Book Description
For more than fifteen years, Tom Tomorrow has been providing his uniquely acerbic, witty, and altogether clearheaded view of media, politics, and society in his syndicated cartoon. With an ever-increasing fan base, an expanding number of pub-lications who regularly feature his work, and one of the most popular and most visited web-logs (www.thismodernworld.com), the time is now for The Great Big Book of Tomorrow. This massive showcasing of Tomorrow's greatest hits, unseen gems and obscurities, new material, and a color section is the most definitive collection to date of one of the most popular cartoonists ever-a delight for longtime fans and new readers alike.
Customer Reviews:
A great history of Tomorrow-land.......2006-07-26
This book is a detailed history of TT and even some pre-Tom work by Dan Perkins (TT's alter-ego...). As with most history-sweeping treatments, you do have to muddle through the years while he was learning the craft.
This history ends just before the run-up to the Iraq conflict, so if you are looking for repeats of all the post-Iraq cartoons this is not the book to buy -- Get Hell in a Handbasket. But, Great Big Book handles all of the Clinton years (it was a surprise to recall how hostile TT was to Bill...), as well as the 2000 election and TT's attendance at the political conventions of that summer.
I enjoyed this one more than the typical reprint-them-all-format, since TT gave a bit of context and organization to the book as well as a few non-cartoon-based words.
Hard-Hitting Political Commentary.......2005-11-07
I am a HUGE fan of Tom Tomorrow's strips, which are, in my opinion, some of the finest examples of tight political commentary out there.
Tomorrow definitely sticks it to the right-wingers, but it's unfair to say that he is completely skewed to one side of the political spectrum, because he sometimes has less than complimentary commentary on Democrats as well.
There are lots of really good political cartoons out there, but I have never seen a cartoonist who not only can accurately portray the right-wing extremists out there but skewer them so completely.
This book contains a compendium of Tom Tomorrow's cartoons that take us through the Bush I years, the rather turbulent Clinton years, and modern Bush II times. The cartoons are funny, hard-hitting, and well written.
This book will be a treasured possession of anyone who enjoys political cartoons.
READING TOM TOMORROW WILL LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE.......2005-09-13
If you think that your heart will explode with rage whenever you hear anything said by anyone remotely connected with our Shrub-in-charge (or anyone supportive of same), be comforted, there are many people who feel the same way.
Tom Tomorrow is one of those people. His comics are short little distillations of rational outrage, done so cleverly and with such clarity that you will love him for it.
In addition to this collection, you can sustain yourself on his recent catalogue of strips, which can be found on Workingforchange.
don't trust dummies.......2005-04-20
This is a tight satire, in a small box, great points made in the available space.
Who ever wrote the following review is a WANKER:
"Further proof that the radical Left's quest for a sense of humor remains unfulfilled. Tomorrow's work is insulting to anyone's intelligence and, worst of all, not the least bit funny. The political commentary lacks bite, and the humor is puerile at best. His work invites comparisons to Mark Alan Stamaty's Washingtoon, of which Tomorrow is a third-rate imitator." by the idiot.
Have you noticed a lot of reviews...........2004-11-11
...bashing Liberal/Democratic/anti-Shrubya books (such as this great collection, or Molly Ivin's "Bushwhacked!" or similar titles of interest) are all posted as a Single Star by "A Reader"??? I see this again and again, people using the reviews as a chance to spout Rightist vitriol, and none of them have the guts to post their screen names.
I just began reading "This Modern World" when I moved to Georgia and found it featured in our local alternative weekly...and it's brilliant. ALL sacred cows get skewered by Sparky and Tom, and I find it's the first page I turn to--Sparky and Opus are my heroes!

Customer Reviews:
Not What I was Expecting.......2006-09-21
When I picked up "Humor For A Women's Heart" I was expecting it to be filled with short humorous articles. And many of the articles are indeed humorous, especially "The Big Boo from the Balcony" (about kids not realizing they should only boo at sports events); "Yuck It Up" (about learning to laugh at yourself) and "Forget It" (about the inevitable forgetfulness that comes with age). But what I didn't realize until I started reading the book was that the book was published by a religious publishing company and it soon became apparent that the intention of the book was not as much to create laughter but to pass on a religious message. I felt deceived because nowhere on the front or back cover was religion mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against religion, but if I'm reading a religious book, I want it to be by choice, not deception.
humor for the women's heart.......2003-04-13
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It will make you laugh out loud and you will recommend it to all your friends.
If you want a light, uplifting read, this is the book for you. I think everyone can relate to this book in one way or another. If you have had a stressed day read a chapter in this book before you go to bed and laugh your troubles away.It will make a great gift for Mother's Day or any occasion. Know a friend that needs some humor or an uplift, this is your book.
Great-Great-Great!

Book Description
Nearly 200 letters written by the legendary Marx to his daughter Miriam provide a rare glimpse of the complex man behind the mustache.
For everyone who still can't get enough of this legendary wit (and excellent writer), here is an extraordinary collection of almost two hundred letters by Groucho Marx. Following a close filial relationship as it unfolds week by week, year by year, these letters move through three decades of life: from the vagaries of Groucho's career in film, radio, and television, through two divorces and two remarriages, to Miriam's own often tumultuous young adulthood. In his own inimitable fashion, Groucho advises his daughter about her schoolwork, writing, career, growing up, and growing old. He also discusses theater, film, books, and politics with a candor that will surprise and delight even his most knowledgeable fans. Accompanied by photographs from Miriam's personal albums, Love, Groucho reveals a man deeply concerned with his family and a sometimes firm, always loving father who never hesitated to say exactly what he thought.
Customer Reviews:
Letters from Groucho.......2007-10-03
I found the letters to be a very good insight to Groucho and his family life. I had a particular interest in reading about his 2nd marriage to Kay Dittig Gorcey Marx and was pleased to learn more about her.
Well done, Miriam!
A Master Letter Writer.......2004-02-06
Groucho Marx is known for his letter writing. This collection is great, but not as good as The Groucho Letters. Since these are only to his daughter, Miriam, they don't reflect aspects of his personality that show up in The Groucho Letters, which are collected from diverse people, family, friends, and other show people, not to mention Warner Brothers during a law suit.
But I love this collection because Groucho comes across as a loving and concerned parent who can't get enough of his children. He is supportive, generous, thoughtful and witty.
Groucho...no difference between letters and screen........1998-12-15
What better way to judge a man than to see his unedited, straight from the hip letters to his daughter. I have read just about all there is to read on Groucho, but this is my most prized possession. This book shows Groucho's philosophies on family relations, government, love and home life. I felt like a fly on the wall of a private phone conversation. The letters revealed a man who had a heart of gold and a tongue of silver. I was amazed at how his wit in letters was no different from that on the screen. Big thanks to Miriam for letting us look at the private side of one of the funniest men ever.
It made me laugh, it made me cry, but it also made me think!.......1997-12-29
These letters show a very human side of Groucho Marx. Through all this you get to experience first hand his great wit and sense of word play. There were many dimensions to this man, and these letters provide an inside look at what made this man tick. Many thanks should be given to his daughter Miriam for this personal look into her father's life.

Excellent-. Frank Ferrante brings Groucho to life........1999-03-30
Frank Ferrante brings Groucho to life as he reads letters written to Miriam (Groucho's only daughter). He brings a personal flavor to the letters that make you, the listener, feel as if you are listening to Groucho- himself. Groucho's love for his daughter through the many trials they shared shines through Ferrante's performance.

Great book to read.......1999-09-07
This book really let's you know how it was in the midst of the Death Row project. I was really amazed on the life of McKinley Malik Lee, Jr. Buy the book. You will not be disappointed . I hear he is recording great music now (gospel rap) that should be released at the beginning of the year (2000). Wouldn't it be awesome to hear somthing with him and Snoop Doggy Dogg? Platinum baby!!!!! God Bless!!!!!!
tupac is the best ever.......1999-04-19
Ok well Tupac Shakur is the best rapper that ever liver and no one will ever top him. It is a same what happened to him he was very talented and i wish he was still here. I think all the books writen about him are good as long as they say the good points about him to and how sweet lhe was.Tupac Amuru Shakur R.I.P.
Read what realy goes down with Snoop and the Death row crew.......1998-06-02
Just like Li'l Kim says first you get the money then you get the power after you get the power you get the respect. No matter what coast your from most people got respect for Snoop and his crew. Told to you by McKinley 'Malik',Jr. Lee you get the inside info about the rise of Death Row Records. This book is one of the ones that will make you want to keep reading forever. After you read tihs book you'll know more about Suge, Snoop, Dre, and how they came to be.
What a waste of talent........1998-04-04
I am a white female who is into all kinds of music and I found Snoop and 2Pac, both to be very talented people. I felt that reading this book would help me understand the lifestyles of a gangsta rapper. I am afraid all I found was a complete waste of life and talent. Death Row Records was appropriately named. All involved seemed to have encountered death at some time. It's really a shame that people these days are so quick to pick up a gun and use it without regard for human life. Hind sight is indeed 20/20. Nothing will bring Tupac or Biggie Smalls back and still the guns and drugs are out there every day, stealing away the great talents from our world. People wake up. Death isn't the answer to Life, it is only the end of an era.

Bargaining for Advantage - Excellent - .......2007-08-09
Bargaining for Advantage by Dr. Shell is a well-researched and easily accessible presentation of the negotiation schema. A must for anyone in business and every one who will ever have to negotiate anything. A must book for your lifetime.
I bought three copies and gave away two as gifts.

This is the play book to use at the negotiating table. It's fast and easy reading. It will definitely give you a distinct advantage. It will give you the tools and strategies to help you get MORE of what you want while simultaneously showing the other side they got more than they wanted. This eliminates one side feeling they got short changed. Go for the heart not the throat. If you really want to raise the bar take his course at Wharton, like I did. Then you will really have the edge..
PS I have been buying this book for friends and clients since I took the course
Cost of book ~ 10.20 + shipping ... ROI 3000% in 3 WEEKS.......2007-05-27
3000% ROI in three weeks. That is for simple things like auto repair work. At work the potential ROI is even higher. Heck. I haven't even finished the book. I still have much more to learn.
This book is literally a steal. Anbody that fails to read this book is working at a major disadvantage in the new American and international culture.
Excellent..........2007-05-21
As a MBA student & poor at negotiations(:(), I needed to improve upon my negotiation skills...my prof suggested me this book....I found this book full of required information and interesting negotiation stories in the history...though I am not a big reader, I loved it...
A MUST if you do any negotiating -- who doesn't?.......2007-02-13
To many of us the term 'Negotiation' is an abstract word. Prof. Shell converts it to a concrete term with all the steps involved to accomplish the results one desires. Reading the book will give you the information you need -- practicing the steps will give you the skills needed to get what you deserve at the bargaining table. Remember, "We don't get out of life what we deserve, rather what we negotiate."
Book Description
As Director of the Wharton Executive Negotiation Workshop and professor at one of the world's most renowned business schools, G. Richard Shell knows what it takes to survive and thrive in the rough-and-tumble world of high-stakes negotiations. Now he brings his dynamic, step-by-step program for bargaining success to the general reader. Focusing on six key psychological leverage points, Shell shows everyone how they can get more of what they want, gain the confidence they need, counter hardball tactics, and dodge the tricks that others try to play.
Based on the latest research and laced with vivid stories about world-class hagglers such as Benjamin Franklin, J. P. Morgan, Sony's Akio Morita, and Donald Trump, this book provides a realistic, powerful framework for business and consumer negotiations that will help everyone from the inexperienced, anxious negotiator to the seasoned veteran.
"Whether you're buying a car, trying to get the kids into bed, or brokering a major business deal, Bargaining for Advantage teaches you to think on your feet and discover imaginative ways to come to terms with anyone."--Laurie Calkhoven, Editorial Director, The Money Book Club
"A wonderful integration of practical advice that will be useful to all readers."--Max H. Bazerman, Gerber Professor of Dispute Resolution and Organization, Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University
Customer Reviews:
The best book on negotiation I have read so far........2007-02-25
This book is probably the most thoroughly researched book I have read on negotiation. I have read other books where the author tells you to say or do this or that, but does not back it up with a reason. This author, G. Richard Shell, gives the reasons why you do the things he tells you to do. I am a person that likes to understand why something works, so this book answered many questions for me and gave me new ways of approaching negotiations that I had not considered yet.
Mr Shell goes into detail about how to get into a relationship with prospects. Because people like to buy from their friends. Most people will tell you they make logical decisions, but in reality they make emotional decisions and then try to back it up with logic. If you can identify and understand their emotional triggers you can steer your negotiations in the direction you need, which is to help them solve a problem or need that they have.
The "Bargaining Style Assessment Tool" in appendix A is very helpful. It can let you know what your personal bargaining preference is. Once you know your style you can work from your base of comfort and be more effective because you are primarily using the style that is most comfortable for your personality.
The section on "Ethics in Negotiation" is enlightening. While my personal belief is to be 100% honest and ethical with a prospect, he explains the different levels of ethics and how other groups of people use ethics. By understanding the different levels of ethics by personality type you can recognize and understand what the other side of the negotiation is feeling. Everybody believes they are ethical, and the author explains why some people may lie to a prospect and still believe they are being ethical. These are things you need to know when dealing with others, because no matter who you are, there is a good chance that many people you deal with think differently on this subject.
Overall I think this is a very complete book about negotiation and dealing with others.
Casts Spurious Aspersions on "Getting to Yes".......2006-05-09
I'm sorry but I can't agree with the glowing reviews. Shell is very flip and dismissive of other, better writers like Roger Fisher and William Ury, but unfortunately for him, his arguments don't carry much weight.
To be more specific, he derides the concept of win/win negotiation, claiming that ANY negotiation that is concluded is a win/win. This is simply not true, as anyone who has ever been coerced into an agreement can tell you. He also ridicules the BATNA concept (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement), stating that having alternatives does nothing to improve your leverage, if, for example, the potential employer knows you really, really want to work for him. Well, when all other things are equal, I'd rather have the ability to walk away from the table - and have the opposing party know it.
It's a pity Shell felt the need to put down Fisher and Ury, who, after all, did much to further our understanding and improve methods of negotiating.
Well-researched, readable & pragmatic.......2006-01-16
'Bargaining for Advantage' is tightly packed with vivid examples to illustrate various negotiation strategies & tactics, in a high-impact way. Shell has also successfully managed to present findings of various research (psychology, sociology, economics etc.) in a fun & readable, yet not simplistic, manner. His logical & specific advice is also pragmatic for business executives.
Packed with good ideas (but lacking in one essential area).......2005-12-24
Shell's new book is great. He offers a roadmap of ideas to help you negotiate, and it's fun reading. He breaks the book into two basic parts. THe first part talks about six foundations of effective negotiation, ranging from setting goals and expectations to finding points of leverage. The second part offers advice on the negotiation process (e.g., preparation, making concessions, etc.)
His book seems to suggest, however, that negotiating is a rational endeavor. Even the advice on building relationships seems mechanical rather than natural (e.g., giving gifts, favors, etc). This all may work, but I'd find some of the advice hard to do in some of my negotiations with tougher clients who I deal with time and again.
Overall, Shell's book is great, but my own personal style of negotiation is more in line with the new negotiation bestseller by Roger Fisher of Harvard -- "Beyond Reason: Using EMotions as YOu Negotiate." Beyond Reason offers 5 principles that I could easily remember to improve my negotiating effectiveness -- and without seeming mechanical or inauthentic.
Excellent.......2005-11-16
This book is solid. Shell is obvioulsy not just another Ivy League intellectual pontificating from the safety of the "Ivory Tower". You can tell that he has spent significant time in the trenches in tough negotiations. My only gripe is that he didn't go into more detail with some of his examples, or show more of his research. But it is probably just as well since too much detail would have probably bogged it down. This is always a tough balancing act for authors. What Shell has done is write probably the best single book on negotiations for the popular market.
