The ideas of some of the most influential artists, writers and thinkers of our times about 19th century art are collected in this vast collection of essays. Collectively they tackle difficult issues like the definition of Modern art and tracing the history of aesthetics. Schopenhauer addresses originality and genius, Karl Marx tackles the modern condition, Sir William Newton and Charles Baudelaire struggle with the new notion of photography as art. An 1881 essay by Juis-Karl Huysmans in which he writes of Degas's Little Dancer as "the only genuinely modern experiment in sculpture that I have yet encountered" is a notable inclusion in this volume which includes literally hundreds of texts (many of them translated into English in order to be included in the anthology) that address the artistic issues of the era as well as the social, historical and cultural elements that impacted it. The editors are noted art historians and philosophers who do an excellent job of introducing each chapter as well as the individual pieces of writing where necessary. Art in Theory is an essential reference for students of art as well as anyone interested in the cultural development of the 19th century.
Book Description
Art in Theory 1815-1900 provides the most wide-ranging and comprehensive collection of documents ever assembled on nineteenth-century theories of art. Like its highly successful companion volume, Art in Theory 1900-1990, also edited by Charles Harrison and Paul Wood, its primary aim is to provide students and teachers with the documentary material for informed and up-to-date study. Its 260 texts, clear organization and considerable editorial content in this anthology furnish a vivid and indispensable introduction to the history of the art of the period. The anthology is also invaluable to anyone interested in the wider cultural debates of the nineteenth century, and in the development of modern aesthetic theories.Harrison, Wood and Gaiger collect writings by artists, critics, philosophers and literary figures, some reprinted in their entirety, others excerpted from longer works. Among the major themes treated are concepts of genius and originality, modes of landscape painting, approaches to Realism, the question of Modernity and debates over Impressionism, theories of optics and color, the aesthetics of photography, and the rise of photography. Each section is prefaced by an essay that situates the ideas of the period in their historical context, while relating theoretical concerns and debates to developments in the practice of art. Each text is briefly introduced by an outline giving the circumstances of its original appearance and indicating its relevance to the development of modern artistic theory. An extensive bibliography is also provided.

A superbly organized compendium of 19th century art criticism, it further incorporates secondary material from noteworthy contemporary art historians. IT'S A BIG WORLD OUT THERE--SOMEBODY'S GOT TO EAT IT!
There's never been a lasagna GARFIELD couldn't tackle, a burger he couldn't capture. GARFIELD always rises to the challenge--and so do the pounds! So whether he's cleaning his plate (and John's plate, and the neighbors' plates), prodding Odie to fetch an oncoming train, or celebrating his one-millionth meal of the day, GARFIELD's the cat that just doesn't stop--eating, that is!

Great being a Garfield fan.......2005-08-10
Have been for a long time now and i'm glad that i decided to start back. Buying the books and its really convenient with them being released in a 3 pack. Its like a bunch of classics all wrapped together, love it.
Excellent!.......2005-07-28
My son recently became interested in Garfield, and he just loves the books. Its fun and very easy reading, so he enjoys it, while still practicing his reading skills. Its the best of both worlds! The service was great, the shipping was very quick, and the quality of the book was excellent. Thank you for putting many smiles on our faces!
Another stunning achievement for author Jim Davis!.......1999-04-03
This book left me breathless! I was stunned! A perfect blend of comedy, drama, and even science fiction! Everything was written just as it was should have been written. Genius. Simply genius. Pure genius.
Another fine literary drama by Jim Davis.......1999-04-01
The saga of Garfield, Odie, and Jon continues. This dramatic and moving yet highly disturbing portrait of late-nineties domestic suburban sexual denial forces the reader to delve into his/her own tortured sexual psyche, much like Catherine and Heathcliff but as a trio each exploring their own unrequieted desire. The tension is unbearable, and Garfield's repeated replacement of food for sexual yearning is telling of late twentieth-century sexuality. Odie's alienation as a result of Garfield's spurning for the love of his inanimate replacement for Jon, in the form of Pookie, is obviously a compelling metaphor for post-colonial AIDS isolation. Alone in the confusing mire of mixed signals that is their home, poor Garfield has no choice but to seek solace in the soft, safe, squishy bosom of Pookie, denying the pain and self-loathing so apparent in his everyday encounters. Odie, much like Hillary to Bill, pointlessly attempts again and again to win the affections of a reckless, wanton, yet powerful force who has become consumed by his meager life, ironically encouched in power. Jon's unrealized quest for gratification is symbolic of the fall of Communism and is a clever representation of the fall of the wall and the troubles of subsequent unification. Supplanted in a landscape of repression and denial, our three protagonists seek comfort in their base desires: coffee becomes the drug of choice, providing escape from the hell that is life, much like today's "raver" youth seeking comfort in "ecstasy" and "techno". Woe to he/she who proceeds beyond the cover of this prophetic tome! Another masterpiece accomplishment by Davis, sure to keep him in literary courses of the future.
About the books........1998-10-21
I like Garfield. He is the greatest cat and funniest I have ever read. He is great and funny. He is MAD PHAT. He always makes me say WORD when I get a new book.

Tim Allen, star of the hit sitcom Home Improvement, takes on quantum philosophy, intergender relationships, and the male midlife crisis in a joke-filled (but ultimately serious) "weekend in the life" narrative. It's an odd combination, shifting from enthusiastic gushing over restored sports cars to earnest elaborations upon Deepak Chopra and Fritjof Capra, but Allen manages to pull it off. If you're expecting a standard unchallenging celebrity-penned "book," or a fluff-filled "memoir," you're going to be quite surprised.

I Love the book. It arrived in good condition. Thanks
WOAH..........2007-02-03
If you are counting on a funny guy like we all know tim allen from home improvement, um... read another book. it's amazing... on home improvement, jill, his wife, seems to know alot of psycology and tim tries to learn it, but in the book, it's amazing what words he uses... you'll be amazed.
Not Really Here, not really good.......2005-05-20
Hi. I think Not Really Here has a brilliant book inside it waiting to be written. How many of the sincere reviews on Amazon found the flow of consciousness idea boring and never got to the last two chapters, which were gold, but not even written by Mr. Allen? Too many. If only Mr. Allen had started with his friends letter, then elaborated on his ideas and understandings of the physics texts he'd read. Maybe he could have trotted the globe and actually talked to philosophers and scientists. Maybe he could have used the book as an excuse to actually go on a journey of discovery. Perhaps when Mr.Allen is older he can revamp the book completely and spend less time on mundane life and more on sharing (from his own voice) the excitement of discovery and wonder his new found ideas had given him. Then he'd have a book as worthy as a Brief History of Time that people who purchased it would actually read. Maybe host a PBS segment on NOVA too. -just my 2 cents
Quantum Mechanics and Tim Allen, who could ask for more?.......2004-06-18
My father believes that this book must be ghost-written, but I think that Tim Allen's actually a pretty smart guy and he probably knows Quantum at the level that he's writing about it. This was really my first intro to QM and it's the most entertaining book on the subject I've ever read. Also, the monotony is constantly broken by Tim's search for a car ornament and descriptions of his family. It's a fun read and a lot more "intelligent" than Don't Stand Too Close to a Nake Man.
A Very Deep Book by a Very Deep Man.......2004-01-11
This book is not as humourous as his first book, Don't Stand to Close to a Naked Man, but it shows a new side of the toolman. A side that is not shown in his show, any of his stand up comedy or in his first book. To show this side of himself, Tim Allen had to take a large step, and in doing so, he shows that he is more than a man's man. He shows that he's also a thinking man, and his world does not completely revolve around tools and cars, though they are a large part of his life. This book still has its humourous points, but has a much more serious tone overall. It is much more philosophical and deals with Quantum Mechanics, and it brings up some very large questions that we rarely deal with on a day to day basis. This book will not only make you laugh, it will also make you think.

Customer Reviews:
A cheap rip-off.......2007-08-21
Not at all the poster-sized book the title implies, this skimpy magazine-style paperback is just 8.5 wide by 11 inches tall. It consists of 12 full-page publicity shots from the first "High School Musical" film, plus eight smaller shots that are supposed to be postcards. The whole thing is cheap. Perhaps kids can use the larger sheets to decorate a locker, but the photos are dark and off-color. And the "postcards" are on too thin of a paper stock to actually mail. Overall it's like something you'd expect to find at Wal Mart for 99 cents.
For just a few dollars more, a far better value is the movie's soundtrack, High School Musical.

posterriific.......2007-03-14
The book is perfect for my 7 yr. old daughter and 9 yr. old niece. They love hanging posters in their room and the postcards were great too.

Wonderful Addition to collection.......2000-12-17
Want to add an excellent reference to your collection of books dealing with the Hollywood Musicals? Then this book is it. Just like those musicals from the golden age of Hollywood, this book has it all. Beautiful photographed images, lots of (techni) colours, stars in their greatest moments. Truly an Oscar winning performance! The book is printed in good quality paper and images are very clear and of good size on each page. Of course it's impossible to include a poster from every musicals in any given year, but the selections Bruce Hershenson made are excellent. A page may contain an average of 5 images while some are giving the full page treatment (e.g. Grease, Singin' In the Rain). Definitely an excellent addition to your library of movie books.
When Will the Musical Make a Comeback?.......1999-11-19
With the notable exceptions of Oliver! (1968), Cabaret (1972), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Tommy (1975) and Evita (1996), Hollywood has essentially turned its back on a genre that this book re-captures in all its glory. The images are superb, the color and quality are sublime. Though the book is straightforward, a thread of sadness runs subconsciously from its first to its last pages, as one ruminates about what this genre was all about, what it could have been and why it is, for all intents and purposes, dead except on the New York, London and Toronto stages. From Astaire and Rogers to Gene Kelly, Streisand and even the Beatles, it's all covered here. Though it seems awkward to most of today's audiences to see a person in the middle of a scene break out into a song with no band playing behind him on screen, this was the accepted norm and was often the the portion of a film that had an audience soaring in their seats. That such a feeling has all but disappeared makes this book all the more precious, preventing this genre from fading into the wisps of memory. The beautiful thing about this book is the unexpected. Rather than delve into the expected great musicals with the standard American images (which are included in great detail nevertheless), this book includes artwork from other countries, art that is more "in your face" and thought provoking. Who can forget the image used for the Polish version of the 1972 release of "Cabaret?" (Joel Grey's face in the center of four stocking legs bent into the shape of a swastika?) This is the kind of thing that you would never have seen printed or distributed in the U.S., works of art that can only be bought for thousands of dollars today at many of America's biggest auction houses. If you are the least bit interested in the jaw-dropping beauty of what has become a lost art -- the exercise of drawing images associated with the advertising of a Hollywood film -- this is the book to have. This book is part of movie poster maven Bruce Hershenson's exhaustive multi-volume series of books highlighting the history and beauty of what much of mainstream America has only in the last ten years begun to recognize. And that is movie posters are a "popular art" form that can stand proudly next to all other styles of art from gothic to modern, from expressionist to impressionist. Great film art borrows from all of these styles and this volume, which focuses only on posters associated with musicals, illustrates innumerable examples whereby despite the restrictive nature of the genre (musicals), not all posters went in the same direction in terms of style and presentation. From Shall We Dance to A Star is Born, from 42nd Street to Yellow Submarine, Hershenson and Allen have built an incredible archive (and legacy) of images in all of their books, capturing a period (when all posters were drawn by hand and then printed, as opposed to today's method of using photographic stock and manipulating them digitally and printing them by the thousands) that would otherwise be lost forever. A fine book for any collector (get the hardcover edition if you can, it's harder to find; if Amazon doesn't have it, it's available from Mr. Hershenson directly at mail@brucehershenson.com).
Outstanding! The best Musical Movie Poster Book ever!.......1999-11-11
The best Musical Movie Poster book available today! This book has it all. Beautifully photographed and reproduced in great color this book reveals the outstanding artists, designers and photographers that created movie poster "Works of Art" from the early days of movie musicals to the current. A"must have" for the movie memorabilia collector and movie musical fan. Superb!
A dazzling full-color history of musicals........1999-11-08
Eye-catching poster art reflects changing styles throughout the history of movie musicals. This gorgeous collection is another highlight in Bruce Hershenson's delightful collection of poster books, every one of which is a great value and a treasure to own.
Best series on movie posters ever printed!.......1999-11-08
For lovers of film, film history, and specifically, poster art, Bruce Hershenson's series of full-color books is the cream of the crop! And, the quality of printing and photography is superb, with razor sharp images and vibrant colors.

Brilliant adventure.......2006-08-11
I am currently preparing things to GM 'Terror in Talabheim'...and from reading it I have to say it is very well written. It is not your standard city adventure and the plots are not as obvious for the characters as it was in past adventure.
The first part of the book describes in detail everything there is to know of Talabheim. It also includes maps of Talabheim and surroundings.
The second part is the adventure which is divided into 7 chapters. The adventure itself is designed for first or second career characters (first career characters will have a tough time though). The book prepares the GM for all eventualities and still allows the players their freedom.
Not to spoil too much I think it's save to say that I'd buy 'Children of the horned rat' in addition to this book if you don't have it already.

We are new investors and this book has filled in all the gaps. Excellent for anyone in our position. Gives a full rounded view and flipping real estate. Thank you!!
For the beginner in real estate.......2006-07-09
I enjoyed reading the book. It's a good beginning book for someone who knows nothing about the real estate industry. It was well paced and did not ramble into other segments of real estate. It was unclear to me whether the models in the book were pricing labor AND materials, or just materials. The more help the beginner gets, the happier everyone is. Perhaps some consideration could be given to helping beginners with contractor issues? Contractors are very reliable, but so many people fail to realize the contractor may have many clients, or that contractors function best when given COMPLETE sets of wants and desires. Thanks for writing the book. It definitely addresses many issues for the uninformed.
Gerat.......2006-03-24
This book is the best book that I found about forclosed houses. It is well worded and it feels like he is sitting down talking to you rather then being at a boring seminar.
