    Book Description

At the time of his tragic death in 1972, aged 30, Tony Ray-Jones had already made an indelible mark on photography. Developing his vision in New York and expressing it in his affectionate and ironic studies of the British at leisure, he was almost single--handedly responsible for the birth of contemporary art-photography in Britain. Produced in association with the National Museum of Photography and accompanying its major new touring exhibition, this fresh look at his work introduces the best of his -photographs-previously unpublished, and beautifully reproduced from revealing new prints-with original documents and artefacts from the museum's Ray-Jones archive. With an introductory essay by Russell Roberts, the National Museum's director of -photography.

I love every other book he has written. This one is completely different. I may not have liked it because it wasn't what I was expecting, but I could not finish it.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-25

I really enjoyed this book and would have given it a 5 rating, but it was about 100 pages too long. The book gives great insight not only to WW II but it also gives insight into Berlin during the time of the Berlin Wall. There were a few characters that were not necessary to the story and plot line, but Mr. Iles kept my attention throughout the overlong book. It was my 1st novel by Mr. Iles but I will definately try another.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-05

Its amazing what you're willing to do to pass time in the desert. Reading was never something to interest me. However, after reading Spandau Phoenix I intend to read more of Iles's work.

WWII has always been an interesting subject for me and this book is just brilliant. It educates and entertains at the same time with a believable story. The book explores the conspiracy theory of deputy fuhrer Rudolph Hess of Nazi Germany and his flight to England. It defines a master plan made by the Fuhrer himself to ultimatly control all of Europe with the help of an unlikely allie. All this and more is revealed slowely as you turn pages and get more indepth of a new secret ploy ran by a ghost from the past.

Whith so many good things to say, I did find some things to fault. There tends to be to many characters to keep track of at times, some of which roles could have been eliminated completely. As another reviewer ponited out, at the end when the character in question is faced with the question, "why?". I expected Iles to explore the reasons from the point of view of a Nazi Character. It was a dissapointment. Then again it could be brilliance not to answer "why?". Whatever happened then, whatever reasons there were, maybe its best for the dead to bury the dead.

3 out of 5 stars Complicated and overwrought.......2006-03-25

Having previously read Greg Iles's "Dead Sleep" which I thoroughly enjoyed and found to be both creepy and exciting, I approached this one with a lot of eagerness and interest.

After about page 70, I was starting to get frustrated by the way the novel unfolded, but decided to stay with it. Although I was pleased to finish it, I found the story line to be overly complicated, filled with too many characters and overwrought in its execution. Things were too loose and the story although at times a bit infeasible would be of much higher quality if tightened up a bit, with more focus and less switching from scene to scene.

The subject matter was very interesting and would have been handled in a more capable manner by the likes of Ken Follett, Nelson DeMille or Frederick Forsyth.

              1 out of 5 stars not a pleasant read.......2006-01-22

greg iles is one of my favourite author but this book is such a downer..
i tried reading it and fell asleep twice that in the end i gave up even before reaching page 100...
if jeffrey archer was to write this story i'm sure he would;ve done a good job...
the book was too long, it;s confusing and just plain boring..
i was really dissapointed as i am a HUGE fan of his books especially blood memory and sleep no more
wish it could've been better..really do

Normally, I wouldn't think of buying this kind of book, but it's been a GREAT addition to our bathroom; we love it! What I love about this bathroom reader book is that all the passages are good, readible sizes, nothing's too long that you have to continue reading it in another sitting (ha-ha). :-) There are some informative sections and some funnies, and interesting quotes. It's a sizeable book that contains many things you'd normally not hear about - the CIA and LSD experimentations (dates back to the Nazi's), people famous for being naked (pg. 157), and a quiz section about law, etc!

You never know what the next page will reveal, it's always a surprise. I also enjoy the bottom of the pages that give you one line info tidbits such as "How can you tell when a kangaroo is nervous? It licks its forearms. Nobody knows why." Interesting! And...."20% of drivers get 80% of the traffic tickets".....and finally "60% of pets in Great Britain have some form of health insurance". Great facts that you'd normally not read elsewhere. This book has 500 pages, lots of reading, and we were surprised it's so interesting. I will definitely buy another edition of this BRI (Bathroom Reader's Institute) Series. Probably great to give as gifts (for fun).

Enjoy and remember like the book says "Go with the flow".

5 out of 5 stars My Boss Hates this book, but we love it!!!.......2003-12-04

A co-worker brought this book into our work and put it in the bathroom. Ever since, all of my co-worker's bathroom breaks have gotten a little longer than usual. It is a wonderful thing for any bathroom. The content is absolutely fascinating and the passages are short enough that it doesn't take a long time to finish each one.

But beware!!! Especially bosses out there who don't want their employees taking long bathroom breaks. When this book is put into a bathroom, the bathroom suddenly becomes one of the most popular rooms in the place.

5 out of 5 stars Great for anytime.......1999-12-14

This book is absolutely a must if you love to read. It has everything from funny quotes and happenings to the history of late-night TV. Also, there is a little known or interesting fact on the bottom of every page. Since I received this book for Christmas last year, I have increased my knowledge of completely irrelevant, but interesting facts by at least 40%. This is great not only for when natures calls, but for long car trips, and whenever you run out of good reading material (which, despite all the magazines I get, seems to happen much too often.)

                      Book Description

James Bond would have died a thousand deaths if not for Q, the genius behind the pen grenades and weaponized sports cars that have helped Britain's most famous secret agent cheat death in twenty films. Here Barry Parker demonstrates how science and technology have been as important to 007 as good looks, shaken martinis, and beautiful women.

Using entertaining sketches and nontechnical language, Parker explains the basic physics behind the gadgets, cars, and stunts in a number of Bond films, from the jet packs in Thunderball to the dynamics of daredevil bungee jumping in GoldenEye.

If you've ever wondered whether the laser could have actually cut Bond in half (Goldfinger), if a wristwatch could really unzip a woman's dress (Live and Let Die), or whether your car could do the 360-degree barrel roll from The Man with the Golden Gun, this book is for you.

" Top 5 Bond Stunts of All Time" Q and His "Amazing" Devices" The Bond Cars in All Their Glory" Moonraker and Bond in Space" The Walther PPK and the Ballistics of Bond" The Neptune and Battles Aquatic

4 out of 5 stars Very little in the way of physical explanations for how the devices might work.......2007-05-31

While this book is very interesting to read, that interest is generated more by the descriptions of the movies than it is by the explanation of the physics. Parker is clearly a huge fan of 007 James Bond and he lists the movies, the actors that played Bond, the plots and all the incredible stunts and gadgets carried out and used by the super spy. However, there is relatively little space devoted to the physics of the stunts or the devices. There are images of some of the most memorable vehicles as well as simple pictures of Bond's favorite pistol and a GPS receiver. I didn't do a precise count, but it seemed that images of the devices outnumbered the images similar to those you would find in a standard physics textbook.
Don't misunderstand; I loved this book, the summaries of the movie plots kept my interest throughout. However, that is what it really is and the sections where the physics is described generally seem to be an afterthought rather than the primary point of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Physics of James Bond.......2006-07-13

This book discusses physics as applied to the world of James Bond 007, but is done for more of entertainment value. It should not be taken to be a serious book, but rather for pleasure. The physics is rather basic/simple in nature, lacking any real depth of content, but does address some physical concepts that 007 may be up against.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting Descriptions and Simple Formulas.......2006-02-20

When I bought this book, I was expecting some brief descriptions of the various stunts, gadgets and weapons used in the James Bond movies, along with a brief scientific critique of how realistic they are (or could be) in real life. Although the book's content wasn't quite like that, I did thoroughly enjoy it. The author, who clearly appears to be an avid James Bond fan, has written a book that seems to have a double focus: (i) to describe several scenes from all the James Bond movies along with a summary of each of the plots, and (ii) to describe some of the physics involved regarding some of the stunts, gadgets, weapons and technology portrayed in these movies. The scene descriptions that are presented are very exciting and well detailed (in some cases, too detailed), but most are without commentary on the reality of the physics involved; some of these descriptions are repeated in the book. The physics that is described, complete with simple formulas, is quite entertaining, although there are several misprints and a few errors, e.g., use of "increase" when "decrease" should have been used - something that more careful editing would have easily fixed. In some cases, the author does comment on physical possibility of some of the technology used in these movies. The writing style is very engaging and the book is difficult to put down. Overall, I found this book quite entertaining. I recommend it to James Bond fans, old and new, as well as to those interested in seeing simple formulas used to describe how certain aspects of the world work.

                        Book Description

Just as the preoccupations of any given cultural moment make their way into the language of music, the experience of music makes its way into other arenas of life. To unearth these overlapping meanings and vocabularies from the Victorian era, Ruth A. Solie examines sources as disparate as journalism, novels, etiquette manuals, religious tracts, and teenagers' diaries for the muffled, even subterranean, conversations that reveal so much about what music meant to the Victorians. Her essays, giving voice to "what goes without saying" on the subject--that cultural information so present and pervasive as to go unsaid--fill in some of the most intriguing blanks in our understanding of music's history.
This much-anticipated collection, bringing together new and hard-to-find pieces by an acclaimed musicologist, mines the abundant casual texts of the period to show how Victorian-era people--English and others--experienced music and what they understood to be its power and its purposes. Solie's essays start from topics as varied as Beethoven criticism, Macmillan's Magazine, George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, opera tropes in literature, and the Victorian myth of the girl at the piano. They evoke common themes--including the moral force that was attached to music in the public mind and the strongly gendered nature of musical practice and sensibility--and in turn suggest the complex links between the history of music and the history of ideas.

I bought this one and the first one for my Mom who loves Boggle and playing word games on the computer. Great to have when you do not have internet access and need to exercise your brain. Only gave 4 out of 5 because it would be better is it was spiral bound so you could do the backside puzzles easier. Great product just keep making them thicker.

                          Book Description

Getting a new job or a big promotion is like building a house: You need to get the foundation right for both. With a job, the quick-drying cement is how well you do in your first hundred days, since they establish the foundation for long-term momentum and great performance.

Tom Neff and Jim Citrin are two of the world’s leading experts on leadership and career success. As key figures at Spencer Stuart (hailed by the Wall Street Journal as the number one brand name in executive search), they must understand the criteria for success when they recruit top executives for new leadership positions.

Through compelling, first-hand stories you will hear from people such as Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE, on how his career has been a series of successive first hundred days. Larry Summers, president of Harvard University, talks candidly about what he could have done differently in his early days to avoid dissipating goodwill among the diverse constituencies important for his future success. Gary Kusin of Kinko’s shares the specifics of the hundred-day action plan he crafted for himself before he started his new job. Paul Pressler of Gap Inc. shows how he developed a general strategic agenda that established fundamental principles and goals, waiting to prepare a more detailed strategic plan until later in his tenure.

Tom Neff and Jim Citrin’s actionable eight-point plan will be the foundation for your success—whether you are moving to a new organization or being promoted—showing how to:

                          • Prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally from the time you accept until the time you begin
                          • Manage others’ expectations of you—bosses, colleagues, and subordinates
                          • Shape and build the team that will work with you
                          • Learn the lay of the land and find out how things “really work around here”
                          • Communicate your story effectively to people inside and outside the organization
                          • Avoid the top ten traps that confront every new leader, such as disrespecting your predecessor, misreading the true sources of power in the organization, or succumbing to the “savior syndrome”

When you start a new job you are in what AOL’s Jon Miller calls a “temporary state of incompetence,” faced with having to do the most when you know the least. But with the eight-point plan of You’re in Charge—Now What? you’ll understand and be able to take action on the patterns that will build your success.

                          2 out of 5 stars Czarnecki's "You're In Charge..What Now?" Better for non-CEOs.......2007-06-17

When I saw the "Recommended for You" email, I thought Gerald Czarnecki had come out with a sequel. Instead, I find a not as elegant knock-off.

Czarnecki offers a much better, more digestible plan for those who are newly appointed in positions of management. His "Seven Essential Steps for Work Leader Success" are useful and proven techniques for those who need it the most: the everyday people in an organization who get the job done, not the Stanford-grad CEOs who have already spent years in management and academia learning the ropes. I have recommended his book to friends in just about every industry, from IT to the military. I, myself, found Czarnecki's book extremely useful as a new senior non-commissioned officer in dealing with people who became my subordinates overnight. Unfortunately, this book did not address that sort of issue.

This book isn't a terrible book by any means, and perhaps for a CEO or high-level manager it is something good. As I am neither, I didn't find it appealing. It's essentially the same information you can find elsewhere, and as a previous reviewer pointed out, the tips and techniques are more for those already in the boardroom. Go back to Czarnecki's original if you are a new manager, especially one who was promoted from within, or looking for a gift for the grad or newly promoted.
                          You're In Charge...What Now?

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful in Starting Off on the Right Foot.......2007-06-04

My executive coach recommended this book and she was right. It is very well organized with lots of examples on how to get started as the new leader in a large organization. Suitable for small but oriented towards large business of all types. Did not provide Government examples but was still very helpful. I read the book cover to cover and made lots of notes. Try to read at least 3 weeks before reporting. I am three weeks into a Government IT job with a staff of 650 and $100M in budget and all the signs are there that this book was helpful for accelerating my early take-off.

                          3 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-05-01

I bought You're in Charge... on Amazon.com. I am interested in the leadership process, how to approach new roles, some of the pitfalls, etc and thought this was a good book on the subject. I do believe that the best place to get leadership ideas and tips is from Michael Watkins' The First 90 days, but I think Thomas Neff and James Citrin provide aspiring leaders with a worthwhile book.

The best feature, although sometimes over done are the real life examples of CEO's who took the reigns, and what they did. Whether it was a turnaround situation, or continuing a legacy of success, there are some standard approaches that each of these leaders used. The premise of the book is that there are 8 steps to the new leadership process -

                          1. Prepare yourself before taking over
                          2. Align expectations (internally, externally)
                          3. Build a management team you can rely on
                          4. Build a strategy (Which includes just refining the old one)
                          5. Transform the culture to aling it with your expectations
                          6. Manage up and where influence lies (Board, boss, whoever has more power... and also manage those who have institutional influence.)
                          7. Communicate your vision, your steps in the process, strategy
                          8. Avoid common pitfalls.

Nothing really earth shattering here, but certainly good advice. The focus of the book are the steps every leader should take within the first 100 days of your tenure.

One of the more interesting parts of the book goes back to the CEO's and what they did. Since this was published in 2005, some of the CEO's haven't turned out to be the captains fo industry that they are potrayed to be (At least from a market perception perspective.). You read about Paul Pressler and Bob Nardelli and what they did in their first 100 days. Needless to say, as time passed, their reputations are somewhat tarnished now. There are others referenced as well that haven't been treated very kindly by the marketplace.

Anyhow, there is no harm in picking this up, although like I referenced before, I think there are other leadership books out there that I more worthwhile. You're in Charge tends to get a bit over done, but if you can overlook that, there are some worthwhile tips to pick up.

1 out of 5 stars Written only for CEOs.......2007-01-09

If you are a brand new CEO and need to know how to run your organization, buy this book. If you are at any lower level, this book is not meant for you.

The authors state directly from the beginning that they focus more on CEOs than most other positions but the lessons learned are applicable to anyone. This is not true. The author focus too much on the role of a CEO. The examples and suggestions are unique to that role. In one section the book describes how to find your management blind spots such as research and development, marketing, etc. If you are a software development manager in a large firm, your knowledge of marketing or R&D will most likely do little for your career. Yet this book highlights that as areas you should improve.

Another example on how the book focuses too much on CEO is displayed in the how-to-work-with-your-boss chapter. They entire chapter discusses how you should interact with the board of directors! This is a complely different relationship than what 99.9% of workers engage in. The relationship you have with your boss is possibly the most important relationship in your career. To focus this chapter on working with the board makes it absolutely useless to anyone who is not an officer or anyone that does not work for a private firm.

5 out of 5 stars Useful handbook for the new leader.......2006-01-09

The immediate task for CEOs who land a dream job is making sure it doesn't turn into a nightmare. Authors Thomas J. Neff and James M. Citrin provide a marvelous "executive how-to kit" that draws on their extensive management and consulting experience. They explain everything you need to know about getting off to an excellent start now that you're ensconced in the corner office. While the book is targeted to CEOs, it applies to anyone stepping up to a higher level of leadership. Taking over a new role often means enduring what AOL's Jon Miller describes as a "temporary state of incompetence." Even if your promotion becomes a trial by fire, we believe this book will help you direct the flames and propel your organization to new heights of achievement.

                          5 out of 5 stars A tremendous resource.......2003-11-17

Earlier this year I found myself unexpectedly thrust into a situation where I became the interim CEO of a small company. Although the book was not primarily directed at me as a CEO I found it extremely practical and helpful as I navigated my way through an unexpectedly new situation. I would recommend it for any professional or executive who must manage others who execute!

As a CPA-trained professional, one of my greatest managerial challenges was making the transition from a technician to a manager and a leader. I wish I had this book to guide me through that difficult process. My learning curve would have been much faster and certainly more successful. I highly recommend this book to first-time supervisors, as well as experienced managers. The concepts and lessons are intuitive, insightful and timeless. This is required reading for anyone who has responsibility for managing other individuals.

As a CEO of a financial services company, I receive many books to review that are primarily focused on strategy or vision. While both of those are important to the healthy growth of a company, I tend to see the same philosophies described in different words. This book is different. It reveals the principles of leading in a refreshingly simple manner. The focus of the book is achieving results through leadership and it offers powerful insights to all levels of management. Our executives and management team intend to recommend it to all those in a leadership role and to those who desire to lead in the future
