Good grief! The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 launches the most ambitious and most important project in the comics and cartooning genre: over a period of 12 years, Fantagraphics Books will release every daily and Sunday strip of Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts," the best-known and best-loved series in the world. Most everyone with an interest in its history has seen the very first strip ("Good ol' Charlie Brown... How I hate him!"), but this first volume follows it up with 287 pages (three daily strips or one Sunday per page) of vintage material in chronological order. "Peanuts" was unique at the time for portraying kids who seemed like real kids, but they also had a wisdom beyond their years, embodied especially by the lovable loser, Charlie Brown, who even in these early years has lost 4000 checker games in a row. We see him don his familiar jagged-stripe shirt for the first time (December 1950) and, at the age of 4, at his peak as a babe magnet. Shermy is the other significant boy, and the girls in their lives are Patty (not to be confused with Peppermint Patty) and Violet. Schroeder is an infant who has learned to sit up in order to play Beethoven on his toy piano. Snoopy is an anthropomorphic dog who plays baseball (April 1952) and has his own thoughts (October 1952). In March 1952 we meet a bug-eyed Lucy, who by November has been designated "Miss Fuss-Budget of 1952" and is pulling the football away from Charlie Brown (Violet had done it a year earlier). Her baby brother Linus arrives in July 1952. The book itself is beautifully packaged, the strips printed large and clear on high-quality paper and accompanied by an in-depth essay by David Michaelis, a 1987 interview with Schulz, an introduction by Garrison Keillor, and even an index of characters and subjects. It's so well-done that any reader will be impatient for the rest of the series, but in the meantime this is a book to savor. --David Horiuchi
Book Description
The most eagerly-awaited publishing project in comic strip history. 50 years of art. 25 books. Over 7500 pages of comics. Two books per year for 12 ¼ years. Fantagraphics Books is proud to announce the most exciting and ambitious publishing project in the history of the American comic strip: the complete reprinting of Charles M. Schulz's classic, Peanuts. The most popular comic strip in the history of the world will be, for the first time, collected in its entirety, beginning in 2004. Fantagraphics will launch The Complete Peanuts in a series produced in full cooperation with United Media, Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, and Mr. Schulz's widow, Jean Schulz. Peanuts is a towering achievement in the history of the American comic strip and represents the apex of Fantagraphics' 27-year publishing history; the strip will be presented in a beautifully designed format that reflects the integrity of the work itself.
Each volume in the series will run approximately 320 pages in a 8 ¾" x 7" hardcover format, presenting two years of strips along with supplementary material. The series will present the entire run in chronological order, including dailies and Sundays, in a three-tier page format that will accommodate three dailies or one Sunday strip per page. The Sundays will be printed in black-and-white.
Acclaimed cartoonist Seth, author of the award-winning graphic novel It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken, and a lifelong Peanuts fan, will be designing the entire 25-volume series, which will emphasize the sophistication of Schulz's work by creating a package that is both austere and direct, reflecting the quiet and melancholy of the strip.
Seth's cover design will feature areas of muted color, with a different main character on each front cover (reflecting the ensemble cast), and a smaller Charlie Brown (reflecting who is, after all, the star of the strip) in the corner. The result will be a tasteful and completely distinctive series, where each individual book will be sharply recognizable and yet clearly part of a consistent series.
Unlike older strips, where publishers have often been forced to shoot the work from decades-old newsprint of variable quality, Peanuts is fortunate enough to boast archival-quality syndicate proofs for virtually every strip in its history. The result will be the best-looking, crispest reproduction for a classic comic strip ever achieved.
This first volume, covering the first two and a quarter years of the strip (October 1950 through December 1952), will be of particular fascination to Peanuts aficionados worldwide: Although there have been literally hundreds of Peanuts books published, many of the strips from the series' first two or three years have never been collected beforein large part because they showed a young Schulz working out the kinks in his new strip and include some characterizations and designs that are quite different from the cast we're all familiar with. (Among other things, three major cast membersSchroeder, Lucy, and Linusinitially show up as infants and only "grow" into their final "mature" selves as the months go by. Even Snoopy debuts as a puppy!) Thus The Complete Peanuts offers a unique chance to see a master of the artform refine his skills and solidify his universe, day by day, week by week, month by month.
Peanuts is the most successful comic strip in the history of the medium as well as one of the most acclaimed strips ever published. (In 1999, a jury of comics scholars and critics voted it the 2nd greatest comic strip of the 20th centurysecond only to George Herriman's Krazy Kat, a verdict Schulz himself cheerfully endorsed.) Charles Schulz's charactersCharlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, and so many morehave become American icons. A United Media poll in 2002 found Peanuts to be one of the most recognizable cartoon properties in the world, recognized by 94 percent of the total U.S. consumer market and a close second only to Mickey Mouse (96 percent), and higher than other familiar cartoon properties like Spider-Man (75 percent) or the Simpsons (87 percent). In TV Guide's "Top 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All-Time" list, Charlie Brown and Snoopy ranked #8.

Peanuts, a huge Pleasure .......2007-03-10
I really enjoyed reading the first volume. It was really funny, and had great jokes. The presentation was wicked and very nice. At the beggining of the book they give you a great introduction and at the end there is a very long interview which is quite interesting to read. I really do recommend this volume of Peanuts even if you aren't a great fan and don't really know anything about it, because it gives you many laughs. I bought the volume on amazon because I never found any other store or bookshop that sold the volume cheaper.
Peanuts, from the Start... Lucky Us!!!.......2007-01-14
The Peanuts has always been, to me, the best comic strip. The evolution of each character of the years has made each of them a part of our culture. I grew up reading the Peanuts, often searching for the latest softback books whenever my mom would haul me off to Gemco or similar stores. The fact that I, and the rest of the world, can enjoy this wonderful series in chronological order from the very start, is incredible. These sturdy hard cover books come with an introduction and an index. In the first volume, the introduction is by Garrison Keillor. The index is a nice touch, as you can look through and enjoy the first appearance of characters and other pivotal moments. These strips hold up very well. I ahve no doubt that were they to be released today, having never been seen before, they would be just as popular and we would soon be calling our friends Blockhead, while they sigh, "Good grief."
Highly recommended. Five Stars!
Charles Schultz's great work.......2006-12-30
"Peanuts" is a strip easily taken for granted partly because its impact doesn't come right away. Often it comes after years of reading the strip. Fortunately, the good people at Fantagraphics are amassing the strips into volumes spanning every two years since 1950.
In this excellent first volume, Charlie Brown is not the singled-out doormat that we know and love but he is part of a group of kids that take turns trying to outwit life and each other in four panels. Shremy, Violet, Patty (not Peppermint) and a very mute Snoopy (who seems to be "owned" by all of them) are not bit players but have equal face time. As the volume progresses, we see Charlie Brown develop into a more "main" character especially with the emergence of baby Schroeder and toddler Lucy, both of whom grow up rather quickly.
You can single out any one strip and Schultz' voice rings clear. How he accomplished combining pathos and defeat with sympathy and wit without resorting to cliches is astounding. Peanuts always cheers me up not only because of the technical beauty of the simple line drawings but because it presents childhood and adulthood as a single space teeming with contradictions and disappointments. That he was able to craft lovable characters out of such a space is testimony to his genius.

Book Description
How do films work? How do they tell a story? How do they move us and make us think? Through detailed examinations of passages from classic films, Marilyn Fabe supplies the analytic tools and background in film history and theory to enable us to see more in every film we watch. Ranging from D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, and ending with an epilogue on digital media, Closely Watched Films focuses on exemplary works of fourteen film directors whose careers together span the history of the narrative film. Lively and down-to-earth, this concise introduction provides a broad, complete, and yet specific picture of visual narrative techniques that will increase readers' excitement about and knowledge of the possibilities of the film medium.
Shot-by-shot analyses of short passages from each film ground theory in concrete examples. Fabe includes original and well-informed discussions of Soviet montage, realism and expressionism in film form, classical and modern sound theory, the classic Hollywood film, Italian neorealism, the French New Wave, auteur theory, modernism and postmodernism in film, political cinema, feminist film theory and practice, and narrative experiments in new digital media. Encompassing the earliest silent films as well as those that exploit the most recent technological innovations, this book gives us the particulars of how film--arguably the most influential of contemporary forms of representation--constitutes our pleasure, influences our thoughts, and informs our daily reality.

Engaging overview of cinema art essentials.......2007-05-29
I have been searching for a text for an Intro to Motion Pictures class and this might be it. I have dozens of other texts which are usually expensive and which attempt to cover everything. This text restrains its focus and in doing so becomes very useful to new readers about cinema. It has a great blend of comment about major theories coupled with specific examples from films. The "key event" structure spans the silent years to Mike Figgis and Timecode. There are many books which might be in a comprehensive film library, but if you are looking for an insightful guided tour of cinema art, I would choose Closely Watched Films.
Fabe ulous.......2007-04-27
I teach a high school film class and have watched Ms Fabe teach. For those not fortunate enough to be able to attend one of her presentations, this book is a treat. If you are bored by thumbs up thumbs down reviews, silly men jumping out of their seat clapping and other dopey reviews, and want to learn more about how to appreciate a film, this book is it. Rent the movie, read the analysis and enjoy the trip. If you want the gossipy phoney back story, this is not for you. If you love movies and want a fun read that will impact how you watch movies, grab this book.
Fascinating look at film genres and how they work, for filmlovers or teachers.......2005-08-08
Whether you are a teacher looking for an exciting way to interest you students in why certain stories have such an impact on us, or merely a movie goer who wants to broaden his knowledge of film genres and, discover, as the author says, "the vast possibilities of the film medium," you'll be fascinated by this book. Book groups can also read a chapter for every meeting, watch the film and enjoy great discussions that the book stimulates.
Marilyn Fabe, an experienced teacher of film at the Universitiy of California, Berkeley, has picked wonderfully captivating, classic films that represent each genre. She explains the genre, the director's personal passion that drove him to make this film and the historical context of the each film. But then, in part because each film she has chosen helped move film making forward in some important way or represents new techniques, she takes us on a closer, scene by scene tour of key parts of each film. The combination of breadth and specificty help raise intriguing questions about how filmmakers and story tellers work their magic on us.
For teachers this book is an entire course in a box. All you have to do is show these great films, have students read the book and your class will have fascinating issues to discuss. For book groups who want to watch these films together after they've read each chapter, this book will provoke great discussions.
But this book also takes ordinary filmgoers on an enlightening tour through the scope and history of film making, not in some abstract purely theoretical way, but by examing each wonderful film closely. The fun is you get to watch the films and snoop behind the scenes to catch a glimpse of how these great films get you so worked up. But the other benefit is that by broadening your context and understanding of films, this book will probably help you enjoy the movies you see even more. It did for me. It's a really great read that's also an ideal reason to go back and look at some classic films you may have seen, as well as discover a lot of great ones you might have missed. For school teachers, book groups and everyone else, there's lots of eye-opening enjoyment in reading this book and in seeing its films - what a delight.
It's all in the details.......2005-07-13
I have read numerous books on film history and theory, but none more readible and accessible than this. What makes Closely Watched Films special, however, is its reliance throughout on the close analysis of single film sequences to illustrate and test the validity of historical points and theoretical assertions. Visual and aural details go by fast when you are watching a film. We are barely conscious of much that we see and hear. But, as Fabe demonstrates, in great films, much of the power comes from the scarcely noticed details, the result of countless artistic decisions, that nonetheless effect us as we sit in the dark. "Close analysis," she writes, "unlocks the secrets of how film images, combined with sound, can have such a profound effect on our minds and emotions." So, the author says, let's slow things down -- thank goodness for the remote -- and really look at what we see and hear in order to answer some important questions about how films tell stories and what makes great filmmaking. Closely Watched Films deepened my appreciation of film, increased my respect for filmmakers, and, with its many examples of close analysis of film sequences, gave me a model for doing my own analysis of movies I want to understand better. It's a wonderful book.

Book Description
This is an ambitious attempt to separate what is actually known (and can be known) about Mozart from the many myths and legends that have grown up about his life and character, notably the circumstances of his death and his alleged immaturity, drinking, extravagance, womanizing, unreliability, and professional failure.
Customer Reviews:
Beware Acqua Toffana!.......2000-02-07
This book is really a piece of work. The author clearly relishes retelling the many ludicrous myths surrounding W.A. Mozart, and the retelling, more so than the delightful debunking of the stories, is the really wonderful part of this book. That said, the debunking is pretty cool too, and will give you a pretty good overview of the biographical literature on Mozart to boot. My favorite tale is the one spun by the wife of General VonLudendorff (yes, one of the Heroes of Tannenburg), a Naziess, about how the freemasons (not Salieri!) poisoned Mozart because, as a nascent german nationalist, he had decided to turn his back on their international brotherhood.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely not par de course.......2007-09-27
I just finished reading this book, and I have to say, it doesn't read like an LKH book at all. I realize that this novel is supposed to be part of a larger picture, but I didn't get the picture at all.
This story is about a young woman who is just starting to learn about the magic that she wields, and how this affects the people around her. But the book also has a cover plot about two guys who want to body swap. Personally, the book could have been far better if the cover plot were actually integrated into the story, and not just show up at the very beginning and at the very end of the story. This novel should have been two completely separate, and better developed books.
If I had to describe this book, I would say, take the story structure of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", coat the outside of it with Anne Rice's "Tale of the Body Snatcher", fill the inside with any generic "beginner witch" story you like, and throw "Night of the Living Dead" on top for good measure. That about sums it up.
If you had to read a novel by Laurell K Hamilton, I would highly recommend that you read her own series, Merry Gentry or Anita Blake.
what a waste of time.......2007-09-03
not even close to the standards set by the first of the Anita Blake series. A one-trick pony of a plot, lots of gore for no reason and shallow character development. It started in the middle of a story, never went anywhere, and didn't do much on the way. Dull, depressing and not entertaining.
Terrible.......2007-08-07
First of all, I love Ravenloft. I love the gothic horror feel of the "universe" that is Ravenloft. I've read Vampire of the Mists at least 5 times. (I highly recommend you buy that book.) I love "I, Strahd" - I am actually re-reading that book right now. (Go buy it as well, you won't be sorry.) I loved Knight of the Black Rose (again - go buy it.)
I have read every book in the Ravenloft series (except for Tower of Doom because I don't have it.) I liked Ravenloft so much that I even bought some of the RPG books just so I could read more about the Ravenloft universe even though I never planned on being a "Dungeon Master."
Now, having said all that ... Death of a Darklord, in my humble opinion is, BY FAR, the worst book in the series.
I found this book painfully boring to read, which is why it took me more than a month to finish a book which, based on the length, should only have taken an evening or two.
Each time I would think about picking up the book to read a few chapters, it felt more like a chore than an enjoyable reading experience. Most people would probably just quit reading a book that they didn't find themselves getting into. But I don't like doing that. If I start a book, I always finish it, no matter how long it takes.
The writing quality of this book was extremely poor in my opinion. You just never care about any of the characters. They could all have died off and no one would care. And the parts of the book that were supposed to be important didn't feel important due to the lack of descriptive detail.
It was one of those books where nothing between the first couple of chapters and the last chapter even mattered. Normally an author will spend all of the book building up character development and making the reader interested in the characters and the situations. But in this book, you simply don't care.
When the final chapters finally come around you are just left with a feeling of "what was the point"?
By far THEE worst book in the RavenLoft series.
Booo!.......2007-07-12
I was so disappointed in the conclusion of this book. After reading the Anita Blake series where this regular girl gets out of every unlikely and devastating situation it just seemed wrong. I expected the girl to come into her magic and do lots of things. It's almost pointless that she had magic in the first place cause she didn't do anything significant with it and yet the story revolves mostly around her. What a waste of a good idea.
Not What I Expected.......2007-04-16
I thought this book was one of the most depressing books I've ever read and I'm an avid reader. If this was the first Hamilton book I picked up I'd never read another. However I do know this is not the norm for her. I was left unsatistied and very sad about the fate of the characters that you had come to care about by the end (charachters were well written, just not the plot). Please don't waste your time with this one.

Customer Reviews:
Not really worth the time........2007-09-24
This one doesn't seem to be a typical Laurell K. Hamilton Book. I should point that out to those considering it. I finished in one day during a slow shift at work and I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. Characters get introduced and then just when you sorta start caring for them they are brushed aside like bothersome ants. The end left me with a bad taste in my mouth that wouldn't go away. The only thing terrifying was that I actually made it to the end of this book. It was quite depressing left me quite unsatisfied. I wanted more but not in a good way. The ending left me feeling cheated especially after you learn what happens to the characters you tried so hard to start liking.
If you want good Laurell K. Hamilton stuff go back to her roots and read the Anita Blake Series before the 'porn' takes control. Basically anything from Obsidian Butterfly and before that. Maybe she'll go back to writing about characters we care about and not this 'fluff'. If not check out Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1) At least you are not left going 'uh... is that it?' when you're done with it.
Book Description
Easy to understand and simple to apply, The Five Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth is one of the most powerful books ever written about money. This book will change your life.
When Richard Paul Evans was twelve, his father, a building contractor, shattered both his legs. With no insurance, no income, and eight children, the family was destitute. At that difficult time young Evans was introduced to a kind multimillionaire who taught him the five secrets of wealth. Today, Evans credits those lessons not just with bringing him wealth and success but with bringing him freedom and opportunity in a world where financial slavery is ubiquitous.
In his signature motivational voice, Evans interweaves those influential lessons with personal stories from everyday people. He explains that money should not be the preoccupation of our lives. Rather, if we follow the five principles, we will be free to focus on God, family, and relationships -- the true nourishments of life.
Wise and compelling, The Five Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth can be read in a single sitting and will leave you with a new view of what it means to be rich -- and convinced that you, too, can build wealth. The Five Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth is endorsed by financial consultants, churches, schools, and marriage counselors.
You cannot afford to be without this book.

A Valuable Resource!.......2007-09-30
The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me By Richard Paul Evans is an added treasure to my understanding and my Library. Living close to 7 decades I was only taught in school & from love ones and friends that the 40 40 40 trap was the only way to live. i.e. Work 40 hours a week for 40 years and then retire on 40% of what you could not live on during those working years.
The last 5 years have opened my eyes (& my Understanding) to the fact, that wealth is not fate or luck, no matter what Professors and Teachers that do not have a pit to hiss in, try to brainwash you with. Learning ... not to listen to anyone that is not living the life style that I want to live and encouraging others (When I can) to weigh advice very carefully, has been one of my committed pleasures.
Mr. Evens has presented these truths in a refreshing way and even what I have heard and read before has become plainer. How many people that have listened to &/or read these facts and passed them on by is mind boggling. Like that Church room full of children and apparently only one, put the lessons into practice!
OH ... By The Way! It is never to late to start ... ... ... and being a Preacher / Teacher for 30 years I have decided that if the devil's pimp can drive a fancy car, (or what ever you consider as a symbol of accomplishment.) then why can't GOD's servant do it too? Do I hear an Amen!?
Yes I agree with some of the others (Reviewers) that this book will be part of our Wedding Gifts from now on. Dr. D. P. Gatten SoCal
thanks!!!awesome one of the best.......2007-08-18
Hi I have read other business books before like rich dad poor dad, David Bach's Automatic Millionaore, Millionaire next door, etc. but this one is the best. Clear, Concise, gave a lot of good ideas how to win in the margins. I was inspired I gave a copy to one of my co workers. To those of you who are thinking of purchasing this, please do so, because it is so simple and it is very helpful. I recommend this as a gift for new couples starting out... its a great wedding gift..
Invaluable.......2007-07-11
This is the best financial book I have ever read. The information is so simple, and yet so significant. Perhaps the most valuable lesson is what the true motivation should be in our pursuit of wealth- making the world a better place to be. Highly recommend.
A grounded approach to building your nest egg.......2007-06-06
There are three things I really loved about this book.
1. It was incredibly straight forward, to the point, and short enough to be consumed quickly and often.
2. He did not get rich telling others how to get rich. So often it seems like those giving the advice, made all of their money giving advice. It is nice to see someone who really made something out of nothing by taking a really common sense approach to the financial side of life.
3. I love his approach to winning in the margins. He recommends that you set aside 10% or more of your normal income for savings, but that you set aside 90-100% of what you make on the side. That was really a paradigm shift for me, because I would normally think of that as my play money.
A quick note on winning in the margins. I guess some people read his book and decided to go off and try to win in the margins with some pretty risk investments and ventures and lost a lot of money (he does not recommend risky investments or ventures in the book and I think it was really frustating to him to see that happen). He decided to set up a company that would let people win in the margins without assuming hardly any risk. If you want to check it out go to www.winninginthemargins.com and type in "debtfree" as your passkey.
I hope you get as much out of the book as I did. It is well worth the money.
