Book Description
Photographs by Ruth Thorne-Thomsen
Introduction by Denise Miller-Clark
Poem by Mark Strand
For Ruth Thorne-Thomsen, photography is theatre: the alleged credibility of the photographic image signifies to her a myth by which to "palm off fantasy as reality" while leading us to the kingdom where the human psyche dwells.
Using a pinhole camera she constructed to achieve infinite depth of field, Thorne-Thompsen-a third generation woman photographer-creates images of the spirits quest for integration. In compositions at once mysterious, witty, and erudite, Thorne-Thomsen deftly employs archetyping, appropriation, and manipulation to invent landscapes where the individual and collective unconscious merge in an alluring and spirited dance.
Ruth Thorne-Thomsen is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships. Denise Miller-Clark has been director of The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, since 1986, and Mark Strand is a Poet Laureate of the United States.

Imaginary travels.......2001-06-05
Astounding, awesome, fantastic, incredible... there are only some of the adjectives that occurs to you while you see this book. Ruth Thorne-Thomsen is without doubt one of the best contemporary photographers, her imaginary landscapes don't have equal. If you like the millenarian ruins... imaginary landscapes... the disturbing beauty... the dreamed photographies...this is your book.
Again, one of the best photographers of the history. Few photographers can make feel the some Ruth makes you feel. An incomparable photographer. An incomparable book

Customer Reviews:
I may be a sick bastard. But I received Ruthless .......2006-12-30
Rhymes as one of my first books from my much beloved "veddy English" granny. Granny has been gone a long time & I lost my copy 40 years ago. I never forgot it. I saw it on sale at Amazon & snapped one up. Not a classical book of poetry, maybe not even classy. Doggerel is the easiest type of poetry to remember. It is perverse, clever & cruel. You may even laugh out loud. I have not met a person who has not a least smiled. That may say something about the company I keep. It's the most fun you can have with poetry.
Cruel little poems.......2006-11-04
This is a very short book - there aren't many poems. They are very cruel, almost disturbingly so unless you have the sort of sense of humor that embraces Edward Gorey's little alphabet recital ("B is for Basil, devoured by bears"). I do share that sense of humor and so found this book to be entertaining, and a suitable gift for some similarly-minded people on my gift list. It has b/w illustrations.
A delightful collection of misanthropic mischief.......2004-12-16
"Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes and More Ruthless Rhymes," by Harry Graham, is a hilarious collection of humorous poetry that succeeded in making me laugh out loud. A bibliographic note on the copyright page states that the Dover Thrift Edition "is a slightly altered republication of the works originally published in 1899 and 1930 by Edward Arnold, Ltd."
The book contains a series of vicious and macabre rhymes accompanied by entertaining pictures. The poems' topics include death, accidents, cruelty towards the elderly, firearms mishaps, illness, marital discord, and murder of children. A typical poem is "L'Enfant Glace," which begins, "When Baby's cries grew hard to bear, / I popped him in the Frigidaire." A savage mockery of the human condition, "Ruthless Rhymes" is absurd, grotesque, gleefully sadistic--and lots of fun!
Hysterical.......2001-08-29
The best in mean-spirited doggerel. The poetry's not great, but then again, its not supposed to be. If you like the twisted writings of Edward Gorey, this book will make you laugh out loud, and if you share it with people who do not share your outlook, will make them look at you like you just squished a puppy in front of them.
Ghastly Little Willie.......1999-12-24
The antidote for Barney and Mr Rogers. These are short rhymes from a time when children were not so PC. A delightfully gruesome acceptance of children's fascination with the dark and gory.

Book Description
Still the finest comprehensive analysis of the subject to have appeared in English, Magical Reels charts the development of Latin American film industries in a world increasingly dominated by the advanced technology and massive distribution budgets of the North American mainstream. John King sets up a historical framework to unfold the overlapping histories of cinema in the continent: the itinerant film-makers of the silent era who projected their films in cafes and village halls, the inventive use of vernacular music and local comedy in the early sound pictures, the 'golden age' of 1940s Mexican cinema, and the 'new cinema'--oppositional cinema made 'with an idea in the head and a camera in the hand'--of the late 1950s and beyond. A new chapter written for this edition examines Latin American cinema in the previous decade.

The HarperCollins Dictionary and Its Advantages.......2000-07-01
As a music grad student, reference is everything. Everything from theory terms to composer bios, from instrument descriptions to dynamic markings, HarperCollins does an excellent job at detail -- at the same time making it concise enough to fit into your average knapsack. I've used the 3rd edition all through my college career and it's safe to say the approach is sophisticated enough to be used by those well-versed in the field, while maintaining word-usage that is basic enough for your average 'joe' to understand. For this price range, I strongly recommend this to be your every companion should you delve into music in any way.

Improv is Fun .......2007-08-24
I am acting teacher who owns her own studio called Star Map Acting Studio in New York and there are a variety of classes and workshops children and adults can take so you have to keep things interesting. I found the Improv game book very helpful and full of fun ideas. It kept my classes this summer fresh and new. I can't wait to use it this Fall for my new classes I am sure my students will have fun with all of them.
101 improv.......2006-10-25
this book is good, has alot of games I plan on trying alot of them.
A+ book for acting students.......2006-08-22
As an acting teacher I was thrilled with this book. It has lots of terrific improv games and ideas. I'm inspired and I know my kids will be too.
A Great Place To Start.......2006-07-28
To start off, I am the author of the book so take the "star review" for what it is. I just wanted to give you a little more depth to what this book is about in case you are looking at purchasing it. First I will tell you that I've had over 12 years experience of not only performing improv and owning a troupe, but I've been very lucky to teach improv to people of all ages and walks of life. I will be up front with my statement that no ONE person can teach you everything about improv. I learned from many people and took what I liked to form my style and beliefs. It is that style that is in my book and I encourage you to look at several books if you are really serious about it.
My book starts off as an introduction for teachers looking at adding improv to their lessons. This is mostly aimed at school aged children, but I use the same practices for Adults. The publishing company wanted to add this to their "101 _____ for Children" series so I fitted everything for that. I got them to add the "Adults" part so potential readers who were older wouldn't turn away. I've outlined a lot of stuff on how someone who knows very little about improv can teach it (at least teach it my style) and have tried to include everything I would do in front of a class. This same information can be used by the reader to learn the basics.
I ended the book with tips for Advanced people. Again, these are theories of mine gained over watching and performing with people 2 to 5 shows a week every week for over a decade. These tips not only include how to stretch yourself, but also some hints on what to look for when forming your own troupe.
In the middle is the 101 games promised in the title. This being the first book I wanted to have a strong list of "beginners" games and warm up exercises, but there are still plenty of games for all levels of players to be found. The games listed are all what would be called "Short Form" games, the type you would find watching Who's Line Is It Anyway?. There was a second book planned that would include more of the tougher games and a section on Long Form, but I'm not sure if that book will ever be published.
If you are a very seasoned improv actor this book will only have a few games that you might not have tried yet, and I don't know how much you'll get out of the "beginners" section. But I for one feel that you never stop learning about improv and there is some very good stuff throughout the book. And if you are in the early stages of improv learing, there is no doubt that you'll find a lot of stuff to take with you on stage.
If you are a teacher looking at having fun in the classroom, this book is... well, it's hard to say "perfect" because I'm biased. But it works very well in the classroom. And not just for theatre teachers. I've had several teachers who tell me that they use it for helping with creative writing and other types of learning that require more imagination. Another teacher told me that they use improv early in the year to get everyone used to being in front of the class and not being embarrassed about themsleves or speaking in the class.
I have a huge love for improv and that is what I tried to put into the book. I can't call it the ultimate Bible on improv because there is no such thing. Improv is like art, everyone knows what they like. This is not only what I like, it's what I love.
I applaud your interest in improv. Learning how to adapt to changing situations is not just a great thing for the stage, it's helpful in all forms of life. I hope that this has been helpful to you in some way and if not I'm sure you can alwayas track me down -- darn internet.

What do the Honda Supercub, Intel's 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets. In The Innovator's Dilemma, author Clayton M. Christensen shows how these and other products cut into the low end of the marketplace and eventually evolved to displace high-end competitors and their reigning technologies.
At the heart of The Innovator's Dilemma is how a successful company with established products keeps from being pushed aside by newer, cheaper products that will, over time, get better and become a serious threat. Christensen writes that even the best-managed companies, in spite of their attention to customers and continual investment in new technology, are susceptible to failure no matter what the industry, be it hard drives or consumer retailing. Succinct and clearly written, The Innovator's Dilemma is an important book that belongs on every manager's bookshelf. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
In this revolutionary bestseller, Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen says outstanding companies can do everything right and still lose their market leadership -- or worse, disappear completely. And he not only proves what he says, he tells others how to avoid a similar fate.
Focusing on "disruptive technology" -- the Honda Super Cub, Intel's 8088 processor, or the hydraulic excavator, for example -- Christensen shows why most companies miss "the next great wave." Whether in electronics or retailing, a successful company with established products will get pushed aside unless managers know when to abandon traditional business practices. Using the lessons of successes and failures from leading companies, The Innovator's Dilemma presents a set of rules for capitalizing on the phenomenon of disruptive innovation.
Find out:
- When it is right not to listen to customers.
- When to invest in developing lower-performance products that promise lower margins.
- When to pursue small markets at the expense of seemingly
- larger and more lucrative ones.
Sharp, cogent, and provocative, The Innovator's Dilemma is one of the most talked-about books of our time -- and one no savvy manager or entrepreneur should be without.
Download Description
Revised, updated, and with a new chapter, this book continues to take the radical position that great companies can fail precisely because they do everything right. It demonstrates why outstanding companies lose their market leadership when confronted with disruptive technology--and it explains how to avoid a similar fate. Drawing on insights from a number of industries--such as the computer and disk drive industries, discount retailing, minimills, pharmaceuticals, and the automobile industry--Christensen shows why good management often turns out to be all wrong--and what to do about it.

No Dilemma Here.......2007-08-18
It is the typical manager's nightmare. A startup with a powerful idea wipes out all the dominance your large ogranisation had. It can happen overnite and without warning.
How do you stop this nightmare from happening? Well, the answer could lie in The Innovator's Dilemma.
Kishore Dharmarajan
Author of Eightstorm: 8-Step Brainstorming for Innovative Managers
A disruptive view on innovation.......2007-08-09
Professor Clayton Christensen introduced the term "disruptive innovation" as a management buzzword, the whole book spins around this concept and offers very perturbing views on why being a star performer is a major threat to pass the next opportunity.
First, a definition: disruptive innovations are those that offer "less" in the critical performance parameters of current customers. As a consequence disruptive innovators have to look for different customers than the ones that established companies already have.
To make the point a deep analysis of the hard disk drive industry is made. More than 100 innovations are analysed and only 5 are claimed as being disruptive: the progressive reduction of size from 14", to 8", to 5 1/4", etc. All follow the same pattern: the innovation had lower performance on capacity which was the critical parameter for existing customers and innovators had to find new customers, eg for the 8" drive the mini-computer manufacturers instead of mainframe manufacturers. In fact innovations were so disruptive that almost none of the established companies was able to be successful in the new market. Although current players where by and large able to bring forward the other 100 sustaining inovations without major troubles.
The second part of the book recommends how to make disruptive innovations work, with supporting evidence from examples. This are:
-Create a new organization to deal with the innovation
-Match organization and opportunity size
-Allow the organization to fail rapidly and inexpensively and move on
-Leverage some of the existing resources but not the values and processes of the main organization
-Spend time looking for the right customers rather than the right technology.
The surprising learning is that what impedes that good companies cannot profit from disruptive innovations are that they are good at what they do in their main business not that htey are bad. The hot topic is still when a disruptive innovation is comming how can we spot and capitalise on it, and put ourselves in the dilemma of chosing the best option.
A well laid out, thought provoking and seminal work on innovation.
Repetitive.......2007-06-23
It was a hassle getting through this book, but overall it was worth it. A lot of good lessons learned, but he says the same things over and over again. Read the first and last chapters and you'll be fine.
Business calssic.......2007-06-17
The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen is a must read book for any person interested in keeping their business moving forward or for any person starting a business. Christensen clearly exposes the traps that cause successful companies to stop innovating and succumb to innovative new firms. The material is presented as a series of fascinating case studies with commentary.
just great book.......2007-05-12
Just great book for those considering start their own business.
Would be helpful for bean counters in large corporations too.
