    Book Description

Art and its Publics explores the interface between the art object, its site of display, and the viewing public.Engines of democracy at their inception during the French Revolution, public museums have since fostered the democratization of art. As museum-going has increased dramatically in recent years, the question of "whose museum? " and how museums construct and engage their publics has taken on added urgency. The essays in Art and its Publics present a cross-section of current issues, with contributions from both sides of the Atlantic and from museum professionals as well as academics. Essayists tackle issues confronting the museum community and seek to further the debate between theory and practice around the most pressing of contemporary concerns.

          Book Description

Created by Kenturo Miura, Berserk is manga mayhem to the extreme - violent, horrifying, and mercilessly funny - and the wellspring for the internationally popular anime series. Not for the squeamish or the easily offended, Berserk asks for no quarter - and offers none! His name is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a feared warrior spoken of only in whispers. Bearer of a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the scars of countless battles and tortures, his flesh is also indelibly marked with The Brand, an unholy symbol that draws the forces of darkness to him and dooms him as their sacrifice. But Guts won't take his fate lying down; he'll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned - and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! Accompanied by Puck the Elf, more an annoyance than a companion, Guts relentlessly follows a dark, bloodstained path that leads only to death...or vengeance.

1 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This didn't interest me at all, unfortunately. Some ultraviolent characters, where you are not quite sure what is going on, who they are, why they are doing it, or where they are trying to get to. After that, there was little to interest me. Maybe for fans of androgyny in art?

5 out of 5 stars An Epic Story in the Tradition of Beowolf .......2007-08-01

Kentaro Miura is simply a genius. And this work is his masterpiece. Inside this seemingly simple tale of a knight who accidentally enters hell and fights his way through to the other side, is a story about war and the lives of those who live by it. The action sequences are incredible, yet it is the concepts that are dealt with, the ideas that make Berserk so incredible. Let me first mention that Kentaro Miura's artwork is second to none in the medium. Thin black lines coupled with generous use of the color black create a stark image that tends to cling in the mind. However, Miura's philosophy of life finds its way through completely organically. In the way that epic poems and the work of authors like Shakespeare, use the story to relay an idea, Miura weaves his fantasies. Every battle, every line of dialogue, every character work to further some concept. His characters are not real, in the way that Jesus is not real. They are characters used to show something bigger. Read it and you will understand.

          5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-12-17

As one of the few girls who have read this manga, I feel I must comment. I personally love this series. (My opinion though might be a bit biased though as I am generally okay with violence.)

The great (and terrible) thing about this manga is it's story. It is exceedingly tragic. When I first started reading I almost stopped because of how depressing it was, it was just bad things happening left and right... but I've stuck through and it has paid off. The plot is great. Anyone who likes reading/watching tragedies will like this (I hope I don't sound sadistic here lol).

I feel I must also add that the whole story isn't just serious though. There ARE glimmers of humor and happiness that do occur in the series and because they take place so infrequently and in such a tragic setting, they are all the more sweeter.

There do seem to be some underlying themes, but the past few weeks (yes I bought most of them during the past few weeks > < so addicted!) I've been turning my brain off so I can't really elaborate on the details. The only things I could pick up on was causality, morality, etc.

The art is really great, imo. Very detailed (at least more detailed than the regular shojo I read). I love when Guts slices through a billion guys. Very cool.

Yarrr, I can't wait till I get Vol. 13! Yay Guts and Casca <3

          5 out of 5 stars Such a great series.......2006-11-10

If you have watched the anime series, then you will want to continue with the manga. I've read the manga (online) a few years ago when I finished the anime and just had to find out what happened.

I stumbled across the print version at Borders. From there I knew I had to get the entire manga collection. They are reasonably priced and well worth it.

If you are squimish, then this manga isn't for you. For the rest of the world - this is a must have.

          5 out of 5 stars Berserk.......2006-08-03

It's, you know, manga. Good stuff. I watched the anime series first, and the ending was too odd and too unfinished for me to leave it at that. So I decided to try these out. No disappointment. Buy it. It is in B&W, of course. But deal with it.

                Book Description

Nirvana almost single-handedly brought grunge into the popular consciousness with their seminal album Nevermind. From their underground roots in the Pacific Northwest, the group achieved world fame and Kurt Cobain had the mantle of 'spokesperson for a generation' thrust upon him. This was, arguably, the last era of great rock music, and it is shrouded in stories and rumours. Author Everett True, the man who introduced Kurt Cobain to Courtney Love and brought grunge to the outside world, gives an inspired insider's account of the grunge scene. Featuring rare photographs and exclusive interviews with members of Nirvana,Hole, Soundgarden and Babes in Toyland, Everett True takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the lives, the music, the personalities, the legends and the laughs. Everett True was the first outside journalist to cover the Seattle music scene in early 1989 and saw up-close the birth and development of the rock phenomenon which changed the face of alternative and mainstream music forever. This book contains exclusive interviews with people close to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, and photographs of members of Nirvana, Hole, and many other bands of the scene.

3 out of 5 stars Live Through This Book And You'll Get a Gold Star.......2003-03-07

I don't whether to sing this book's praises or call for its crucifixation. As a book about "American Rock Music in the Nineties", it fails to live up to its promise. Don't let the title deceive you: this book is not about the Nineties Rock Scene, it's about how Everett True single-handedly created the scene. He, not the musicians he writes about, is the star of this book, and that is it's greatest strength and weakness. True offers a fascinating look into the personal relationships and power plays that form between rock journalists and rock musicians, and if you read the book with that perspective in mind, it's a poignant read. Unfortunately, True lets himself get in the way of the story a little too often. Much of the book has a "Famous People I Know" feel, as True spends way too much time talking about the partying he did with his famous pals than on the music they make.

To give True credit, he offers a broad and eclectic selection of groups to represent the cream of the early 90's crop. True spends as much time talking about relatively unknown groups like Mercury Rev, Beat Happening, and the Screaming Trees as he does on major-league bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Unfortunately, rather than whittling down his list of bands to flesh out a dozen or so worthy groups (like Michael Azerrad did on his outstanding document of the 1980's underground, Our Band Could Be Your Life), True spends a page or two on most of his more interesting picks, teasing the reader with interesting characters and stories and than leap-frogging to his next 5 or 6 picks.

Most of the book is devoted to his relationship with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, and that is to the book's detriment. Quite frankly, there is more than enough material on Kurt out as it is, and True fails to truly tell us anything new about Cobain (go read Heavier Than Heaven by Charles R. Cross for all the Cobain you'll ever need). The Courtney section is a bit more interesting, but it's bogged down by True's tendency to stroke his own ego as "England's Hippest Rock Critic". Had True cut down on Kurt and Courtney and focused on the unsung heroes of the "alternative" movement (like the Afghan Whigs and Galaxie 500), it would've made Live Through This essential reading for any hard-core music fan. As it is, the book is an interesting but frustrating outline of what "American Rock Music in the Nineties" was. But to end on a positive note, True does have his heart in the right place. Reading the first section of the book, I often found myself nodding in agreement to his opinion on what is rock music, and what makes it so great. He's an idealistic rock geek, and that redeems him. If only he cut down on the "gee, ain't it cool?" vibe...

                4 out of 5 stars Book Grunge.......2002-05-04

If you're like me, you probably heard about this book before it came out, but then never saw it at any of the stores. You're then left with the questions - should I buy it off the net? and why isn't it at any of my local stores? Is it bad? I don't know the answer to the second question, but to the last one, no, and to the first one, maybe.

Before going any further I should say I had no idea who Everett True was before I bought this book. I bought it simply because I'm addicted to reading about rock stars (sad, I know), and mainly because the main topic looked like Nirvana (one of my favorite bands). Nirvana take up a good portion of this book (about 58 pages), but the Nirvana chapters aren't really about Nirvana, but about Everett's experiences with and feelings about them. Which keeps everything from just being the same old stuff recycled, and gives an honest look at the band, not something that's been polished up to sell books.

The main strength of the book lies elsewhere though, in the chapters that cover other "Grunge Bands." The "Grunge Lite" chapter was awesome. I like the Smashing Pumpkins, but his review of "Machina: The Machines of God" was dead on (and hilarious). The Hole chapters at the end were also good. All in all I'd say it was a good book. If you've read other Nirvana books or other grunge books and are looking for more, this is definitely something to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars For Big And Small.......2006-05-28

Rubinfeld has credibility, being the person who commanded the domestic and global expansion of Starbucks. Here, Art Rubinfeld gives very specific advice on not only the "what" but the "how." His well-rounded and varied background has has enabled him to perceive things the way he does and then implement his ideas. He worked as an architect and as a construction manager. Later as Brand Development Consultant for Adidas and Washington Mutual Bank, prior to joining
Starbucks. He took Starbucks From 100 stores to over 4,000
worldwide. The concept of Starbucks is, and has has been unique. Who thought, back in the early 1990s that this new coffee outlet would do what it has done? I didn't.

Rubinfeld presided over and directed the Starbucks corporation's
growth in the 1990s, but he's also served as an independent
consultant for many other companies, so this adds to a more
multi-dimensional level of knowledge and numerous experiences of which to draw from. He specifically sites successes - and failures - with specific and detailed examples. Because of his background he can apply theory and also apply actual practice: from upper-lever strategy to front-line consumer. ( E.g. the 80:20 rule.)

Another concept: location plus people. The emphasis is on the
concept of retail and retail expansion, and the author doesn't stray from this as the foundation. Even of course, down to the store design which (Starbucks contains elements of the natural Earth, and presents the entity of the coffee bean and it's progression to the cup of java you get in-store). The complete retail puzzle involves many pieces. Strongly integrated throughout this book on retail is the concept of brand.

This book is categorized into 4 categories, with each category having a couple, to seven chapters. The Chapters zero-in on such areas as creativity, and customer loyalty; finding the best locations for your brand, management, staff and organization, for the big or small operations; implementation (translation: doing it). How to adapt, and continue to being dynamic and change, to maintain your customers. One useful term is what Rubinfeld calls "ideation." This is the
creation of new ideas. In the changing market place, this is the corner stone separating those who stay, from those who fade. Lots of proven ideas and concepts in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Expert advice on retail chain locationing.......2006-04-14

Rubinfeld is one of the masters in the retail locationing process. I own about 50 books in English and German on retail management, but none has included the expert advice on the very specialized retail locationing process. At least not compared to Rubinfeld's understanding. Both from a very strategic point-of-view and down to the nitty-gritty details of the legal agreement.

Rubinfeld's experience from Starbuck's rapid expansion in the 90s is very helpful, but he also adds a lot of other interesting retail cases from his work as an independent consultant.

The book's website includes very interesting checklists, but is not as impressive as you would expect based on the references made in the book.

The title's focus on "Expanding your business ... across the globe" is misleading in my opinion. Rubinfeld's advice hardly crosses the Atlantic nor the Pacific Ocean. But if you are interested in his ideas and concepts, you'll soon see that it doesn't matter. The principles remain the same with some adjustments for local responsiveness...

Being a chairman of a small retail chain, I have already put the author's advice into practice in the negotiations for a new retail location. They are easy to follow.

I also highly recommend the book's excellent chapters on retail chain financials. It is one of the first books that clearly distinguish between retail chain earnings and store earnings. Rubinfeld's focus on having a robust proforma economic model is key - also in my experience. And this is irrespective of whether you own all the stores yourself or also include a franchise system.

5 out of 5 stars Star of Starbucks gives insight into retail success.......2006-02-13

Author Rubinfeld took Starbucks to its place in retail dominance by creating a brand identity, yet assuring that stores did not have a "cookie-cutter" feel to them. The author points out for retailers, the store is the experience, and this is key to estabilishing a foothold. The way Starbucks stores were put together allowed them to be located even in historical building and other places where a normal outlet might not be desired.

The book doesn't just cover marketing strategy. It also discussing hiring the right team, and how locations are chosen. This information is golden.

                  Chapters include
                  * Make No Little Plans--core values, first store, maximizing retail experienc

                  * Go Long: blueprint for execution

                  * Own Main & Main: location, hot spots, how to grow rapidly without stumbling

                  * Push the Envelope: Path to Growth

Can't think of another book that outlines how to get to mega-success in retailing as well as this one.

5 out of 5 stars A roadmap for retail strategy.......2005-12-24

“Who doesn’t want to run his own business? Who doesn’t want to have her own store? If you’re young, you think about it from time to time. If you’re older, you wish you had opened that little shop before the kids came – or you plan to open it when you retire. We all want to control our destiny. We all want to express our creativity. We all want to build something that will last. But how do you start a retail operation? That’s the question I am most often asked. How do you create a going concern, one that will grow and build long-term value? That is another common query. ‘Built for Growth: Expanding Your Business Around the Corner or Across the Globe’ answers these and related questions (from the Introduction).”

Arthur Rubinfeld, the architect behind Starbucks’ expansion, helped build Starbucks into one of the world’s top brands, says that ‘Build for Growth’ distills what I have learned into a comprehensive view of what it takes to develop a winning retail concept. This shows you:

                  • How to combine core personal and company values with your business expertise to create a meaningful brand.

                  • How to creatively craft your on-the-street retail presence to capture the essence of your brand and develop customer loyalty.

                  • Hot to identify the best locations for your concept.

                  • How to build your management team, organization, and systems – whether you want to have one store or 1,000.

                  • How to systematically and aggressively execute your plans.

                  • How to successfully operate your business to keep customers coming back.

                  • How to innovate and renew your brand.

In addition, he says, “Other books deal with one or two of these topics, but none has taken a holistic approach to retail development, combining theory and practical ideas to cover the entire scope of what it takes to succeed in retail.”

In this context, this invaluable book has been organized into sections based on four fundamental principles: (1) Make No Little Plans, (2) Go Long, (3) Own Main & Main, and (4) Push the Envelope. Each of these sections has covered a major aspect of retail strategy, in order in which you will normally experience them as you grow your business.

                  I highly recommend.

                  5 out of 5 stars At Last a Book On Expanding a Low-Tech Operation.......2005-12-04

There are any number of books that have come out in recent years on high tech business, how to start them, how to grow them and everything else. In spite of this, the really big growth companies in the past few years have been other areas, like Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Home Depot and the others.

For once, this book is on working with standard companies, not high tech. This book is written by the architect behind Starbucks expansion from some 100 stores to nearly 4,000 stores worldwide. He tells the story of evolving the stores as experience teaches what works and what doesn't. He concentrates on the details, always the details that have proven over and over to be successful.

Beyond the story of Starbucks he has generalized the experience to be useful in a wide variety of low-tech specialty stores. The lessons taught in this book can be used in a wide variety of operations and literally worldwide.
