Book Description
Painter, sculptor, and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett (b. 1915) played an influential role in America's African American and Mexico's revolutionary art communities in the mid-twentieth century. Catlett studied at the University of Iowa (where she briefly worked with Grant Wood), the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Students League in New York before moving to Mexico in 1947.
Focusing on Catlett’s evocative Negro Woman series from 1946–47, this book reveals Catlett’s commitment to social and political issues. All of the fifteen linoleum prints are beautifully reproduced and together address the harsh reality of black women’s labor; renowned historical heroines such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Phillis Wheatley; and the fears, struggles, and achievements of ordinary African American women. Other notable works by Catlett are also included, and an absorbing essay by distinguished scholar Melanie Anne Herzog analyzes the artist’s powerful work from a biographical perspective.

Wolvie Rules!.......2007-08-23
Wolverine has many great story lines and this is amoung the best of them all! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the X-men or comics in general. The whole House of M is incredible, and being a huge Wolverine fan this is my fave.
Going Back to the House of M.......2006-12-19
I admit that I fled from the thought of a huge cross-character cross-over like THE HOUSE OF M. I didn't buy any of the originals, except for a couple of Alan Davis UNCANNY X-MEN issues, but it's Alan Davis -- he's a true classic. Amazon.com offered THE HOUSE OF M collection in my Gold Box, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Wow. I really missed out. And since amazon.com offered that, and I bought, I'm getting offers almost everyday for the other related HOUSE OF M books. I bought this WOLVERINE collection because I love the idea of a universe where Logan and Mystique are partners working for SHIELD. This book does not disappoint in the slightest. It's the best of a long WHAT IF..? tale that isn't quite a WHAT IF..? tale at all. You get to watch these great Marvel characters in fantastic, alternate scenarios. One of my favorites is watching Sebastian Shaw sitting behind a SHIELD desk debriefing Mystique. So many little scenes like this make this collection a true gem.
And Marvel, if you're reading this, you gotta get Javier Saltares and Mark Texera back on WOLVERINE ASAP!

Book Description
If it's true that the average worker will hold an average of seven jobs over the course of a lifetime, Ayun Halliday is anything but average. In her brief thirty-something years, Halliday has managed to rack up an impressive array of short lived stints in the paid job market, including life guard, library attendant, costume designer, actress, waitress, artist's model, professional temp, rental stylist, substitute teacher, party counselor, massage therapist, costumed mascot, and mime, to name a few. In this uproarious collection of essays, Halliday displays a work ethic all employers can admire: wearing a leg brace to work after calling in "sick," quitting the same day she starts by claiming her step-brother had been in a bike accident, and faking "vocal nodes" to avoid telemarketing calls. Along the way, she befriends colleagues and bosses who ignore her falling asleep, stealing food and clothing, and feigning skills she does not possess, and gains the respect of her customers for sheer honesty, which includes detailing her feminine hygiene problems and setting male clients straight on her brand of massage: "I'm sorry, I cannot facilitate a sexual release for you!"

Close one.......2006-11-29
This book hits ever so close to home and the "what if" thoughts that flash through my mind once in a while when I fall into crazy reveries while slogging through the slower parts of my, albeit awesome, job.
I too was a theatre nerd (but, you know, the cool kind) and spent a short period after college exploring the same path as Ayun: half-heartedly working crap jobs by day, and doing experimental theatre [......] Fortunately, my low tolerance for audition rejections and the sickening appeal of paid vacations, forced me to bail on "the life" a mere 18 months later and I became a willing tool of the Man for nine surprisingly swift years (now I'm a used car salesman in Little Rock, jealous?).
Seriously, I loved (and deeply commiserated with) this book. You just can't make this stuff up. Believe me, I tried. Even if you didn't come a whisker away from this lifestyle like I did, the stories will draw you in, make you shake your head and wonder how some people get through the day without being arrested or accidentally killing themselves. These are sociological findings that college professors pay good money for, not to mention being hilarious. Ayun is a wizard at taking all forms of misery, and the jackholes that play supporting roles, and making it funny. This is something I'm put in the position of doing all too often, so I know it ain't easy.
Good one Ayun.
fun stuff.......2006-11-29
What a fun idea for a book! I love the comedic tour through various jobs, some of which I have held (and in the same area, since I graduated from the same University, albeit a decade or so later.) Classic Ayun Halliday style is applied to her adventures through the world of the classic jobs of youth. Humor, honesty, candor, fun, rollicking storytelling; all that you'd expect from this author.
Hilarious, As Usual.......2006-02-27
Ayun Halliday is one of my favorite writers. I've been a fan ever since reading her East Village Inky zine years ago, which she continues to publish. I've also gotten to see her read live, and she is one of the most lively readers I have ever seen. Anyway, this excellent collection of stories about her various jobs is charming, honest, eye-opening, touching (especially the story of her job at Dave's Italian Kitchen), and most importantly, hilarious. The picture of Ayun at the end of her introduction is a perfect represenation of how great this book is: It's nostalgic, a bit-crazed, and funny. My favorite story is the last one, about Ayun's experiences as a massage therapist. Very revealing about the nature of the job, about customers, and about one particualar boss... Quite a character. I highly recommend this book.
Gleefully Hopping!.......2006-02-05
Some of these are the jobs we've all had at some point in our lives: temp, telemarketer (ok, I've had these jobs). Others are jobs we've only thought about: larger-than-life department store Bert and Ernie, failed costume maker.
Wherever life takes Ayun Halliday, antics are sure to follow. Romping with us through these fictionalized reflections on her somewhat checkered career past, Halliday sheds a light reminiscent of Barbara Ehrenreich's on serious issues like poor wages and working conditions... without ever crossing over into self-pity or depression.
Halliday's book, we know, has a happy ending - her regular readers will know she's gone on to become a successful mama, zine publisher, author, wife and more. So this chapter - this series of chapters - reads like a funny preface to Halliday's REAL life, the life that began when all this job hopping ended.
A light, quick and insightful read. Brava!
A funny and thought-provoking review of these many jobs which avoided regular paychecks, hard work, and a dress code.......2005-11-06
As an aspiring actress author Ayun Halliday wished to keep her business commitments and work life flexible: her Job Hopper: The Checkered Career Of A Down-market Dilettante provides both a funny and thought-provoking review of these many jobs which avoided regular paychecks, hard work, and a dress code. This could have appeared under 'humor', but any involved in business and the work world will especially appreciate Halliday's humor, and will find Job Hopper packed with funny realism.

A+ method for young students.......2007-09-26
I just got my first 5-year-old student and thought that the Basic Prep Course might be too advanced for him, so I decided to experiment with Music for Little Mozarts. As I began to look through the book, I was favorably impressed with the way the book balances musical concepts with a story about "Mozart Mouse" and "Beethoven Bear" that I'm sure will intrigue and inspire my new student. Each musical concept is presented simplistically and repeated for several lessons with review even when new concepts are presented. As an example of the logical presentation of material, the first white key that is introduced is D, which I've found has always been the easiest for children to learn since it's nestled between the two black keys. I would heartily recommend this Alfred Method to any teacher beginning a young student.
The best for preschool/pre-K piano students.......2006-01-09
I adore Music for Little Mozarts series, especially the discovery book. The activities include singing, moving to music, clapping/tapping, playing instruments, and music listening. It also has do-re-mi songs, which are good to develop the ear and prepare students in learning scales and intervals. My students love it and I use the series for all my preschool-age students. Highly recommended.

Mozart, discoveries.......2006-03-21
I was somewhat dissapointed as I thought the book would go into more detail. It was too brief a synopsis.
I love it.......2006-03-12
This book is very easy to read. You can always start from anywhere of this book and find no problem to continue. The abundent pictures consolidates its readability. Further, the size of the book is appropriate for you to carry it everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
Great refresher for the novice woodworker.......2007-01-31
I used to like woodworking when I was in middle and high school, but I haven't done it since then.
This book walks through a lot of good information on woodworking and also includes plans for around 40 projects. The book is easy to read and accessible to all skill levels.
If you are new to woodworking or haven't done it in a while, I would highly recommend getting this book.
Outstanding Book.......2006-01-31
I am new into woodworking and this book is the best intro to woodworking I have seen. This is outstanding.
The second half includes doezens of plans for different wood projects. Although I don't plan on making any of these, it gives a great insight into how to build different things.
Anyway, this is highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2005-01-03
I just got this book a few days ago, and I've had a hard time putting it down. There are lots of full-color pictures, with thorough descriptions of almost every aspect of woodworking. I've already learned a lot about different types of wood, how to make several kinds of cuts with several kinds of tools (including suggestions for what to do even though I don't have a large selection of power tools), and have some projects picked out to start as soon as I can get the lumber! It is a very thorough book, unlike several others I looked through at my local bookstore. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in woodworking! It is both fun and informative. Almost half of this substantial book is general background information and instruction, including a detailed glossary, and the rest is a good selection of detailed, well-illustrated plans.
Enjoy! Go make sawdust.
The Not Quite Complete Book of..........2004-12-25
I've been hesitant to review this book because, despite its title it is by no means a 'complete' book, and yet it is well written, and what it does it does well. It is well written, and covers many of the important subjects - Setting Up Shop, Designing Projects, Introduction to Wood, Joints, Finishes, etc. And it provides a host of projects suitable to the beginner. It's hard to fault what it does do, but there are several problems with what it doesn't do.
First and foremost of these gaps is that the book is entirely power tool oriented. Given that a woodworker rapidly gets surrounded by a host of machines, it never hurts to spend time on saws, planes, and the other hand tools that are part of good woodworking. Good hand tools are berely cheaper than machine tools, and selecting the right ones is one key to achieving top-grade results.
The book flies too high to provide important detail on the tools that it does cover. Power saws, planers, drill presses and anything else require knowledge in order to be used safely and successfully. And to make the right choices when purchasing. This book would serve best the beginner who has access to a full shop, not one who is in the process of putting a shop together.
The projects are very straightforward - too simple in some cases to keep the attention of someone who wants to attain levels of artistry. There is no effort to rank the projects by complexity, or connect the skills required to section of the book. This can trap a beginner into a task that takes experience to complete. I'm also informed that some of the shopping lists are incorrect, so make a point of checking before buying. Nothing is more irritating than having something become scrap because you followed the directions.
So be warned that this book is of the greatest value t someone who is both a complete beginner and has access to a full shop. Access to a competent woodsmith wouldn't hurt either. If you fit in that niche the this could be a satisfactory purchase. If not look about you. Several of Taunton Press's efforts may be more useful to you.
Excellent.......2004-09-22
The book is divided in 2, the first 1/3 talks about tools, wood, joinery, etc. It's a great reference, and I find myself going back to it for reference.
The last 2/3 of the book are projects. There are many varied projects in the book. Some are too hard for a beginner, some are too easy. You're liable to find something you can do, and you'll learn a lot in the build.
Book Description
In one of the most original books of its kind ever written, Patrick Hanlon explains how the most powerful brands create a community of believers around the brand, revealing the seven components that will help every company and marketer capture the public imagination -- and seize a bigger slice of the pie.
What is the magic glue that adheres consumers to Google, Mini Cooper, and Oprah, but not to others? Why do many brands with great product innovation, perfect locations, terrific customer experiences, even breakthrough advertising fail to get the same visceral traction in the marketplace that brands like Apple, Starbucks, or Nike have? After years of working with famous brands like Absolut, Ford Motor Company, LEGO, Disney, Montblanc, Sara Lee, and others, Patrick Hanlon, senior advertising executive and founder of Thinktopia, decided to find the answers. His search revealed seven definable assets that together construct the belief system that lies behind every successful brand, whether it's a product, service, city, personality, social cause, or movement.
In Primal branding, Hanlon explores those seven components, known as the primal code, and shows how to use and combine them to create a community of believers in which the consumer develops a powerful emotional attachment to the brand. These techniques work for everyone involved in creating and selling an image -- from marketing managers to social advocates to business leaders seeking to increase customer preference for new or existing products. Primal branding presents a world of new possibility for everyone trying to spark public appeal -- and the opportunity to move from being just another product on the shelf to becoming a desired and necessary part of the culture.

The Why and the How of Branding.......2007-08-13
Primal Branding goes much deeper than most books on branding. It is not just about logos and tag lines but about the seven crucial components which must be present to creating a brand that connects.
The seven attributes are the creation story, the creed, icons, rituals, sacred words, pagans (the opposite or those opposed to the brand) and leaders. Primal branding is not about "building a church, but creating a religion."
"Primal Branding has broken down the elements that help people feel better about a brand." All marketers are searching for ways to stand out from the crowd, to get attention, to connect. Hanlon has given us the blueprint to do just that. But as he says, "If all we needed were a recipe, everyone would be a great chef." He gives us the blueprint, but there is still the need to create the story, to make sure it resonates with everyone, the employees, the vendors and the customers. Branding is still part science, part art and a good deal of luck.
The book is well written, easy to read and filled with many examples of very successful brands - from coca-cola to lego to U2. Hanlon goes behind the scenes to uncover what made the brands successful. He gives great insight into the things we must do to make our own brands successful.
While we have the essential steps to brand our products or services, we still need to bring the emotional connection into the process. That of course is where the art and luck comes in.
If you are responsible for marketing your services, you really need to read this book.
Success For The Business Owner.......2007-05-07
The "buzz" word out of everyones mouth in marketing today is BRANDING yet when I asked people what they meant by that, I could never get an answer that made any sense until I was told about this "WONDERFUL" book.
This very easy read explains EVERYTHING you need to make your business boom! "Many Thanks" to Patrick Hanlon, I am now in the process of "branding" my business with a new understanding and outlook of myself and my work-!!
Definitely worth the time to read.......2007-03-25
Branding isn't that easy, so I feel that anyone trying to boil it down to seven ways to nirvana is a bit simplistic. But Hanlon's seven elements of primal branding make a ton a sense. The emphasis on the creation story is a helpful reminder that brands derive strength from people knowing where they come from and why they exist. While I think it could have made these points in fewer pages, I would definitely recommend this book
Not the first book to read on branding.......2007-02-23
I felt the book was too far off the track on the "how to" portion of branding.
Delivers more than promised.......2006-08-29
This is one of those rare business books that delivers far beyond a restatement of old theory or advocating a personal belief. This book takes a subject that can seem cerebral or intangible and puts it into a language and coherent model that anyone can understand and implement. It is one of those books that both has you nodding "yes, yes, yes" as it makes absolute sense and saying "yes!" I can follow this and change my business. In fact, it is so clear, I think it can be used outside business just as effectively as well. I recommend it to everyone I talk to (except my competitors!).
