This book is not for beginners...........2006-09-14
This book is more of a high intermediate to advanced level book in which Loomis shows you a somewhat elaborate construction process to building the figure primarily from life. He really misses the gesture + building form portions which are the most important, with the exception of passively mentioning in a couple sentences that its important you 'feel' it.
All the Loomis books I feel are purely mechanical in nature with the exception of Fun With a Pencil. If you really need to refine your mechanics AFTER you've acquired the natural element to drawing this text is very valuable. Examples of beginner texts include the Vilppu Drawing Manual, Nicolaides' Natural Way to Draw, and Edwards' Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain. In order to do drawing you need core elements like a scaling element, feeling/ building form element, etc. which all the above mentioned texts are best in giving.
Considered one of the best-ever on figure drawing.......2006-09-11
...and it's an intermediate-level classic! As I understand it, this book went out of print sometime during the 1980's- which was before my time in art school and before the Internet came into popular use. A number of my art instructors had recommended this book, yet at that time I couldn't get my hands on a copy. Now that the Internet is up and running (thanks!), word has spread pretty quickly, and you'd think it wouldn't be hard to keep this thing in print. Many professionals *today* cite this book as being an inspiration in their work. It's 9" x 12" and 204 pages- which is very different looking than his slim & tall Walter Foster collections. Its content is similar to Willy Pogany's The Art of Drawing, and Jack Hamm's excellent Drawing the Head and Figure- very much a classic, mid-20th century style. In any case, this is an *intermediate-level effort* on drawing figures from memory & life, geared towards people aspiring to a career in professional illustration. Included within is his famous *ball/sphere-based* method of head construction, but it's in an abbreviated form here- His Heads collection for Walter Foster really does a *much* better, in-depth job of covering this particular area. Still, Loomis here shows how all figures can be constructed using simplified forms & shapes- He constantly emphasizes how these figures can be placed in perspective, and then rendered to a professional degree. He's very three dimensional in his approach, yet his drawings are mainly realistic looking. This is in great contrast to Burne Hogarth's excellent style, which is also very three dimensional- yet the drawings in Dynamic Figure Drawing are highly stylized in exaggerated 3-D, for exceedingly precise understanding of foreshortening. Loomis' work is *far* more natural & direct; it's especially great for life drawing and commercial illustration- definitely worth considering! P.S. In these pages (p.65)- Loomis himself recommends the excellent books by George Bridgman- certainly a great idea!
An unsung classic .......2004-11-20
Everybody that does or aspires to draw the human figure from imagination, not particularly from live study, should run, not walk, to get this book. A long time secret classic for people working with cartoons, concept art, character design and so forth. If you think you are covered because you got Burne Hogarth's books on the human figure, think again. Not to dis Hogarth, but this one is the real thing.
All you need is Loomis!.......2004-04-14
This book left me speechless. There's not enough stars in the ratings for me to express to you just how great this book is. And the strange thing is, no matter in which branch of art you work, you'll feel as though Andrew Loomis wrote this book just for you.
If you're serious about your art, be you illustrator, comic book artist, animator, fashion designer, or even a games designer, you need to have this book in your library. The text and illustration work together to take you on an odyssey of discovery, a thousand and one techniques that will make your life easier, and your art so much better.
The original was printed in 1943 and has come to be recognised as the bible of figure artists. Although it's out of print now, you can still find a number of great condition reprints. Get one! Keep it by the drawing board and you'll never again be stuck on how to draw a figure, work with horizon lines, and place figures in space so that they relate perfectly to each other and their surroundings.
Ignore the price and get one ASAP. Don't eat for a couple of weeks if needs be, but acquire a copy of this book as soon as you find one.
I'm off to read mine now. You guys don't know what you're missing!
Simply The Best.......2004-02-23
I wish there were 10 stars.
Having stood the test of time, it was first published in the 30's, this book teaches you all that is there to figure drawing.
Andrew Loomis is one of those rare, gifted artists who can articulate as clearly and truthfully using words as he could with lines.
Using very simple tools to define the structure of the human body, essentially the skeleton as the foundation, he teaches how fantastically easy it is to draw the human body from any angle, in any action, and of any type.
This is not one of those 'feel good' books that teaches you to do 'yet another thing'. This is a grand text. absolutely dedicated work, you can see the earnestness in Loomis' anxious words about getting across the details to the reader.
Kimon's 'Natural Way to Draw' is a classic in a different way, where he asks us to discover almost everything. Loomis gives us the crutches. I think a combination of these two approaches can be terrific. thats what I am finding out.
It has been very fullfilling , since I can pick up the artifacts of drawing the figure, and infact drawing anything for that matter, Loomis will lead you to explore and expand, the techniques are amazingly simple, yet absolutely powerful.
He reiterates to see the structure beneath anything, the skeleton, and how it aids us in construction.
Note: the book is out of print, but several online versions are scattered across the Net.

A Wonderful Starter Tool.......2004-02-27
This was my first ever book/kit in the area of cartooning. After a few weeks of study and practice I had already written and illustrated my first children's book! Some of the categories include: how to draw the cartoon head, how to draw the cartoon body, the cartoon animal, marrying expression to dialogue, advanced techniques, original comic strep jokes and character suggestions, draw your own comic strip sample grids, and animation, (plus many sub-categories) this book will keep you interested, busy, and will turn even the coldest of hearts soft for cartooning fun! I highly recommend this!

The Clockwise Man - Fun to read!.......2007-02-28
I loved this book! It was fun to read and took up some time. I read the book on the train to work, in bed before going to sleep and really when ever I could find time to read. It drew me in and I loved it! Great plot and interesting villans and friends. Also a lot of twists and turns!!
An Earthly Child.......2006-03-14
-Justin Richards could write a book with his eyes closed.
-Justin Richards could write a book without using a typewriter, word processor, or dictaphone.
-Justin Richards could write a book even had he lived in the caves at Lascaux and could only use pictograms.
That's how easy Justin Richards makes it seem. "The Clockwise Man" is an intricate puzzle-box of a novel, and yet still gives off the sense that the author wrote it in a couple of weeks in his spare time while doing other, more elaborate things.
This was the first novel in the 9th Doctor series. Representing a change for "Doctor Who" original fiction after 15 years of edgy cheaply-made paperbacks aimed at the narrowest niche of fandom, the new series is made of shorter novels that don't quite capture the intensity of the first season of "Doctor Who", Russell T. Davies style. Well, at least the cover illustrations aren't embarrassingly bad.
Justin Richards, who's been writing interesting "Who" books for a decade, fires the opening gun in the 9th Doctor range -- set, as "Doctor Who" always did best, in a gaslit early 20th century, in parlors and dark alleys and museums. The novel opens with a knowing tug at the first "Doctor Who" TV episode, as the TARDIS lands in a London junkyard. One of the story's mysteries revolves around a young boy who is not quite who he appears to be.
The rest of the plot, in essence, is similar to a forgotten Richards' epic called "Dreams of Empire". A deposed alien dictator is kept prisoner on Earth. The problem is, he is hidden so well (to the characters, if not to the readers) that neither the Doctor, or a futuristic female assassin and her two mechanical helpers, can figure out who he is until it's almost too late. Along the way, Richards lays out a series of puzzles that the characters must solve in order to progress to the next chapter. There's a lot of double dealing, hidden identities, decoy villains, word games, and chess games.
For all the intrigue, "Clockwise Man" never takes any risks or thinks outside the box. When the climax begins in a tower that rises 300 feet above central London, you instantly know how the villain will be dispatched. And although Richards cheats badly by writing a moving death scene for a character who's later revealed to have lived, there are very few surprises in terms of who makes it and who doesn't. Secondary characters check out when you expect them to, in the way that you expected.
"Clockwise Man" is an extremely competent novel, but in the end it's a bit bloodless. As a print debut for the 9th Doctor, the story lacks the gleeful schizophrenia of "Rose", the TV debut. Not a bad read, but in the end Richards' storytelling is just a shade too narrow and too shallow for the small screen.
Hey, It's Doctor Who...not Shakespeare!.......2005-10-13
Okay all, here's my take on this book. First off, for a Doctor Who novel, it was average. It was true to the character of the 9th Doctor (for those of you in the States, trust me on this), and there weren't any painfully embarressing scenes where the Doctor goes completely out of his mind. Secondly, it had a decent story, a tad predictable, but it managed not to have gaping plot holes.
This is a book to read on the train, airport, or during a rainy afternoon. While it's not the best that English literature has to offer, it will put you in the middle of a Doctor Who episode for a few hours.
And really, what else do you read these books for anyway??
Slow and tedious.......2005-09-16
Of the first three 9th Doc novels I hear the most raves about this one but find I like it the least. The plot is slow. The mystery is rather tedius. And the climax is far too technical in writing style to be thrilling, as it should be.
Add in the fact the 9th Doctor acts more like the 7th while Rose is clearly not herself and this book is a letdown.
The Good and Bad of the New Series.......2005-09-15
This is, as even the most blind of persons would know, the first novel based upon the new series of Doctor Who. The novel stars the 9th Doctor and his companion, Rose, no huge surprise since their pictures are on the front cover of a really nicely done hardback book (which, as noted by a few others, is so much better than the weaker paperbacks the BBC has given us for the 8th and Past Doctors). I wont go into the story that is found in this book as most likely, if you are already looking at this book, you have either read it and wish to know what other fans of the Doctor has to say about this book, or you'll get it anyway because you are said fan of the Doctor Who series and you like to collect all the knickknacks of Doctor Who. For me, the book was a pleasant read, over all. The characters were the usual set of Doctor Who characters, from the main characters themselves (Doc and Rose) to the supporting cast. The book is not a complicated storyline, as would be found in the 8th Doctor novels and even more so in the Virgin novels so long ago (at least now it seems so long ago). I really liked the story myself, and I think it is worth reading. But yes, there is a big "however" that I am in need of confessing...
First off, the BBC published the 9th Doctor's novels here in the States before they brought the new series over here. Thus we read the books before we even got to see the first adventure, Rose, let alone the whole series which was recently played on the Science Fiction Network. At least with the 8th Doctor movie, which I will say I'm a big fan of along with the other 8th Doc's adventures, we got to see the movie first and then stepped into the many adventures awaiting the 8th Doctor. Not so here, for me I feel that it is important to let the fans see the new Doctor (in this case the 9th) and then they understand the motivations and the quirks of the main characters. Thus you really didn't know the 9th Doctor and you just had to pick up pieces here and there through the six novels that star the 9th Doctor. It would have been nice to really know how Chris Eccleston showed himself as the Doctor before reading how the 9th Doctor was like in the six books that star the 9th Doctor. Which leads to the second problem...
Apparently, secondly, there will only be said 6 novels of the 9th Doctor at least for a long time being. This is a big problem for me because we the fans do not know much about the history behind the 9th Doctor except for the few snippets we gained through watching the first season (which is a good season and a worthy addition to any Doc Who DVD collection). It would be so nice for the BBC to actually give us novels of how the regeneration between the 8th Doctor and the lead in into the 9th Doctor's adventures... such as the infamous Time Wars...what was this war about? Besides between the Time Lords and the Daleks. How did it start and what really happened at the conclusion? What were some of the adventures that existed for the Doctor between the end of the Time Wars and the first show of the series, Rose? I really hope the BBC lets us know one of these days. For now, there will sadly be only be six 9th Doctor books. This for me is a big let down. I want more novels with the 9th Doctor.
I wont take stars off for these two points of problems simply because these points are not the book's fault. In the end I say that the Clockwise Man is a wonderful addition to the Doctor Who library. There isn't much new in the book that you haven't seen in so many other stories, but still I liked it myself and I think you will too. Also, the story isn't as in-depth as the stories found in the 8th and Past Doctor Who novels, but sometimes that is a good thing. I would hope you'd pick this book up because I think you, as a fan, would like it very much...along with the other new series books (from Clockwise to I Am a Dalek).

bleueyes.......2003-07-25
I've read and re-read all of Karen's books and I thoroughly enjoy them. I think it's great I'm not the only woman with the same dilemas as she and constantly fighting dog hair from a white german shepard and dust monsters! This particular book really hit home on several accounts: wondering minds, living in the here and now instead of worrying about everything, and just reconnecting friendships you've let slip away. I actually laughed out loud when I read certain passages and say "yup" (texas talk). I highly recommend this book to bring cheer to your spirit and help you feel one is not alone.
Finally, something real women can relate to!.......2002-10-15
I truly loved this book. Karen details many aspects of her life, which coincedentally, mirror (at least roughly) the lives of myself and many women I know. She tells it like it really is, and shows us how to appreciate what we have. I thoroughly enjoyed her comments relating to friendships, communication, and even sex (I loved the part about the three sweatsuits and a dark coat). I think most everyone who reads this book will take away from it a greater understanding of self and how to cope with life.

Book Description
Joe Zawinul pioneered a seismic shift in American jazz, incorporating international rhythms and new electronic tonalities.
Customer Reviews:
Greatest book buy in the last five years.......2003-05-20
Exceptional piece of work: the life of one of the most respected musicians on the entire globe. It's well conceived, well told and the life of the man is amazing "per se".
We find the very early remembrances, since the second world war period, the approach to the piano, the first experiencies with other jazz musicians; then the strong determination that led Joe to cross the ocean and start his magical trip with Dinah Washington, then Cannonball Adderley, his friendship with Coleman Hawkins. Dug the chapter reporting when he said "...not yet" to an astonished Miles Davis (!) and perhaps the most intriguing part: the collaboration with Wayne Shorter and his own considerations about Jaco Pastorius and his contribution to Weather Report; then about his perfect mixing with black people, the marriage with a black woman, his "beige" children (as Davis said!) and his deep and intelligent take on the musical world and keyboard technology. Keith Jarrett says that "the only intelligent thing one can do with a synthesizer is just throwing it out from the window". Joe Zawinul is 180 degrees away from this: when he plays he is basically playing his old accordion, only technically more complex. To better understand this book and the important contribution of the man to the development of the contemporary music, one must buy and listen deeply at least the following CDs: Joe Zawinul, (Weather Report's) Mysterious Traveller, Sweetnighter, Heavy Weather, 8:30, Night Passage, Black Market, (M. Davis') In a silent way. Then you can buy more!!!
Joe, we love you, we love the music you did, we thank you for what you gave to our hearts and to our musical growth! God bless you!
:-) V.
extraordinary life, but not an extraordinary book.......2003-04-04
Joseph Zawinul is arguably one of the more interesting cultural figures of the 20th century, perhaps the only non-American to have a profound effect on the music that we call jazz. Author Brian Glasser argues that this book is a "portrait" rather than a biography, aiming for emotional truth over factual specificity. Whatever the intent, the book views Zawinul very much through the prism of his music with the emphasis on the subject's musical career and very little on his life beyond music making. It is not an authorized biography in the sense of after giving Glasser several interviews, Zawinul apparently withdrew his cooperation, forcing Glasser to cobble together much of the book from previously published interviews and accounts. The result is a certain unevenness to the story - aspects of Zawinul's childhood are covered in a fair amount of detail, but in contrast it is only mentioned in passing that at a certain point Zawinul was married and had a family; later, we again learn in passing that his wife is named Maxine, that she is African-American, similarly the names of their children crop up sort of randomly etc.
In some respects this is not a major drawback - the emphasis is rightly on Zawinul's music, and many (most?) readers will already be acquainted with the basic facts of his life. Yet, it would appear to be an extraordinary life, and it is a pity that it is not the subject of a more polished biography.
In a Silent way: A Biography of Joe Zawinul by Brian Glasser.......2002-11-26
This book is a "must have" for any fans of Fusion or Modern jazz music. It details the extraordinary life and career of JOE ZAWINUL, probably best known as co-leader of the influential Jazz/Fusion band WEATHER REPORT. There is extensive input and recollection from many famous names past and present from the jazz world and the author has left no stone unturned in tracking down these superstars for their oppinions about a personality who always left a mark on their playing and careers. Mr Zawinul himself also has a lot to say about some of his associated musicians and there is some revealing and forthright words about his times with MILES DAVIS. WEATHER REPORT were very much a "musicians" band and to this end the book is written in a way that musicians will be very at home with...there is detail of recording sessions, song structures and even technical information on synthesizer set-ups. This may not be appealing to the general public but their interest is easily engaged with all the other stories of the love/hate relationships that the feisty Joe Zawinul formed with his contemporarys. A sure sign of a genius at work.
Wonderful Book.......2002-01-20
One of the things that makes this such an interesting book is that it is about the music as much as it is about the personality of Joe. It has details such as how two Drummers were used on one of the Black Market Tracks. I so enjoyed listening to the songs after reading about them.
Half the book is about the Weather Report years, the other half is pre and post Weather Report.

Mastering the Chess Openings: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Modern Chess Openings, Volume 1
ASIN: 1857443209 |
Book Description
The a...6 Slav is a relatively new phenomenon in a very popular opening, and over the last few years it has attracted the attention of some top class players: Alexei Shirov, Sergei Movsesian, England's Julian Hodgson, and more recently, world number one Garry Kasparov. In this first ever book solely devoted to the a...6 Slav, Grandmaster and openings expert Glenn Flear delves into the secrets of this complex line. He explains the tactics and positional ideas for both White and Black and presents a comprehensive coverage of the theory, concentrating on all the new wrinkles and discoveries. * Written by a prominent openings theoretician * All major lines are covered * Ideal for club and tournament players

A Variation in Flux.......2007-05-03
I suppose most openings and variations in chess are in a state of flux but this one probably more so. The author admits this and attempts to try to give you snapshot of theory as it existed at the time of the book's publication. I was interested in knowing about the variation from White's point of view as I usually try to force my Slav opponents into the Meran with the move order 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nc3 Nf6 and then 4 e3. Mark Morss, in a Hard Chess column mentions that this was Portisch's move and that 4...Bf5 gives Black a bad position. That leaves the Meran 4...e6, the Schlecter with 4...g6 (a solid but passive type variation), and the move the book covers--4...a6. I found adequate information for my arsenal as White. The book is not biased toward one side but does seem to find some good ideas for White in all the lines I might meet. There was also some information about a kind of Delayed Shlechter (4...a6 first then a later ...g6)which was helpful. For my purposes the book was suitable. I gave it one less star just because I really don't like the whole game format that much. I think it gives authors an excuse to do less work. They are able to get by with tracing the history of the variation through games rather than attempting to tell you what the actual best moves for both sides are. To be fair, the author does give an opinion within the text of the games and a short summary at the end of each chapter, but if you like to use opening books as a reference source rather than work your way through the entire thing at your computer or board then the format can get in the way. This book did help to fill in a gap in my repertoire. Fortunately, I purchased it before I actually saw 4...a6 on the board.
Dovetail This One With Your Other Books on the Slav.......2005-08-27
Here is a blurb from IM J. Donaaldson's book on the Semi-Slav (which I think leads to the reason for buying Flear's book). "One interesting idea favored by Larsen and Portisch is the move order 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3" Of course, he is making an argument for playing the Semi-Slav. He starts by saying, Black should not play 4...Bf5 because it leads to trouble after 5.cxd5 cxd5 6.Qb3. This leads Black to choose 4...e6 (Semi-Slav), 4...g6 (Schlecter Slav). Donaldson's book is older so 4...a6 was not given as an option. My assumption is that you don't intend to play the Semi-Slav and Slav together unless you are IM to GM strength (or plan to be) because this is an incredible amount of work. There is nothing written on the move 4...g6 (as far as I know unless there are Grunfeld transpositions or something like that). If you would like to travel the uncharted territory and dig up the games of Carl Schlecter and revive this so-called passive line you could go buy Carl Schlecter books by Crain or Goldman and forge ahead on your own. The last option would be to play 4...a6. It appears that Flear's 170+ page book assumes you know something about the Defense from the beginning. I think this is fair. Though the presentation format is similar, Flear's book does not hold your hand as well as Sadler's book on the Slav. Be aware that Sadler's book is more general in content. Burgess devotes 23 pages to the main line (4...a6). With the Burgess book you see how this line fits in with the rest of what can be played against you as Black. If you intend to play the Slav as Black, my thought is that you should have all three if you can afford it. If you can't then buy the Burgess book. If you are playing this as White maybe buy Burgess, and then Flear, if you face a lot of 4...a6 as White. The Burgess book, unlike the Sadler book, gives White a lot of early divergences. If you play the Slav as Black and have only the Sadler book, the early divergences will take you quickly "out of book". The strength of the Sadler book is that it gives you some idea of what is going on in the middlegames of various Slav lines. That approach was not the mandate of the Burgess book. Sadler does do a nice job of discussing the pros and cons of ...a6 with the idea of defending ...b7 via ...Ra7. The move 4...a6 is a very useful waiting move to see what White will play on move five.
A solid and new all round response to 1 d4, 1 c4 and 1 Nf3.......2004-02-20
If you need a solid all round answer to 1 d4, 1 c4 and 1 Nf3 you may like the new kid on the block in openings - the a6 Slav. The range of possibilities is narrower (i.e. less to learn) than the more well-known Slav 4...dxc4 lines.
Home preparation may be your friend as your White opponent may not be able to devote as much time as you to a minor line against 1 d4. The opening has withstood the test of numerous top GM games over the last 10 years.
Glenn Flear patterns his book after the pleasing format of Matthew Sadler's excellent book: "The Slav." The chapters are organized according to White's various responses to 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 a6. (Games that start with 1 c4 or 1 Nf3 are easily transposed to the a6 Slav.)
Each chapter has an introduction to the main ideas of that line followed by well annotated GM games. At the end is a summary and opening key.
"The a6 Slav" is new (published in 2003) so most of the theory and conclusions still hold. The latest games are through the end of 2002, so you will want to supplement this book with a6 Slav games from 2003 from Mega Database 2004 to stay abreast of the latest novelties.

Not the best book on this subject.......2007-07-07
I own and have read the author's original book: Selling to VITO. That book is worth owning and I recommend it without reservation.
Unfortunately, Mr. Parinello has attempted to take his franchise too far. Secrets of VITO and Getting to VITO do not present the value of the original book. They are a rehash of the author's experiences and offer precious little original thought or suggestions.
The best book I've come across on the subject of calling in to the top of the food chain is: Value Forward Selling by Paul DiModica. It is better in everyway than Secrets of VITO.
Great Info About How to Communicate With CEOs.......2003-11-19
The book focuses on the mind of CEOs and how to communicate with them. Most sales people fear having to sell to top officers, because they have very little experience working with them (other than following orders or being managed by them).
Anthony provides a ton of information on how top officers think and behave. Having this information really helped me to gain enough confidence to sell at the highest level more effectively. I now have a road map and some principles to follow.
On the downside, the book provides too much advice at times. With all the "don't ever...." and "you must do...." bits of advice, the reader might come away overwhelmed and more confused than ever. But Anthony does attempt to distill his ideas down to very basic principles which are very helpful.
All in all a very useful book!
Huge Disappointment!!!.......2003-07-19
Anthony's "Selling to VITO" is one of the best books ever written for people selling big ticket products and services to senior executives. So I had high expectations for his latest book, "Secrets of VITO." Unfortunately, the book is little more than pop-psychology. Consider the following seven of Anthony's ten golden rules:
(1) I will be honest, even when it hurts.
(2) I will touch people in a special way.
(3) I will keep my thoughts and ideas simple and straightforward.
(4) I will show my positive emotions.
(5) I will say I am sorry when I mess up.
(6) I will look at people when I talk to them...
(9) I will not settle for the word "no."
Could Anthony be any more trite? What a huge disappointment. My advice? Buy Anthony's "Selling to VITO" (if you haven't already)... but don't even think about purchasing this book. Overall grade: D/D-
