Book Description

Graffiti is as ubiquitous as telephone poles in America's cities; it is as old as the earliest civilizations. The most public medium in the country today, graffiti can signal territory, love, or liberation. Ironically, graffiti is understood by only a fraction of those who encounter it. Usually read as a sign of urban decay and as a loss of control over the physical environment, graffiti has become one of the most potent cultural languages of our age. Wallbangin' is an unprecedented, in-depth look at this phenomenon as it is embodied in the neighborhoods of one of its epicenters, Los Angeles.

Anthropologist Susan Phillips enters the lives of the African-American and Chicano gang members to write a comprehensive guide to their symbolic and visual expression. She not only decodes the graffiti—explaining how, for instance, gang boundaries are visually delimited and how "memorial" graffiti functions—but she also places it in the context of the changing urban landscapes within the city. Graffiti, she argues, is inextricably linked to political change, to race, and to art, and she demonstrates how those connections are played out in contemporary L.A. Wallbangin' is, on this level, an iconography of street imagery. But it is also a very personal narrative about entering the world of L.A. street gangs—a world of pride, enemies, affirmation, and humanity where gang members use graffiti to redefine their social and political position in society.

To many outsiders, graffiti is cryptic, senseless scribbling. But Phillips explains it as an ingenious and creative solution to the disenfranchisement felt by those who produce it. With personal narratives, provocative photography, and contemporary voices, Wallbangin' unlocks the mysteries behind street-level ideologies and their visual manifestations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-07-09

Wallbangin' is a great read. It's well-written, solid anthropology, and its fascinating topic make it one of the best books on the topic available. The photography is fine -- I don't think Phillips ever claimed to be Ansel Adams, these photos were taken for research purposes. Still many of the pictures are more artistic than their subject matter, though some of the gang tags are beautiful. About the only problem this book seems to have is that a few bigoted readers (probably just one - with multiple Amazon accounts) can't seem to get past the author's color.

5 out of 5 stars Wallbangin': Graffiti and Gangs in L.A........2002-07-25

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author's research approach and theory are both novel and intriguing. It is a book that will make one think again about the social construct of gangs as well as the political message of graffiti. The negative reviews of this book seem to be based in the notion that the book should demonize the informants as well as gangs in general. If one is looking for tired rhetoric regarding gangs and graffiti, this is not the book for you. Rather, the author's work expands the parameters of the dialogue regarding gangs.

1 out of 5 stars Not well put together.......2002-06-10

Book was poorly put together. Scattered pictures throughout the book. She put herself in serious danger trying to take these pictures...i know how south central is and people who are white will get either robbed or killed in some way or another usually not in a car of course. I don't really understand the point of the book what is it for? We already know about the crips and bloods etc; people are looking for answers to problems not listening to her rave about her Geertzian ghetto or whatever the hell it was. It's no problem that she is white in my opinion...she seems to have a little self-hate problem, for instance

she says: i was on 103rd street when a black man charged at me on his bike of hate of my whiteness"
DUH...she is white in WATTS an entirely black area so of course people will treat her as what she is. whatever the book was WACK

1 out of 5 stars don't believe the hype.......2001-07-21

"i'm a student doing research, and i need to know". another lame attempt by a privaledged white girl to " exploit something she knows very little about. her book is weak!

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and complicated........2001-06-03

This book is typical of being written by a white person. The book is about a white woman documenting gang styles and graffiti. She wanders around south central with a camera in her bag and tries to become friends with the members. she often refer's to these people as her "friends" such as my "friends" from ( ) gang. The photos are nothing you can't find anywhere else. I have seen all photos similar to these in other books and magazines. If people are so interested in seeing this thing simply jump in a car and drive around south central yourself. The book is very un orginized and over all I think it's [bad]. I grew up in south central so I would know.

        Book Description

Dogs and cats can be cute, cuddly, and faithful companions. They also can be ornery, unpredictable, and hilarious. Get Fuzzy is all about the latter. In his latest collection, New York Times best-selling author Darby Conley has found uncommon humor and insight in our common, everyday pets.Get Fuzzy has fast become one of the premier comics on the funny pages. Readers of 400 newspapers worldwide enjoy the antics of this award-winning strip. The Wilco household includes Rob the bachelor, Bucky, the cantankerous cat with an attitude, and Satchel, the loveable-but-clueless dog. If animals really could talk, one would expect them to sound like Bucky and Fuzzy. Often, it's the subtle nuances of the strip-from Bucky's hilarious facial expressions to Satchel's dopey innocence-that pack the biggest laughs. The strip's dry wit and razor-sharp reality earned it the National Cartoonists Society's prestigious Best Newspaper Comic Strip in 2002. Get Fuzzy captures the non-glamorous essence of being a pet owner in a way people who own and operate dogs and cats are sure to love.

these books just crack me up, my only complaint is they are too short! I never want to put them down, and read the whole thing in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars "Pray To Your Big, Filthy Monkey God Before I Food You".......2007-09-05

"Say Cheesy" is another explosively funny collection of "Get Fuzzy" strips by Darby Conley. My local newspaper only recently started carrying this strip so I'm catching up. But I think this is already a classic. Innocent, good-natured, stupid Satchel the dog, the insanely hostile and ugly cat Bucky (with his one enormous fang) and lonely-guy human Rob Wilco are hilarious and endearing characters. It was a simple stroke of genius to make all of the animals able to speak, and then carry on as if it were no big deal. It doesn't make them into just humans; they continue to be idiosyncratically animals, with outrageously funny and recognizable quirks. (Like the child-like scrawls that pass for animal handwriting.) It's the little details that kill you, like Satchel's ever-present wristwatch (when he can't tell time, he just thinks "it makes him look pretty".) My favorite sequence in this book is Bucky's obsession with eating a monkey, and his disastrous trip to the zoo when he tries to do just that (see above quote.) Just looking at the drawings makes me laugh like heck; Conley's clever dialog and plots add to the effect. Reading "Get Fuzzy" quickly becomes addictive.

5 out of 5 stars Get Fuzzy with the Buckster!.......2007-03-07

Author/Artist/Pet Weirdo Darby C. certainly does a GREAT job drawing Bucky Katt. As the owner of three siamese cats (Foo Katt, Tiki Mau, and Saboo) I can attest to the fact that these clever beasts abuse the humas who love them. Keep on drawing the fang-toothed cat full of hubris! P.S. PLEASE get Rob a date...we're feeling sorry for him!

5 out of 5 stars Get Fuzzy ROCKS!.......2007-02-10

i have been a longtime reader of darby conley's get fuzzy comics and this book has just enough to make me laugh at every strip. very good book!

4 out of 5 stars "Yet again, I find your desire to eat a monkey disturbing.".......2006-12-04

Rob, Bucky, and Satchel continue to entertain readers with their exploits.... well, mostly Bucky's.

In Say Cheesy, Bucky really does get a chance to eat a monkey, wrestle a chicken, and duel a ferret. Other animals appearing include a box turtle, a conger eel, a cow, and a great white shark (picture only).

And Bucky's thoughts on the meaning of life?

        "Rather than love,
        than money,
        than fame,
        Give me tuna."

Oh, and don't let Satchel lick the ice cube tray or talk about playing craps.

I enjoyed reading this book-I did learn a few amazing facts that I did not know, although a couple of the pieces were a bit ambiguously written.

A fun read, would recommend it for your guest bathroom during the holidays.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good stocking stuffer.......2006-11-28

I got this book as a gift last year. It makes a great stocking stuffer, especially to those familiar with the series. The Bathroom Readers are well known for lots of useless yet fascinating trivia, grouped into short segments (for obvious reasons). This book on Christmas is shorter than most and, at 192 pages, goes pretty fast. It does, however, provide tons of background information on the holiday and everything associated with it. Anybody who likes useless trivia will love this book, and you certainly will not hate it. Four out of five stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Bathroom Reader Does it again!!!.......2005-12-30

Fans of the Bathroom Reader series know what to expect, entertaining factoids filled with nuggets of learning and several chuckles. This book follows the impossibly high standards of all the other books in the series. It is filled with tons of trivia on everything Christmas from Santa Claus to Rudolph to the First Christmas and more. Ever wonder where Egg Nog came from or why Christmas is on December 25? These questions and many others are answered. This book should become part of your holiday decorations so that others will know why we celebrate Christmas in the manner we do!

In the summer of 1998, as far as Hollywood was concerned, nothing went the way it was supposed to. As Peter Bart recaps that season:
A cheaply made gross-out comedy generated twice the revenues of a Steven Spielberg high-concept adventure; two pricey asteroid films collided, yet neither suffered damage; Jim Carrey made a hit movie that didn't offer a single laugh; Eddie Murphy buried his hard edge long enough to make two successful, warm-and-cuddly family films; Harrison Ford made a love story playing opposite a self-avowed lesbian; and finally, defying the mythology of the "youth demos," two stars in their sixties, Robert Redford and Warren Beatty, enjoyed yet another warm moment in the sun.
Bart is a seasoned observer of the film industry both as studio executive (holding seats at Paramount and MGM/UA) and as the editor in chief of Variety and Daily Variety. His insider's perspective, and his ability to gain access to the major players in the business, serve him well here. The Gross is filled with juicy behind-the-scenes stories on how certain summer blockbusters got made and positioned for release--even though the book could strongly benefit from both an index, to make finding information on particular films easier, and information on its sources, to determine exactly how much of the story is Bart's original legwork and how much comes from the trades. Along the way, he sketches a grim portrait of an industry whose leaders have become increasingly frustrated with the high cost of filmmaking; even when they're making fun-filled romps like The Mask of Zorro and Armageddon, people at the studios don't seem to be enjoying themselves. Bart manages to cover almost every major summer release of '98 with enough detail to hold readers' interest, so while The Gross may not be the ultimate overview of the film business, it's a captivating snapshot of an industry in flux. --Ron Hogan

        Book Description

The Gross is an all-access pass to the movers, shakers, and fakers who make Hollywood run. Tinseltown is an edgy place where risk-taking is a way of life-and the risks now run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Summertime, when the studios unfurl their most expensive and effects-laden "tent-pole pictures," has become the only season in which Hollywood makes money, and so, as this book illustrates, the summer season provides an ideal microcosm for scrutinizing the mega-budget-driven revolution that has forever changed the movie business. Bart interviews all the key players, including studio executives, producers, directors, and stars, to show how creativity and commerce hang in a dangerous balance in the new Hollwood.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book about the business side of the movie industry.......2006-09-08

This was definitely a fast read. The author writes about the inner workings of the movie industry in regards to the summer box office. The book looks at how the movie industry has changed the meaning of a blockbuster and importance of opening weekend totals. Instead of relying on word of mouth to create a blockbuster, the main objective of a movie's success is the size of its opening weekend box office totals. Mr. Bart shows the irony of this logic, by examining the word of mouth success of There's Something About Mary and the failure of Godzilla's box office performance. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning more about the entertainment industry.

        4 out of 5 stars Flopzilla!.......2005-02-09

I love this book and read it about once a year. Yes, it's shallow and superficial (it's hard to be "deep" when you cover as much ground as Bart does in this book), and yes, there are some errata and other mistakes which could have been easily fixed, but were not (and least in the edition I have), but so what? "The Gross" is not hard history, it's an gossipy, insider's stab at the business of movie-making. If you take as much schadenfreude as I do from watching arrogant and venal studio suits make fools out of themselves, it's a hell of a lot of fun, and I'm pretty sure that is what Bart intended it to be.

"The Gross" examines the blockbuster year of 1996 ("The summer that ate Hollywood") and how it affected all the major studios. It follows the various big-budget movies from the idea phase to completion and their lives -- or deaths -- at the box office. Included are "Armaggedeon" "Deep Impact" "Saving Private Ryan" "The Truman Show" "There's Something About Mary" "Bulworth" "Out of Sight" and many others. But my favorite part of the book, bar none, is about "Godzilla."

"Godzilla" to me represents everything bad about Hollywood. I am not simply referring to the movie, which is unwatchable garbage,
but to the process by which it was made, and the deafening, in your face 24/7 marketing campaign which accompanied it. Commercials, billboards, toys, fast-food tie-ins, T-shirts, promotional junkets....Hollywood pulled out every stop in order to sell this movie, and the suits involved were riding a wave of smug self-confidence that threatened to drown the whole industry. And then it crashed. Hard. Egos were savaged. Fortunes were washed down the drain. Reputations were wheeled off to ICU. Bitterness went around like the Asian flu. And I laugh harder every time I read the tale. There's nothing quite like watching a bomb explode in the face of the shmucks who put it together, especially since they planned to shove it down our collective throat.

"Godzilla" aside (I'm laughing as I write this!), I enjoyed "The Gross" for its gossipy look at the big players -- studio heads, suits, actors, writers, et al -- as well as the savage and merciless process of getting a movie "green-lighted." The story of "Bulworth", Warren Beatty's pretentious vanity vehicle that caught fire in the driveway, is another howler, since to this day nobody, absolutely nobody, knows who green-lighted it...or if they did, will admit it.

"The Gross" is kind of like movie popcorn. If you eat it expecting a meal, you'll be very disappointed (not to mention slightly sick to your stomach); if you take it for what it is, it's a finger-lickin' good time.

4 out of 5 stars Good Writing, High Gross.......2002-09-08

Peter Bart, editor of Variety, penned this sketch of the Hollywood summer season of 1998, and offers insight and background information both useful to the interested moviegoer/home critic, and to screeenwriting professionals looking for strategies to break the script-reader barrier. As the title implies, he analyzes in-depth the dollar amounts going into studio movie projects from initial option monies to the screenwriter to post-production marketing campaigns and all points in between. There are a couple of things to be learned here: 1) that the Hollywood moviemaking process doesn't necessarily reward truly innovative and creative material; and 2) that the movie going public does. Hence, Something About Mary comes out of nowhere with a miniscule budget and scores big with the public, while Godzilla hopes to make back some of Sony's money overspent on a shove-down-your-throat marketing campaign the public didn't buy. The gist of this book is that a truly creative screenplay will find a way no matter what financial juggernauts happen to be cruising through Hollywood, with a little bit of faith, hope -- and luck.

        3 out of 5 stars Grossly Entertaining.......2001-03-08

I am a avid movie lover and so enjoyed Peter Bart's fun trip through the summer of 1998. Reading it now in the spring of 2001 I really already forgot that summer had so many really awful films. And Peter Bart does a fine job saying how they came to be. It does look like coporate Hollywood has done a fine job of killing off Hollywood. I was interested to note my favorite film of that summer, Smoke Signals, was only mentioned twice in passing. My other favorite Everest was not mentioned at all. But the point of the book was just that... Hollywood wants the dumb down block buster. After reading this I'm glad I missed Godzilla. If you like the movie industry and how and why things get made and marketed you will find this an intersting few hours read.

4 out of 5 stars Hollywood Gossip Cental!.......2000-09-01

Most of us love a good tidbit of gossip. If you do, you have 323 pages of movie behind the scenes snippets. I really enjoyed this book for what it was - gossipy, insightful and enlightening. Particularly enlightening to those of us who are saturated with movie "glamour" but are interested in how "not glamourous" the business really is. How fascinating that a business which is essentually about fantasy is really about the bottom line - money.

This is a great tab book for those of us who love Crue. Covers many of their songs throughout the "decade of decadence". This is a perfect companion to the Motley Crue Greatest Hits CD.

My only complaint is that it's missing "Too young to fall in love" and the original version of "Shout at the Devil", other than that, it's perfect!

Until something more comprehensive comes out, this is your #1 Crue tab book!

It has to be tough being Motley Crue, well into middle age, and you've blown all your money on booze, smack, blow, and strippers. Now nobody buys your cds, because your music didn't age well (unlike Guns N' Roses). Sorry guys

Working With Emotional Intelligence takes the concepts from Daniel Goleman's bestseller, Emotional Intelligence, into the workplace. Business leaders and outstanding performers are not defined by their IQs or even their job skills, but by their "emotional intelligence": a set of competencies that distinguishes how people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. Analyses done by dozens of experts in 500 corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations worldwide conclude that emotional intelligence is the barometer of excellence on virtually any job. This book explains what emotional intelligence is and why it counts more than IQ or expertise for excelling on the job. It details 12 personal competencies based on self-mastery (such as accurate self-assessment, self-control, initiative, and optimism) and 13 key relationship skills (such as service orientation, developing others, conflict management, and building bonds). Goleman includes many examples and anecdotes--from Fortune 500 companies to a nonprofit preschool--that show how these competencies lead to or thwart success.

Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can keep growing--it continues to develop with life experiences. Understanding and raising your emotional intelligence is essential to your success and leadership potential. This book is an excellent resource for learning how to accomplish this. --Joan Price

                Amazon.com Audiobook Review

This abridged audio version, sharply narrated by the author, focuses on Goleman's theories of emotional intelligence in the workplace, a standard that measures how well people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. In educational but accessible tones, Dr. Goleman explains the need for emotional intelligence in employees, the issues that arise when such skills are lacking, and practical guidance on how to achieve these skills. Goleman's use of real-life examples highlights the important lessons learned from business-world successes and failures. The humorous anecdotes also keep the listener entertained while he presents somewhat esoteric but insightful and interesting ideas, which ultimately increase the potential to succeed and lead others. Book Description

Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career?

The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered.

For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today—and the future.

Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read.

Drawing on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and studies in more than 500 organizations, Goleman documents an astonishing fact: in determining star performance in every field, emotional intelligence matters twice as much as IQ or technical expertise.

Readers also discover how emotional competence can be learned. Goleman analyzes five key sets of skills and vividly shows how they determine who is hired and who is fired in the top corporations in the world. He also provides guidelines for training in the "emotionally intelligent organization," in chapters that no one, from manager to CEO, should miss.

Working with Emotional Intelligence could prove to be the most important reference for bottom-line businesspeople in the first decades of the 21st century.

                2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2007-09-07

If you want to read about emotional intelligence, then get the original book for the same author "Emotional Intelligence". If you want to read about practical applications of emotional intelligence in the work place then this is what this book is about. I only gave it two stars because I think that the whole book should be summarised into 20-30 pages and just added as a chapter to the original work. Its important to read about the applications of emotional intelligence, but in this book you end up reading the same story over and over again with different companies and different people.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-10

I was expecting I would get information on IMPROVING my EQ. However the book only tells how EQ is important in working place but never provide methods on HOW TO IMPROVE it. Truely, the examples or stories of the importance of EQ are great, but I didn't benefit from anything.. as I ALREADY KNEW IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE EQ AT WORK! that's why I am looking for information about EQ..

                2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-12

Good information but does not execute how to utilize the information it leaves you confused and aggravated. I kept waiting for the punch line, guess the jokes on me.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, But It Ain't Science.......2007-05-09

I bought the unabridged audio CD version of this book. It was not well read, as others have said here, but I tried to look beyond that into the content.

Many of the assertions made by the author are supported by percentages and statistics which do not have any apparent source or academic credibility. The ideas are not bad - and some are downright fascinating. But I wonder about whether this is really "science" or something like scientology.

Goleman is clearly passionate and deep in belief, and his writing tends to express that depth. However, I don't know about the soundness of the platform on which so many of his assertions rest, and it makes me uneasy.

Given that he criticized corporate training programs for having little emphasis on measurable changes in business performance, this is really ironic.

Management and leadership is still as much art as science, and that might be where a reader can reconcile himself to Goleman's predicates. However, so much of what he asserts is not labelled art in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative but..........2007-03-13

This cd package was very informative but I can only listen to it for 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time because it will put me to sleep otherwise. The authors vice rarely changes and it can be boring at times. It teaches you a lot but be sure to listen to it in intervals.

...with all apologies to Steven Covey. While Dr. Goleman spends a little time introducing the ideas of "Emotional Intelligence," that is no substitute for reading the earlier work.

Great ideas, though not quite broad enough to form the basis for a comprehensive organizational development strategy. Goleman is still more clinician than O.D. specialist.

From C-level executives to front-line supervisors, the research is clear: emotional competencies are more important than training, IQ, and technical experience in determining who succeeds and fails at work. Into this exciting business arena, the revised and expanded edition of Working Relationships takes its rightful place as a classic toolkit for mastering the personal characteristics and social abilities of emotional intelligence (EQ), with new contributions that include two chapters focused exclusively in the power of EQ to influence success regardless of job type, level of education, or scope of responsibility.
