5 out of 5 stars Thirty years old and still funny.......2007-08-10

As of this writing, Tiny Footprints is almost
thirty years old. Most comics don't stay funny
for more than a few years. Indeed most comedy
tends to wither with age.
There are some other exceptions: Cervantes is
still a hoot, the Mark Brothers are perhaps
eternal and then there's Kliban. Part of his
appeal is that the things he draws about are eternal:
The man with his brains falling out at the sight
of a sexy woman, the naked man fishing on the
opposite bank of the river from the naked woman,
the intellectuals staring at the tough guys.
But other things, like the fellow kneeling at
the mouse hole with two slices of bread or the
plucked ducks watching Icarus take off are
evidence of a sensibility that's just this side of
mad. That's mad as in whacky, crazy, lunatic.

So if this book hits sixty, I predict that the cartoon
of the emaciated couple admiring the contents of
their stuffed refrigerator will still make people
spit up milk through their twenty-first century noses.

the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005

5 out of 5 stars A classic of modern cartooning.......1998-06-16

Burt Kliban is one of the unsung heroes of modern cartooning. 'The Far Side' and dozens of similar strips are pale imitations of this. A great sense of line and shade, wicked humour and wonderful strangeness make this unmissable. Buy it NOW!

An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction:

"I've loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don't even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--everything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It's a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer."

5 out of 5 stars Calvin and Hobbes - one of the best comics !!!.......2007-10-01

Got this as a gift for my wife on her b'day, C&H are her fav comics. she loved it !!! Cant go wrong with C&H.

I am a fan of pearls before swine tho' :D

        5 out of 5 stars It's a tiger's world.......2007-09-26

Still love Calvin and Hobbes; read it every day for years when it came out.
A perfect melange of adult and kid perspective, this strip will remind you of how you were as a kid. I was definitely Calvin, minus Hobbes. I've got the report cards to prove it.
This edition is worth getting for adults, for the quality of the printing and care in the binding. For kids I'd say get used copies of the big paperbacks; cheaper and less worrisome when your little devils inevitably tear it apart from reading it over and over.
Right up there with Doonesbury and Bloome County as a modern comic strip classic.

        4 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery.......2007-09-23

As a foreigner, living in England, I was introduced to Calvin and Hobbes by a friend, Rod Patten of Austin TX.
Firstly I trawled the websites, but now I have this three volume combined edition. Anytime I'm a little low or bored, out come C&H.
The humor and draftsmanship are both superb.
I can thoroly recommend this book to anyone with a g.s. of h.

5 out of 5 stars Profanity in Spanish.......2007-07-29

A lot of people try to avoid learning swear words in other languages. I don't understand why. These words are part of the language, and you shouldn't avoid them because they make you feel bad. Barry Farber and A.G. Hawke say in their books that you shoud avoid learning profanity in other languages. I say you should as long as you avoid SAYING them. Just KNOW them. I discuss this in my new book below.

I am not going to try to convince you that this book will teach you a lot of useful Spanish slang. As one reviewer pointed out a lot of the Spanish "cusswords" are so regional that much of the material may be useless. But if you study Spanish as much as I do there comes a time when you need a break from your studies and you simply want to be entertained. For learning Spanish entertainment I think the book is great. If you find this kind of stuff amusing I also recommend a set of tapes called Spanish for Adults Only : A Complete Course in Sexual Slang.

              1 out of 5 stars A treasury of misinformation.......2003-11-13

Firstly, I would like to summarize my credentials for writing such a harsh review: I am a quasi-native speaker of Spanish, having learnt the language at the age of five and lived a total of more than twenty years in six different Spanish-speaking countries. Furthermore, I am a federally certified court interpreter for Spanish and have become acquainted with the speech patterns of all Spanish-speaking countries without exception.

Now Ms. Berger clearly is unable to construct a correct sentence in Spanish. Much of her pseudo-Spanish is a crude translation from French and/or Italian. She does get some things right, but spoils it by failing to specify where such words and phrases are used. Cusswords are among the terms which most vary from country to country. A Spaniard curses completely differently from a Mexican or Argentine.

All in all, a waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Hope you're up on your Spanish..........2001-12-13

I thought this was a good book, BUT, I think everyone interested in buying it should know that it is not for beginners... which is cool for me, but not for the person I bought the book for. In order to follow this book, you have to already be familiar with pronunciation and verb usage and stuff. It is very helpful being that colloquialisms and cliche phrases aren't taught as often as they should be in most Spanish courses and textbooks (everyone should know how to say "pain in the neck" or "my back is killing me"), but this book has to be used as a supplement or "refresh" book.

                    Book Description

Combining detailed narrative history -- economic, ideological, and esthetic -- with thought-provoking analysis, this study provides extensive coverage of cinema in the Arab world.

Arab Cinema traces the industry's development from colonial times to the present. It analyzes its ambiguous relationship with commercial Western cinema, and the effect of Egyptian market dominance in the region. Covering not only Egyptian but also North African, Syrian, Palestinian, Iraqi, and Lebanese cinema, it traces the influence on the medium of local and regional art forms and modes of thought, both classical and popular, and shows how indigenous and external factors have combined in a dynamic process of "cultural repackaging."

Illustrated throughout with stills from the movies, and backed up by comprehensive documentation, Shafik's study breaks new ground, and will become an indispensable point of reference for all those interested in world cinema.

Until the early '90s, project management was definitely located somewhere near the unsexy end of the business spectrum. But now, with the rise of downsizing and outsourcing, it has become one of the hot disciplines. Professional membership of the U.S.-based Project Management Institute has quadrupled in the last decade, and Microsoft claimed recently to have over 2 million users worldwide of its project-management software. The reasons for this growth are simple. Project management is about managing "projects," that is, unique pieces of work (as opposed to ongoing operations). Downsizing, outsourcing, and the accelerating pace of change have meant that, increasingly, work is carried out on an ad-hoc, one-off project basis. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management is designed as an advanced textbook for businesspeople with a grasp of the basics and insufficient time (or inclination) to go back to school to learn more. Written by Eric Verzuh, president of the Versatile Company, a leading project-management consultancy, this is not a heavy academic text.

Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication.

As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady

3 out of 5 stars Useful Book, But Not for PMP.......2007-01-28

This is a useful book on project management: has some useful templates which you can also download from the website. It's easy to read. But, the editorial reviews of this book represent the recent trend to link each PM book to PMI and to its certification PMP. In my opinion, this book is not compatible with the PMI's approach to project management, and therefore is not useful for the PMP exam preparation. Here is the difference: PMI's approach is based on best practices, while this book's approach is based on one person or one school of thought on PM, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
The discipline of project management has come a long way on the path of maturity. So, if you are looking for a project management book based on best practices and global standards, or if you are looking for the PMP exam preparation material, this is NOT the right book for you.

                            5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Resource.......2006-11-07

The book was concise, well organized and highlighted all the concepts associated with Project Management.

I would recommend to anyone embarking on Program Management career

3 out of 5 stars Very good, practical book on PM.......2006-10-29

It has not new, but practical content. The way the author explain things is very clear. I use it as a guide to everyday work.
One of the best things on this book are the templates it has for the most important documents in Project Management. This templates are online also, so you can download and use them.
It has plenty of diagrams, tips, key concepts and warnings that make the reading very easy and the concepts very understandable.
The author doesn't get into deep discussion neither on quality nor risk subjects. Don't spect to learn about earned value with this book.
Don't spect either to have a very nice presentation or high quality pages, instead select this book for it's content.
