a retrospective tinged with nostalgia.......2006-06-28
Lipschutz reminds us in this 40 year retrospective of what the Cold War was like, to Americans who went through it. But, and perhaps more to the point, he writes for Americans and others too young to grown to adulthood under it. It is sobering that it is now already 17 years since 1989, when the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact crumbled.
As the fears and passions have started to fade, the book reminds us why those existed to begin with. Through an extensive survey of contemporaneous films and fiction, he recasts the glory years in an afterglow of nostalgia. Though were those years really so cool? It's easy to laugh at some of the movies and books, but the peril was real, as made clear by a sober reading.

Written by Kazuo Koike of Lone Wolf & Cub fame, Lady Snowblood is a tale of a woman's path in hell.

terriblygood.......2006-01-26
Readers be warned: The exploits of Yuki in this second volume borders on the pornographic and sadistic. What unsettles me most is the fact how good it is in spite of it...or because of it? This is pulp fiction in its purest sense...the mix of sex, violence and action is not for the weak-stomached ones. And the ending of Volume 2...well...the shadow of a big penis looms over Yuki, and i do not mean it in a figuratively sense. How will she get out of this situation? Will she get out?
What strikes me most is how erotic this volume is. How...harsh and yet full of meaning and emotion. Make no mistake this is no teenager's shojo or shonen...this is Gekiga. Be warned!

Memorable Articles and Many Laughs.......2004-02-20
My friend bought this book last year and we became obsessed. We still quote from it on a daily basis. "You hurt me just now when you hit me with that shovel" and "I bet I wouldn't be laughing so hard if it was me in that fire" top our list, as well as "Your honking has shown me the error of my ways." Our amusement never fades and it is as funny the millionth time as it was the first. Even real newspapers remind us of the Onion, with headlines like "Pretty China Tea Set Just a Fake." The Onion really does hit the nail on the head. Some articles are slightly disturbing, but in a funny, if offensive, way. There are some incredibly blasphemous articles, but if you can take a joke you will be fine.+++
Lucky Thirteen.......2003-08-04
Strange to start a reprint series with number 13. Maybe they'll go back and fill in early year's of the newspaper's run. As it is, you have classic stories about the metric system taking off in the inner city (think 9mm). Rude, flippant stuff and very funny.
An excellent read.......2003-07-30
A great book. Even the little "news" tidbits they usually have on the front page of their site, in the sidebars that are not archived, are all there.
A slight gripe: most of the articles are spread over two - and sometimes three - pages. These pages are often not adjacent (e.g. article from p.48 is continued on p.50), so you often have to skip all over the place while other articles distract you.
Another gripe is that this is the only complete volume :). We need more!
Hilarity on every page........2003-07-29
This is one of the funniest books I have ever bought. If you happen to be familiar with The Onion's online news site, you will absolutely love this book. It is filled to the brim with some of the funniest headlines and stories I have ever seen. Such as "Nation's Dog Owners Demand To Know Who's A Good Boy" and "Girlfriend Changes Man Into Someone She's Not Interested In." And even though you know the headlines and stories are fake, it manages to pull you into it's own reality. If you are looking for something to read that will leave you bawling with laughter get this book. You WILL NOT be sorry.
I laughed until I stopped!!.......2003-03-02
If you love satire, you'll love this book. It is completely sick and wrong, and that is why I love it. I have laughed extremely hard while reading it in the morning over breakfast. It brings that crazy year in a better light.

Book Description
A disturbing narrative of vampirism, obsession, and posession of the soul, Vampyr der Traum des Allan Gray (1932) is one of the defining works of psychological horror cinema. It is also a film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, the revered and legendary Danish director of La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1927). Shot in France with private money and a largely nonprofessional cast and primitive sound equipment, Vampyr is to some extent a ruin. There is no definitive print and English versions are marred by poor image quality and subtitles. And yet it is unquestionably extraordinary, a vivid and haunting manifestation of Dreyer's power to make visible on-screen the inner human state.
In relation to Dreyer's long but often frustrated career, Vampyr is often thought of as an uneven or disappointing film. According to David Rudkin, this is a misunderstanding of what the film sets out to do, which is systematically to set the spectator adrift in a mysterious world. In a meticulous formal analysis of Vampyr, Rudkin expands on this contention, pinpointing the sources of the film's uniquely disquieting effect.

Indispensable Book for the Exasperated Viewer of Vampyr.......2007-08-09
When I watched this film, I almost took it out about half way through, such is the wretched state it's in--but something about its haunting, ghostly imagery forbade me from doing so. Reading David Rudkin's take on "Vampyr", I soon discovered that it wasn't just poor film quality that had so tried my patience, but also the unusual and innovative direction of Theodore Dreyer, whose distortion of reality is so jarring in "Vampyr" that it can leave the unwitting viewer perplexed, to say the least. Particularly helpful was Rudkin's treatment of the initial scene, where he not only explains Dreyer's disconcerting approach, but tells how a more conventional director would have shot it. He then proceeds to go through "Vampyr" methodically, analyzing each scene, further shedding light on the logic of its aesthetic form. He saves Gray's coffin scene (I almost thought he'd forgotten it!) for the final chapter, which is the most personal and philosophical. Entitled "The Journey to Our Grave", it's aptly named, considering what he reveals therein.
Of all the BFI books I've read, Rudkin's "Vampyr" has proven to be the most useful, in no small part because of the film's inherent difficulties, which the author explicates with seeming ease and expertise. And while 'useful' and 'enlightening' aren't exactly synonymous, Rudkin has, at least for this viewer, paved the way for a more enlightened appreciation of the elusive film called "Vampyr".
Solving the Mystery.......2007-06-28
As David Rudkin, the author of this little BFI book, freely acknowledges, Vampyr is a problematic movie. Poor technical production, poor sound quality and unprofessional actors (the lead is played by the movie's financier) are just the beginning of the problems. Add to that such issues as dubbing into several languages, chopping by the German censors and various other bits and pieces cut throughout the years and you have a movie that will probably leave many people thinking, well, why bother watching it at all.
Given that the movie Vampyr is not as well known or as well loved as many others examined in other BFI publications, this book will never be as popular as others by that publisher. But for those film buffs who not only enjoy the more obscure movies of days gone by and also want a chance to better appreciate a lost classic, VAMPYR (the book) is a good place to start.
Rudkin examines the filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer and places Vampyr into the larger context of his film catalogue. Rudkin then proceeds to analyze the movie in a more straightforward manner, which is quite different than the approach taken in other BFI monographs. But such an approach works here for a simple reason. For other movies, such as Chinatown, The Birds or Belle de Jour, a viewer can appreciate the movie even without grasping any deeper meaning or symbolism that may be underneath the surface. Yet Vampyr can be a tough view. I watched the movie through once before reading this book and really shook my head wondering what I just saw. I then read this book, paying particular attention to Rudkin's breakdown of various sections, watched the movie again, and appreciated it much more.
What is refreshing about VAMPYR is that it stays true to the mission of BFI, which is to foster appreciation of film over "as wide an audience as possible." All the BFI books I have read have some degree of film analysis lingo that can be offputting. I am not entirely unsympathetic as I know from my own field of work that it is often difficult to explain things without using some professional terms. Yet the best books by BFI nonetheless impart some insight to allow even a layperson a better understanding and appreciation of a movie (see VERTIGO by Charles Barr as another example). The worst get bogged down in ridiculous postmodernist interpretation that really adds nothing useful to the conversation (see THE MATRIX by Joshua Clover as an example; also see not only my review of the same but, hilariously, the only other review of that book as of this date belittling me for not being sophisticated enough to understand things). I am happy to say that VAMPYR falls into the former camp.

Just no good.......2007-09-19
I was really excited to read this. In fact, I bought the big three-in-one trilogy Fiends of the Eastern Front, expecting to devour all three, but since I couldn't stand to read more than the first novel, I'm just writing a review for it.
First, there's no mystery in the book. Right away, the reader knows what's up and why. And I think the same could be said for the main characters, despite the occasional protest that they don't want to believe the obvious, which they do in a paragraph or two anyway.
Second, the vampires are stock. There's nothing new here except that they now wear Nazi uniforms and pilot tanks and planes.
I think there was and still may be lots of room for some good stories here, but this book didn't live up to the potential.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
This definitely has the flavour of the strip I remember. Complete with the can come back from a speck of ash head vamp, Constanta. The pitched battle at the end, vamps v germans is most excellent. Running throughout all this, of course, is the horror of the actual historical panzer battle along the Eastern Front, with the accompanying infantry. Fans of both war and horror should enjoy this one.
War! What is it good for?.......2006-08-09
Hans, Klaus and Ralf are all brothers fighting the Russians on the Eastern Front for Hitler during World War II. Hans, the youngest, is the most dedicated. Hitler and the 3rd Reich enthralls him. His other brothers have seen enough of war to know it's not all it's cut out to be. None of them are prepared for what they run into. Klaus, a pilot, wonders why the Rumanian pilots' canopies are black. How can they see? Ralf, in the Panzer division, finds dead Russians with bite marks on their necks. Hans of the Infantry sees wisps of smoke rise up and kill attacking Russian soldiers. What's going on?
Klaus finds out after he is shot down by a Rumanian plane and ends up in the hospital close to a Russian POW camp. What he sees horrifies him and he knows that he and his brothers must do something. But what? The monsters appear to be all-seeing, all-knowing but Ralf and Hans have seen enough to know that it must stop. So the brothers begin to plan. Will they be successful against Hauptman Constanta and his hoards?
David Bishop has written a plausible story of World War II from the point of the German soldiers who are more terrified of their supposed allies than they are of their enemies, the Russians. It's a well-written, scary little book that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder what Constanta will think of next to torture not only the Russians, but also the German soldiers. If you like the unknown, this is the book for you.

Dissapointing ending of a good story built by the previous two books.......2006-10-06
The first and second book of this trilogy are good. Those two brings up interesting question of how the story will end. Especially in Medusa Plague, where there is an moral dillema of friendship and duty, and the line between what's right and wrong becomes unclear. But the last book dissapoints me. There should be better ending. Stories of the magical gauntlet which absorb magic and makes all mages powerless, other source of magic, the switch of the main character are too much out of the context of the first and second book. It has weak link with the previous two. It is a dissapointing ending of the trilogy. It should have been better...
The Seventh Sentinel : Defenders of Magic (Dragonlance).......2000-06-29
From a differnt prospective I thought the book was very well written, could have been 5 stars........but didnt have the substance. The assasins which seemed strong at the introduction of the second book were made to look like idiots by being killed by Lyim. The ending was the best part of the book .
Definately a Good Introduction to Dragonlance..........2000-01-18
This book was a very good book. The first book, Night of the Eye, got me into the Dragonlance world, and since, it has been one awesome and fun trip. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't read any dragonlance novels, or to those who have but are looking for presents to give friends or relatives to pick up this trilogy as they will find it most rewarding.
GREAT NOVEL!!!.......1999-10-06
This book is one of the best I've ever read, I'm serious. And believe me, I've read a LOT!
Disappointing.......1999-06-08
To offer an alternative view, I felt this was definitely one of the lower end DL novels. I especially couldn't stand where the character developements went, and the tuatha magic had a very un-DL ambience about it. It did have a nice plot to back it up though, culminating in a wonderful climax. This is the only thing making it worth while, and it might be quite a lot better on its own. I preferred the first two.
