Knifemaker.......2006-11-06
This is an excellent book with wonderful illustrations and descriptions. It is not very technical but some of the knife terms used falls strangely on the Anglo ear! My only reserve about the book is that it is too biased towards French knives. Which I suppose is to be expected from a French author. But in this respect the title is slightly misleading. It should rather have read "100 Legendary French Knives - and a few others".
How close do you come?.......2006-11-04
If you have any interest in knives or collecting them You will find out exactly how good your taste in knives really is. This book has full page color pics and is a very easy read. You might find yourself buying knives you never heard of or smile when you see how many legendary knives you allready own. How good is your taste in knives?
great gift for collectors.......2004-12-17
I always have such a hard time buying gifts for men, my father most of all. However, when I saw this book I knew it was for him. He is an avid knife collector, and this is the one thing I could get him that he wouldnt have ever thought of buying for himself. This book will be proudly displayed within all of his collection, and he can pick it up and flip through it anytime he chooses. Thanks
My Take on 100 Legendary Knives.......2003-12-30
Pacella's book 100 Legendary Knives contains excellent photos of exemplary knives of various types, albeit types arbitrarily chosen by him. The pics absolutely make the book worthwhile. However, because of Pacella's arbitrary choices of knives, some of the selected knives are not really "legendary" in any true degree, but simply an example of one of many types of knives. Various of the non-American bladesmiths and certainly most of the examples of French knife makers could have been replaced with more prominent names, most likely American. Of course, having arbitrarily named certain knives as legendary, like the Mississippi Gambler's knife, Pacella immediately opens himself to statements such as mine. It is good to remember that everybody's list of 100 legendary anything is up for discussion and disagreement. As well, the writing style at times creates ridiculous senses of things--"The various periods of prehistory succeeded each other, ..." What is "prehistory," that is, what exact time is before historical reckoning? And, yes, historical delineations of time are usually chronological and therefore do fall one after the other. The pics make the book, and it is well-worth the price only for the pics.
The history of legendary figures who created knives.......2002-07-11
There are plenty of knife valuation guides on the market, but 100 Legendary Knives is something different: it probes the history of legendary figures who named or created the knives, from Jim Bowie to Bill Sanders, a member of the Timberline trio. Each knife receives color photos and a vivid history of its makers, purposes, and how it fits into the knife world. Essential for knife collectors.

Book Description
Baby Blues is the hilarious cartoon strip that depicts the perils and pratfalls of raising young children in suburbia. Daryl and Wanda MacPherson are a couple in their mid-thirties struggling to juggle work and three kids with hectic schedules-and maintain their sanity. Zoe, the talkative eldest, is seven and more worldly than ever. Hammie is the newly anointed (by the recent birth of baby Wren) middle child. At age five, he's a willing student for Zoe and a virtual Velcro board for blame. Wren is the newest addition to the MacPherson clan-so far, all giggles and sunshine . . . with a few clouds on the horizon.
Parents worldwide have delighted in this slice-of-life comic since its debut in 1990. Baby Blues has been a huge hit in syndication (King Features), published in nearly 1,000 newspapers in 24 languages, and read by 40 million fans.
Customer Reviews:

Baby Blues is the bomb.......2006-03-21

Book Description
What little-known son of a famous genius has been called:
"A musical blight"
"A one-man plague"
"History's most justifiably neglected composer"
"The worst musician ever to trod organ pedals" "A pimple on the face of music"
In this long-awaited hoax, possibly the most unimportant piece of scholarship in over two thousand years, Professor Peter Schickele has finally succeeded in ripping the veil of obscurity from the most unusual -- to put it kindly -- composer in the history of music: P.D.Q. Bach, the last and unquestionably the least of the great Johann Sebastian Bach's many children.
Customer Reviews:
Great book - but THIS EDITION is unacceptable.......2005-07-13
The hardcover original of this book is roughly 10" x 10" square. This paperback edition takes those pages, keeps the square aspect ratio, and squeezes them onto 9" x 6". So the picture, print, etc. are 40% smaller than intended, with wide stripes of white space at top and bottom. Many of the funny details in the pictures are lost, and much of the text is unreadable.
The other reviewers are exactly right as to the hilarity of the content. By all means, seek out the hardcover original of this book from a used book seller. A used copy may be imperfect, but it will be less expensive and more readable than this edition.
Side-splittingly funny.......2001-04-10
A hilarious fake biography of the fictional, "last and certainly least" child of Johann Sebastian Bach. P.D.Q. spends most of his young life rebelling against his family's artistic legacy before he finally realizes that having the name Bach means that people will pay him good money for mediocre musical works.
And mediocre they are--besides being a drunk and a philanderer, he has no musical talent whatsoever. Which doesn't stop him from creating some of the most inept, bizarre and funny art the world has ever seen. Great stuff, even if you have no knowledge of classical music.
Hilarious!.......2000-05-05
I first read this hilariously absurd book when I was in college. My only regret is that I read it in a public place, so I had to stifle the nearly-uncontrollable fits of laughter it provoked. Only Peter Schickele would solemnly explain that a suite for "divers instruments" was not actually performed with scuba gear, or that the left-handed sewer flute is nearly extinct as an instrument because most of them ended up back underground. Only Schickele would write a classical piece featuring ocarina and plucked strings (ok; so that's not true; Gyorgy Ligeti did it, too--but maybe Ligeti read this book!)
In short, this is the best written satire on classical music ever produced. It gives classical music the same treatment as the "Airplane" movies gave Irwin Allen films--one joke after another after another...
A Must.......2000-04-08
An absolute must for every P.D.Q. Bach fan! It includes an annotated catalogue of P.D.Q.'s music (titled "Such a Horrid Clang") up to its publication in 1976. Every page is full of hilarity. I am constantly getting mine out to read about the pieces I'm listening to, or just to laugh about the hilarious photos and captions in the pictorial essay. Even the index is worth reading beginning to end!
Hilarious (to the right audience).......1998-12-29
I must agree with the previous review: This is the best book of its kind, whatever that is (it may be the ONLY book of its kind). If you enjoy music theory or music history, this book will make you laugh harder than Schickele's recordings of PDQ Bach's music. If you aren't fairly knowledgable about classical music (and many of the very dry books which this satirizes), don't buy this book, as much of the humor will be lost on you. If, however, you know that a sonata is not something to be wiped with a handkerchief, this book is full of non-stop laughs.
Book Description
Titanic: James Cameron's Illustrated Screenplay contains the shooting script of the most popular film of all time. An invaluable reference for film students and fans, this book details the evolution of the epic romance from script to screen, including scenes and dialogue cut from the final film, as well as annotations explaining footage seen in the final cut, yet not contained in the screenplay. Never-before-seen photographs of the stars, storyboards for sequences never filmed, and an in-depth interview with Cameron make Titanic: James Cameron's Illustrated Screenplay an essential companion to the #1 bestseller James Cameron's Titanic.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful!!.......2007-03-07
When I recieved this book. I was amazed, the pictures are beautiful it had a lot of inside information about the movie I didnt know. It is a must have for any Titanic Collector!!
"leo" + James Cameron = EVIL.......2005-12-10
although i DID bring 2 dates to see this JOKE of a flick, there was always somethig that didn't sit right with me: the number of times "Jack" (Leonardo DiCaprio) says "Rose" (Kate Winslet) and VICE-VERSA! so on a drunken hunch i googled the script and copied and pasted it in ms word. Then, i did a text search for the word "Rose". And YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE what i found!!!!! The word "Rose" appears.... are you ready for this? 666 TIMES!!!
that's right! SIX HUNDRED AND SIXTY SIX TIMES!! 666 666
proof positive that Leonardo Dicaprio is the Anti-Christ!
Best Book for fans of the Movie!.......2004-01-31
If you are a fan of the movie "Titanic", I would have to say that you would be crazy not to own this screenplay! It's illustrated with tons of pictures from the movie, which alone would be worth it. But it also shows deleted scenes and lines that weren't in the final cut for the movie. I had a great time, looking through the book and finding all the things that were different from the movie! It also gives good information on behind-the-scenes action, even about ad-libs the actors had. You would be surprised at what they were! I found this book to be even better than "James Cameron's Titanic" even though that was good, also. But if your a true fan, this should definately be a book in your collection!
Awesome Book for any Titanic fans.......2003-11-13
This illustrated screenplay is the greatest book ever. When you're reading it it is like you are watching the movie and if the movie makes you cry the book definatley will too. It includes photos from the film, the script and much more. It is an awesome book to have and I'd reccmend it to anyone.
Helpful hint: buy it from a used book seller- the book costs $30.00 and i got it brand new for $3.95!!!!
A Keepsake!.......2001-11-29
'Titanic : James Cameron's Illustrated Screenplay' is an excellent book! A must-have for any movie buff, Titanic fan, etc. The information and reference material in this book is wondorous! You get the *entire* script, even the deleted scenes, with many little notes, additions, rewrittem scenes, explainations, an extensive and exclusive interview with James Cameron, and over three hundred pictures, most of which are very original and not often printed! The appearance of this book makes it very desirable and collectible! The cover is beautiful and made from quality paper. The text, fonts, colors, and pictures inside this book set the mood and make this book very unique and precious. Buy this book, it's a must-have!!!!

Book Description
The motets of J. S. Bach are probably the most sophisticated works ever composed in the genre. Nevertheless, Daniel Melamed maintains, the view that they constitute a body of work quite separate from the German motet tradition is mistaken. He starts by considering the eighteenth-century understanding of the term itself and finds that Bach’s own use does indeed agree with his contemporaries and that his motets are rooted in the conventions of the time, particularly in matters of musical construction, performing forces, and type of text. A fresh look at the repertory shows that Bach composed motets all through his career and an appreciation of the contemporary conception of the motet sheds light on questions of how and why Bach himself used the form. Professor Melamed also finds plenty of evidence that motets and motet style played an important role in Bach’s exploration of the musical past.
Book Description
Masterpiece of sacred music structured around the 5 divisions of the Ordinary of the Catholic Mass. Too monumental for ordinary liturgical purposes but a work that stands with Bach's Mass in B Minor as a sublime vision of faith — both personal and universal. Reprinted complete and unabridged from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition. Translation of texts.
Customer Reviews:
Excellence.......2007-03-12
The Dover Full Score editions are an unprecedented buy these days. Scores, especially full orchestral, much less works like the Missa (with addition of full chorus and soloists) are so often impossible to read, poor type/space, etc. This edition is well-bound, beautifully printed, ample space for notations (and I make MANY as I study); such a great bargain. The company also delivered swiftly and packaged the book well, it arrived it perfect condition. Excellence all around. I also have the Complete Beethoven Symphonies, Mozart Piano Concerti, etc. many Dover scores and they are above all others. Don't waste your money on anything else. Even the cover designs are handsomely done and make an aesthic accent on the desk top!
Usefull for learning........2006-01-30
As a student of conducting, I find this to be a very usefull score. Having the choir in original cleffs, as well as the orchestral transpositions and score ordering of the Romantic era are really good practices for full score reading, and instant transposition. I find that though there are no measure numbers or letter markings, getting that information does not take long. For the price, it is worth the extra effort to learn to read cleffs.
FYI.......2003-09-05
For those thinking of purchasing this edition, keep in mind that like many Dover scores, this one uses C-cleff notation. I'm not sure if I am supposed to be reviewing the work, or the edition. But I assume it's the edition, since nothing I say could possibly effect the way the music world's opinion of the great Missa Solemnis. Other than the cleff, it's a quality score.
Dover has done it again!.......2000-03-24
Dover is a blessing for music students and music lovers alike! Their sturdy and inexpensive scores last and last and last. This one of the Beethoven 'Missa Solemnis' is no exception. I was happy to see such a great work available at such an inexpensive price. The majesty of Beethoven's masterpiece is now accessible to all at a very reasonable cost. Jump on it and get it!

Customer Reviews:
I'm a diehard boglehead.......2007-06-27
The one book every invester must read. Besides simple to understand investing wisdom it tells you how to approach all of your financial decisions.
The Gospel According to John (Bogle).......2007-05-21
This book contains a wealth (hah! pun!) of useful information for two kinds of people: 1) novice investors; 2) experienced investors who have not had much success (probably because they didn't follow the strategies outlined in this book).
As the book explains, one of the most important things for investors to understand about people in the financial industry is that most of them are salesmen; i.e, they make their money by taking your money. As Woody Allen said, "A broker is someone who invests your money until it's all gone." Once you understand that fact, everything else falls into place.
Another important thing for investors to understand is that history teaches valuable lessons about investing. In particular, history teaches that no one can beat the market consistently, and trying to beat the market is expensive. No one wants to be an expensive failure, so being satisfied with merely tying the market, not beating it, is eminently sensible. Index funds are cheap, reliable ways to tie the market; therefore, investing in index funds is eminently sensible. You can't beat the market that way, but you can beat the vast majority of the fools wasting their money trying to beat the market.
Another important thing for investors to understand is that the market is volatile, therefore having a diversified portfolio of non-correlated investments is eminently sensible. The book provides specific advice about how to diversify, including advice about how the recommended asset allocation might change over time. (Bogle's company, Vanguard, has a reputation for being pretty conservative. Not surprisingly, the recommendations in this book are pretty conservative too. Personally, I think the recommended stock/bond allocations are too conservative by 10% or more at each stage of life, but that could be just personal preference.)
In addition to the central concepts and strategies summarized above, this book also has chapters on the importance of saving early and often, retirement calculators to help you figure out how much you need to retire, withdrawal strategies for making your retirement funds last as long as you do, the potentially devastating impact of inflation and taxes, why market-timing and chasing performance are doomed to failure, strategies for saving for college, the basics of insurance and annuities, and a very brief discussion of estate planning.
All in all, I thought this was a very informative book. Novice investors would certainly benefit from it. Unsuccessful investors would also certainly benefit from it. Experienced, successful investors are probably already following its recommendations, so they might not get too much out of it, other than confirmation of how clever they are. And that's not an entirely bad thing either!
Best Financial Advise.......2007-05-19
My employer loaned me The Bogleheads Guide to Investing to read. It is a simple and concise way to understand investing and finances. I wished it had been available years ago. After I gave it back to her I purchased my own copy to review it as I needed. My brother saw my copy and ordered 6 copies for himself and his grown children. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in acquiring a secure financial future. I would even recommend it even if you are not interested because one day you will be.
Excellent financial advice.......2007-05-13
Every ordinary working class investor should follow the advice in this book for financial success. I am a believer in Vanguard, and would recommend them to everyone.
Bogleheads' A++.......2007-04-07
As a recent college graduate with little to no expenses I found myself with a small nest egg and absolutely zero direction. My money was rotting away in a lowest interest savings account.
After reading many financial/investing books I feel like I have found the one that gives direction, realistic goals, and options. This book is honest and easy to understand. It teaches the power of combining indexing with compounding.
I recommend this to all that are new to investing. If you are an experienced investor you might find the book is a bit basic but keep in mind how much information the writers packed into this book.
