Baule: African Art Western Eyes is a model of cultural sensitivity and respect. The author, Susan Mullin Vogel, a director at the Yale Art Gallery and a leader in the field of African art for decades, has lived among the Baule, and her deep knowledge, curiosity, and understanding is evident on every page. "There are four Baule words for looking and seeing in general," she writes, "and these are used in revealingly specific ways in reference to works of art. They clearly indicate the kind of looking that is appropriate to different kinds of artworks, and they differentiate among objects that anyone can look at, objects that must never deliberately be looked at, and all the degrees between." Baule art has had a worldwide following for more than a century, but its subtleties and meanings have remained elusive. This important book is filled with pictures of Baule masks, paintings, sculptures, and house decorations--both antique and contemporary. But Vogel also includes documentary photographs of village brides wearing gold jewelry, wood carvers old and young, masked dancers exhorting children to follow them to a ceremony, drummers and other musicians, costumed actors, young men and women with their "spirit" spouses (carved figurines intended to bring them a mate)--in other words, art in context. The book's design is both hip and exquisite; all the material--pictorial and narrative--breathes with contemporary life. --Peggy Moorman

It is a primer for how art works in ethnographic societies........1999-01-23
My brief review of Susan Vogel's African Art Western Eyes will be as if I were writing a letter to Susan Vogel herself. Dear Susan Vogel, I could not fly East to see the exhibit of Baule art from the Ivory Coast, but the accompanying book is almost as vivid as attending the exhibit. Even though African Art Western Eyes is about the Baule, it could be a primer for how art is used, how it works in ethnographic societies world wide. The main thing that impressed me was your compassion, your natural humanity at work in your investigation of Baule art. There are none of the "politically correct" words I often read in books about ethnographic art, but instead a more humble, more respectful, more willingness to discover attitude that allows the reader to experience his or her humanity in the process. Thank you

Funniest Book Ever Written.......2006-07-26
Just like the title for my review- this is the funniest book ever written. Our whole family has really enjoyed Garfield and his sense of humor. This is a book that the whole family will love from child to adult. This book is for everyone. It will leave you laughing till you cry. Enjoy.
Funny.......2006-03-09
I always enjoy garfield's sarcasm, and in this books he makes funny of everything. This book has more text han comics, pay attention if you're looking only garfield comics.
Great for leisure reading.......2006-03-01
I bought this book for my girlfriend since she's a Garfield Fanatic and she loved it. I read it also and it was very funny. Eventhough you expect it to be a kids book, adults can have a good time reading it.
Good Find.......2005-09-06
I bought this book as a gift for a friend. She loves Garfield and immediately fell in love with this book. Funny stuff, great find.
Garfield is witty! .......2005-03-30
In "Garfield's Guide to Everything", there are some silly stuff like Jon said, "Did you know that kissing a chicken cures cold sores". When Garfield says that Jon is a nerd, he said that nerds are usually in mom's basement. Or at the comic book store. Or wearing plastic Vulcan ears at the local Star Trek convention. Kids will love this!

Great collection.......2003-06-14
Anyone not familiar with Lewis Grizzard ought to be in for a treat reading these books. I grew up reading Grizzard in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and I remember laughing out loud at the breakfast table so, so many times. Grizzard was a terrifically funny man, southern to the core and wrote basically about what he knew best- life in the south. Grizzard was more than just a funny guy, however, he was a real writer, a true talent. This collection makes me realize how much I miss him. You don't have to be southern to appreciate Grizzard, however, no more than you'd have to be from the Midwest to like Garrison Keillor. This is Grizzard at his best.
Solid Gold Grizzard.......2001-04-10
Lewis Grizzard is to southern humor what Elvis is to rock n roll, a legend that will live in our hearts forever. "Down Home Grizzard" is an excellent read as well as a beautiful memory to the late king of southern humor. The man is just plain funny.
Book Description
The incomparable Grizzard shares anecdotes of his beloved homeland. No other contemporary humorist knew the South so well, loved it so passionately, or wrote about it so vividly.

Lewis Grizzard writes for the Good old Boys.... and Girls.......2004-05-07
Lewis Grizzard was, like his friend Weyman C. Wannamaker, a Great American. His writing celebrated his Southern Heritage and is full of stories about faithful dogs, good country music and women who looked so good they'd make a preacher break out in a sweat. He often accompanied his beloved Georgia Bulldog football team, and reporting from New Orleans at the 1980 Sugar Bowl he wrote that he had just experienced a turtle soup that was so good it couldn't have been any better if you had known the turtle personally. He was to the written word what Jerry Clower was to the spoken, and I don't think it's a coincidence that when Lewis branched off into stand-up comedy in his later years that his style seemed most reminiscent of the Big Man from Mississippi. Lewis loved his momma, loved his country and loved his culture, and he wrote about the things he loved in a way that if you didn't love them too, at least you could understand why he did. He is missed.
Great "feel good" book for Southerners........1997-03-30
It is truly refreshing to read a book about Southerners by a Southerner who laughs with us not at us. He joins us in laughing at the Yankees!
This is a short and sweet compilation of some of Lewis Grizzard's best newspaper columns. One hundred seventy pages of pure, unreconstructed bliss. It touches on his pet peaves and treasured memories, including food, animals and relatives.
Truly a gem, I read this great little book in one sitting. Rest in peace, Mr. Grizzard. I hope to see you in Dixie Heaven.

If you are Southern you can't live without this book!.......2006-05-15
I love this book and the courage of Michael Grissom for writing it.
"The Confederate soldiers were our kinfolk and our heroes. We testify to the country our enduring fidelity to their memory.
We commemorate their valor and devotion. There were some things that were not surrendered at Appomatox. We did not surrender our rights in history, nor was it one of the conditions of
surrender that unfriendly lips should be suffered to tell the story of that war or that unfriendly hands should write the epitaphs of our Confederate dead.
We have a right to teach our children the true history of that war, the causes that led up to it, and the principles involved."
Senator Edward W. Carmack, 1903
Excellent.......2006-03-19
Excellent book...well written, painstakingly researched, and extremely accurate. Read this book and you'll know why Southerners still don't trust Yankees and you'll understand why the "War of Northern Aggression" is still being fought today.
Good, But Could Live Without It.......2003-01-29
In reading Mr. Grissom's book, I do think he may have gone a little overboard in making sure we, as readers, knew of his Southern pride. I am Southern, very proud of it, proud of what we tried to accomplish in THE war, & I don't care who knows it. And, I display my flag proudly. But to go on & on, I think it was a little over done. Also, for one who takes so much pride in being Southern & having knowledge of the war, as Mr. Grissom makes sure to tell us, I would like to point out a glaring error in on page 158, pertaining to the re-election of Lincoln. The books states, "What a pity the Democrats were denied victory on November 8,1864. With it might have come the end of the War and no ensuing Reconstruction nightmare, but Lincoln's oft-used and well-timed victories upon the battlefield secured for him the presidency that November. JULY HAD BROUGHT VICTORY AT GETTYSBURG AND THE FALL OF VICKSBURG, followed a little more than a month before the election by Sherman's capture of Atlanta-that action taken after much prodding by the embattled president." That would give an unkowning person the idea that Gettysburg & Vicksburg were fought in the summer of 1864, when actually they were fought in the summer of 1863. Many things had transpired since those two battles had ended, including the battles of Chattanooga, Chickamauga,& all the battles of the Wilderness campaign. Plus, Grant was already entrenced at Petersburg. Another thing, was it essential that we know when a certain person was a member of the Masons? Did that make them a better general? I think not. Note: Neither General Lee or General Jackson were members.

The Southern Handbook.......2002-06-24
Grissom takes a stand for Dixie!
This book should be required reading for all Southerners and those who desire to understand the Southern psyche. It is all right to display rebel pride and be proud of the Old South. The truth shall set Southerners free.
This book is continues to be so popular that it is still only available in hard back after being released in 1989.

This is the best single volume book on the horror film, the definitive reference work devoted to the subject. It contains entries on every movie even remotely connected to the genre, whether it is a 19-century silent, a grade "Z" schlocker, or an "art" film by the likes of Fritz Lang or Ingmar Bergman. Each entry contains a full list of credits and a descriptive review. Hardy writes about horror movies with such enthusiasm and intelligence that you feel you're getting the low down on the genre from a sincere and learned friend.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, but seriously flawed..........2005-12-27
In terms of exhaustiveness, this book is probably second to none. Not only does it survey almost every American horror movie ever made, it contains a good lot on international films, especially italian giallos. A new edition of this 1994 book would be most welcome.
However, the authors of this book make the serious mistake of revealing key plot details of most movies, thus ruining the viewing experience of the unwary viewer. This is not how reviews ought to be written. So please do not read the review from this book before viewing the movie, it will ruin it for you!!!
from alien to zomie nightmare this book has it all.......2005-08-20
The overlook film encylopedia:horror, not to be confused with the horror at the overlook hotel HERE'S JONNY and here's my review. The Overlook is quiet simply the only horror movie review/reference guide you will ever need I have tried them all no realy just ask my librarain I mean just go into your local library and ask for a book on say russ meyer or or the spaltter films of the 1980's and see what kind of looks you get.but I not only digress I ramble .to sum up don't miss ths book becuse it is a must have for horror movie fans
The most comprehensive horror film reference.......2002-03-30
The fact that this encyclopedia has not been updated since its last reprinting in 1995 borders on the offensive. That's because it is simply the best reference of the genre I've ever encountered. The book is filled with short to medium length reviews of horror films from every period in film history (up to 1992) and every nation which dabbles in the genre.
The fact that the encyclopedia is that complete is not necessarily its biggest asset. The reviews which compose the book do not simply provide summary, a quick line or two of evaluation, and a useless star rating a la Leonard Martin. Instead, each review examines its subject in relation to other similar works by subject, studio, director, actor, etc. It refuses to provide star ratings, favoring a more detailed explanation of a film's strengths and weaknesses. Also, and this pleases me the most, many films are examined through a critical lense, looking at how the film explores gender, culture, politics, economics, etc.
Combine these strengths with the inclusion of just about every horror film ever made and you have a book horror fans will leave by their bedside.
This encyclopedia treats the horror film genre as it should be treated, an important and vital field of art with a history and voice to be heard. Any causal or serious student of horror films must own this book. It will deepen and enlive their enjoyment of horror, from the absurd and esoteric, to the classic and mainstream.
Essential depite it's flaws........2002-01-06
This book has it's flaws, there is no doubt about that, various films are missing, the writing is overly politically correct, almost every film is considered either racist or homophobic and every time a women is killed it is because the director either hates or fears women. Did they ever think that maybe the reason there are beautiful women in these movies is so that there is something to hold the viewers interest between killings rather than having them nod off because of the inane dialogue. Then there are the racist cannibal films. Most of these films are little more than a chance to show some extreme gore and nothing more should be read into them than that. I must say that I am surprised that they missed the right wing political views that are rife in ZOMBIE. They also give away the ending to half the films.
Still, it's a great book, and I'm not beiing sarcastic. As a reference guide for the horror fanatic it's second to none. I have certainly never read anything with as much information on each individual film as this, as I mentioned before there is sometimes too much information, ruining twist endings and giving away key plot elements before you have had a chance to discover them for yourself, but you just have to be careful how you read it. I've owned this book for a few years now, and have read it through about twenty times and I am still picking it up often and going over old ground and discovering new information. Any horror fan must own this, no two ways about it.
Pretty comprehensive, but flawed.......2000-05-18
I am still waiting for a perfect horror reference guide and this one comes pretty close. It is still missing dozens of titles that are elusive, but not THAT elusive! Most of the missing titles are still available on video at most video outlets! For anyone mildly interested in the genre, this should make you a hardcore addict! For those already hardcore addicts, you will probably cringe at some of the films missing but enjoy the extensive research put into the films. Yes, some pictures would look better in color, but the book's already a fortune, why have the price raised? Don't let the price discourage you, this is the best guide I've seen in the past few years (besides Michael Weldon's exhaustive PSYCHOTRONIC books). If you're still wary about buying it, look at the measurements of the book and how many pages it has. Nuff said.

never came.......2007-03-08
My book was sent to the wrong house, and then deemed "undeliverable". It took about 3 weeks for me to find out that it wouldn't be coming, and about another week for me to get my refund, but I got my refund and was able to purchase the book at the school bookstore, which ended up being cheaper. It was a waste of time, but the refund went smoothly, which is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1.
Music Theory for non-Music majors.......2002-10-08
I use this book in a college course that I teach called Applied Music. It is one hour of theory and one hour of performance. I like the workbook format of this book and the size of the staff
to work with. It is a good book to start with.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for crochet.......2006-08-03
I got this book years ago, hence it was quite dogged eared and loaned it so a fellow crafter..I never got it back, once you look thru this you will see why.
it is perfect in the sence that it brings not only written instructions, but a pattern diagram as well so you can double check what your reading. It is great for anyone who wishes to go beyond crocheting sweaters and blankets.
Dated patterns.......2003-08-30
This is a well done book with beautiful pictures and easy to understand directions. That said, however, the patterns are very dated. The book is a Japanese publication from 1980 and it shows. But, if you are in the market for tablecloth patterns, this might be the book for you.
Easy to follow. Beautiful work!.......2003-05-19
I used the book to create a big table cloth. The table cloth is not only beautiful but looks store bought. I also bought the other crochet books from the same author which I found as good as this one.
The Usual Great Ondori patterns.......2001-08-30
Ondori always manages to find beautiful patterns for their books. This is another fabulous collection of great crocheted items. There are the beautiful tablecloths and bedspreads and the fabulous pillows plus the varied and different centerpieces and even a selection of little coasters and glass jackets. Really a full and detailed collection which every crocheter should have.
Not to be missed crochet book.......2001-07-03
Hey I didn't bought this book for myself but you don't need knowing crochet to see it is top rate book .
Now that I cleared it out .. the color pictures are of the highest qulity on the best paper , along the instruction that every crochet book has there are helpful diagrams that make understanding the pattrens easier .
The person who got this book was extremely pleased with it and with the pattrens displayed with in . ... this one really worth its price and Ondori did a great job publishing it .
Book Description
Nationally known personal finance expert, Terry Savage, shows readers how to find the answers to their retirement questions. The Savage Number provides the hands-on techniques to plan a successful, satisfying retirement. Savage takes readers beyond "guesstimates" and wishful thinking. Instead, she introduces readers to the world of Monte Carlo modeling—the statistical science of modeling multiple alternatives to come up with a range of highly probable results. The process guides readers through the critical decisions about how to invest their retirement money—and how much they can withdraw to live on—so their money lasts their entire lifetime! Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, The Savage Number takes the guesswork out of retirement planning, so readers can overcome those obstacles and comfortably enjoy the rest of their lives.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best!.......2007-07-16
I have purchased and read more than a dozen books resently on personal finance. Almost everyone will get something helpful out of this book. I would say for at least 80% of the Baby Boomers this should be a must read book. The link to Financial Engines is worth more that ten times the price of the book.
I also like All About Asset Allocation by Richard Ferri, and all of Ben Stein's books!
Solid pre-retirement fiscal fix-up.......2006-05-08
Book publishers know a good thing when they see it. That explains why there is yet another book on Baby Boomer retirement planning. But, fear not, "Savage" isn't the description of a fierce retirement savings program that will bite you in the wallet; it's the name of the author: Terry Savage, a personal finance newspaper columnist. In this case, she seems to have linked many of her columns together to form a basic book for novice investors who are planning for retirement. While much of the content may seem very familiar to anyone who reads mainstream financial publications, having it in book form is convenient. We recommend Savage's nuts-and-bolts information to people who are just entering the workforce, novice investors, financial planners and human resource people concerned about issues affecting retirees. It is also a handy quick reference for questions about Medicare, reverse mortgages, long-term health insurance or estate planning. If you are on the verge of retirement, it's a good refresher, although you needed to know most of this some time ago.
The Savage Number.......2006-03-20
My plan is to retire in five years. I have been reading and studying several books to make sure that I am on the right track. I would recommend this book because it gives you a pretty clear picture of what you need to be considering prior to your actual retirement.
Quite revealing!.......2006-01-23
As a babyboomer, I am concerned about my ability to be able tor etire comfortably. Too many other books repeat stale, outmoded advice. Some people I know have followed advice from 'financial experts' and newsmagazine columnists and their retirement accounts are still bleeding red for the last 6 years.
For starters, Savage like Suzie Orman is a true expert. She has studied personal finance and investing. She doesn't just write about personal finance, she lives it.
Savage recommends diversification in good investments. What really caught my eye was here advice on writing covered calls. Too few so called financial 'experts' talk about covered calls. It is one of the best ways to make money off your stocks without selling them. It is also one of the best ways to recoup losses from your stocks. Covered calls can provide better income than say dividend stocks and dividend stocks are a better strategy than leaving your money in savings accounts, cd's, saving bonds or money market accounts.
Terry Savage offers sound advice. I'm following it myself. This new book by Terry Savage is must reading for everyone and remember, it is never too early or too late to start. If you have made some mistakes or a late starter, then I recommend The Savage Number all the more! Great book. Thank you Terry!
Well written & informative retirement suggestions.......2005-09-16
I bought the book and had it more than half read when I finally was forced to put it down. I appreciate the discussion of Monte Carlo simulations in determining recommendations for the accumulation and draw-down of retirement funds (savings & post-retirement income).
