Book Description
"The definitive life of O'Keeffe."Hilton Kramer, Los Angeles Times
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was one of the most successful American artists of the twentieth century: her arresting paintings of enormous, intimately rendered flowers, desert landscapes, and stark white cow skulls are seminal works of modern art. But behind O'Keeffe's bold work and celebrity was a woman misunderstood by even her most ardent admirers. This large, finely balanced biography offers an astonishingly honest portrayal of a life shrouded in myth.
When she was still unknown as an artist, O'Keeffe married Alfred Stieglitz, twenty-three years her senior and well established as a pioneer in art photography. The relationship was physically and intellectually passionate, but Stieglitz was a man of the world. Through the author's access to previously unavailable materialsincluding interviews with Dorothy Norman, Alfred Stieglitz's longtime paramourwe are offered new knowledge about O'Keeffe's defining relationships and the effect of her husband's infidelity. Driven to a nervous breakdown by the Norman affair, O'Keeffe relocated and redefined herself in New Mexico, where she created her unforgettable signature paintings. 16 pages of black-and-white illustrations, 32 color plates.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent information regarding Georgia's life.......2007-03-03
Well written book and excellent research. Enjoyed very much.
Tremendous and important detail lacking in other biographies.......2006-06-20
Detailed and thoughtful, and a riveting read if you really want to understand this artist's life. After reading dozens of books and articles about O'Keeffe during the course of my own research on New York-inspired artwork, I didn't think another O'Keeffe biography was necessary. But I'm grateful I found this book. I learned so much more about this artist--about her friendships, her travels beyond New York and the Southwest, and her abstract works.
Gave me a new appreciation for O'Keeffe's art.......2005-06-28
I never really liked O'Keeffe's more abstract paintings until I read this biography. Now I can look at them with an improved understanding of what they mean and what she managed to accomplish for female artists everywhere. It's equally nice to see the artist as a person with her own foibles and nuances. The author has done a remarkable job here.
More than you ever wanted to know about Georgia O'Keeffe.......2005-06-06
Hunter Drohojowska-Philp is a sound writer, one who obviously does her research inexhaustibly, and with a background in art criticism she also speaks with authority and an informed eye. But she does go on....
For those who want to know more about the idiosyncrasies of this American idol then this is the resource of choice. We learn more about the frustrations, self doubt, love affairs, and general personality quirks than in all the other biographies combined. We also learn about each painting in depth which I suppose is like a verbal catalogue raissonne and for that we should be thankful.
It is just that with all great artists not everything they make is of show quality and it is this inclusion of all of the odds and major ends of O'Keeffe's work that borders on tiresome. It is with a good degree of relief that the last page of this nearly 500-page opus is reached.
Hunter Drohojowska-Philp obviously holds Georgia O'Keeffe in a realm close to Valhalla and that is all well and good. She writes with vigor and determination and certainly informs us of the 'full bloom' of her title. In the end this is a valuable volume for the archives, but not a book to recommend for the casual reader who has already grown visually fatigued with the Santa Fe posters of poppies, ox skulls, and datura flowers. Grady Harp, June 05

Customer Reviews:
Part of the whole........2007-07-17
First, don't read this manga until you have finished both the Read Or Die OVA and the Read Or Dream TV series. The mangas were based ON the anime, so they should come first. The information in the books, in the form of flashbacks, really only make sense after viewing those anime episodes. Otherwise it may not make sense
The artwork is good, the story is smooth but the action is sometimes hard to follow. The fight scenes can get right down confusing. At least Ms. Readman, Paper, is still as cute and as weird as ever. Some of the subject matter is adult, so only for older teens.
PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR BOOKS TOO MUCH.......2006-05-30
Yomiko Readman is what is known in the world of Read Or Die as a "Paper Master", meaning she can fashion all kinds of things, including weapons, vehicles, and shields to use in her role as an agent of the British Library under the codename "The Paper". On top of that she's what you would call an ardent bibliophile. Actually, that's a bit too mild of a description. Yomiko gets sexually aroused near a good book and falls in love with them. The rarer the book, the more ecstasy she enjoys! As the manga opens she, along with her boss, Joker, meet up with an illicit rare book dealer and the deal soon goes south. The main storyline of the book concerns a young high school student who is also a famous writer. Her name is Nenene Sumiregawa and Yomiko has fallen in love with her through reading her work. Someone has been stalking Nenene and Yomiko has been sent in undercover as a subsitute teacher to keep an eye on her. It's a good thing too because soon after Yomiko arrives there is a kidnapping attempt!
I really wanted to like this manga because I have enjoyed the anime incarnations of ROD, and also because while not a bibliolunatic like Yomiko, I do have a love for reading, so I can relate to the subject. But I was really disappointed with Volume 1. Yomiko, instead of being the likable but powerful klutz in the anime is here seen as a complete loser missing a brain. The villains of the piece are just as bad. Fire Inc, a woman who can bend flames to her will, initiates her powers by striking giant matches! The main villain is even worse, with overblown dialogue and laughing telepathically transferred from Dr. Evil! It just came off as a little kid's book instead of a more sophisticated read. The anime had an air of slick coolness which this manga sorely missed. While this book was pretty awful, it was entertaining enough in its own sorry way. The art was great but the dialogue bubbles were poorly placed or did not indicate direction, so a lot of the time you are confused as to who is talking. I read a lot of manga, so if I get confused, that means a more casual reader would be at a total loss. What a waste. Another strike against this book is that the sound effects are translated totally into English. I much prefer the Japanese to be left intact with small English translations underneath when needed. If you're a fan of the ROD franchise, it's worth reading this to get more of the story, but for other readers, skip it.
Gorgeous Artwork, Crappy Storytelling.......2006-05-05
Honestly, it takes more than pretty pictures to make a good manga. I really enjoyed the original "Read or Die" OVA but I've never seen the TV series. I saw this manga at the bookstore and thought I'd give it a try. Boy, I won't make that mistake again! The action is very choppy and the dialogue is so disjointed, it's difficult at times to figure out what is going on. Maybe if I'd seen the TV series, the book would make more sense, but as it is, there's a lot of vital information missing, which leaves the reader flipping pages and wondering "what just happened?" This is a common problem for amateur cartoonists who have a clear picture of the action in their minds but lack the storytelling finesse to actually pace out the panels so the story makes sense to someone who DOESN'T already know it. I would never expect such narrative ineptness from a "professional" manga artist.
Besides the sloppy pacing, the story here is ... well ... just plain STUPID. Seriously, it was dumb. I expected better from something set in the "Read or Die" universe.
All that aside, the artwork is really gorgeous. Shutaro Yamada's drawing style is easy to look at, particularly the sexy cheesecake (or should I say "fanservice") shots of the cute girl characters. A lot of this seemed gratuitous - I don't want to give anything away, but there's a scene with some costume changes which seem to be there just for the sake of drawing the character in a variety of skimpy cosplay outfits. There's certainly no justifiable PLOT reason for it, and sadly even that bit of titillation is not enough to compel me to keep this book. It's going up for sale, used.
Hooray R.O.D.......2006-04-14
Unlike the two reviewers below me, i enjoyed this a lot. It is a completely different part of the story. And that is why its good. The original anime one was about yomiko, the rod the tv, was about the paper sisters and nenene. This book introduces Nenene and Yomiko before the original. This is a buy, it is great.
completely different.......2006-03-28
The storyline in the manga pre-dates the orginal anime release and the television production. It involves a few of the character in the original but only a couple. The manga leaves the orginal fan base and delves into new territoy, leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The character designs head for the 18+ and male only crowd while the plot line drops down into the 10+ age group. Sadly, I won't be buying the rest of the series.
Book Description
Life's big questions seem to take care of themselvesit's the little things that cause the most trouble. Guy Browning shares his hilarious advice for facing a million and one small challenges in this gem that was a runaway bestseller in Britain.
Readers of the UK's Guardian magazine already know and love Guy Browning as the author of a droll weekly column. In Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade, Browning introduces his laugh-out-loud rules for living to an American audience. He interprets life's smaller truths and tackles everyday matters with a keen eye and a distinctive, sardonic wit. His tongue-in-cheek advice spans a wide range of topics: Sickness and Health, Cooking and Eating, Fashion and Grooming, Sleeping and Waking, Love and Marriage, and more, encompassing:
How to evaluate a bottle of wine (if the alcohol content is less than 15%, send it straight back)
How to get what you want at the barber's (no multipart instructions, please)
How to pretend to laugh at a friend's joke (the closest most men get to faking orgasm)
In Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade, Browning gives the essential rules for living life with a sense of humor. BACKCOVER:
Praise for Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade
A collection of daily drolleries . . . Full of short takes with a great deal of no-nonsense (well, maybe a little nonsense) charm.
Publishers Weekly
This laugh-out-loud little essay collection serves up offbeat assistance. . . . Browning's sophisticated humor makes this a winner.
Library Journal, starred review
Brilliant. . . . . Everyday matters are skewered with deadpan style and deadly accuracy.

A must have for anyone who has lived life........2007-01-13
I'll make this short. If you have lived, can think, and have a sense of humor buy this. (Must understand sarcasm to understand book) ;)
An Amazingly Humorous Book.......2006-05-19
I think that this was a hilarious book. I would suggest it to anyone with any sense of humor- sarcastic or literal! I found this book to be extremely helpful with the basic things in life- such as how to use a knife and fork, how to die, how to swim (2nd best in the book!), or how to do extreme sports (Definitely the funniest). Each topic was written with an amazing eye to the readability. This is a must read for the light hearted and happy person. Happy Reading!!
Audio Version-Laugh a minute, at the least.......2006-03-23
"How to laugh", "how to sit", "how to drink"...These CD's were about "how to" laugh at everything in life. This is a comical look at the small things in life. This was a delighfully entertaining book. I originally 'borrowed' it from my public library. I immediately purchased afterward.
This is not a serious 'how to' book. Obviously in a section on "how to sit" the author makes casual observances about these little things in life and how we do them with specific intent and we don't even know it. This is not intended to be a psychological analysis of everything we do, instead pokes fun at everything we do. While not a book on etiquette, Guy Browning seems to identify the 'do's' and don'ts' of eating, drinking, peeing, sitting, stratching, etc. based on subconscience thoughts we all have about ourselves, or what others might think about us. Maybe good thoughts. Maybe bad. All truly inciteful and humorous.
The tidbits are funny because for the most part they are true. I laughed out loud several times. The Audio CD version is 5.5 hrs. It was a delight to listen to one a day. It's too much for one sitting, but I looked forward to it each evening.
For those like me in the US, we also get an english vocabulary lesson, as many of the words I have never used myself, though I know what Guy Browning meant. The british accent is extremely easy to understand.
Audio Version (CD)- British actor Simon Vance read the book impecably and is a comedian in his own right.
Silly humor mixed with a little dry humor though all of it very easy to understand. I will try some more from this author.
Hilarious!! Try it!!.......2005-12-01
This is not really about how to survive life's small challenges, which may be why one other reviewer was so disappointed. Instead, it's about HOW TO MAKE YOU LAUGH! It's hilarious. If you like Dave Barry, you'll love this, too. Almost every single sentence is packed with funniness. That's why the chapters are so short--every sentence counts. Guy Browning is a very witty fellow, but also very down-to-earth. This would be a great Christmas/Birthday present for any literate guy with a sense of humor.
Sounded cute... but truly is not.......2005-11-26
This book consists of chapters with smaller sections within - 1 to 3 page blurbs... it is just a collection of random thoughts on the obvious and regurgitated with a supposed whimsical view - not funny and quite painful to read - unfortunately this was the book i grabbed for a long train ride - big mistake.

Perfect for non professional and beginners.......2007-08-23
This is the perfect book for someone who needs the basics of audio techniques. It's easy and quick to read. Higly raccommended if you need to understand the basics. If you are already on an advanced level this one will be no such useful instead.
Good For The Road!!!!!!.......2007-03-16
I have purchased and review several of these "Basic Series" books and I have been pleased with all of them. Paul White authored the majority of them and did a fine job. You can buy them individually or they come in a set of four. This book is great for its intended purpose, a handbook to carry around with you to live gigs. This book is small (6 inches x 4 inches) and relatively inexpensive. Therfore you can throw this book in your gig back and not be worried about it to much. Now this book is not going to be the most comprehensive on the subject, but it is good for answering the quick question before a live gig. What I like most about this book is that it has an appendix at the end that show you every possible type of cable connection and the proper name for it. It also has a fairly in-depth glossary.

Sound Check: The Basics of Sound and Sound Systems
ASIN: 0634030280 |
Book Description
This beginner's guide to the basics of live concert sound mixing and mic techniques is written by industry vet Jerry Slone, whose baptism-by-fire road experiences will teach you need-to-know stuff they simply don't teach in school! It provides easy-to-understand coverage aimed at the novice on topics such as: sound and hearing; microphone models, specs and techniques; mixers; equalization; amplifiers; speakers; the audio chain; schools and universities for continuing education; and much more. Ever since talent show appearances in his pre-teen years, Jerry Slone's been the guy who got stuck hooking up the PA and trying to tweak it to make it sound better. After graduating from the Recording Industry program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), he road-managed and mixed house audio for a touring band. Today, he works with acts signed to major labels.
Customer Reviews:
Not much there........2004-08-30
This book is a waste of time. What a disappointment. I've been doing live sound for years, and am interested in tips on how to improve. The advice in this book is so basic and general as to be useless. Talk to others, Slone recommends. Duh. There are a couple tips on mic placement worth thinking about (how to mic a guitar amp to get various tonal qualities). Not much else for anyone with any experience at all.
Could this be targeted for the rank beginner? If so, it fails there as well. One might expect that this book would run through the basics of how to hook up a sound system. What cable plugs in where? But it doesn't. If you're a beginner, you're just as clueless after reading this as if you'd never picked it up. Heck, you might even be more confused.
No desctiptions of what all those gadgets in the rack are and how to use them.
I feel bad about being so negative, and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings - but this book is quite worthless.

Book Description
More than a decade ago, Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton introduced the Balanced Scorecard, a revolutionary performance measurement system that allowed organizations to quantify intangible assets such as people, information, and customer relationships. Then, in The Strategy-Focused Organization, Kaplan and Norton showed how organizations achieved breakthrough performance with a management system that put the Balanced Scorecard into action.
Now, using their ongoing research with hundreds of Balanced Scorecard adopters across the globe, the authors have created a powerful new tool-the "strategy map"-that enables companies to describe the links between intangible assets and value creation with a clarity and precision never before possible.
Kaplan and Norton argue that the most critical aspect of strategy-implementing it in a way that ensures sustained value creation-depends on managing four key internal processes: operations, customer relationships, innovation, and regulatory and social processes. The authors show how companies can use strategy maps to link those processes to desired outcomes; evaluate, measure, and improve the processes most critical to success; and target investments in human, informational, and organizational capital.
Providing a visual epiphany for executives everywhere who can't figure out why their strategy isn't working, Strategy Maps is a blueprint any organization can follow to align processes, people, and information technology for superior performance.

Why you need a value proposition.......2006-07-22
While this book is very thorough, with some work it's possible to glean some very important approaches to how to manage work. I have used it to develop value propositions in teams and help shape the focus of an organization. It's worth spending time with if you struggle with priorities and focus.

Practical Strategy Implementation Book by Jameson Thottam.......2005-09-14
An excellent book for those who wish to develop roadmaps on Strategy and filled with insider trading tips on how to implement strategy throughout the life cycle of an organization.
As a past VP of Strategic Planning with various firms (e.g., Homestore, IndyMac Bank and MedChannel), I have applied these techniques along with various data analysis software applications (e.g., Crystal Ball, @Risk, SEC Stat II & SEC STAT III)....
The programs/ideas proscribed in this book are both practical and valuable to any strategy professional.
Hope this was helpful,
Jameson Thottam

Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-06-17
If this book were a Hollywood film, it might be titled "Son of Balanced Scorecard" or even "Balanced Scorecard III." This book, however, is no mere spin-off or sequel. In two prior works, "The Balanced Scorecard" (which you may wish to read before reading this book) and "The Strategy-Focused Organization", authors Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton introduced the powerful concept of measuring the elusive intangibles that affect organizations. This information-dense book was born when the authors observed that CEOs instinctively draw arrows to explain their goals. This led to a breakthrough realization: "Objectives should be linked in cause-and-effect relationships." The graphic display of these relationships is a "strategy map." This book breaks new ground by providing a template so executives can be sure that their strategic planning omits nothing. It expands the concepts of "strategic themes" and "value-creating processes," and explains a system for aligning your organization's strategy with its intangible assets. However, the real-world examples may be lost on CEOs who are unfamiliar with MBA-style case studies. If you're implementing a "Balanced Scorecard" initiative or planning your firm's future, we say this is a blockbuster you don't want to miss.
Nice acorn, can't wait for the oak tree........2005-06-15
Where do you start with reviewing a book like this. It is jam-packed with good, even great ideas. Not necessarily original ideas, but, a lot of the hard work is in bringing together old ideas into new configurations.
It is probably worthwhile noting a few things the book is not. The very fact that I write these things using a negative style is, in a perverse way, an admission of how good I find this book and why I give it 5 stars. I'm usually never a literalist when it comes to management / business texts, I usually, hopefully, look for the interesting ideas at the heart of a book. Otherwise, like other reviewers, I'd probably give it one star.
It's not a finished product. It's one step in a long journey to discover a system which properly links strategy with performance measurement, which may go another 10 or 20 years (and probably more). You can see the evolution of ideas from Kaplan and Norton's first book on Balanced Scorecard to this effort some ten years later. Some of the concepts have changed notably. Don't be deceived by the subtle differences. Those subtle differences have not so subtle impacts. Indeed, if you want to be confused, read all three of their books. I'd recommend focusing on Strategy Maps and only dabble in the earlier two for key areas which are not covered by Strategy Maps.
It's not consistent. Maybe its a function of multiple authors. Maybe Kaplan and Norton's researchers have their own ideas, but don't be the least surprised if one part of the book contradicts another part - indeed, sometimes within a single page!! But, this is only a sign of the evolution that the whole BSC concept is going through. Hopefully, one day, it will move from popular to rigorous - again, many years down the track.
It's frustrating. Especially when, after reading a few pages, you are drawn to a strategy map example which you have to work quite hard at trying to match what was just written to what you are seeing in the strategy map. I think, however, that this is probably, once you think about it, a strength of the book - it shows a raw unedited strategy map from which a concept has been extracted rather than merely showing a contrived strategy map which, of course, precisely matches the words in the text.
Indeed, of all the strategy map examples in the book, I don't think I found one which is actually consistent with all the text, or follows the so-called Kaplan and Norton method precisely - that's the method K&N promote on their courses: the one that "explains" those organisations which have "failed" despite the use of BSC methods, i.e., pure spin.
It makes some amusingly optimistic and difficult to believe claims. If only they could get rid of the spin and self promotion. I like the bit about the BSC framework revolving around strategy as defined by Michael Porter (with its focus on differentiation) and then making the claim that it can be applied to any strategy representation. I also like the claim that the BSC deals with lead indicators, lag indicators and feedback loops. Feedback loops! You have got to be kidding!! Unless you are running simulations, none of these frameworks deal with feedback loops - except by introducing risk management objectives which simulate feedback loops if you really squint and turn your head sideways.
It is not integrative. From time to time the book hints at a bigger underlying system of which BSC is a part, but, unfortunately the BSC doesn't really talk about how the two relate - probably its most serious, but not unresolvable, weakness. It promotes a silo mentality: focus on BSC, forget the rest!! For example, it talks about strategic concepts in contrast to operational concepts without really getting to the heart of the differences and how one blends with the other. It talks about hundreds of underlying processes which run a business without talking about the relationship of them to the so-called critical strategic processes which populate strategy maps. It hints at a comprehensive, underlying measurment framework of which BSC is only a subset. If K&N want rigour, depth, comprehensiveness, this is where they need to go.
It is terminologically destitute. Goes with the consistency thing which is rampant in most managemetn and business texts. Either don't define, or define your words so loosely, that you guarantee confusion as the words invoke different concepts which at best overlap or, at worst, are mutually exclusive.
I'll stop here - I think I could probably match the length of the book itself if I continue. To summarise, I've said it in the title to this review: an acorn has been planted. It's been growing for 10 odd years, but, it's got a way to go. Can't wait to see that mighty and beautiful oak tree at its biggest and best.
I'll even line up for K&N's next book(s)!!
