Book Description
The Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto (1518–94) is an ambiguous figure in the history of art. Critics and writers such as Vasari, Ruskin and Sartre all placed him in opposition to the established artistic practice of his time, noting that he had abandoned the values that typified the venerable Venetian Renaissance tradition, even being expelled as an apprentice from the workshop of Titian. This generously illustrated book offers a long-overdue re-evaluation of Tintoretto. Tom Nichols charts the artist's life and work in the context of Venetian art and the culture of the Cinquecento. He shows how the artist created a new manner of painting, which for all its originality and sophistication made its first appeal to the shared emotions of the widest-possible viewing audience. The book deals extensively with Tintoretto's greatest works, including the paintings at the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice.
Customer Reviews:
Discover Tintoretto.......2005-09-20
Tintoretto is an artist that is frequently overlooked, even by me, an avid reader and viewer of art. After being overwhelmed by his works in Venice I sought out a book to help me understand him more. This book was very satisfying in that the author analyses not only the painter, but puts him in the context of 16th century Venice. There are few books in English about Tintoretto; this is an excellent one.
best tintoretto book on market.......2000-04-29
This book is, hands down, the best book on the works of Tintoretto on the market. Tom Nichols is a very well respected and well published art historian in the field and this book lives up to his reputation. It has many beautiful color prints of paintings (along with some black and white) and some very useful and helpful diagrams of the Scuole di San Rocco that show where many of Tintoretto's paintings are. It is probably the most complete, up to date work about any Venetian painter that I have read.

Most Useful.......2005-10-28
This was the most useful book for learning to draw birds that I have found to date. It was easy to follow, the drawings were accurate without being overly ornate, and the diversity of birds was perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn to draw, and especially for those who want to draw birds.
Very good.......2003-02-05
good book. when Lee J. Ames draws with someone else it is a bit harder. still easy and fun.

Book Description
Think teenagers don't read as much as they used to? Drop in any bookstore and you're likely to find a teenager sitting cross-legged on the floor, paging through the latest Zits book. Zits chronicles the daily lives of a teen in a way that's not done in the popular media-with respect. "Having teenagers in the house is like having a front-row seat to one of life's great passages," says Jim Borgman. "Zits tries to respect that period by taking a sympathetic view of all the players involved-the parents, as well as the kids."
"We like to think of Zits as the antidote to all of the bad stuff you read about teenagers today," adds Jerry Scott. "Many people believe that modern adolescence is all about gangs, guns, drugs, and AIDS. While all of that exists, Zits takes a look at the teen years from ground level, where, for most kids, relationships, friendships, school, and sports are the stuff of daily life." Zits levels the playing field and often causes (gasp!) communication to occur between kids and their parents.
Appearing in over 1,200 newspapers worldwide, this enormously popular comic strip has been a comic staple since it was first syndicated by King Features in 1997.

Teenager guidebook for parents........2007-05-01
We are parents to a just-teen teenager.
I can't help but to relate the book to real-life experiances, and you just can't help but to laugh at them. Good therapy.
If you have younger kids, I recommend the Baby Blues series.
Sketchbooks and Treasuries.......2006-12-30
OK Will you people stop complaining about overlapping content? Get it through your head: They release sketchbooks. They bundle them two at a time in the Treasuries. Here's how it works out, seeing as I gotta spell it out for you:
Humungous Zits - Sketchbooks #1 and #2
Big Honking Zits - Sketchbooks #3 and #4
Zits Supersized - Sketchbooks #5 and #6
Random Zits - Sketchbooks #7 and #8
Crack of Noon - Sketchbooks #9 and #10
Once they release the 12th sketchbook, another treasury will be created that contains Sketchbooks #11 and #12. Also, if you look at the page numbers, a sketchbook is 128 pages. A Treasury, containing 2 sketchbooks, is 256 pages. To all those who ended up spending more, tough luck.
My Favorite Comic Strip.......2006-08-31
I own all of the Zits books, and I love them all! Being a teenager myself, I can identify with a lot of what happens in the strip, and I imagine that parents of teens feel the same way. Always fun to read, so go buy all the Zits books!
A note about the reviewer who gave this 1 star: all of the bigger Zits books (the treasuries) contain the material from two of the smaller books (the skechbooks). I think most people would figure that out, though. Just too bad it had to lower the overall rating!
To Ripoff by Thomas G. Field, Jr........2006-07-12
If you look at the back of "Crack of Noon" by the UPC bar code it says "Includes cartoons from 'Thrashed' and 'Pimp My Lunch'" "Crack of Noon" is the collection those two books are included in. All of the larger books of Zits are collections.
Ripoff.......2006-05-27
I like Zit's, but it's scandalous that this and other Andrews McMeel books don't specify overlapping content. Thrashed and Pimp My Lunch contain nothing other than the contents of Crack of Noon.
I wasn't happy to learn that I spent (not counting S&H) over $17 for what I could have had for $11. Also, in Crack of Noon, the Sunday strips are colored.

Customer Reviews:
Kind of Silly!!!.......2007-07-02
I guess I thought that this book would have information about how to train and prepare for a variety of circumstances and eat right and get fit but it had more information about things like dressing sexy to capture a man's attention or making a man be your "slave" by treating him like crap and keeping him "coming back for more" and other silly things like that, which I am not really interested in.
No girl should be without this book.......2007-01-05
From How to Choke a Man With Your Bare Thighs, to How to Give Birth Under Pressure, this book is extremely informative for any modern day gal. There's a very interesting article on How to Outwit a Sasquatch, who knew that baring your teeth to the "Yeti" may be interpreted as an act of aggression...? And need I mention the article of How to Fend Off the Undead??
The book comes complete with an entire article on Action Heroine Hairstyles along with dozens of other TV and movie skills.
Get the book, is has a plethora of useful information, and like I said, no modern day girl should be without this handy purse size book!! (fits most Coach bags)
Superwoman meets couch patato.......2006-03-19
Another thrift shop bargain and what a bargain it was!
I laughed myself silly when I read this book, however I did enjoy reading it even if it did take itself too seriously at times but perhaps this was a subtle tongue in cheek gesture, I don't know but it was fun!
Each major section starts with a quote from either a Chick Flick or a film that has a strong female protagonist, I liked this touch and one of my favourite films "Aliens 2" appeared in it a couple of times with some excellent quotes that most of us would recognise.
This is a book for all you girls out there who secretly want to be Lara Croft, Buffy, or the next Darkangel, it give you such tips as how to drink a man under the table, escape from kidnappers, how to get your hair like your favourite heroine, surf like a demon, survive in the wilderness with nothing more than matches, a bit of string and a paperclip, as well showing you how to be someone else for a research project.
My favourite mini section in the book was on how to bluff your way into the world of the working girl, the hot tips given in the book actually came from a working girl who knows the ropes and at the time of publication she was working in the famous Bunny Ranch in Nevada.
This is the sort of book you would take on a long trip with you, it will keep you entertained that is for sure, and it is also the sort of book you can browse through again and again and some of the tips and suggestions in it are actually quite useful though I don't think I will be trying out "how to be a superwoman" tip any time soon!
A crackingly good book for the couch patato hero in all of us who is just dying to get out and show the world what she is made of...if she had the energy that is!!!!!
Fun gag gift, quick distraction.......2005-07-26
This is a great gift for the she-woman in your life, and a fun one to pass around among friends. If you are familiar with "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook" and the others of the like, you'll know what fun you are in for (the author actually wrote "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Dating & Sex").
There are some memorable lessons in here, all accompanied by terrific illustrations. Don't expect this book to change your life, but it will give you a few laughs and perhaps some tips on getting out of sticky situations.
Great Book.......2004-12-30
Great book with real live advice about survival techniques. Similar to the other Survival Handbooks with First Aid-type illustrations, this is handy for those who would like to find out how real live people like stunt doubles, firefighters, and police officers survive perilous situations. Other recommended books: The Action Hero's Handbook, Queen B's Guide to Being a Superheroine, Worst-Case Scenario Handbook, SAS Survival Handbook, and Spy Survival Handbook.
Book Description
This anthology of specially-commissioned essays introduces the film student to some of the central questions and debates that have concerned the development of film studies. Written by a team of noted scholars, the collection focuses on issues that confront us today, assessing the impact on the discipline of recent technological, cultural, and social developments; challenging received thinking, and reinventing film studies for the post-film era. In each of five thematic sections, early essays open up key problems, issues, and debates while a case study offers concrete examples of what various approaches can deliver. Covering all major topics and fully up-to-date, this reader will be a key text for all serious undergraduate and graduate students who want to understand where film is going in its second century.

In the past two decades, Othello has tried out for the basketball team, Macbeth has taken over a fast food joint, and King Lear has moved to an Iowa farmShakespeare is everywhere in popular culture. This collection of essays addresses the use of Shakespearean narratives, themes, imagery, and characterizations in non-Shakespearian cinema. The essays explore how Shakespeare and his work are manipulated within the popular media and explore topics such as racism, jealousy, misogyny and nationality.
The submissions concentrate on film and television programs that are adaptations of Shakespearean plays, including My Own Private Idaho, CSI-Miami, A Thousand Acres, Prospero's Books, O, 10 Things I Hate About You, Withnail and I, Get Over It, and The West Wing. Note from the Editors.......2004-12-10
A Twice-Told Tale analyzes contemporary reconstructions of the age of "discovery," exploration, and conquest vis-à-vis fifteenth- and sixteenth-century sources (histories, chronicles, and relaciones). The essays included, all of which appear here for the first time, focus on two clearly defined areas of study: colonial issues, and twentieth-century literature and film. Some of the articles concentrate on texts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; thus the documentation utilized belongs to the Latin American foundational period. Others direct the reader's attention to twentieth-century retrospective views of that period; in these cases, the object of analysis focuses primarily on the discursive practices of our time. Such a recurrent oscillation between colonial past and postcolonial present constitutes the essence of the book. The editors' goal has been precisely to explore the double interpretation (the "twice-told tale") of a key period in the configuration of Latin American identity.

Book Description
In this easy-to-read guide, Grandmaster and openings expert Glenn Flear goes back to basics, studying the essential principles of the Slav and Semi-Slav Defences and their numerous variations. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings to guide improving players, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Practical and excellent book........2006-08-23
The book is practical, clear and full of tips for 1600-2000 player. I don't know for players over this. I'm 1.700 and my friends, who read the book, are all in the 1600-2000 interval.
Good Intro to Important Defence against d4.......2006-02-05
Epitomizes the strengths, and weaknesses, of the Starting Out series. It serves as an excellent introduction to one of the most important defences to 1. d4. Players interested in using this system competitively would, of course, have to go deeper with the help of other works, such as Flear's own on the a6 Slav, currently the rage, or Silman and Donaldson's.
A good overview, but not much more.......2005-11-06
This is a good overview over almost all relevant variations in the Slav and Semi Slav (the quiet 7.... Nb6 in the Ne5-mainline seems to be missing, though). Each variation is explained very well, using one or two games from current tournament practice. You get some statistics plus a hint if a line needs a lot of theoretical knowledge or not. Beginners as well as strong players will benefit from these annotations. But the material presented is far too little to play the Slav or Semi Slav after studying it. This has of course nothing to do with the author, but with the concept of the "Starting Out" series. I think that you simply get too little material for your money, although Flear does an excellent job within these limitations.
Recommended for players under 2000 ELO or as a first overview if you plan to play (or face) these openings.
A practical and solid defense to 1 d4.......2005-09-23
If you are a chess player who is looking for a defence to 1 d4, consider the ideas in this book. The book is up-to-date, with plenty of annotated recent games as examples.
The book covers the lines resulting from 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6. Quite often, White continues with 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3. And, in this introductory book, Flear explains how to play either side of the major lines which follow:
4...dxc4 is the Slav.
4...e6 is the Semi-Slav
4...a6 is the Chameleon, a waiting move that is considered part of the Slav
In some cases, White plays 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 e3. Black can now reply 4...g6, the Schlechter, which the author also has a chapter on.
But there is a line which I think is a nuisance for Black. White can simply play 3 cxd5, the Exchange Variation. Black has to recapture, and the game becomes relatively easy for White. As the book shows, Black is not in serious trouble in this line, but I certainly would rather have White.
There is a way, however, to pretty much avoid the Exchange Variation. As Flear shows, Black can play the Triangle. That's the move order I recommend. Black plays 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6. After 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 c6, Black is playing a Semi-Slav and has avoided the Exchange Variation. White can still take the pawn on move 3, but it isn't as good a line.
Most likely, White will play 3 Nc3. Now, Black plays 3...c6, blocking her Queen Bishop even more. This is the characteristic position of the Triangle. White's main choices are:
4 e3, after which Black has a choice: play 4...Nf6 and get to a Semi-Slav in which White's most dangerous move, Bg5, has been avoided. Or play 4...f5, transposing to a very playable version of the Dutch Stonewall (although White can still play 5 g4).
4 Nf3, after which Black can play 4...Nf6 and get into a Semi-Slav in which White does indeed have the option of playing 5 Bg5. Or play dxc4, the Noteboom, which is wild but okay for Black.
4 e4, the dangerous Marshall Gambit. This typically goes: 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 c6 4 e4 dxe4 5 Nxe4 Bb4 6 Bd2 Qxd4 7 Bxb4 Qxe4+ 8 Be2. White's idea is to allow 8...Qxg2, answering with 9 Qd6 Nd7 10 0-0-0 and an extremely dangerous attack. So Black tends to play 8...Na6. If you are going to play this line in tournaments, I think you'll need to study more than just this introductory book, however.
Of course, that is not all Black has to learn. As I said, there is that variation where White plays 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 3 Nf3 Nf6 (you do not want to play 3...c6 here, after which White has too many good options) 4 Nc3 e6. This is the Semi-Slav, which the book spends over 100 pages on. White generally plays:
5 Bg5. This gives Black the choice of playing what Flear recommends, 5...dxc4 (the Botvinnik variation). Or trying the move I use, 5...h6 (the Moscow variation). Both require some work to learn, and Flear teaches us quite a bit about both moves.
5 e3, which leads either to the Meran variation or some Meran-avoiding sideline. The Meran variation the book recommends for Black is 5 e3 Nbd7 6 Bd3 dxc4 7 Bxc4 b5 8 Bd3 Bb7, a popular line which I've used for many years.
This book is useful and easy to read. I recommend it.
Slav Semi Slav Battle Manual.......2005-09-19
The first half of this book deals with the Slav. Roughly 119 pages, and 39 games. The second half of the book deals with the Semi-Slav Botvinnik, Moscow, Meran, Anti-Meran at roughly 126 pages and 52 games. I like the way that this book is written explaining the strategic ideas behind each variation. Also another nice thing about the book is the author recommends his favorite lines and the percentage statistics for white and black. This is nice to know but at the 1700-1800 level it is not very important. At the end of the book are a few quizzes where a position from a slav or semi slav is given, from games that were discussed in the book and you are supposed to guess the move. This is a good memory test to see if you remember the position and what to do in it. I wish there were other problems the author added that were originial given with analysis so that it was not just a pure memory test. This book is a must read for any one who plays queen pawn openings as the slav and semi-slav and the positions explained in this book occur in many openings and it is nice to know the strategic ideas. It was a good buy, and I hope to see more books on the subject from the author. The author has also written several other books on the slav, but in this book he has explained it to the masses.

Guidebook to success for career salespeople .......2007-03-08
Many sales experts advocate developing relationships with your clients rather than focusing on single transactions. Charles H. Green encourages you to earn and cherish the trust of your customers; that means putting their needs ahead of yours. He promises that trust-based relationships will generate more income for you in the long run, but only if you are genuinely sincere. You cannot feign trustworthy behavior as a sales tactic; it must come from your heart. Green tells you how to earn real trust, using his four-step sales process and five-step trust-building procedure. He offers a plethora of examples, practical suggestions and useful lists, repeating some strategies for emphasis. We encourage career salespeople to use this book.
You can't build trust if it's all about you.......2006-12-02
If you are working with an organisation that wants to 'become more customer focused' - and let's face it, who doesn't these days - you'll want to read this book. So many organisations, as they begin exploring what 'customer centricity' is all about, will soon realise that effective, long term relationships (and ultimately business success) are built on trust. But I suspect many companies set out to build trust only as long as it helps sell more stuff!
Charles Green's book helps clarify the concept of trust and the importance of becoming truely customer focused as well as the need to understand just how 'self-orientated' most organisations are. This one simple concept, self-orientation, and it's role in limiting trust, is clearly explained and demonstrated. Perhaps it is the prime reason your company is struggling to realise the full potential of customer intimacy!
Good read, well worth the time - but get senior leaders to read it as well.

This Man is Dead On.......2006-04-05
As a salesman for many years I agree with everything that Mr. Green says. In fact I remember a particular sales call where I took my vice president to visit the vice president of a company with whom we were doing business. The customer had issued a requirement for a computer printer. I had brought one of our printers with us and given it to one of his teckies on the way to the meeting.
The customer asked, 'is this printer any good?'
'No, its a piece of s**t. But it's the cheapest piece of s**t that meats your specs.'
'It's really that bad?'
'Well,' I said, 'it prints OK after you get paper in it, but putting paper in it is difficult.'
The customer smiled a little. "Yeah, I used to have one, I could never get the paper in it.' Then he turned to my VP and said, 'That's why I like to do business with him, he doesn't lie to me.'
They changed their specs and down through the years I sold them an awful lot of printers.
I think that this story illustrates what Mr. Green is saying. Make a friend, a trusted friend out of a customer or prospect and you can expect to get returns far beyond what you might expect, but only if you are a trusted friend as well.
Useful resource for Sales professionals.......2006-02-28
Green does a credible job of presenting concepts that will help build trust with prospective customers, and move the sale forward.
What I liked best about Green's book is:
+ can help you differentiate from other sales professionals by creating a customer-first vs self-centered sales approach
+ engaging, easy to read and insightful .. an intelligent book
+ helps sales professionals learn how to 'elevate' their approach to one that's more credible and honest, which builds trust, which builds sales.
Good work on it - well written.
