    Book Description

For twenty-five years, Robin Kinross has been making a case for typography as a matter of fine detail and subtle judgment, whose products concern all of us, every day. This selection of his writings-including some previously unpublished-brings his major themes into focus: the unsung virtues of editorial design and information design, the fate of Modernism in the twentieth century, and the virtues of a socially oriented design approach. His much sought-after and out-of-print pamphlet Fellow Readers (1994) is reprinted in full.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, as usual.......2007-05-29

The Calvin and Hobbes collection is filled with all the usual inventions and wild imagination as Calvin hurtles through the forest on his cart or sled, torments neighbor Suzie or drives his parents up the wall. The title comes from the hilarious serialised strips where Calvin's snowmen come alive and chase after him. It's absolutely a must-have, must-read!

And I DO believe that Hobbes comes alive when no one else is around.

      1 out of 5 stars Depressing..........2006-12-13

An only, lonely child. Bullied at school. Clearly a genius level intellect, he's unchallenged and stifled since nobody, not his parents, and not even his teacher, recognizes this. A father who's always too busy to spend any time with his son. A father who's often seen, get this, reading --*reading* -- rather than paying his only son some attention! A mother, who literally, in strip after strip, throws him out the door. Throws, as in "child flying through the air". A child, and a small child at that, allowed repeatedly to wander alone through the woods! A child denied even a pet. His only friend -- a stuffed tiger.
Makes the "Peanuts" look like "The Family Circus".

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-11-10

I love readding Calvin and Hobbes. Best cartoon from the newspaper and great books. What a great imagination the writer is.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Way To Enjoy Calvin And Hobbes.......2006-10-19

I suppose this could apply to any Calvin and Hobbes collection (not just Attack of the Deranged..., but let me share my favorite way to read Calvin and Hobbes.

If possible, I like to pick a rainy Saturday or Sunday. I'm usually already bored and wandering around the cold house. I catch sight of a Calvin and Hobbes book and read a few pages, but my fingers are cold and I can't concentrate.

So I make a steaming cup of my favorite tea and a piece of toast with lots of butter, wrap up in a blanket on the couch, and sit and read straight through.

It's so comforting to listen to the rain and read Calvin and Hobbes. There's just something about it.

Er, see other reviews for information about this actual book.

5 out of 5 stars Calvin and Hobbes is Entertainment at its Best.......2006-09-18

Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes wreck havoc as usual in this awesome collection of Watterson's timeless comic. Whether Calvin's wild imagination is dreaming of prehistoric dinosaurs or planning a mischevious attack on his arch-rival (fellow classmate Suzie Derkins), you're sure to enjoy the unexplainable antics of this troublesome six year old boy.

This particular collection starts with a series of cartoons depicting Calvin with chicken pox. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as he finds out he's contagious, he invites Suzie over to play. That crazy kid.

Individual comics follow, but then another series emerges - one where Calvin's bike attacks him upon every attempt at riding it, and his parents remain clueless about how his face could EVER get caught in the bike's chain.

In another series, we see Calvin's "Get Rid Of Slimy girlS" club planning a failed water balloon assault on Suzie, resulting in the disappearance of Hobbes. Hobbes does some smooching with the enemy and is labeled as a traitor.

We also see Calvin struggling in math, losing a 25 cent bet to Suzie after failing a quiz. He spends all his test time daydreaming he's interplanetary hero Spaceman Spiff, and is only able to do one lousy problem.

When the Christmas season approaches, poor Calvin has to avoid throwing snowballs at Suzie so he won't lose any of his Christmas loot.

The amusing title series of this collection is definitely one of my favorites. Calvin builds monster snowmen that (in his mind anyway) come to life and threaten his existence, so he freezes the whole front yard with the garden hose to protect himself, much to the dismay of his father.

Last but not least, Calvin builds a human duplicating machine out of a cardboard box, and he makes a special copy of himself that represents everything good in him. His plan is to make his flawless duplicate do all of his homework and chores, while he himself gets all the credit. Everything goes fine for a while, until his duplicate develops a crush on Suzie, making him look bad. Hilarity ensues.

Inbetween each of the series are individual comic strips with recurring themes. Open-minded Calvin bugs his parents with questions like, "Why do I have to play outside?" "Why can't we watch TV during dinner?" "If we were cannibals, what parts of people would we eat?" Calvin also grosses out Suzie at every opportunity whenever it's time for lunch at school.

We see Calvin engaging in some of his less frequent behaviors as well, such as digging for dinosaur bones in the front yard and demanding his parents and teachers address him as "Calvin the Bold."

Great, great collection. I loved it years ago and still love it today. Best comic ever in my opinion.

This is the second of three little books, published in the UK, that contain the exact material of the very first Calvin and Hobbes book. I bought this book thinking it had something new in it, but I didn't realize it contained the same material as a book I already had.

It's probably a better investment just to go ahead and buy the first Calvin and Hobbes book (titled Calvin and Hobbes). Everybody loves C&H; who doesn't know a little boy somewhere "just like Calvin"?

          Book Description

Hattie McDaniel was the first black to ever win an Oscar. She was also the first black woman to ever sing on American radio. In this fresh assessment of her life and career, Carlton Jackson tells the inside story of her working relationships, her personal life, and the many obstacles she faced as a black performer in the white world of show business during the first half of the twentieth century.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is the 2nd bio of Hattie McDaniel I've Read.......2006-07-05

I read this because it was cited in "Hattie McDaniel:White Hollywood, Black Ambition." This was written sometime ago and I believe the author was able to interview people who knew her. There was more revealing information about her sad final days. However, if there was an epilogue written to this book today, it would add that she has received recognition by being featured on the U.S. Postage stamp in 2006, over 50 years after her death.

1 out of 5 stars Scissors and paste job full of errors.......2005-06-24

The author uses lots of footnotes to impress the reader. This
book is full of errors like saying Lilian Randolph played Beulah
and that Hattie did not film any episodes of the TV series (when
there are 3 available on video). One wonders, too, if the author
saw any of her films other than GONE WITH THE WIND and THE GREAT
LIE. This book was slapped together to coincide with one of the
re-release dates of GONE WITH THE WIND. It is a pity because Hattie paved the way for all the African-American stars of today and deserves a real biography instead of this piece of crap.

4 out of 5 stars Hattie McDaniel Lovingly Remembered.......2005-06-18

I was thrilled to stumble upon a hardcover copy of "Hattie: The Life of Hattie McDaniel" while browsing in a local used bookstore. Some minor factual errors aside, this well-deserved biography provides a moving look inside the life of one of America's most beloved character actresses. Carlton Jackson's flowing narrative is engaging, and it draws you in to Miss McDaniels' persona, private (and sometimes public) struggles, to better understand the scope of what her professional achievements really meant to her, to Hollywood and to society as a whole. This book was a welcomed addition to my book collection and I trust that it will be to any other classic film fan's, too!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book with a couple of glitches.......2005-01-28

Considering how important Hattie McDaniel is to American movie history both for her talents and achievements, I've been surprised there are not more books about her. I was glad to discover Carlton Jackson's book. I'll mention the glitches first since I want to end on a positive note. Mr. Jackson mentions the constant confusion between Hattie, Louise Beavers, and Ethel Waters and this seems to extend to the copy editor and even Mr. Jackson himself. On Page 34 (paperback)it says "It is our intention to publicize her name as Hattie McDaniel, instead of 'the colored woman who was in Imitation of Life'....We have a feeling that Louise Beavers, cast in important pictures, can do much to enhance their entertainment value." I had to read this a few times before I realized the editor was confused and it should read "...publicize her name as Louise Beavers", since Hattie was not in that movie. This happens a few times throughout the book. And at the end, Mr. Jackson compares Hattie's funeral to a scene from Imitation of Life, but Hattie was NEVER in that movie, so it muddles things again. A factual mistake occurs on page 113 when mentioning James Baskett, who played Uncle Remus in Song of the South. Mr. Jackson states that he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Not true. Harold Russell won for The Best Years of Our Lives. Mr. Baskett was not nominated for an Oscar. He was, however, presented with a special Oscar for his performance as Uncle Remus. It's a minor thing, but does raise concerns about accuracy, since that is such an easy thing to check out. Anyway, glitches aside, I found this book to be very enjoyable and informative about Hattie McDaniel's life and career. The pages of pictures are a treat as well. The picture of her at age 15 is just beautiful. The book was worth the price and is a great read and should satisfy the reader until someone does a more in-depth and longer biography of this wonderful woman.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening&respectful bio of an overlooked entertainer.......2000-03-02

Carlton Jackson has done a concise, literate job delving into the life and work of Hattie McDaniel. Not only do you get a clear sense of who she was and her talent as a performer, but also of the context and times in which she lived. Jackson sheds much-needed light on a seldom-seen side of Hollywood - the black side - as well as the struggles between commerce & equality that still exist today. Reading about the NAACP protests against Hollywood vis a vis lack of opportunities for blacks is like reading today's headlines. But more importantly, getting a proper sense of who Hattie McDaniel was and her professional legacy are the primary reasons to read this book.

            Book Description

Native Americans supplied the maracas. African slaves brought drums and ritual music, and Spaniards brought guitars, brass instruments, and clarinets along with European ballroom dancing. The advent of blues and jazz gave new forms to styles of songs, notably feeling songs, which joined the more traditional styles of trova and bolero. Cuban culture represents a convergence of these diverse backgrounds, and the musical heritage presented in this book reflects these traditions as well. In colonial times, African ritual sounds mixed with Catholic liturgies and brass bands of the Spanish military academies. Ballroom dances, including French music from Haiti popular in 18th-century Havana society, existed side by side with the cabildos (guilds and carnival clubs) and the plantations. The son, considered the expression of Cuban musical identity, had its origins in a rural setting in which African slaves and small farmers from Andalusia worked and played music together, developing many variations over the years, including big band music. Cuban music is now experiencing a major renaissance, and is enjoyed throughout the world.

Hispanic American Historical Review August 2003
Roy's book is an introduction to Cuban music, stressing its deep historical background, concentrating on a few crucial artists, and drawing a line at the borders of Cuba itself. Roy's strength lies in her explanation of musical structure and in the excerpts she provides from interviews with Cuban musicians, ranging from vaunted composers to local buskers. She provides an insightful description of the major typologies of rumba, ably sketching their common threads and linking their differences to contextual factors such as contrasting practices of urban and rural leisure. In addition, in letting the musicians speak for themselves, she comes closest to translating both the joy and the intricacy of the music. She transcribes the words of a Havana rumbero, who recalls unlocking the secret of a local refrain, "Rabo de mono amarra a Ramon [the monkey's tale wraps up Ramon]" (p.56). The phrase, nearly an aural palindrome, reveals the foundational influence of both medieval Spanish verse, with its complex verbal doublings, and central African tales of trickster deities in the guise of animals. The requisite musical response, discovered by the rumbero in the midst of improvisation-"Por que rabo de mono no me amarra a mi? (Why doesn't the monkey's tail wrap up me?)"-adds the elements of thinly veiled sexuality and gamesmanship, completing the rumba palette. On one hand, Roy asserts that in the early decades of the twentieth century in Cuba, "everything African was considered by the dominant elite to be lowly, vulgar and uncultured" (p. 30). But she provides ample evidence of Cuban elites of the period enjoying Afro-Cuban music, in contexts ranging from carnival street processions to their own salons and concert halls. Exploring the coexistence of a rhetoric of disdain and repression with everyday practices of sponsorship and participation would help to illuminate not only Cuban music but also the knotty issues of race on the island.

            ~New West Indian Guide
The recent deaths of singers Celia Cruz, also known as La Guarachera de Oriente, and Maximo Francisco Repilado Mufioz, better known as Compay Segundo in the Buena Vista Social Club film, point to the end of a cultural period in the history of Cuban music. Although together they represent the "commercial Golden Age" of Cuban music before the 1959 revolution, individually they represent antagonistic political views regarding the future of their Caribbean nation and their musical expressions. Until his death, Compay Segundo toured the world as a cultural ambassador of the Cuban government, while Celia Cruz joined the Miami-based Cuban exile movement becoming its spokeswoman in the popular music field. Therefore, the following question remains: apart from creating the musical genres songo and timba, what has the Cuban Revolution accomplished in terms of musical evolution?
This is precisely one of the strong points of this English edition of Maya Roy's Cuban Music (translated from the French by Denise Asfar and Gabriel Asfar). Politically objective, devoid of racial and class prejudices, and written in clear and simple language, the book reviews the history of Cuban music from its sixteenth-century origins to the present, including Amerindian, African, and Spanish influences in the formation of a national Cuban music at the end of the nineteenth century. A brief look at its table of contents indicates that Roy employs a modern approach, beginning with the social significance of music and following with brief descriptions of their musical characteristics and typical instrumentation. Her information and analysis is based on personal interviews with musicians and modern musico-logical and historical studies by Cuban scholars; Alejo Carpentier, Fernando Ortiz, Leonardo Acosta, Maria Teresa Linares are among those she cites most frequently. No wonder Juan Flores (professor at Hunter College in the City University of New York and author of many books and articles, including From Bomba to Hip-Hop [2000]) calls it, in the book's preface, "the best survey of Cuban music available."
The book is divided into nine chapters with a complete, up-to-date bibliography of primary sources and a selected discography of Cuban music. It also includes a handy glossary of terms.
Roy establishes her theoretical framework in the introduction. The study of Cuban music evolves from the study of the general history of the island, "a history marked by colonization, the almost complete eradication of its indigenous peoples and slavery." The next eight chapters are dedicated to the description of the different musical genres, styles, and forms, their typical instrumentation, and their musical history, always rooted on the historical, economic, political, and cultural history of Cuba. These are: ritual music, rumba, punto y tonadas, danzon, three variants of The Song (trova, bolero, and "Feeling"), and the national music known internationally as son, which has spread to the whole Caribbean region. The important influence of French-Haitian music in the formation of national forms and the development of the famous rhythmic pattern that identified the Cuban national forms known by specialists as the cinquillo cubano are also included. Chapter 8 is dedicated to a description of the history of music in Cuba since the 1959 revolution and the emergence of two new musical forms: songo and timba. It also contains an excellent description and an objective analysis of the present Cuban government's policies regarding all aspects of musical phenomena (creation, production, and distribution) and its continuous support of popular and classical music research and education. The last chapter deals with the disjunction of two traditions in Cuban music: music before the Revolution, exemplified by the Buena Vista Social Club, and music after the Revolution, mainly songo and timba. Roy concludes in a conciliatory tone:
it is becoming clear that the call for reconciliation between Cubans on the island and those outside, which is clearly transmitted through the music, is in fact being heard. For music, no matter where it originates, has neither borders nor color, as long as it is good music and comes from the heart - and this, without question, is true of the vast majority of Cuban musical expressions. (p. 204)
We have to thank the Office of the French Ministry of Culture for sponsoring the translation of this excellent book. I would also recommend a Spanish translation of the book for the benefit of Hispanophone scholars, students, and music lovers.

Individual chapters address ritual music, the rumba, "carnival" celebration music, music since the revolution, and a great deal more in this broad-reaching, nicely organized survey of the unique and lively musical voice of a nation. Both new and experienced hand weavers will find inspiration in this beautiful guide to creating lace. While true laces are laboriously made with needles or bobbins, hand weavers can use a loom to quickly produce lovely lacy fabrics. The loom-controlled textures depend upon groups of threads that work together and do not reveal their full effect until the cloth comes off the loom and is washed. Suitable for self-study or class use, this book offers weavers a sense of design mastery and a wealth of ideas and lace patterns.

Whether from business-focused cable TV channels, newspapers, magazines, Web sites, or friends and family, investment advice comes these days from every corner. The nagging question for conscientious investors remains, though: how to separate good advice from bad? In a world of squawking television commentators and garish headlines, who and what should we trust? With Just One Thing, veteran investment writer John Mauldin offers his answer: take just the best advice, from the best investors, and discard everything else. Mauldin has solicited 12 leading investors for what each considers his most valuable insight or lesson over a long and illustrious investment career--the "one thing" he considers most important to investing--and gathered the tips for future generations of investors to learn.

The lessons which Mauldin has compiled in this thin, readable volume range widely. Some readers may enjoy the folksier tone of hedge fund manager Andy Kessler's piece, which analogizes investing to a hike up New England's Mt. Washington, on a foggy day. Other may prefer the approach of bond investor Gary Shilling, who argues for finding and developing a consistent and long-term narrative (or "story" about a market) around which to build investment picks. Yet others may find it most comforting to go with financial analyst Rob Arnott, who runs a multi-billion dollar fund for Pimco and who anchors his market analysis in deep skepticism and extensive quantitative analytics.

As with the larger market, Mauldin's group of 12 expert investors brings its own mix of philosophies, tactics, and personalities to investing, and in his notes between each selection, Mauldin is careful not to tip his hand favoring one or the other. Instead, quality for Mauldin rests in the survey of the masters, and the restriction of those masters to "just one thing" each. Mauldin should know: as the author of Bull's Eye Investing: Targeting Real Returns in a Smoke and Mirrors Market, as well as a weekly investment newsletter with readership over one million, he has seen his share of both charlatans and geniuses.

Mauldin's work can be taken a couple of different ways. For younger investors, it may provide a valuable survey of different investment philosophies, and the opportunity to learn just enough to undertake further research elsewhere. For more experienced investors it can provide the possibility of a new idea gleaned here or there, some new concept that may have been overlooked previously. Either way, both audiences will benefit from the diversity of perspectives included in this book. In an increasingly chaotic and noise-filled world, trusted sources which give such sure-handed perspective on the business of investments deserve high praise. --Peter Han

4 out of 5 stars Good for long-term.......2007-05-21

Because it's a compilation of strategies from 12 investors, analysts and traders, the book will help get you ideas for LONG-TERM, and make you (hopefully) more humble and better inveestors. It has no new ideas for short-term capital-gain-seekers out there, but i like the book as a light reading.

An investor`s handbook-suitable for picking up and reading one chapter at a time. Has some useful tips for avoiding disasters.

              5 out of 5 stars Understanding Investing.......2007-01-18

I picked this book up on the recommendation of the editor in one of his newsletters. I respect his work, so I decided to bite. I was not disappointed! This book is an easy read - well-written and edited - it gives the best advice from the top investors (i.e. successful). Each one actually has a different "one" thing, but the financial markets and opportunities are so diverse that it results in a great reference book.

You may not use every "technique" that is discussed, but you will understand the world of finance and investing much better. You will also likely find one or two chapters that are particularly well-suited to your own investment interests and capabilities. I keep it near my chair for re-reading. The topics are not aimed at any current "hot trend", but at long-term strategies in a variety of markets. As such it is an invaluable resource for the casual investor who wants to avoid costly mistakes.

              4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-01-04

I am a very experienced investor and didn't expect much from this little volumn; however, I was wrong. There are some real pearls here that I have used sucessfully. It is worth a read, but it is not for the novice investor.

4 out of 5 stars Just One Thing.......2006-11-05

Very good, but will require follow-up research to define a clear
              methodology for the particular strategy.
