You'll Never Outgrow This.......2005-09-26
Though usually demonstrated in colored pencil, these are excellent for any colored media: dry or oil pastels, acrylics, aquarelle, oils, gouache, and so on. Following them will get you to stretch your skills: even if you are in an "orange period" you need to play with the other stuff occasionally just to remember why orange is fascinating by comparison. Especially valuable when you are feeling stale: start where you last left off, or start all over at lesson one. Each time you do them, you do them differently, and you learn new things.

What a great resource for artists of all levels to develop and improve their skills. I have searched extensively for a step by step program to help me become skilled with colored pencil. I love the format which gives an instructional narrative about an aspect and then gives a drawing assignment to direct the artist in an effective exercise to develop the skill. It breaks down the vast (and sometimes overwhelming) body of information into bite sized pieces for the beginner and progresses on to challenge an intermediate to advanced student as well. In all fairness, I must say that I am writing from the perspective of a relative beginner. I don't know exactly how advanced one would need to be to outgrow this book, but I think it would last all beginners and most intermediate students quite a long time! I found the author's illustrations very helpful and the displays of her own work is a feast for the eyes. I wish there were more of them. All told, this is a wonderful book of clear lessons and great assignments.

Not a good read, but an excellent source of info on the series. I found it fascinating that they not only gave bios of the actors but the characters themselves - when they were born, and how they died. Lists all episodes along with guest stars, writers, producers and directors. Excellently arranged, very comprehensive.
Don't waste your money.......2004-05-05
I love Bonanza-its my favorite tv show. So one would think I would prrobably enjoy this book--wrong! Its not only dull, its totally inaccurate. Did the author ever watch the show? It looks like he read some bad fanfiction (the Calder books) and wrote his book from there. There is no excse for such poor research--and why the big price tag? It should be a nice coffee table book for that price. BTW, this book was totally unauthorized by the show's creator. I can see why!
Spend your money on the Greenland book--its the best Bonanza book out there. More entertaining and much better researched.
A disappointment for the price.......2004-01-22
As a fan of Bonanza, I looked forward to getting this book. When I got it, my thought was: "Is this all there is?" There was no dust jacket; just a plain green cover. There was a short history of Virginia City, and black and white pictures of Virginia City as it is today. As a resident of the area, it did not show the any of charm and beauty Virginia City and the Tahoe area has today or in its past history. There were very few pictures of the stars and the episode locations, and all pictures were in black and white. They could have added more trivia regarding the location of the shows (which was very sketchy and assumed you knew where the "Golden Oak Ranch", for example, was located) and other tidbits about the episodes, which they occasionally provided at the end of the episode summary. There was a episode guide, but the summary of the episodes were incomplete. Perhaps it was an effort not to spoil the ending of the show for those who had not seen them, but it would have been better to have a complete summary of the episode. TV Land has better summaries of the episodes! That being said, it had excellent biographies of the stars and the supporting actors, as well as a complete filmography and discography and TV appearances of the stars and the supporting actors. ...

If you are a die hard Bonanza fan who would like all and any facts concerning this show, then this is the book for you. Not many photos but a great wealth of info and a great reference book.

Toasts are probably the only living form of oral narrative poetry in the U.S.; they represent a vital genre of black folklore. They come from various sources: from streetcorners to jails, from barrooms to academic halls.
The toasts celebrate mythological figures from African-American culture, including the famed "bad man" Stackolee who is said to have murdered a man over a Stetson hat; the famous exploits of the "Signifying Monkey," who outsmarts his stronger opponents in the forest by using his native wits; and stories of the loss of the Titanic, famed in black folklore because of its symbolic significance as a failure of the era's powerful white establishment-and the (perhaps apocryphal) story that the ship's owner had refused to sell tickets to famed blacks including prize figher Jack Johnson. Black Vulgar Poetry Collected in Prison.......2000-06-06
This is one of the seminal works in the study of dirty jokes and poetry as folklore. The author collected his "specimens" largely among incarcerated criminals. The collection is well worth while, but the overall work is less comprehensive and not as humorous as the studies by Roger Abrahams, Darrel Cumber Dance and Vance Randolph or, for that matter, the performance art of Rudy Ray Moore. Still for anyone hoping to collect a comprehensive library, this work cannot be omitted and ought to be purchased.

1 of the 3 books devoted exclusively to Toasts, this book contains the biggest anthology of Toasts of the the 3. Quite an enjoyable read, too bad it's out of print - the record that came with this book is now on CD on the Rounder label (same title as the book).

Wow! I was amazed to find this book on foosball. It has great sections on passing, shooting, and defense, and the stuff at the end is pretty funny. I would recommend this book for beginners and experienced players who just want a book on foosball.

Good book to teach you the basic concepts of foosball, but you will not walk away from reading this book being an A+ player. It gives basic advice on shooting, but did teach me the roll-over shot. Defensive advice is not very in-depth, no specific advice on stopping specific shots. However, being the only foosball book out there, it ain't bad.

I'm surprised that someone so seemingly intelligent does not know that stories and specific examples are what make a book interesting. This book was totally devoid of them, but instead used vague generalizations from beginning to end. I read the whole book and was waiting for it to get good. It never did. Don't waste your time or your money. Any positive review must have been written by the author's friends. I would rather eat cardboard that read this book again.
