how one might answer them were excellent. This book is great for those who hire as well as for those who are seeking employment. Worth the investment.

I have been out of work for a little over a year, and all my previous employments were temp jobs so I needed to brush up on everything. After reading the reviews I decided to go with this book.
I have never regretted it since and have recommended it to close friends. I kid you not when I say that during my interview I ended up interviewing the interviewer. Before the interview I did what the book said and read up on the company and found out that they had won several awards which I later mentioned to her. Apparently none of the other candidates did their homework b/c she acted impressed over that. I asked questions concerning downsizing, why she chose to work there, how long has she worked for the company, her management style. She was very friendly and very talkative...ended up telling me about her daughter in college, her background (which I found out we were raised in the same country!), etc. Making sure not to discuss salary/benefits with her (something the book recommended and I stuck to until I met the VP who gave me what I asked for) And eventhough I had to be tested after speaking to her, I was confident enough to ask her questions during the test and be honest about things I didn't understand. She even showed me the tricks behind the test! Something the recruiter said was not done with anyone else. The only thing I wished I had done was my homework in salary negotiating. So for those of you out there, do your homework on salary and negotiating tips before the interview! Do get this book for you high school/college grad. It's easy to read, down-to-earth, and for today's job hunters.

There was some good information in this book. However, there's very little new infromation that's not available for free somewhere else. What's you're paying for is mainly the time it took the author to compile the infromation gathered from numerous places. Most people serious enough to buy a book like this probably won't have a problem finding work anyway.

I bought this book because I was told of pending layoffs due to selling a division of the company. I had been there almost 5 years, so I definitely needed to get a review on my Interviewing skills.
This book prepared me with questions that might be asked, possible answers and questions that cannot be asked. I especially liked Ch.10 "Stress Questions" These type questions really make you think about your career, where you've been and where you intend to go. Answers to these questions, I feel, enable you to elaborate on other questions that might be asked during an interview. It really is about the applicant as a whole and what you have to offer that company.
This book helped me land my dream job (seriously) and I hope it does the same for you!
A good book to review when looking for a job.......2006-11-21
If for nothing else the books forces you to review your work history and have every bit of information about your self available.
The numerous questions will help anyone become more familiar with one's self and be able to answer most any question without hesitation. This book does not have ALL the questions, but just reading through it and answering the ones present forces you to be aware of all your experience (good and bad). Now that you know your "work experience" you can turn it into a resume and better sell your self.
The book was a definite help for me.

The first book was much, much better........2005-11-06
If you have already read the first book "Best Answers...", and you read it carefully, you are not likely to find the sequel to be of the same value. I noticed the second book has a co-author, and you can feel it from the text. The new 201 questions are quite plain and are not as interesting or challenging as the first 201 in the first book.
There is a lot in the text that is just common knowledge. I also found some questionable advices. Chapter 2 "how to get interviews" tells you to find phone numbers of line managers and call them directly asking for an interview. If you are a professional with experience seeking for a senior position, I doubt you would be hired this way. I think it shows disrespect to the managers' busy schedule.
Chapters 6 and 7 are trying to give you some basics on how to prepare for an interview. You can find information on it of about the same quality in almost every interviewing book. There are also other books that are doing it better.
Overall, an OK book (I've seen worse), but don't expect it to be as thrilling as the first one. Oh, well... That's pretty typical for a sequel.

This comprehensive, smart book gives you the basics on how to get a job interview, perform well at the interview, end the interview and even negotiate the terms of your benefits if you're hired. The authors raise and provide answers to several hundred questions - some of them painfully obvious, but some of them pretty tough, like "Why do you have that felony conviction?" We from getAbstract have the 202nd question: If you're applying for a job, why haven't you already read this?
