2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype.......2006-12-15

I bought this book because of a rave review in the LA Times. It was intended as a gift but I would be too embarrassed to give it to anyone. Rarely have I seen a worse designed book. It looks like first generation web design blown up and printed between hard covers. The recipes themselves look interesting and the photos are cute but the prentious verbiage and overblown graphics gave me indigestion before I set foot in the kitchen.

1 out of 5 stars extra ingredients sacrificed to page layout.......2006-03-03

If you want a cookbook that is so poorly edited that you will have multiple extra ingredients from the ingredient list that are not used in the recipe, then this is the book for you.

Entire paragraphs seem to have been cut out of the recipes for the sake of page layout.

What a piece of garbage. I have never been one to burn books, but this is a good candidate for the incinerator.

4 out of 5 stars A fun and original book!.......2005-12-03

I was very impressed with this book. Art and Cook is a very original concept and a great conversation piece for your coffee table or as a gift. There are fun recipes and VERY fun design to compliment them. This was a great purchase. The package alone is worth the cost of the book!!

Very Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A stupid pretentious book, written by a stupid pretentious person, for stupid pretentious people - a complete rip-off........2005-11-27

Aside from the fact that the book was plagiarized by Allan Ben from unknowing photographers & designers who were swindled out of their ideas, designs, compensation, and credit - the book has no soul. There is no "running thread" or theme. Not one original thought. Not even worthy as a coffee table book. Don't embarrass yourself - you deserve better.

1 out of 5 stars freakish and pretentious.......2004-06-04

I use the words freakish and pretentious to describe this book because not only is it filled with "the cloud" (frenetic repeated techno-graphics used so commonly in early 90's websites) it reeks of turtleneck sweaters and black berets. The graphic design and images are distracting, at times distasteful, and on occasion, enough that I want to slap the book shut and hold it with two fingers away from me at arm's length.

Some of the images scare me. Take a look at the front cover. You see the eyeball EYEing you from inside the egg? If you perhaps think that a cookbook is about how food should eat you, then maybe it's for you. Or if you want to create food and have a nice display to put next to it when you display it in a gallery, maybe this book is good choice.

This is not a cookbook. It is a graphic design study with the subject of unappetizing food.

    Book Description

Ever notice the way a school of dome-shaped jellyfish floating in water looks like wild mushroom soup? Or the way a creamy, cratered moon can look like a crispy pita just waiting to be dunked into a swirl of hummus? If you haven’t, let Art and Cook open you to a disconcertingly fresh and strange world of correlations. Packaged appropriately in an egg carton, this quirky book serves up art the way it does food―in an eccentric, engaging, and witty manner.
Inspired by Dadaist and Surrealist ideals, Art and Cook aims to “fuse together conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely, joining the everyday rational world in an absolute reality, a surreality.” It melds pop art and food to create original works of art that do what any good art intends to: explore new territory, cause controversy, and make people think differently about how we consume food and about the world around them. Art and Cook is not your ordinary cookbook, but it is a totally satisfying and fulfilling experience.
"Art and Cook is an ambitious new book that is anything but plain and boring." ―John Hylan, The New York Times
"Established itself as a seasoned most provocative cookbook." ―Linda Hales, The Washington Post
"This is just ahead of its time." ―Sylvia Carter, Newsday

Surfer dude Houryu and shy intellectual Shouin are very much in love. Their days together are filled with happiness, but when Shouin's French tutor - a handsome and openly gay man named Nanami - makes his affection for Shouin known, doubts begin to surface between the couple. Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Since nobody else mentions it . . . (SPOILERY CONTENT WARNING).......2007-04-18

I reviewed this full 2-parter under V1. But just quickly warning those who are already fans of v1 that v2 is not just more of the same. Unfortunately, Kawai needless and pointlessly has one lover rape the other, during a fight, and then forgets about it and dismisses it as no big deal. Just so you know. I do wish other reviewers would trouble to mention these sorts of things.

      5 out of 5 stars potent love.......2006-09-02

after all horyu and shouin went through in the first volume, one might think that life is smooth-sailing for this twosome. au contraire, because if that's the case, volume two wouldn't be in existence!

this time around, trouble comes in the form of a new suitor, a past dalliance and of all the things... the ocean, or specifically, horyu's love for all things aquatic (well, not everything aquatic... just surfing). what's interesting is that the concerns hounding these two lovebirds are valid - none of those ridiculous plot devices that overruns most manga - as is the way it is tied up at the end. both horyu and shouin are shown with flaws and the way they react to their often uncertain future are both realistic and touching. kawai-sensei's ability to imbue humanity in her characters is apparent in this manga.

as usual, kawai-sensei's art is modern, gorgeous and sensual. there's just something very sweet and yet sexy about her art. her characters' chibi-fied forms are cute without being annoying, and are actually fun to look at. also, her characters are always adorable; brooding dudes included.

speaking of brooding dudes, the extra story included in this manga revolves around a film student and his mysterious, charismatic yet slovenly film subject. i am utterly in love with this story, and the chapter is waaay to short to do them justice. thankfully though, kawai-sensei has produced a separate series on this couple, called "in the walnut". unfortunately, this title has yet been licensed in the states.

all in all, volume two of our everlasting continues the tone and sensibilities of its predecessor, making it a satisfying round two of one of the sweetest and beautiful yaoi romances out there.

UPDATE: in the walnut is now licensed and will be published sometime at the end of 2007. keep a look out for it!

      5 out of 5 stars Lovely!.......2006-04-15

I love Toko Kawai's works. She is one Yaoi mangaka/artist who does not need steamy sex scenes to hold my interest. Vol 2 explores every angle of our lovers' feelings for each other beautifully - their doubt, insecurities and vulnerability and the fragility of their love. Kawai's words are simple yet deeply emotional (the translation is well done) and the facial expressions are vividly effective. Her story line may seem simple but it is her characters and the development of their love which shine. Horyu and Shouin overcoming all odds to be together simply tugs at my heart strings. Now if only DMP will translate the rest of her works.

5 out of 5 stars The Story Continues.......2006-04-11

Again the story is the same just a little edgier with some more interesting scenes in the car... Oh and this time they don't have to find eachother just how to hold on to each other as their futures are closing in and trying to lead them in sepearte ways.

The author, Kenji Kawakami is well-known in Japan for his creation and tireless promotion of "chingdogu" -- the art of the "unuseless idea." This book features the best of his inventions, inspired devices designed to solve all the nagging problems of domestic life, including ones you may not have realized you have. Reading this book is like exploring an alternate universe in which the 19th century inventors who shaped our lives had far too much time on their hands, and far too many plastic molds in their factories. Hilarious!

      Book Description

Strangely practical and utterly eccentric inventions for a life of ease-and hilarity. In Japan, inventor and visionary Kenji Kawakami is famous for his creation and tireless promotion of chindogu-the art of "the unuseless idea." This book features the best of his inventions: inspired devices designed to solve all the nagging problems of domestic life, including ones you may not have realized you have. Enter the realm of the almost useful, where you will find Duster Slippers for Cats (for feline assistance with tedious housework), the Full Body Umbrella (for day-long all-over dryness), the Fish Face Cover (helps get the fish cut up with minimum emotional trauma), and the Temporary Ladies' Room Converter (stake your claim to the facilities). Every item has been fabricated to the highest standards, fully tested by pioneering members of the Japanese public, and tastefully photographed. It is only a matter of time before Americans succumb to their charm, logic, and utility.

      5 out of 5 stars Funniest Book I Have.......2003-04-21

This book is the funniest one on our shelves. The pictures and text are hilarious. It is great to get it out every now and again and laugh yourself silly.
My descriptions will not do the book justice [you will need to see the pictures to appreciate what I am saying], but here are a few of my favourite unuseless inventions featured in the book:
Duster Slippers for Cats [socks for your cat, with little mops attached, so that the cat dusts the floor as it moves around]
The Backscratcher's T Shirt [which has a grid on it so that you can tell people exactly where to scratch]
The Hydrophobe's Bath Body Suit [so that you can have a bath without getting wet]
The Heavy Smoker's Mask [so that you can smoke 14 cigarettes at once]

      Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars RonCoý move over!.......2002-06-19

Heh! Just when I thought RonCo™ put out some weird gadgetry, I discovered this little gem of a book. Looks like our neighbors on the opposite side of the Pacific Rim (well, neigbors if you live in North or Central America, anyway) have some strange and ofttimes hilariously bizarre-- yet highly unmarketable-- ideas for everyday contraptions! From the solar-powered cigarette lighter (a combination magnifying glass/ cigarette holder) to the double-bristled toothbrush that allegedly cuts brushing time in half, there's plenty of weird and whimsical inventions between the covers to keep one entertained for-well, maybe not hours; one hour at least. Sadly, the brevity of this collection of unusual tchotchkes is one of its few drawbacks. Other great advances in the field of general purpose gadgetry include several practical household cleaning devices (like dustmop booties for the cat), useful outdoor accessories (like the combo umbrella / camera tripod), and three different kinds of golf swing aids!

My personal fave invention: the back-scratching-aid T-shirt, which features a coordinate grid on the back that resembles the shot-keeper grid from the Battleship™ board game. Simply let a conscientious passer-by in on your discomfort, and direct him/her to the proper coordinate square for sure-fire relief. "Okay, try G-7... oh yeah it's a hit all right!"

Now I'm sure a few of you out there might be a little sore at me for disclosing the names & functions of several of the inventions displayed inside this neat little tome. After all, what's the joy of looking through a humorous collection of ludicrous contraptions if the element of surprise has been compromised? Let me assure you, there's plenty of other great tchotchkes to look at and enjoy! So lighten up and take a look already!

      `Late!

4 out of 5 stars Great coffeetable book.......2001-08-26

This book is great. It shows many inventions that you might want. Some of the inventions I even have made my own of because I think it would be very useful. There is only one reason why I only rated this 4 stars, The book is not very long I finished reading it in 2 hours while even doing other things at the same time....

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly, absurdly funny.......2000-09-05

I like the Chindogu concept as much as I like the inventions themselves! Before reading, please read the 10 Tenets of Chindogu!

From time to time, it's good to see people who are willing to make a huge effort for absurdity's sake. Even the text is painstakingly worded to maximize the humor of each invention--I ate up the words like they were sushi.

If you are the kind of person who is into prop conversation pieces, this is a good addition if you don't already have it. Perfect for rescuing yourself from awkward moments, as well as delighting others with many hysterical laughs. And I wonder how many true "useful" inventions have been born out of contemplating these "unuseless" ones? (Probably not TOO many!)

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......1999-11-19

This book has the funniest ideas ever! We've paged through it several times and it still cracks us up -- the inventions featured are so stupid that they're hysterical!

      Book Description

      INTRODUCTION

`He's what you would expect of an adolescent mind - which I happen to possess'
      Ian Fleming

The name's... Do we really need to go on? Just those two words are enough to conjure up the most famous fictional character of the 20th century. In this ever-changing world in which we live, James Bond remains essentially the same. His appearance has changed (albeit not as often as his favoured vintage of champagne) but 007 is recognisably the same character Ian Fleming dreamt up in 1952, the man every boy wants to be. He is a superhero without superpowers; a St George fighting contemporary dragons with a handgun and a stream of one-liners; a secret agent as admired by men (even his enemies) as he is irresistible to women; a hero so indestructible his popularity has survived changing political and sexual mores, some formulaic films and (post-Fleming) some deeply average thrillers.

We might not all want to be Bond (or slip between the sheets with him) but a character who started out as one man's fantasy has become a fantasy enough of us share (or enjoy) to support a small industry, symbolised by the seemingly unstoppable movie franchise which has racked up more than $2 billion at the box office. His global appeal is, perhaps, Bond's most stupendous feat of all: invented by a middle-aged, upper-middle class Brit, he has become a nationless, classless, ageless icon, as recognisable as Elvis, JFK or Madonna (mother of Lourdes, not of Jesus).

He may not be able to fly but he has proved as indestructible a superhero as Superman. And, in an industrial sense, he has more staying power than winged wonders or men of steel. Although there have been some duff Bond movies, the quality control exercised, mainly by the Broccolis (Cubby and Barbara), has, by Hollywood standards, been exceptional. You only have to look at the various Tarzan movies to see the shambles Bond's celluloid career could have become in other hands.

His appeal may rest in the fact that we don't know much about him. At least little that matters. He is a hero who never bores us because after half a century (and 20 movies, 33 novels, various novelisations and short stories) we know less about what makes him tick than we'd discover if we asked him round for dinner.

While this book won't tell you what makes Bond tick, it hopes to tell you almost everything else you need to know about 007, his creator, the books and movies, the girls he's bedded, the villains he's bested and the gadgets he's tested. So mix yourself a vodka martini (you'll find the recipe on p109) and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for a start in the series.... only a start.......2006-04-15

I knew practically everything in this book being a 007 veteran.
I could imagine it being very useful fro people beginning the bond craze. GOOD READ.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Little Volume.......2005-09-20

I've been a James Bond fan my entire life (I was born one year after DR. NO was released), and I found this to be a fun little volume that takes quick looks into Bond's origins, the novels, the films and the phenomenon.

But I really had to wonder how the authors could rate THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN better than ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. I found a few other errors, but this, to me, is the most glaring mistake in the book.
In "The Girls" chapter, both ladies from YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE are missing.
In the middle of page 170, a quote from Tiger Tanaka is mistakenly attributed to FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.
Bottom of page 246: "sene" instead of "sense."
On page 259, a sentence reads "Bond also appears there to visit the grave of his dead wife Tracy in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE," which is very odd since Tracy expires in the final seconds of that film!

I also wondered why there was no mention of Sydney Reilly, the World War I British spy of whom Fleming said, "Bond is just an imaginary figure--but he's no Sydney Reilly."
(There are books and a mini-series with Sam Neill called REILLY: ACE OF SPIES available).

These quibbles aside, this is definitely a handy little volume for the James Bond fan.
It's on my Swinging Sixties Spy shelf at home.

      4 out of 5 stars Shocking!.......2003-08-09

This guide has a complete listing of the books and movies up to "The World is Not Enough." It's a light and entertaining read for casual Bond fans or for people who don't know much about the older Bond movies, like myself. However, I can't imagine that hardcore Bond fans could enjoy this. Probably those fans know more about Bond than is included in this book. The listings for the books are about a page each, and for the movies rarely exceeds two pages. So if you've seen all the movies or read all the books, then I don't recommend it for you. However, if you'd like to have an introduction into the world of Bond, it's an excellent book. I thouroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover.

      4 out of 5 stars great read.......2003-06-13

This is one of those books for someone who wants to know as much about James Bond as possible in just a short amount of time. It gives you just what it promises, a rough history about Bond. If you truly want to impress people with your knowledge about 007 you need to research more. But if you want to just get by in a conversation about Bond this is the book for you. So I recommend this for anyone who needs to know about the most famous secret agent out there in just 007 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Expand Your Mind.......2007-01-09

If you have tried sudoku, try this next. It can be frustrating, but it's also a lot of fun.

      4 out of 5 stars Good puzzles.......2006-12-30

I like how there are different levels of puzzles - beginner, intermediate, advanced.

However, I had been doing the TV Guide puzzles that had an answer to a trivia question, and these don't have it.

This book is straight letter godoku puzzles. If that's what you want, then this is it. There are plenty of them.

And if you get stuck, the answer key is in the back...but that would be cheating. ;)

      Book Description

Patterned after Strunk and White's classic The Elements of Style, this reference concisely summarizes the substantial existing research on the art and science of mentoring. The Elements of Mentoring reduces this wealth of published material on the topic to the fifty most important and pithy truths for supervisors in all fields. These explore what excellent mentors do, what makes an excellent mentor, how to set up a successful mentor-proteacute;geacute; relationship, how to work through problems that develop between mentor and proteacute;geacute;, what it means to mentor with integrity, and how to end the relationship when it has run its course. Succinct and comprehensive, this is a must-have for any mentor or mentor-to-be.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift.......2004-05-07

This is a valuable book. These authors have managed to distill a very broad topic into easily applied principles. As both a mentor and protege I am grateful for this book. I am now ordering this book as a gift for all my favorite mentors in my Harvard post-doctoral program. I recommend you do the same for those menotors in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Already The Classic Guide to Mentoring.......2004-05-06

As the Chief Operating Officer for a large medical technology company, I have mentored many junior professionals for years. But until now, I've never found a guide on the art of mentoring that lays out the specific details and skills mentors should master. Imagine my delight at discovering a short but comprehensive resource for everything a new mentor should learn and a seasoned mentor should reconsider. The authors promise a "nuts and bolts" guide to doing mentoring based on the writing style of the classic "Elements of Style" guide to grammar. The authors do not disappoint on this score. Amazingly, they manage to cover all of the key ingredients to outstanding mentoring without resorting to stories or wordy narrative. In reading the "Elements of Mentoring," one gets the sense that he or she is gleaning the distilled wisdom of two master mentors. The book is brief but jam-packed with the crucial details of starting a good mentorship, managing it successfully, and even bringing it through difficult transitions. I was impressed that the authors (both college profs) used lots of research in putting the book together (see the references) without cluttering the pages with it. I am not a frequent Amazon reviewer, but after reading this thorough but brief resource, recommending it to several colleagues, and pulling it down from my shelf already to re-read a section relevant to one of my current subordinates, I felt compelled to recommend it to other managers and leaders. One of the few books on developing junior talent I've been glad I paid for.
