So, you began to hate Sinister after reading X-men..........2005-12-21
...but this book explains how Sinister became what he is , and describes a Frankensteinish scientist who crossed the line out of care for his family. Apocalypse also appears, and Jean and Scott too.
The art suits story perfectly, and although this book is not better than Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, in my opinion, it is something completely different and well-written. The level of the script is Gaiman-ish.
Mr. Sinister's origin.......2005-06-11
The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix takes place in 1859 and retells the origin of Mister Sinister. He begins the tale as Nathaniel Essex, brilliant but misunderstood scientist who, in the age of creationism believes in evolution. Even Darwin thinks Essex insane. Driven by the death of the deformed son he was unable to save, and fear for the unborn child his wife is carrying he is soon pushing past morality into monstrosity.
When a band of thugs Essex employs, named Marauders, set out to collect mutants they accidentally awaken Apocalypse. That's when Apocalypse begins the task of turning Essex into Sinister.
The dialogue is solid, the art is dark, heavy, and moody, which is perfect for the feeling of the book.
The bad news is the inclusion of Cyclops and Phoenix. Transported to the past by Sanctity, their presence feels forces, and could be excluded entirely. It feels like they were only added to boost sales.
The good and bad balance here to make this a readable, but not spectacular book. I recommend it for X-Men fans, but I do not recommend it for new comic book readers due to the messy continuity.
A tragic tale of how Mister Sinister came to be.......2001-07-16
This is the tragic story about the origin of Sinister. Scott Summers and Jean Grey are brought back to the Victorian age. It was when Sinister was still known as Nathaniel Essex: A brilliant scientist, who was way too obsessed with reaching his goal: Creating the perfect species. He even puts his neglected wife aside in the name of science.
Other scientists slam his ideas and he only meets failure when trying to pursue his goal. But then he meets En Sabah Nur, also known as the evil mutant Apocalypse - Who tells him there is a way for him to do it. All Nathaniel has to do is choose between that or the love of his caring wife.
This is a very good story about love, the difficult choice this man had to make and how he came to the decision he eventually made. After years and years of hating Mister Sinister for everything he's done to the X-Men... You find that he's had a heart once. And I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for the guy. They did Sinister good with this story. The writing is great. The thoughts, emotions and distant relationship between Nathaniel Essex and his wife Rebecca are done marvellously. The events can be shocking at times (don't ever browse through a comic book quickly!!!)
The art is very dark and contains alot of shadows - which works very well for this setting and story. It sets the mood for the story just right. Some might take a while to get used to the style, but that happens pretty quick once you get deep into the book.
If you've loved the love story of "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm", I'd recommend this. I would probably be sorry for saying this, but... It made me shed a tear :o)
Excellent 4 part series all wrapped into one........2000-08-17
Overall this is a good story, interesting plot.. and of course features the coolest enemy of them all (IMHO) Apocalypse! Seems he's at the root of just about everything in the x-universe these days eh?
Excellent artwork and a great read. I highly recommend it to the Apocalypse fan

A vicarious return to childhood.......2007-08-18
What can be said about Calvin & Hobbes that hasn't already been shouted to the heavens by legions of prematurely grown-up fans ?
Calvin is the eternal Child/Id within us all, and Hobbes is his stuffed tiger / best friend / faithful companion in arms come-to-life ... and together they swashbuckle their way through a childhood world populated with drooling monsters of the imagination, screaming ray-guns, carboard boxes turned magical transmogrifiers, and giant tut-tutting adults who are forever dragging us back from our revels by the ear, in order to make us wipe our feet, bathe, eat, do our homework, and go to bed on time.
By laughing at Calvin & Hobbes, we get to vicariously relive some of our own carefree childhoods exploits ... exploits which echo in our adult lives, because (looks both ways) we never actually grew up. Only our bodies did.
Highly recommended.

Calvin is in alliance with Hobbes to combat the monsters that lurk in his imagination. The victims of this battle? Usually, Calvin's hapless parents. This collection is among the funniest as it centers on the darker side of Calvin's runaway train of imagination: monsters, space creatures, icky girls, and nefarious snowmen. Pick it up, or the monsters in the closet will come out as well.

Well, I must admit I have had this book since I was in 8th grade when my best friend at the time gave it to me. I still crack up when I'm going through the pages upon pages of strange situations that Calvin and his stuffed friend find themselves in. Definately a must for any C&H fan and really funny. Buy it.

The 1st Calvin and hobbes book I ever owned, and one of the most treasured. Many people try to argue as to which is THE BEST Calvin and Hobbes collection, and although some like the 10th Anniversary Book are a must-have for any C&H fan, Frankly they ALL ARE THE BEST. All the collections rate as 100% satisfaction, and ANY book will provide great humor and entertainment. You can Never get tired or board of reading such books, EVER!
As regards the book, in general, it describes the various escapades and adventures of a 6 year old Hyperactive Calvin and his stuffed pet' tiger, Hobbes, who comes to life in Calvin's eyes and noone else's.
I DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a great laugh. This definitely rates as an all-time classic, and I wish i was able to give it more then a mere 5 STARS!!!

One of The Best Books In The Series.......2003-06-19
This book is actually one of the best book in the Calvin and Hobbes series. Since tis one praticullar book is not a treasury colection, the comics in this book are basically "new." The comics in this book are really funny and most of them have good points to them. Basically what I'm saing is that this book is great.
A refreshing read...A refresher to all adults..........2002-10-01
I haven't heard about this collection until my friend accidentally left hers in my house. Anticipating a lousy cartoon strip compilation, I was pleasantly surprised that it was very interesting & hilarious. As an adult, it gave me an overview of how a child's mind works. I have forgotten how imaginative & creative a child could be & realized how repressive I have been acting towards my daughter, just like Calvin's parents.
We all have been like Calvin in our earlier lives. We had a Hobbes as a best friend, a Susie whom we loved to annoy but loved as well, a transmogrifier & a babysitter who scared the hell out of us. We daydreamed in class, we played 'pretend' & lived life to the fullest.
It is so refreshing to witness such naivity once again. & though adult lives have robbed us of our youthful innocence, Calvin & Hobbes takes us back to those pure, clean fun days in a child's life.
Oh Watterson, my Watterson.......2002-08-11
It is my feeling that Bill Watterson had enough integrity and ethics to prevent the syndicate from cranking out endless meaninglessly repetitive compilations. Of course, he did quit partly because he was becoming disgusted with many of the commercial aspects of his work. With most comics, even good ones, the collections get stale after a few. Watterson's collections dont. There are a dozen or so C&H compilations/collections, but you wont be dissapointed with owning the whole shebang, especially since Watterson frequently did a lot of extra work to ensure that each collection had something new to offer. Even without this extra stuff, Watterson's body of work is extensive enought to warrant owning all these collections. He was steadily cranking out great material for a decade or so, and if you are like me you will be reading some C&H weekly for as long as you are on this earth, so tons of books is not a bad thing. Basically, I wholeheartedly reccomend all the books. If you like one you will like them all. They only get better as you get to know the characters. Watterson never goes for the cheap laugh by having any of the comic's principals act out of character. As you progress through the years with C&H, and I do reccomend reading them in order, you will see how art progresses and grows when the artist is committed to excellent work. So, go get the first one, titled simply Calvin & Hobbes, and then start down the enjoyable road to making Calvin and his tiger a pleasant little chunk of your life.
CALVIN AND HOBBES RULE!.......2001-07-18
Calvin and Hobbes are the funniest comic strips ever created. Although Watterson has retired and does not write them anymore, it's still great to have the collections.
"Something Under the Bed is Drooling" is a collection of earlier Calvin and Hobbes stips. The old ones are the best, I think. Every page is guarenteed to make you laugh. The book is hillarious, and is fun to watch Calvin in action as he takes on his grumpy teacher, monsters, the deranged babysitter, the girl from next store, and of course, his aggravated parents. One of the funniest strips in the book is when Calvin is writing on a sheet of paper and Hobbes asks him what he is doing. Calvin tells him that he is writing his autobiography. Hobbes is confused and tells him that he's only six. Calvin simply answers, "I only have one sheet of paper."
With great comics like Calvin and Hobbes, no one is too old to enjoy them. I say buy them all while you still can. They're great to read over and over again.
Calvin's Tiger strikes back..........2000-01-04
In my opinion, Bill Waterson is the greatest cartoonist I've seen. This was my very first C & H book and I thoroughly enjoyed it: one of the best. Unfortunately, Mr. Waterson has retired from cartooning, and Calvin & Hobbes is no more - one of the saddest tragedies of the century. In this book and many others, he could magically bring the cartoon to life, as only few others could do (Jim Henderson and Charles Schulz among them). Definitely worthwhile, gives a whole lot of laughs and perhaps a new view of life. I will always love Calvin and Hobbes as great cartoon characters and admire Bill Waterson for his talent.
Five stars, easy.

I love this book!When my friend got a Calvin and Hobbes book, I did'nt really like it because it was not in color. But once I got this book I loved it! I colored in the ilistrations so now I don't have ANY problems with this book! I want to collect all of the Calvin and Hobbes books, but right now I only have 4. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes funny books. They are so good my dad reads them! Other good Calvin and Hobbes books are Revenge of the Baby-Sat,Scientific Progress Goes Boink, and Attack of the Deranged Muntant Killer Monster Snow Goons. Well, I guess that's it. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

Better Deal.......2006-10-17
This is the second of three little books, published in the UK, that contain the exact material of the very first Calvin and Hobbes book. I bought this book thinking it had something new in it, but I didn't realize it contained the same material as a book I already had.
It's probably a better investment just to go ahead and buy the first Calvin and Hobbes book (titled Calvin and Hobbes). Everybody loves C&H; who doesn't know a little boy somewhere "just like Calvin"?
Best Comic Book Ever.......2005-10-23
This is the best comic book series! I have read the books so many times that I have memorized 1 third of them. You came find these amazing books in almost every bookstore.

The colouring book was a hit. The lesbian at work loved it. I accompanied the gift with a pink colouring pen to finish the gift off nicely. I just don't know how I can out do it next year.

This is a coloring book with full-page drawings of women's labia. Of course the artistry is suberb.
The binding and paper are far superior to what you expect with the name 'coloring book'. I was very pleasantly surprised at the print quality.

'In 1973 I set out to do drawings of women's genitals for use in sex education groups. I wanted the drawings to be lovely and informative, to give pleasure and affirmation. I organized the drawings into a coloring book because a major way we learn to understand the world, as children, is by coloring. I admire the spirit behind this book. However, many of the genitals in this book don't look like genitals at all, but more like abstract ... things. I would appreciate some accuracy in a book like this, because it is meant to be educational. Corinne should have left the Picasso images to Picasso.

This book is a celebration of feminine individuality, power and creativity. To akoral52@hotmail.com, I suggest you stick to books that you can handle, and don't worry about what the rest of the world thinks. Just because something may not be suitable for you, does not make it bad and/or wrong. If you are worried about your children having access to things you do not wish them to see, there are many programs that you can download to excercise control over what they see on the internet. After all, it is up to YOU to decide what your kids have access to, and you cannot reasonably expect everyone else on the internet to adhere to your ideals.

Book Description
This is the companion book to The Yes Men, a United Artists movie coming late summer 2004. It follows two anti-corporate activist-pranksters as they impersonate the World Trade Organization on TV and at business conferences around the world.
The story begins with Andy and Mike setting up a website that looks just like that of the World Trade Organization. Some visitors don't notice the site is a fake, and send e-mail invitations meant for the real WTO. Mike and Andy play along with the ruse and soon find themselves attending important functions as WTO -representatives.
Delighted to speak as the organization they oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock their unwitting audiences with darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don't notice the joke and seem to agree with every terrible idea the two can come up with.
Exhausted by their failed attempts to shock, Mike and Andy change their strategy completely, and take a whole new approach for one final lecture.
The book is lavishly illustrated in full color throughout, featuring photographs of Mike and Andy getting deeper and deeper into their assumed identities. Also liberally dispensed are many of the hilarious e-mail exchanges between the Yes Men and various officials and individuals around the world who have asked their advice on issues of world trade.
The Yes Men are global authorities on "Identity Correction," the art of impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Their high-profile targets have included George Bush, who responded to their imposture by saying "there ought to be limits to freedom" and The World Trade Organization, who called them "deplorable." The Yes Men currently have thousands of job openings.

Top Notch PRANKSTERS like us.......2005-04-21
Change the world, OK? Why not impersonate the leaders, infiltrate their organization, expose them for what they really are and then shut them down and all from within. If you're going to do it, do it with humor, that's what these guys did. This book is Great, changes a persons ideas of what a few people are really capable of doing in the world. These guys helped the world and had fun doing it. We need more freedom fighters of their caliber. I highly recommend reading this book and loan it to your friends and start thinking creatively. If you love this book and want more I recommend you check out The Yes Men the Movie and I also recommend the book Re/Search #11: Pranks by V. Go see the movie!.......2004-10-24
The Yes Men are a small group of pranksters/anti-World Trade Organization activists bent on disrupting global free trade in some of the most unusual manners. Some of their past stunts included altering some GI Joe and Barbie dolls and switching their voices, and creating a website that was very similiar to then Governor George W. Bush around the time he decided to run for president. I loved Bush's response that there should be limits freedom. Of course the WTO wasn't none too pleased with The Yes Men. This book is a companion piece to the brilliant film I just saw. It highlights the effort that Andy and Mike put into infiltrating various global free trade forums. You would be amazed by the amount of time and work they actually invested because it took them months especially for the textile conference in Finland which was extremely funnier than heck. I had never laughed as hard as I did when Andy unleashed that phallus to an unsuspecting audience. What was even funnier was the idea for McDonald's to literally recycle the food waste into food for starving third world countries. When Andy and Mike presented that idea to a college class, the reaction was priceless. Michael Moore makes a cameo appearance in this film like he did in "The Corporation". As funny as that guy is, what he said was nothing new. I think his footage could have been left off or expanded more on the evils of free trade. Yes The Yes Men are immature the results of their pranks are hilarious but with a serious message. A definitely must see movie and read book.

I HAD TO RETURN IT!.......2006-11-17
I was so excited to get this book. Imagine a book that combines all of the GURPS time travel books and information from 3Ed. Everything looks beautiful down to the hard back spine and cool new look and layout. When it arrived from Amazon I cracked it open and started to read. When I got to the section on explanations for time travel my heart sank. Could the idiot writers not come up with anything more original than a demon abusing you in the most fowl way in order to time travel? Steve Jackson should be ashamed. I love roleplaying books but not that much. I still have some values I'd like to live up to. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I'm glad Amazon let me return mine. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

But the scale only goes up to 5 stars!
I bought this book because it is advertised as the new "official" setting for GURPS fourth edition. The first thing I need to do is dispel that myth. This book contains that information but it contains so much more that you have troubles believing that the authors managed to cram so much information between the two covers without it exploding.
This isn't really a "background" book that describes a single well thought out campaign, it is more of a "background generator" book that provides the basis of literally thousands of possible campaigns. The scope of this book is so gigantic that I have troubles believing that the authors managed to finish this project anywhere near on time.
Want cross-time adventuring? It's in there. Want alternate histories? Boy is it EVER in there! Want Time Travel adventures? Yep, it's there too. Don't want to have to worry about blowing up the space-time continuum? There's suggestions on how to suspend disbelief without damaging gameplay.
Say you want to create your own alternate history but don't want to deal with all the icky stuff of guns vs. swords. There's a very detailed chapter that assists you in filling out your vision before your players go mucking around and spoil things by emphasizing the one thing you didn't think of.
My head was spinning by the time I was 90% of the way through the book. There was too much to grasp. The scale of the author's efforts had caused my brain to go into meltdown and I couldn't figure out whether I wanted to:
1) Run screaming from the room (did I mention that there's lots of Cthulu-oriented stuff in here as well?)
2) Ignore the book for a year or so until I could clear my head enough to think logically
3) Introduce my players to a tiny spoonful of this fascinating universe (my head ached from the thought of even trying to work out all of the causality-related issues)
Then I hit Chapter 7 (Infinite Campaigns) and the authors addressed all of my concerns and self-doubts in a few clever paragraphs. They pointed out that the big thing that the GM needs to do first is figure out what he and the players want to do. This needs to be in alignment or the game won't work (trying to force a locked-room Agatha Christie mystery down the throats of a bunch of combat-oriented gamers is a recipe for disapointment for everybody). Once you've got that down, determining which rules to follow becomes much more obvious. My sole complaint is that the authors didn't introduce this concept much sooner in the book.
I haven't checked the index yet but I suspect that it isn't that good compared to the normal GURPS standard simply because it is 2 pages long and this book should have at least a 20 page index.
The artwork is up to the usual very high standard for GURPS 4th edition and the authors have included a small selection of example stories that help you envision the possibilities (my favorite is about a group of Roman Legionaires who are attacking Rommel's tanks in the desert. You think the struggle would be uneven until you realize that all of the Legionaires have genetic modifications). I wish there were more stories, those stories made a huge difference in my appreciation of GURPS Magic but there's so much here already I can easily understand why the authors made the decision they did.
This book will help a GM enhance just about any campaign you can think of; fantasy, modern, science fiction, supers, horror, etc.
In short, buy this book!

The name says alot about the book. I like it quite a bit because it does have answers to questions which any new supervisor would be wondering about. It's simple, and easy to understand.

An excellent reference book for the front line supervisor. I am an HR Director, and when I get calls from managment or supervisors on how to handle a personnel problem, it is the first book I refer to. I haved used this book since 1990 when I was in supervision and have bought over 100 for other supervisors. Excellent tool.

As an internal managment development consultant, I found the book useful for enhancing one-on-one and group training for new supervisors and managers. The book is in a Q&A format. It addresses people related problems with proven solutions that supervisors typically face on the job. The skills that one can develop from reading the book will help foster improved effectiveness.
