Comprehensive and Well Presented.......2006-01-30
Dan Flavin is one of the most important contemporary artist but there have never been a comprehensive book of his entire oeuvre. We finally have a book that examines all of his works, and written by Michael Govan who have followed Dan Flavin for the last decade. Dan Flavin's works are fluorescent lights and it have often been difficult to photograph his works showing all the nuances, but in this book, they are very well photographed. This book will serve as the reference book for Dan Flavin works for those who are interested in his works.

Bought this book for my ten year old nephew who LOVES Sherman's Lagoon. He liked this new edition just as well as the others. Sherman's lagoon is a great comic. We have the whole collection for our nephews who come and visit. If you love sarcastic humor, you'll like Sherman's lagoon.

This book was great. I gave it to two woman for a Christmas present. Kept one for myself. And after I read it I passed it on to another friend. All four of us really enjoyed it. All four of us come from a Jewish background, so we really related to the book. But I think other nationalities can also relate and enjoy this book.

Got this book as a gift last week and still laughing!!! Sounds like my mother to a tee, with all the extreme worrying and the unnecessary warnings. There were several phone messages in the book that weren't on Amy's Answering Machine CD. The comments and jokes in her book were right on the money. A real riot!

An Essential Guide and not just for compositors.......2007-07-08
If you've ever been on set and heard the catchphrase "fix it in post" this book is for you.
Not only is the information detailed and thorough, but also extremely readable. Some ironic asides demonstrate Wright has the experience to back up his text. He covers all levels of compositing, from basic luminance keying to green-screen/blue-screen, to color corection and matching foreground and background elements, motion tracking, alpha-channels (to premultiply or not premultiply) and the differences between film and video.
The book is not software specific, and the enclosed exercises and demonstrations can be done on most software with compositing features -- including Photoshop!
Why four stars and not five? The extra money demanded for addional exercises seems to be an unfair gouge. But the book is definitely worth the cover price! Even if you have no immediate aspirations at all to composite something, you'll at least see just how tough it can be.
Producers, Directors and Camera departments (aspiring or experienced) can all learn something here -- and with any luck they'll learn it before they light their next green/blue screen.
Too bad the cover is so damn ugly.

If you're new to the effect industry or a seasoned pro this is still the bible for understanding what is happening under the hood of a compositing software. This is not software specific, but be it 'Shake' or 'an other' this will help you truly understand the what, when and why.
This book together with - Ron Brinkman's 'The Art and Science of Digital Compositing' - also available at Amazon, will hold you in good stead throughout your career.
It truly gives you the 'wow' factor.

Even advanced compositors will glean juicy bits from Steve Wrights' effort. I've read all the standard texts and this one stands with the best. Clear, friendly prose makes this book a comfortable read; read it two or three times and you'll find that you get a little something out of it on each pass. Whether your work end up in print, video or film, this is a must-have book.

A very good SHORT book on openings.......2007-01-18
There is an excellent kid's review of this book which I believe raises many valid negative points, I agree with them and I won't repeat them here. I also concur that "Understanding the Chess Openings" by Sam Collins is an excellent and more up-to-date book that is well-organized and relatively short with a logical structure and lots of diagrams with a minimum of unnecessary text.
What I would like to say about "How to Win in the Chess Openings" is that despite the book being somewhat outdated, it is short at less than 200 pages and covers a lot of ground. What is most useful about it is the good commentary which illustrates many important principles of the opening. Since there are more than a 1,000 trillion ways to do an opening, gleaning principles and themes from as many points of view as possible is an important road to simplifying all the possiblities.
This book covers about 15 popular openings and some of their variations. I have found the commentary to be complimentary to the book "Understanding the Chess Openings" by Sam Collins. However, the text is a bit more dense in the book I'm reviewing in terms of move-by-move commentary and I think this is very useful for a beginner and will help a more advanced player consolidate concepts.
I own several books on openings and for me this is essential. I need to see different openings from a lot of angles to truly internalize the principles. I realize not everyone learns like me, but for those of you who do you will probably find this a good text. In addition, it is often available for next to nothing used so why not pick it up along with "Understanding the Chess Openings" by Collins?
Teaches General Ideas behind some selected openings.......2006-07-31
This is not really a book on "How to Win in the Chess Openings" as the title says. It is a book that covers ideas behind some selected openings. You should not plan to "force" a win in the opening, but to be prepared for tactics at all parts of the game. But, to best be prepared for Tactics in the Opening you should be looking at a book on Opening Traps (there are a couple good ones published).
This book, which is not up to date on the openings, is written in the old form of Descriptive Chess Notation - these should be fixed by an updated version. I personally like "Understanding the Chess Openings" by Collins far better as a general book on the openings since it covers a lot more material and is up to date. I feel Collins book and an opening traps book together is the most ideal way for someone just starting out learning openings to get started.
Not bad for the beginner........2002-12-09
The first chess book I ever waded through, was all about tactics, mating patterns, etc. After reading it, I schooled all of my friends. But I had a rude awakening in my first tournament when I got had by fool's mate in the first game. So I commenced on learning openings in order to get into position to use my tactic skills. How To Win in the Chess Openings is a book I've studied in two phases. The first phase was just learning the different patterns and typical sequence of moves. I really didn't understand the theory and logic behind most of the opening moves. So at first, I was pretty disappointed in the book and left it alone. But now, 5 years later, I've been using the book to really get the logic behind the opening moves and it's finally making sense.
As some of the other reviews have stated, it only goes over a few different openings and not to a depth of being able to learn every variation. However, the openings covered are very common and the knowledge provided is very good for someone trying to get into the middlegame.
The most helpful chess book I ever read.......2002-08-03
If you are a beginner at chess, you need to read this book. After reading it, and using a reasonable amount of diligence on your part, you should have a workable knowledge of the very important principles of opening chess. Without "talking down" to the beginner, Horowitz uses an easy to understand language and very appropriate examples to explain his lessons. He makes learning the openings of chess what it should be- fun and helpful.

Simply put, this is a classic. It is great for beginners, but if you feel you are an advanced chess player, then it will be a good review! I had this book recommended to me by a couple of players with a rating close to master when I played in high school. If it was good enough for them, then it is certianly good enough for me. Now that I have long since graduated from college it is still one of my favorite chess books. The notation is old, but that will prevent only the weakest from learning the time tested concepts shared by a great grand master who understands the game!

Fun and stylish.......2005-10-11
'That many a chessplayer below Master rank has the power, through changing his style, to improve his playing strength dramatically in one sudden leap, is the argument maintained in this little book.' This is not so much a book of particular things to do as it is a change of point of view, according to author Richard Wincor. Wincor is a self-described 'average player', although it is obvious that he is better than that (however, Wincor's name is absent from the major lists of players, so while he may be above average, he did attain the master level ranking).
This is not in fact a book for beginners, or perhaps even average players. It involves strategy and tactics that Wincor describes with little definition to the terminology he uses. This can be confusing to the novice who is unfamiliar with chess writing, so this is perhaps a good second or third book, but not a good first. Besides, perhaps one should learn the game along the more traditional lines before one goes for broke through the baroque.
Wincor's style of writing is fun and interesting to read. He would identify with the second section in Edward Lasker's book, 'Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood'. However, for Wincor, obviously the 'blood' is fun! He writes of the first opening he describes, 'The most aggressive Baroque opening for White is the Dutch Stonewall. Its texture is solid, massive and pent-up, something like a bunching of heavy tanks. When it rolls, it has a chance of flattening all opposition in the King's fortress.'
Wincor's commentary is inspired. For example, in the same Dutch Stonewall game, he makes a comment after one interesting turn of play, 'Mrs. Bruce played that domestic tragedy like an Amazon.' Wincor, upon speculating on the question of whether or not there is such a thing as a perfect opening, draws in ideas from Neoplatonists and quotes the poet Pope (yet hastens to add that Pope never thought of chess as an application of his verse).
Wincor does not promise in this book that the novice will begin winning in grand-master tournaments. However, he states, 'Still they lose, but with more style than before.'
This is a very fun book.

This book was recommended to me by an "A" player back when I was rated 1300. He said it helped his game by 300 pts. It did the same for me. Its kind of like Nimzo on tranquilizers.
A chess humor book! It can't be real!.......1998-10-26
This book is a Pythonesque take on chess openings. And now for something completely different. "Baroque," explains the author, is used here in all its senses: ornate, complex, to some degree indecipherable, and not least sort of ugly. The openings Wincor describes are truly all these things. But if you can appreciate the British sense of humour, you'll enjoy reading it regardless of your attitude or knowledge about chess. I left my copy on a train years ago, and the loss still haunts me.

Authors Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones provide a welcome balance to the many books advising that leadership is a matter of adopting this or that characteristic or technique. They emphasize the situational nature of leadership, the extent to which it depends on followers in a particular organizational context. They infer some basic principles for authenticity and leadership from what seems to be a solid body of empirical observation and interviews, including generally pointed, well-chosen anecdotes showing good leaders in action. We recommend this thoughtful book, which offers an insight that few books on leadership dare to voice. The authors unabashedly assert that even great leadership may not lead to good business results. They further state that an excessive emphasis on results is one of the great obstacles standing in the way of authentic, moral leadership.

This book is well-written. It is easy to read and keeps your interest in general, although it is sometimes a little repetitious and slow. I guess the author repeats the point to make sure you get it.
Some of the author's ideas are new and thought-provoking, but you have to wade through some material which sounds like every other book on this topic, as well. In any case, if you are patient you will take away some neat new ideas that you will find yourself using and referring to.
I like the examples and anecdotes he/she uses to illustrate his/her points - they are really interesting and I have found myself using the examples and referring to them in everyday conversations with people, which is great. I only wish that there were some more examples because it is not always easy to see the point when no example is offered.
The four qualities of inspirational leaders.......2001-10-15
Gareth Jones is director of Human Resources and Internal Communications at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and a former Professor of Organizational Development at Henley Management College in Oxfordshire, England. Robert Goffee is Professor of Organizational Behavior at London Business School. They are the founding partners of Creative Management Associates, an organizational consulting firm in London, England. This article, published in Harvard Business Review's September-October 2000 issue, discusses the research of the authors into leadership (as academics, consultants, and executives).
The authors argue that inspirational leaders share four shared (unexpected) qualities: Leaders show and reveal their weaknesses, rely heavily on intuition and associated timing, manage with tough empathy (passionately and realistically), and reveal (and capitalize on) their differences. Goffee and Jones discuss each of these qualities in detail, explaining why these qualities are so important and how leaders show them. There is a short history of leadership and a discussion of some popular myths about leadership: 'Everyone can be a leader', 'leaders deliver business results', 'people who get to the top are leaders', and 'leaders are great coaches'. In addition, there is a short discussion on female leadership, whereby the authors' advice is that female leaders should stay true to themselves. The final conclusion of the article is that the four discussed qualities cannot be used mechanically. Their advice to executives is: "Be yourselves - more - with skill."
This article is much in line with the latest thinking in leadership: Emotional intelligence (EQ/EI) is as important, or even more important, than traditional intelligence (IQ). I see big relations with the Harvard Business Review-articles by Daniel Goleman (What Makes a Leader?, 1998) and Jim Collins (Level 5 Leadership, 2001), which also emphasize the softer, emotional side of leadership. I did like this article and would recommend it to people moving into management and MBA-students. My main complaint is that the conclusion of this article is somewhat too simple. The article is written in simple English. Please note that this article runs on Acrobat eBook Reader software and is not a .pdf-file.
