One of the most powerful and moving biographies.......2001-04-27
You may have read many memoirs, and biographies about people affected by the Holocaust. However, do not think this is similar to other stories, or be put off by a topic that is upsetting. The journey through this book will be more than rewarding. Mary Felstiner has a deep, historical knowledge of Charlotte Salomon that she relays in a moving, and powerful style. You feel that you intimately know the people she writes about. Salomon's story is not one that is widely known, but it should be. She painted her life story during the Nazi years in the form of an operetta. Her paintings recently on display in the US tell a painful, vivid story of her, her parents, and her lover. This book is about what happened to Charlotte Salomon and her family during the Nazi years, but will also be of great interest to people interested in art, and in the human condition. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Book Description
Art imitating life. That's what happens in Lynn Johnston's perennially popular comic strip, For Better or For Worse. By reflecting on her own family and experiences, she created the Pattersons: Elly, John, Michael, Elizabeth, and April, along with grandparents, grandchildren, friends, and coworkers and the everyday situations they deal with.
In Never Wink at a Worried Woman, life is progressing for each character. Elly and John tenuously think of retirement while still being preoccupied parents of a preteen. Michael and Deanna grow into their roles as new parents while Michael's career gets a new boost. Elizabeth takes more steps to adulthood, by beginning her student teaching and facing the fact that Anthony is marrying another. April is racing to turn 13, busy with her band and also helping out at Lilliput's, where she makes a painful discovery about a coworker. Add in Grampa Jim's quest to maintain his aging dignity and baby Meredith's burgeoning curiosity, and you get a full dose of life.
For Better or For Worse has appealed to readers for more than 25 years. It runs in more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S., Canada, and 20 other countries and is translated into eight languages besides English.

Never Wink at a Worried Woman.......2007-05-15
What hasn't already been said about For Better or For Worse- it's all true. Not many cartoons can stand up to these.
Who could not relate the the Pattersons.......2007-03-30
First I'm prejudice. There has never been a "For Better/For Worst" book that I have not liked. With that said, this was most enjoyable. Seeing Jim and El start really thinking of retirement and the kids growing up.
Good.......2006-02-25
This book... I can't say it any rates. I collect ALL of books that Lynn Johnston writes. :)
The latest compilation of "For Better or For Worse" newspaper comic strips.......2005-11-12
Never Wink at a Worried Woman is the latest compilation of "For Better or For Worse" newspaper comic strips, following the daily life of the Patterson family - parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and friends. Unlike the majority of comic strips, in which the family (and its children!) never age and remain bizarrely the same from year to year, "For Better or For Worse" embraces the realism of advancing years and the toll that changes in the seasons have on life. In Never Wink at a Worried Woman, Elly and John are carefully beginning to think about retirement, while Elizabeth approaches adulthood, Micheal and Deanna try to balance the demands of being new parents, and baby Meredith is bursting with curiosity about the world around her while Grandpa Jim strives to maintain his dignity despite the toll of age. The warm, soulful humor of the comic retains a fresh, empathic charm, all needed more desperately than ever in today's era of sarcasm, shallowness and sound bites. Highly recommended.
Another winner.......2005-10-28
This treasury by Lynn Johnston is another winner. Taking a very close look at the children this time around, the comic strips are a pure joy.
Buy this one and enjoy.
Book Description
It seems to happen overnight. One minute your daughter is wearing bunny slippers and demanding bedtime stories. The next, she's wearing a midriff-baring tee shirt and demanding the car keys.
8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter takes us shriek by shriek through the process of raising teenage girls, including braces (the most expensive metal on earth), the telephone (seemingly wired to her nervous system), and, of course, dating (Rule #2: Keep your hands and eyes off my daughter's body, or I will remove them)

8 Simple Rules.......2007-01-29
Great book...laughed out loud, sometimes with people staring at me like I was crazy. Very entertaining!!! More please!
Laughter forever!.......2006-08-29
This is hands-down the funnies book I've ever read. If you don't laugh out loud every page something is seriously wrong.
"8 Simple rules" - is it helpful.......2006-03-16
This is a good book to read on a train, but if you are looking for help in guiding you with communication help, keep searching...
Bad Parenting 101.......2005-03-20
Looking at the reviews here, it seems that a lot of people can relate to the author's experiences. Basically what that tells me is that there is a lot of bad parenting going on these days. For example, when I was growing up, I never talked back to my parents or slammed my bedroom door in protest to something they did or said. In fact, I never even THOUGHT about it. If I had ever done such a thing, I guarantee you it would've never happened more than once!! Mind you, my dad was not a cruel man and not really very strict, but being disrespectful (like the kids are in this book) was something that was simply not tolerated. My mom recently told me a story - the first time my parents took me to a restaurant when I was little and I started screaming and carrying on like most kids do, my dad took me out to the parking lot and beat my a**. After that, they never had any problems with me in public again. I guess there's nothing like a belt to make a misbehaving kid see the error of their ways :)
When I first started reading this book, I thought some of the stories were pretty funny, but in a sad sort of way. As I kept reading, I began to think that this guy was simply unfit to be a parent. Hint: If your kids act this way, you might try a little thing called discipline instead of letting your kids walk all over you.
So totally typical - we had 6 teens at once many years ago.......2005-03-13
Totally love the fact Bruce is so "right on" with his descriptions of teen-age girls; I'm so glad a TV series followed this book, allowing even more parents to be exposed to his works; if you only have time to read one book, make this the one ... but try to also find time for Cameron's second book, How To Remodel A Husband ... it's just as funny, if not even funnier, than this one...anyone who has a husband can relate, in one form or another, the same as any parent can relate to 8 Simple Rules.
As parents - now grandparents - of teenage girls (as well as teen boys), we've seen at least once, everything Bruce has written about teens. Oh, what memories!
Amazon.com
A comic survival guide to being a parent of teenage daughters, Bruce Cameron's book started life in 1995 as a wildly, and accidentally, successful Internet column. In short, sharply observed vignettes, he touches a middle-aged-male nerve by describing the rage and bewilderment of having little girls turn into teenage monsters, but every complaint is punctured by a self-deprecating regular-guy-in-a-mad-world irony. There are helpful hints (or rather, unhelpful ones, because Cameron admits that nothing will make any difference) for coping with the telephone, clothes, parties, car you used to own, and boyfriend you don't want her to hang around with.
It's all rather reminiscent of Dave Barry, though of course Cameron's canvas is smaller, and for that reason alone, many readers will find that a whole book is a stretch. This is definitely a bathroom browse rather than material for reading cover to cover--assuming it's possible to get into the bathroom, that is; according to the author, this is a coveted parking space for strange aliens who paint themselves for hours while dreaming of Brad Pitt. --Richard Farr
Book Description
Fathers may suspect it's not easy for their daughters to become women, but those same daughters have no idea how hard it is for fathers to stand by and watch. According to W. Bruce Cameron, "Having a child mutate into a teenager is a bit like being an airline passenger who must suddenly take over for a stricken pilot and land the plane. And in this case, the passengers are all yelling, 'I have you! I hate you!' and slamming the door to the cockpit."
Cameron has two daughters, so he is doubly aware that raising teenage girls is well, impossible. He's been through braces (the most expensive metal on earth), kissing (do they have to use their lips?), teen "logic" ("I asked if I could go out with Lindsey and you said no, so I went out with Courtney"), and, of course, dating, which leads to the 8 Simple Rules. (Rule #1: if you pull into my driveway and honk, you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure as heck not picking anything up.)
If your little girl has moved out and a teenager has taken her place, this book will help you do something you probably thought was not possible in your situation: laugh.
Customer Reviews:
great gift for a dad.......2007-01-21
This book is great. It is an entertaining easy read and even though I am not a teenage girl anymore, I got the book for my father for this past Christmas and he loved it. I totally recommend this book to anyone who is either a daughter or has raised one!
Great Book.......2004-03-08
I thought this book was very good. W. Bruce Cameron uses humor to discuss a somewhat serious topic. Other than humor, Cameron does not use many other devices to develop his topic. Cameron tries to warn fathers in this book about the different ways teenage daughters do take advantage of not only their fathers, but also other members of the family. I believe he wrote this book to not only warn family members, especially fathers, but to also write a humorous enjoyable book. This book is not only for fathers, but I think that it gives teenage girls a new perspective of how fathers feel when the girl leaves and goes on a date. I know I will definently think about my father the next time I go on a date.
Not Just For Dad's.......2002-05-12
I bought this book for my husband who could use some lightening up when it comes to our teenage daughters. Glancing through it I found myself laughing my head off. I kept setting it down and picking it up, until I finally gave in and read the entire book. Incredibly a funny true to life! I learned more from this book than I do from many parenting materials. If not for Bruce Cameron I would still be wondering why my daughter connects with her dad like a weed whacker connects with a steal pole. To raise a teen you have to have a sense of humor and here is one dad who is an expert in both humor and being an observant father. Very Funny and fun to read for EVERYONE with a daughter over 10 years of age. An absolute must for EVERY Dad!!!
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!.......2002-03-03
I am neither the mother of a teenage girl or a teenage girl, but I used to be. This is the funniest book I've read in a while. Dave, I mean Bruce hits the nail right on the head. I hope he writes one about raising his son. He sounds like good material all by himself.
Obvious Humor.......2002-02-01
I dunno, the other reviewers thought this was a hoot, but I thought the humor was pretty obvious for the most part. Yes, I occasionally laughed aloud, and the very last chapter was particularly good. Occasionally Cameron comes up with a particularly apt turn-of-phrase that evokes a chuckle, or an extraordinarily inappropriate one that brings smiles. But you know, we've heard most of this before. How funny is it that teenage girls are on the phone all the time and that your phone bills are going to be twice the GNP of an impoverished African country? ...Buy it if you need a book for the bathroom desparately, otherwise, pass...Cameron is no Dave Barry.

Jimi Hendrix - iSong CD-ROM:.......2007-05-24
Doesn't Work at All-On My Mac
either System 9 or System 10
Jimi Hendrix.......2006-07-03
I am a great Hendrix fan and have read many books about him. But I like this book because it is easy for kids to read (I have it on the free-read bookshelf in my classroom) and it does not pass judgment on Jimi's lifestyle. It reveals his drug use and other destrcutive tendencies but doesn't judge him. The author relates the story of his life with honesty and compassion. There is a new edition by Rebecca Poole that uses a lot of the material from this original edition, but isn't as accurate.
Obsolete Technology with No Access.......2006-05-21
Although this is described as Mac compatible, this application requires OS9 which is not well supported by Apple anymore. Trying it on Windows produced mediocre results. Don't waste your money on this! Even when running, it is not effective.
Jimi Hendrix.......2002-10-31
I thought this book was very helpful in my everyday life. This book will enforce your mind to think of the capabilities of the guitar. Jimi Hendrix is great and deserves this book about him, that depicts his life story.
Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story.......2001-05-30
Though a little over a hundred pages of biographical detail is intended largely for advanced elementary grade levels, many an adult with a special interest in Jimi Hendrix's rock music will find themselves reading this biography of the musician's short but notable life. From a poor background in a home marked by an alcoholic mother, Hendrix rose to become a star. Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story and profound influences on American popular music.

Customer Reviews:
Yeah, it does suck.......2007-04-11
I've been playing poker since 2003, and I've faired pretty well. I realize that I still have a lot to learn, but I've won a few local tournaments and made some money here and there.
I purchased this book to accompany me on a business trip last year, and I had not really got very far through it. Recently I picked it up and started to work my way through the book. I got about half way through and realized that this book is by far the worst poker book I've ever read. Actually, I think I read one that was slightly worse, but this is darn close.
In the last section I was reading that professional players use advanced math and clever calculations to figure out if they are getting the right pot odds to make a call. Now I already know that, and have for some time. In fact watching poker on TV will teach you that. Heck I even know how to do this math in my head. But for some reason this book neglects to cover these skills.
Having read this fact I began to realize that this book tells you that stuff is going on, but gives you no tools to realize how to do it yourself. It's like saying, "Tiger Woods hits the golf ball with tremendous accuracy and power, allowing him to drive the ball great distances and more often than not he gets it to land very close to the pin. You will want to do this too if you expect to win a major golf tournament."
The book is full of pearls of wisdom like this. I came here to read the other reviews, since I have only read half the book. But unless the other reviews are wrong, and the back half of this book is completely different this book is a total waste of time.
I suggest you read the Harrington on Hold'em set of books if you really want to do well in a tournament. The only thing this book might be useful for is letting a newbie player know that poker is harder than it looks. Of course it won't tell you how to improve, merely that you need to.
Save your money for a betterbook.......2005-09-23
Got to agree with the other reviewer(s), if this had zero starts, that'd be my rating.
I'd like to encourage Tom to continue writing, as his articles published in well know trade magazines are quite good.
Easily the most pathetic poker book I have ever read!!!.......2005-09-03
Of the 10-15 poker books I have purchased, this is easily the biggest waste of money. The practice questions were fit for a 3rd grader and I can honestly say I leared less than nothing. I take that back, I learned that I know a little about poker already.
Save your money, purchase dan harringtons books instead.

Motivation.......2007-09-21
If you want to be motivated or if the market is down and discouraging you. This book will inspire you to get back in the world of trading and teach you basic trading techniques that are still applicable today.
Not that impressed.......2007-09-16
If your buying this book to learn how to buy stocks save your money. Nicolas Darvas isn't all that clear on his strategy and there are better books out there on the subject. On the other hand its a nice quick read if you like to read true success stories.
Not worth the time........2007-08-16
This book is boring- repeating the same experiences that didn't work with all the details on every one. What's good about it (there is some) is of limited value in today's marketplace, and you have to sort it out of all the filler. Overall, if you are trying to learn how to invest wisely- it provides more confusion that it clears up, and thus is a waste of time.
I've been managing my own investments for 7 years, and typically make about 20% annual. Neither novice nor expert, I read to learn more.. but like stocks- some books sound a lot better than they are. I can't see this book as being of much value at any experience level.
The method of Nicolas Darvas makes sense!.......2007-07-15
How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market by Nicolas Darvas.
Making money in stocks depends on what you think at the time you make an entry or exit. Not all investors think alike since every time you buy there is a seller on the other side or vise versa. (Zero Sum Game)
You either go up the staircase, stand on the staircase or go down the staircase. Very simple method to understand but most investors just don't get it and try to make trading stocks much more complicated. If you cannot climb the stair's why even be in that stock? Some trader's are even backtesting the Darvas method if it really works. There is no quick fix on WallStreet to learn how to trade. Nothing can backtest the coming future of any trade that is largely depends on your experience and your judgement and how you exit a trade.
The Darvas method is good read and good concept although a lot of reviewer's here cast their doubt's about this PRICE box method. Trading is a battle within yourself as you gain more experience to become a better trader. It takes time for you to set-up a method that works for you and have confidence in your own method. If you trade full-time it takes you less time to become skillful since you work at it every day even if you do trade using the Darvas method. The Darvas method is based on PRICE not on a stock indicator. When I think of the Davas BOX its like an old BOX camera they still work very well even today.
He did it in a bull market.......2007-07-03
Nicolas Darvas wrote a very entertaining book. Maybe the fact that I'm half Hungarian added to the vicarious enjoyment. His early misadventures touched a raw nerve. His remarks about the high cost of trading in the bad old days reminded me of why I switched to an online broker. While reading the book I broke out in laughter several times.
I was so intrigued by the box model that I created a computer model to test it. The results were a disappointment. While I didn't test it with too many stocks, I ran the tests with growers like BLWD, AAPL, and CMG. Darvas stated that he invested in growth stocks even if he didn't call them that and I tried to mimic his style as closely as possible. To give an example, over a period of 18 month from Jan 2006 to June 2007, the model traded BWLD five times, two winners and three losers for a net gain of 11% over 18 months. Improving the stops might have increased the yield to around 16%. That's nothing to write home about. During that same period of time the Dow 30 advanced 16% (annualized percentages).
Some seven years ago I played around with another computer model based on crossing the various DMA lines. The stocks I used were the tech darlings of the bubble era. I used real price data from the '90s. The model made Warren Buffet look like a rank amateur, it was producing yields well in excess of 50% and it generated a very concentrated portfolio even when I fed it data for over 100 stocks. When I tested the same model in a bear market scenario it came out even, losing the trade commissions.
Why the long story? Because I'm trying to put Darvas' achievement in perspective. From Jan 1957 to Dec 1958 the Dow 30 yielded 24% annualized, about three times its long term average. Darvas used an enormous amount of leverage or margin, more than most of us can obtain today and certainly much more than I would ever be willing to risk. Darvas must have had very good income from his dancing to dare risk that much. He did keep is income and his investing funds separate. Darvas was also very astute in his stock picking. The Soviets launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957 and America was feverishly trying to catch up. Kennedy was a good speechmaker.
I believe that an extraordinary number of favorable circumstances came together in a very fortuitous way to enable Darvas to achieve his feat. From $25K to $2.25M in two years is an annualized return of 843%. As they say on TV, "Don't try this at home." :)
