5 out of 5 stars Dazzling!.......2002-01-08

This was a wonderful book. Lovely and full of style and grace. The shoes were dazzling and wonderful. Some that i wouldn't mind being displayed in my house.

5 out of 5 stars Shoes.......2000-04-29

Shoes are more than scraps of fabric and leather to keep your feet off the ground. Contrary to what all the "Practical Pattys" in the world will tell you, shoes set the mood for an outfit, reveal the wearer's spirit and personality. And shoes can even be ART, as shown in this book. My personal favorite is the "glass slipper" made of broken pop bottles welded together. Not something you want to dance until midnight in!

    Book Description

One of the last places you'd expect to find fun is in an elementary-school janitor's cleaning closet. Creator Jef Mallett has given life to Renaissance janitor Edwin Frazier, better known as "Frazz," who took the job at Bryson Elementary School as a struggling songwriter. He then surprised everyone by sticking around after selling his first hit song; the school will never be the same.

Frazz has a diverse cast of charming characters including eight-year-old budding genius Caulfield. He's a constant thorn in the side of bitter and burned-out third-grade teacher Mrs. Olsen, who still remembers having Frazz in her class more than 20 years ago. Caulfield needs Frazz to challenge him as he remarks, "School would be OK if it didn't interfere so much with my education." Hilariously naive Principal Spaetzle wants to be like Frazz. First-grade teacher (and first-rate babe!) Miss Plainwell is getting to know him better. And the kids at Bryson Elementary can't get enough of him! Live from Bryson Elementary is the first Frazz collection and will leave fans begging for more

5 out of 5 stars Frazz: Live from Bryson Elementary.......2007-06-15

It's a great book. I love the way you get to know more about Frazz. I also love the relationships Frazz has with some of the students and teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Comics for the thinkers.......2007-05-07

I really would rate this a 7! It's also really good to see children put in a good light. All parents and teachers should read this and the second one.

5 out of 5 stars Frazz: Live from Bryson Elementary by Jef Mallett.......2007-03-09

The first of the author's Frazz series, hilarious and real life from the first strip to the last. All will enjoy reading this and reliving our youth, a keen insight into the minds of the youth and all others. Read it, you will put this in your library and refer to it often.

    5 out of 5 stars a little-known absolute masterpiece.......2007-01-14

My first encounter with Mr Mallet's work, and definitely a case of love at first sight. I'm astonished at how deeply Mr Mallet can make his characters come alive, while still being at least as funny and deep as any other of my favourite comics.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Frazz.......2007-01-10

If you are not familiar with Frazz (or Mr. Frazier) the Janitor at Bryson Elementary School, let me take a moment to introduce you. Frazz is a triathlete, a song writer, a poet, a literary buff and, surprisingly, a janitor at an elementary school. He is into healthy living, good food, good fun, and loves a good battle ball/eraser fight. He is the shining star of Bryson and is loved by all the kids there. He is a better teacher than some of the other paid staff at the school.

I sometimes think that Frazz is a grown up Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbs)

I really love Frazz. This collection allowed me to catch up on a lot of the old Frazz cartoons. Mr. Mallett's drawing style is very consistent from beginning to end. His humour is always gentle, loving caring, thoughtful and morally sound. The lessons Frazz provides to the kids of Bryson elementary school are deep, valuable, honest, socially responsible, healthy and usually indirect and subtle. If I take the time, I even learn new words from Mr. Mallett.

My teens also love Frazz. Then again, they like Garfield a lot too, so there is no accounting for taste.

My family and I will be reading and re-reading this collection of Frazz cartoons over and over again in the coming weeks.

    Gotta love Frazz!

3 out of 5 stars A Humorous Look At Life Again........2005-11-07

This is Patsy Claimont's paperback of wisdom al la Erma Bombeck. When we have drastic changes in our lives, she describes it as analogous with repairing a cracked pot. "Picture an empty pitcher with a network of cracks down the front. Now imagine that pitcher filled with light and a lid put on the top. Where does the light shine through: the cracks."

In an anonymous email from an unsolicited coward, I was called 'bird brained.' Here, she goes on a treacheous walk looking for birds and feels disappointed, even though the exercise was as good for the spirit as the body; when she looked out the window of her living room, there were six (count them) birds just waiting in her front yard. Her pick of the birds are Ms Hummingbird, Mr. Woodpecker, and Mr. & Mrs. Cardinal. Her friend raises peacocks. My first encounter with these beautiful territorial birds was at a church retreat in the mountains at Monteagle (near Chattanooga); every time, I would go for a solitary walk, they would let me know I was not to come their way. They are "...beautiful but arrogant birds who strut around so that all can see their attire. They ruffle and fan and make noises for attention. Now, no one seems to take them seriously anymore." At the Appalachian Museum at Harrogate, I was surprised to learn that the female peacock is white. Only the male has the glorious colors and arrogant manner.

One day her youngest son decided to get on with life by dropping out of school at the age of six because it was too boring. "Jason," she said, "life is boring. Get on the bus!" Bus token, anyone? "It's life; get on the bus." The story of my present life! The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.

This is an intimately written and insightful work. Anyone interested in women, film, or issues surrounding lesbianism will enjoy the work. Beautifully formatted.

5 out of 5 stars powerful and artfully written blend of fact and fiction.......1998-12-29

In "Home Movies..." Citron uses an interplay of fact and fiction to guide the reader on a journey of secrets. We are never quite sure of who is speaking and yet always sure it is the author's voice we hear. Citron has crafted her written words with the same sense of artistry evident in her films. This book is powerful and artfully written. It is as much about understanding the well-buried and fragmented narratives we each conceal as it is about the story of Citron's individual exploration of her own stories. Communicated through simple language inflected with subtle nuances, the truths among these pages explore the juncture of life and art. Interacting with this text is quite an experience.

This is a really different kind of memoir. It's personal, yet gripping as a novel would be (part of it is memior, part is fiction). It's also thoughtful and analytical without falling into the trapof being dry or over-intellectualized. I learned as much about myself as I did about the author. The blurb on the back cover is right - once I started it, I couldn't put it down.

                      Book Description

In the 80s, harsh market forces confronted Local Authorities and Independent record labels alike. Industrial Evolution juxtaposes Britain's leader Margaret Thatcher's stringent initiatives to privatise Local Government, with Cabaret Voltaire's rise to Indie stardom. On the one hand the Government went head-to-head with the Trades Unions, on the other Cabaret Voltaire's fiercely independent ethics met head on with major record labels, A&R men and the business of "shifting units". Industrial Evolution is a cautionary tale, of rampant Conservatism running roughshod over industrial England.

2 out of 5 stars Getting Pissed with Cabaret Voltaire.......2005-01-16

Anyone hoping this book would delve deeply into the music of Cabaret Voltaire will be sorely disappointed. Yes, you will learn about what sort of alcohol Mal and Richard pickled themselves with every chance they got, but not much else.

The author himself seemed in a drug and alcohol induced coma for most of the time he was hanging out with the band, so maybe he doesn't remember as much about his association with them as he'd like to admit. It seemed for every revelation about the band (they were few and far between) there were a hundred references to getting pissed.

The comments by another reader that the demise of the band had anything to do with corporate greed and the rise of Thatcherism are baseless. Mr. Fish himself concluded that the Cabs simply weren't musicians who could actually write songs. Yes, they were musical pioneers. Yes, they influenced a whole generation of musicians. But could they write, play or sing? No, not really.

I did enjoy reading about Mick's early days at the Council rubbish depot. There were lots of interesting characters populating his workday, which oddly enough didn't seem to consist of any work. Reading about employees whose only job seemed to be making tea and socializing didn't do much to make me feel sympathetic when the move to make local government more efficient started to unfold. I know Thatcher and her mates weren't saints, but the need for change was clearly evident.

I suppose I had different expectations for this book and thus feel disappointed having read it. I grew up with the Cabs and was looking for more insight than this glossed over account managed to serve up.

5 out of 5 stars Polished account of 80's music, political scene in Sheffield.......2002-12-23

Books about Cabaret Voltaire, the pioneering Sheffield (UK) industrial/indie/electronic group, are rare enough. But this book has an extra appeal. The writer Mick Fish takes you on a journey through some of the darkest times in English life and politics and combines this with the tale of Cabaret Voltaire.

The writer will tell you all about the music scene in Sheffield in the 1980's, from the Human League to ABC. Aligned to this will be the story of the grip the Margaret Thatcher government took hold on Britain, and in particular run down areas like Sheffield in the 80's.

You will read all about the decay, the dark nights, the valiant refusal of a city to be undermined by government, the vicious internal wrangling in the local council and political scene. You may ask is this relevant to the story of Cabaret Voltaire? Well yes it is. The writer worked at the local council and also as a Cabaret Voltaire fan he could see the similarities between the two. The rise of CV in the early 80's which was brutally stamped out by the greedy, stubborn nature of the big money record labels which in essence ruined their career. Mick Fish worked at the council and at the same time he watched as Thatcher took hold of power and left Sheffield to rot and decay. A perfect comparison to what the major record labels did with CV, squeezed the life out of them.

At first glance maybe it won't grab your attention, but get over that, if you're a Cabaret Voltaire fan you should have this already! For others if you were into the music scene of Sheffield in the 80's, this book is a must have. For those of you with an interest in the political side of things, this book may be a worthy read, showing how Thatcher's government tried to squeeze northern cities like Sheffield off the map, through her ignorance of the area and through actions in the local political scene.

                      5 out of 5 stars first-rate.......2002-11-19

What should be clear from the title is that no devotee of industrial music should pass this book by. CV should need no introduction to anyone even loosely acquainted with the genre, and their home city of Sheffield must undoubtedly be flagged as one of the most important cities in the proliferation of industrial music during the early eighties.

The author (Mr. Fish) was there. Unlike so much music biz writing that is based on the self-righteous posturing of a critic-turned-ducumentarian, who's only ties to their subject matter are hand-me-downs and afterimages, this is a first-hand account from a true storyteller. Knew the band, drank with the band, traveled with the band, drank with the band some more...

However, Mr. Fish's greatest achievement here was to NOT rewrite the agonizing rock-star biography we've already suffered through time and again. His achievement foremost was to effortlessly, poignantly and humorously carry us through the days and long nights of industrial music's enigmatic reign. 1980's Sheffield becomes our backdrop, Mr. Fish's own life experiences our satiric companion, and Cabaret Voltaire our cryptic guide.

If you are interested in the music or the bands that lifted the mantle of defiance and DIY from Punk's exploited corpse, you will enjoy this. Better yet, even if you don't care about that tumultuous "industrial" racket that some long-lost roommate used to blare to drown out your Journey records -- if you enjoy a very well told story, it's a can't miss. A pleasure to read, difficult to put down, too quick to finish. Isn't that what brought us to the bookstore in the first place?

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money........2007-03-20

Ok I read this book and this other book called Fashion For Profit. This author obivously does not sound like she has really worked in the garment industry. It would be very scary to start a business taking advice from this book. It kind of reminds me of that old sewing lady professor you have in home economics class trying to tell you like you are a 4 year old trying to run a company, scary stuff if you ask me. I got all I ever needed out of Fashion For Profit. That book is strictly business. It's twice as much ,but you get what you pay for. Apparently the author of Fashion for Profit has been voted numerous times in the top 10 most influential in the California Apparel Industry by the California Apparel News. Bottom line you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars This book is absolutely fabulous! .......2007-02-13

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting their own fashion design business. It answers any and all questions and best of all it provides resources that we all need (especially if we have no one to guide us). If you're a student of course you would have the resources provided to you by the school itself, but for someone who is doing this from natural talent and ideas, it's GREAT!!!

                        5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-19

This is a wonderful book for anyone thinking about entering into the retail business on your own. It cover the basics so you know what elements to consider before you take the plunge. Other than this book, you still need to do quite of abit of research on your own.
