This was a great collection of strips. You can see the natural and humorous growth of Zoe, Hammie and baby Wren, who keep Wanda and Darryl constanstly on their toes and in the grocery store. I have always loved Baby Blues and will be sad to see them "grow up"....like the kids in For Better Or For Worse. That's when you know a strip is darn great...when you think of the characters as real and you can really relate to their daily "lives". Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

I can't believe the longevity of this strip and how it has stayed consistantly funny. When it first came out I found it really amusing as it dealt with the pitfalls of being a parent with a baby/children. Now all these years later, they are on their third child and the jokes are fresh and still very amusing. Baby Blues is an excellent series for the young and older fans.

I loved this new Baby Blues collection. It simply had me in tears. I liked it when Wren bumped her chin, the Hammie got greenstick fracture, then Zoe got bruised knuckles, and Darryl sprang his ankle. It was a hilarious Baby Blues story. I recommend this collection to anyone who wants to laugh.

Required reading if you have to "go" outdoors!.......2007-05-14
To the uninitiated, the art of having a dump in the woods probably seems no more complicated than "squat, squint, squeeze and squeegee"! But, alas, as the world shrinks and the use of the world's limited wilderness terrain by outdoor adventurers increases to the limit of the land's ability to withstand the stress of that use, it's just not that simple. When considerations such as ecology, weather, temperature, privacy, courtesy, hygiene, biodegradation, density of camping use in an area, terrain and so on are factored into the decision as to where and how to complete the necessary feat, all is not as simple as it would seem. The methods one should choose are as varied as the terrains one might choose to visit and the times of year in which those choices are made.
"How to Shit in the Woods" is a book that should be read by EVERY person who would choose to venture into the out of doors - whether you want to spend a weekend at the local campground or you're a hardcore toughened backwoodsman heading out into the bush for a week long solo canoe trip in Canada's northern boreal forest!
Be prepared for lots of silly toilet humour, hilarious anecdotes concerning toilet misadventures, lots of tongue-in-cheek jokes, a good number of belly laughs and a very earthy delivery to be sure - but the message ultimately is entirely serious and well worth the read! There is very little humorous when it concerns encountering the leavings of someone who trod the trail in front of you.
Highly recommended for campers of all stripes, sexes, ages and experience levels.

A well written book about a subject that people normally don't think about till they are out in the middle of nowhere and it's too late to find a restroom that is miles away. The title may be offensive to some but, the books provides excellent information
Yawn - don't bother.......2007-01-24
This is a serious subject, and I hoped the book would contain some good info and be a useful and light-hearted read for the inexperienced campers I often escort into the country. Sadly, the useful info in this book would barely fill a magazine article - which is where it should have been. The bulk of it is a painfully inept attempt at humour, over-complicated and pompous storytelling and self-apology. There is simply too much tedious waffle diluting the interesting stuff to make the book useful to anyone as a quick reference, and it simply isn't funny enough to warrant it's size (which, given its smallness, is saying something). At best it is mildly amusing in parts - and at worst it is a painfully protracted waste of paper. Perhaps it is intended to be used for wiping yourself after practising some of the poorly described techniques within?
A Masterpiece of English Literature.......2005-12-07
Ok, it's not a masterpiece of English literature. What is there to analyze here? This is like arguing the merits of Benny Hill. For 8 bucks, buy this book. It has a few practical tips about where and how to deficate in the woods (hence the title). Great. The introduction is a tears-in-your-eyes funny anecdote on that topic that is probably worth the price. Then, you have a conversation piece for your bookshelf that will be appreciated by almost everyone. And, the author goes to some length to argue that this title is NOT vulgar (the book includes a useful lexicon for the word that is also worth the price). And, you'll have something to think about the next time you take a hurried necessary behind a tree or abandon a diaper in the Wal-Mart parking lot! Enough analysis already.
Finally ... a great help for the novice woodsman.......2004-12-13
Few experiences do more to mar the outdoorsy afternoon or the 8 day backpack trek than stepping over a log and discovering your expensive waffle-stompers are filled with the leavings of another hiker. The problem is as old as mankind. At least, it's as old as mankind after he began noticing what was between his toes.
The Bible addressed the problem, probably in the first surviving form, by demanding that people walk away from others with a spear or spade, dig a hole, and cover it. That method works well where the traffic is light. It works less well on heavily traveled forest trails.
Meyer offers 102 pages of suggestions, anecdotes and solutions for novices who want to experience the woods, don't want to create a problem, recognize it's a necessary body function and must be addressed.
I'd recommend it for everyone who plans a trip into the outdoors and isn't already familiar with how to deal with the function in a way that's not objectionable to those who follow. I'd make it required reading for those who go to the areas I'm likely to visit.

Nice coverage of NT response structure (weak NT doesn't need the same kind of structure that a strong NT uses, you don't need to 'protect' the weak NT hand), runouts, defense against.
The reason I don't give it 5 stars is I'd like to see alot more about the impact of using a weak NT will be on the rest of your bidding. How it affects showing unbalanced hands, and subtle implications.
People don't seem to realize that just mixing and matching conventions or HCP ranges for bids can create hidden problems and holes.
Absolutely worth buying, but still not enough to use the weak NT successfully.

What I was hoping for was a book that would explain all the subtle inferences of using a 10-12 or 12-14 NT, especially on costructive bidding. With a 12-14 NT, minor suit opening bids tend to be stronger and/or longer. How does that affect Walsh responses if at all? Any effects on contructive raises or Overcalls or balancing? Does an opening bid of 1 Heart mean something slightly different now? Are you less likely to open a 5 card major instead of a weak NT?
Pros
- I like the authors style and sense of humor. He seems to be knowledgeable and plays with strong players. (I don't want to read books by average players, I want expert opinion)
- Reasonable coverage of the 12-14 and 10-12 NT on bidding. (though I would have liked a lot more)
- Provides a run out structure and defenses, plus some NT responses other than traditional Stayman
Cons
- Almost half the book was on different NT response conventions, or defenses. While tahts fine in a book on NT, what I really wanted was "How to use the weak NT in the context of your other bids". How does the weak NT affect teh meaning of other bids? Forget about opening 1NT, what changes if you don't open 1NT? How will the bidding be different? Whats changed?
- The author even says he could write more on opening/responding with unbalanced hands.
I liked the book, its worth reading, but it didn't have enough of what I was looking for.
I liked this A LOT more than Lufts "How I became a Life master using the Weak NT".
Great Book.......2006-10-07
I was telling a friend that the weak notrump always kills me whenever the opponents bid it, and he recommended this book. Now I feel confident playing against a weak notrump, and I feel like I actually understand what's going on at the bridge table. This book is also great if you want to learn or improve your own weak notrump bidding.
I loved how Mr. Stark gives lots of example auctions and discusses the good and the bad points of everything. I really felt like I came away with a real understanding of the weak notrump and everything that happens afterwards. The book is fun to read too, as Mr. Stark keeps the tone light enough that the book doesn't become boring.
This book does deal with the bidding philosophy of the weak notrump (Chapters 1 and 14), not to mention since Mr. Stark explains the theory behind using all the conventions he recommends, the philosophy becomes clear.
This book does not just emphasize the 1NT opening bid, responses to it, and defenses against it, but goes into much greater detail about changes to your bidding structure when using a weak notrump as well as other ideas. Chapters 5, 6, 7 all deal directly with the differences that will happen with your other auctions. It is true that Mr. Stark doesn't talk about preemptive openings (tournament players often use a 2 of a major opening to show a weak hand with a long suit), but I fail to see why a weak notrump structure would change that in any meaningful way.
In short, this is a great book, and if you ever wanted to learn more about playing or defending against the weak notrump, do not be afraid to pick it up. It's a great investment.
One of Only a Few Books about the Weak No Trump Bidding System.......2006-09-28
Stark's book appeared four months before my own on the same topic. Neither of us knew, while we were writing, that the other was in the process of filling a large and longstanding gap in the bridge literature. Both are good books. A comparison is warranted.
I believe that our two books complement each other very well. Anyone who wishes to learn the weak no trump should read both. Where mine fails, his succeeds; and where his fails, mine succeeds. Together they just about cover it all.
Stark's is more technical, more narrowly conceived, more practical, and has more examples. Mine is more conversational, more anecdotal, more theoretical, and more "fun to read." Stark, I believe, must have been influenced by the style of Mike Lawrence, Eddie Kantar, Bill Root, Charles Goren, and other solid bridge writers. I, on the other hand, feel more influence from Victor Mollo, S.J. Simon, Marty Bergen, Zia Mahmood, and Larry Cohen.
Stark's book has no bibliography, index, or sample convention card. Mine has. He does not discuss the implications of opening suit bids, whether 1-level or preemptive, within the framework of a weak no trump system. I do.
Stark likes Landy and Mohan to defend against the opponents' opening 1NT; I like revised Cappelletti. Stark describes Crowhurst, modified Wolff, the Baron corollary, DONT run-out sequences, and several other conventions; I describe elaborate escape systems, a great variety of specialized cue bids, Klinger doubles, ConFit, checkback Stayman, and many defensive, preemptive, or obstructive bids. We both advocate Lebensohl and puppet Stayman.
In short, Stark emphasizes just the 1NT opening bid, responses to it, and defenses against it. I see it in a broader context, as the centerpiece of an entire bidding system.

The financial performance of an organization is essential for its success. Even non-profit organizations must deal in a sensible way with funds they receive.
In 1992, an article by Robert Kaplan and David Norton entitled "The Balanced Scorecard - Measures that Drive Performance" in the Harvard Business Review caused a lot of attention for their method, and led to their business bestseller, "The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy into Action", published in 1996.
In this book Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton develop and describe the Balanced Score Card, a multidimensional approach to measuring corporate performance that incorporates both financial and non-financial factors.
The Balanced Score Card method of Kaplan and Norton is a strategic approach and performance management system that enables organizations to translate a company's vision and strategy into implementation, working from 4 perspectives:
1. financial perspective,
2. customer perspective,
3. business process perspective,
4. learning and growth perspective.
- Financial perspective: Kaplan and Norton do not disregard the traditional need for financial data. Timely and accurate funding data will always be a priority, and managers will do whatever necessary to provide it. In fact, often there is more than enough handling and processing of financial data. With the implementation of a corporate database, it is hoped that more of the processing can be centralized and automated. But the point is that the current emphasis on financials leads to the "unbalanced" situation with regard to other perspectives. There is perhaps a need to include additional financial-related data, such as risk assessment and cost-benefit data, in this category.
- Customer perspective: recent management philosophy has shown an increasing realization of the importance of customer focus and customer satisfaction in any business. These are leading indicators: if customers are not satisfied, they will eventually find other suppliers that will meet their needs. Poor performance from this perspective is thus a leading indicator of future decline, even though the current financial picture may look good. In developing metrics for satisfaction, customers should be analyzed in terms of kinds of customers and the kinds of processes for which we are providing a product or service to those customer groups.
- Business Process perspective refers to internal business processes. Metrics based on this perspective allow the managers to know how well their business is running, and whether its products and services conform to customer requirements (the mission). These metrics have to be carefully designed by those who know these processes most intimately. In addition to the strategic management process, two kinds of business processes may be identified: a) mission-oriented processes, and b) support processes. Mission-oriented processes are the special functions of government offices, and many unique problems are encountered in these processes. The support processes are more repetitive in nature, and hence easier to measure and benchmark using generic metrics.
- Learning and Growth perspective includes employee training and corporate cultural attitudes related to both individual and corporate self-improvement. In a knowledge-worker organization, people are the main resource. In the current climate of rapid technological change, it is becoming necessary for knowledge workers to be in a continuous learning mode. Government agencies often find themselves unable to hire new technical workers and at the same time is showing a decline in training of existing employees. Kaplan and Norton emphasize that 'learning' is more than 'training'; it also includes things like mentors and tutors within the organization, as well as that ease of communication among workers that allows them to readily get help on a problem when it is needed. It also includes technological tools such as an Intranet.
The integration of these four perspectives into a graphical appealing picture have made the Balanced Scorecard method a very successful methodology within the Value Based Management philosophy.

This book has become a classic in the field of business management. The 'balanced scorecard' has surely been referenced enough to include it in the dictionary. Robert Kaplan is the Arthur Lowes Dickson Professor of Accounting at Harvard Business School. His co-author David Norton is the president of Renaissance Solutions, Inc.
This book tackles gracefully a quite common theme these days: how to turn your beautiful and inspired vision into its corresponding actions throughout your company.
Most companies act on short-term financial reward. In the Balanced Scorecard, actions and rewards are based on the additional aspects of employee learning and growth, internal business processes and customer knowledge. When these are all in alignment, the financial future is rosy.
This book reminded me of the aphorism, "What you measure is what you get." Once you learn what to measure, you experiment with different perfomance drivers.
