Mysterious Forties.......2005-04-13
I loved this collection of paper dolls, and think that the selection of actresses is representative of the decade (although Betty Grable was a glaring omission). Stars like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn had careers that spanned greater periods (so they should be honored by books of their own), whereas most of those featured were more typical of the era. This is especially true of Maria Montez who specialized in the fantasy film genre that was popular during World War II, and Veronica Lake, whose hairstyle was as influential at the time as Princess Diana's was in the eighties.
The portrayals of Hedy Lamarr and Dorothy Lamour were wonderful, but I feel that the quality of illustration for some of the costumes was not of the same standard.
Good over all.......2001-10-13
A nice continuation in the series.Rita Hayworth, Dorothy Lamour, and Gene Tierney are the highlights.Maria Montez did not belong here, Bette Davis should have replaced her.Where is Davis in this series? She was the top 40's Actress.
Glamour!.......2001-06-13
I loved this set of paper dolls & was very pleased with the dolls that were in the book - however: I think that Betty Grable should have been included. She was the most opular pin-up star in the 1940s and I think that she should have been in this set. I hope that Mr. Tierney will do a complete book on her, or as the last reviewer suggested, maybe he could do a second set of the 1940s & include Betty Grable.
Nice, but not as good as Tierney's others.......2000-01-06
As a fan of Tierney's paper dolls and of '40s movies, I was disappointed by this book. The artwork is beautiful, as always, but some of the likenesses (Gene Tierney and Veronica Lake) were poor, and in the case of one Gene Tierney costume from _Laura_ Tierney gave her both a hairstyle and dress she never wore in the film! I also didn't care for the emphasis on costumes from _Ziegfeld Girl_, and I found some of the selections disappointing: for example, why include more obscure actresses instead of classic stars like Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, Katharine Hepburn, and Merle Oberon? I only hope Tierney comes up with a sequel to this book.

I never got this item..........2006-01-15
I ordered it as a Christmas gift, but it became back ordered a few weeks after I placed my order. I'm sure it's quite good though.
Funny Stuff.......2004-12-19
This is basically a disorganized mini version of one of those episode guides...only it focuses strictly on Homer. If your a hardcore Simpsons fan, then you'll love this book. If not, then I'm sure it will nonetheless crack a smile from you.
Perfect holiday gift for the Simpsons fan in your life!.......2004-11-16
This slim little volume features everything you'd ever want to know about one of your favorite Simpsons characters, Homer. The book opens with a timeline reviewing all the significant milestones in Homer's life, from his childhood antics with friend Barney to many of the family trials which have been chronicled on the show. The various "Homer's Haunts" sections describe in detail some of Homer's most-visited sites, including the nuclear power plant and (of course) Mo's. Also featured are significant people in Homer's life, from his workplace friends and enemies to the people who have almost ruined his marriage (eg, Jacques, Mindy). You'll also get a review of his many, many jobs as well as countless food-related references (including "Things That Sound Like Food but Aren't"). Finally, the book begins and ends with Homer's Top 40 and his Bottom 40, respectively. A great stocking stuffer for any die-hard Simpsons fan!

Book Description
The Homer Book is now being released in hardback, as part of the ongoing series: The Simpsons Library of Wisdom.
Homer Simpson is a man's man, an 'Average Joe', a loving father and husband, and a devoted beer drinker. But do you know the 'real' Homer? Find out what's on Homer's mind, discover the mysteries of Homer's fridge, hang out in Homer's haunts; meet his friends and enemies; and spend a typical day with the lovable lout who will lift you out of your
D'oh–ldrums.
In The Simpsons Library of Wisdom, Matt Groening, the creator of 'The Simpsons', offers an ongoing series of portable and quotable books that will eliminate the need for all religions and philosophies, exalt man's role in the universe and make the world a better place ... sort of. No other television show in history has commented so freely and so humorously on modern times, and there seems to be no end in sight for the sharp satire and pointed parody that 'The Simpsons' serves up every night of the week all around the world.

Homer = Adorable.......2006-12-10
This book is fun, entertaining, and very colorful. I'd recommend it to anyone- those with a passing interest, to die-hard fans like myself. Very informative, but most of all it's funny.
Book Description
"The Hopewell Journey: 350 Years from Immigrant Religion to Hoosier Faith; Hopewell Presbyterian Church 1831-2006" is the story of devout European Christians who sailed from The Netherlands for the New World in 1651 in search of freedom - mainly freedom in the way they worshiped God. That group of Lowlands Dutch, French Huguenots and English settlers reached Nieu Amsterdam (New York). Before long, they swore allegiance to their new country but struggled to preserve their Dutch language, way of life and worship. When their closely-knit group of descendants began feeling hemmed in, families moved en mass in the early 1700s to New Jersey and, a few years later, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, developing the Conestoga wagon. In the late 1770s, families again packed up, loaded their wagons and traversed valleys in the Appalachian Mountains into Kentucky where they settled 5,945 acres sold to them in 1786 by Daniel Boone's brother, Squire, ancestor of two Hopewell Church members. Their final move began in 1823 when Simon Covert discovered Hopewell's Big Spring, ending an almost 300-year saga with a permanent settlement west of Franklin, Indiana. This book also celebrates the farming community encircling Hopewell Presbyterian Church, founded May 23, 1831. Fourteen families, descendants of those founders still worship at the church, live here and farm or work elsewhere. Once established in a Johnson County area comparable in size to that in Kentucky, the settlers never again moved as a group. Only a few continued west - to establish churches, serve as ministers (almost 20), as missionaries (three) and to seek gold. Historians look at the Hopewell settlement and its accomplishments as the one most like the immigrants' vision of what their community could and should be. Indiana pioneers overcame severe hardships in a tangled wilderness; prospered and their children built notable houses, five of which enclose original log dwellings. Their descendants engaged in innovative farm practices; some were inventors. Illustrated stories of and by those people, their homes, their lives and Hopewell events continue the immigrants' "journey" to the present. Everyone's story is different and interesting.
Book Description
Sandra Tsing Loh, a self-described neurotic, nonachieving, downwardly mobile “Dumpy,” has started to come out of denial over the fact that she does not live in Provence. Not only does she not live in Provence, she doesn’t even live in a nice part of Los Angeles. This upper-lower-middle-class suburb in the sun-swept grid of the San Fernando Valley, consistently ranked one of the worst places to live in America, whose night sky is flamed by a million fast-food neon signs and whose streets are chockablock with carnicerias, taquerias, and pupuserias, will, she’s pretty sure, never be Provence.
In
A Year in Van Nuys, we find Sandra, an obscure writer, blocked at page 100 of her Great American Novel — the one that, when finished, will bring her fame, fortune, and the requisite country house in Provence. She’s 35 and she has eyebags like Bert Lahr, a too-rich, too-thin sister who torments her about her lack of initiative, and a $300-an-hour Malibu therapist. She writes for a failing women’s website — Amelia.com — makes a disastrous appearance on CNN, entertains a network’s idea about making a sitcom of her life, especially her eyebags, and watches new and old acquaintances alike succeed wildly at various pursuits. And this is merely the tip of the iceberg of a year in Sandra’s life. Divided by season — The Winter of Our Discontent, Spring Without Bending Your Knees, Summer Where We Winter, and Fall of Our Dearest Expectations — Sandra’s narrative charts a hilarious course through the anti-Hollywood, a morbid inferno that none other than Robert Redford called a “furnace that could destroy any creative thought that managed to creep into your brain.”
The result of this journey? Not thinner thighs, smoother skin, or a kind of space-age Zen Buddhist acceptance. (Notwithstanding the fact that a wise [gay] man notes that even Madonna has an inner Van Nuys.) No, the true grail turns out to be, unbelievably enough, Maturity. Which coincides, sadly, with the official end of Youth. Which, after a brief mourning period, turns out to be an odd relief for Sandra. After all, when one is no longer burdened by Youth, or Promise, or Potential, or even worldly Interest, a writer finally finds . . . the rush is over. Sandra has all the time in the world. And on a sunny blue-sky morning, a story begins to occur to her — of a 35-year-old, with Bert Lahr eyebags, who was blocked in the course of a Great American Novel in a colorful, tattered little outpost called Van Nuys . . .
Customer Reviews:
Pretty amusing, depending.......2006-04-17
To be honest, there's so much stuff in this book, subjects all over the map, that I'm having trouble writing a review. Every subject hit me a little differently. I found myself getting extremely bored on one tale, and then immensely enjoying another. That I had trouble getting past the first 30 pages had no bearing on how much I enjoyed the middle 10, or indeed that story about the writing workshop, which came near the end and was one of the best. R.A. Salvatore said that you know you are really a writer only if you just can't stop, and Sandra Tsing Loh makes this point wonderfully.
One reason I read this book is because it was apparently about Van Nuys; however, that suburb of Los Angeles did not figure into the book nearly as much as I thought it would. The author devotes too much time and energy on Hollywood, which is a very different place from the San Fernando Valley (which Van Nuys is part of), so the title may be misleading.
You don't really need to know much about Los Angeles to understand this book, but a good knowledge of pop culture of the time helps. Recommended if you like those things and amusing streams of consciousness as well as the subjects of writing and aging.
Some hilarious moments, but I'm not sure about the overall message.......2005-08-16
Tsing Loh is a new talent in the essay genre, and she will appeal to anyone in their 20's or 30's who is post-college but still searching for themselves, while watching annoying overachievers from college become television anchors. Some readers find her a bit too whiny, but she really hit home with me, and I loved her way of examining the world. The book has some terrific hand-drawn illustrations and diagrams expressing Sandra's feelings (one winner is a pie chart comaring ideal time spent together by a married couple, actual time spent together by hetero couples, and actual time spent together by gay male couples).
The end of this book didn't sit well with me, because the message seemed to be to abandon your dreams, and it was depressing. The journey to the end definitely had its high points, though.
Tsing Loh has some other great books about living in LA, and anyone from the area will be able to identify with the places and events she talks about. Fans of Tsing Loh will love essayist Laurie Notaro, who writes about the same age and experiences, but definitely in a less whiny voice. Check out Notaro's The Idiot Girls' Action Adventure club.
Sandra Does Better on NPR.......2005-05-12
I've been told that it's important to "step outside your comfort zone" every once in a while, and that's exactly what I did by reading this book. The experience was, well, a little bit weird.
FULL DISCLOSURE: Sandra's female, I'm male. She's Asian-American, I'm your basic WASP-American mongrel. She's a product of life in metro LA, I'm a Midwesterner living in a small city. I don't particularly care for southern California and I'm sure she'd be bored to tears by Battle Creek, Michigan. And so forth.
For me, reading "A Year in Van Nuys" was like stumbling on a diary that someone accidently left at the airport. Sandra is spilling her guts throughout most of the book about her marriage, career problems, friends, therapist, money issues and somewhat desperate life in suburban LA. She mixes regular narrative text with e-mails, cartoon drawings, diagrams, photos, confessional essays and some other strange stuff to make it read like a confidential journal. I loved the use of "strike through" type to show earlier versions of her thought process.
Whether you like it or not, Sandra forces us to be voyeurs. That can be funny and also annoying. For example, her take on the role of religion in weddings is hilarious, as are her riffs on life as a freelance writer. On the other hand, her obsessions about eye bags and cosmetic surgery are just kind of boring. The last few pages of the book bring some sense of resolution to her free-floating self-loathing, but not enough to matter, in my opinion.
Ultimately, "A Year in Van Nuys" is a quick, silly, moderately entertaining read -- just right for that wait between flights. To find Sandra's REAL comedic talent, you'll have to listen to one of her commentaries on NPR.
Are you kidding me?.......2005-02-19
I am flabergasted that so many people liked this book. I had to force myself to keep turning the pages to get through this whinning drivel, and in the end I regretted not giving up sooner. Most of Sandra's problems appear to be entirely her own fault. She gets too drunk at a Fox party and screws up her sitcom deal. She gets a new editor at her online magazine who doesn't like her style. Welcome to the real world - none of this is special or interesting because it's Van Nuys and the entertainment industry, and not just some shmuck in a cubicle. And here's a shocker - in real life, Loh was fired from her cushy radio commentary job for cursing on the air, and has blamed everyone at the radio station for it. No one feels as sorry for her as she apparently feels for herself.
I like one reviewer's comparison to the comic strip Cathy - this was like having to listen to Cathy complain in complete chapters instead of a few frames. By the end of the book I not only wanted the $5 I paid for it at a used bookseller back, I wanted to personally find this woman and give her a good slap across the face.
Solidly Entertaining.......2004-12-09
This is a good - not great - book that generally entertains, but goes too far in an effort to keep the reader amused and interested. The author writes at a higher intelligence level than your typical best selling author does. The downside is that she knows it, and it effects her work. More importantly, however, is the prevalence of eye bag references that nearly made me throw this book in the trash, something I have never done in my life. Six weeks after having finished the book, I sit here editing this review with one prevailing thought in my head, the less-than-enjoyable eye bag references.
The book is presumably about a year in the life of the author. While I don't know how much resonance there is between her real life and what we read on the pages, you can tell there is some. There are too many passionate outbursts for all of this to be fiction. After all, what writer doesn't reveal some of their soul in the words they create? This is what makes it so real and easy to read. As someone once said somewhere, write what you know. But then, what if you know nothing? I digress.
The author clearly knows more than nothing and for the most part, the contents of what she does know are enjoyable to read. Some of the events in the book are resonant with things I've experienced in my own life, despite the fact that I'm a man. I'll go ahead and say the eye bags are *not* one of those things. Still, the struggle to be an author and her ultimate decision in that endeavor are thoughts close to many I have had before. Her final decision, entirely contrary to the fact she authored a book, is something I've also come to adopt. Maybe it this freedom has led her to this work? Again, I digress.
It's a refreshing book, light yet intelligent to a point. It's a quick and enjoyable read. You could certainly do a lot worse. What's more, it has diagrams for those slow on the uptake. All in all, it's generally entertaining and contains real-life insights that can be applied to life and used to learn a little about yourself. Well worth the time spent reading it.

This is the audio book version of Sandra Tsing Loh's "A Year in Van Nuys" a collection of humorous essays by the award-winning writer, radio commentator, and solo performance artist.
Customer Reviews:
my favorite book on cd.......2006-02-23
Sandra is a one man band of voices, sound effects, pathos and humor in this cd. Her book is great too but her cd adds richness and texture to the words.
I laughed, then I laughed some more...........2002-08-03
Very funny, a disc worth hearing many times. Outrageous, probably true life excerpts told in excruciating detail. I believe the woman ate at least two thesauri. I had to play it several times because I missed stuff while I was laughing!

Customer Reviews:
I wish I'd read these reviews before buying this book!.......2006-08-04
I can only assume that since Seybold (joint publishers) are into seminars that this book is just the course notes from their Flash course. It may be OK with a teacher standing in front of you to explain the omissions, but on it's own it's frustrating and the best part of useless! I've battled my way 1/3 of the way through and given up and bought another book. This is the last Seybold book I will ever buy.
Ripped Off.......2006-01-22
This was bad. The fact that I paid 49 bucks made it even worst. As another reviewer said, if it was free it would have been overpriced.
It doesn't teach you anything. You bring up files from a project the author had done and he gives you half ass explainations of how he did it. Most of the time he has left out critical information that would have allowed you to recreate the file.
I did learn something about Flash, only because I went to many other sources to try to figure out what should have been spelled out by the author in this book.
Don't buy this book !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS.......2005-07-18
Being a complete novice, I figured this book would be a good way to get initiated into the world of Flash MX. Unfortunately, much like others who have reviewed the book, I found out the hard way that buying this book was certainly not the route to take. It is simply a step-by-step guide to making a silly flash project that doesn't even utilize Flash's more interesting tools. On top of this, it has glaring omissions and vague wording that make following the steps extremely frustrating and difficult. I would suggest to those just getting into Flash MX, trying "Flash MX 2004 Demystified" by Bucknell, Hogg, and Swann and by all means AVOID this book.
Don't waste your time or money.......2005-01-23
I've read some of William Sanders other books and thought they were decent works; so when I saw this book on sale for 50% off I grabbed it. After reading the first two chapters and then skimming the rest of the book (as well as looking at the samples on the CD) I can tell you that I'm totally disappointed. Frankly, if this book was free it would still be over priced. I say this because the book is virtually worthless from a learning point of view. And to make matters worse, as others have already pointed out, this book is full of errors and incorrect information. If you're new to Flash MX the errors and misinformation in this book alone are going to provide you with endless hours of frustration; not to mention a lot of wasted time and effort.
Do yourselves a big favor and avoid this book and skip quickly to any other option for learning Flash MX. You'll be glad you did!
Don't buy this book!!!.......2004-05-30
Don't bother with this book. All it will do is confuse you. I didn't learn a single thing after going through the first section. And the only reason I was able to find my way through it is because I have a basic understanding of Flash 5. This book won't teach you anything!!! I wish I read the reveiews before I bought the book. If I could give it no star at all, I would.

Customer Reviews:
Not very impressed........1998-04-13
I purchased this book for fun and unique ideas for a bridal shower, but I found the suggestions to be neither fun nor unique. I was particularly interested in the games section, but the book only gave 3 examples, which I thought were all very lame and juvenile. I think that my 16 year old brother could have come up with better ideas than this book did.

A path to follow.......2007-08-17
This is the best trading book I ever read. The technique showed by Mr. Elder to act automatic while the market are open and run fast instead of thinking is one of the best advice I ever heard. To be a sucessful trader you really need a defensive money management approach and a system to follow, it is much more important than simply identifying trends and bet right.
I rated this book 5 stars because I can't rate 6 or more. And yes I did some money with it. In fact this book already paid for itself...
I also reccomend Entries & Exits : Visits to 16 Trading Rooms (Wiley Trading) and The Complete Trading for a Living: The Legendary Approach to Trading with the Companion Study Guide from the same author.
Amazingly good and helpful !.......2007-06-16
The book is realy very good.
He talked in detail about almost everything.
Talked about psychology better than a whole book in one chapter " I have read a whole book about this topic and never get more information than what he said"
explained beautifuly and nicely, HOW the trade must be executed: from A to Z. I have not find yet a better method than his.
Was great showing us how money could and must be managed.

Good book.......2007-05-30
I bought this book for my wife since she likes stock trading. She told me this is a great book which worthes 5 starts. Although I know nothing about trading, I did spent some days on this book just for curiosity. However, I felt lost most of the time since the book talks some terms with less detail (e.g., k tail). I assume that only people who knows TA will benefit from this book, not the ones who know nothing about trading or TA yet. I guess the people may benefit more if buy the author's another book "Trade for a living". So I will give a 4 stars.
Realistic and helpful.......2007-05-27
Dr. Elder provides some simple tools and great strategies for a beginner to learn trading and protect capital. He lays out achievable goals, plans, and shows his own "secret weapons". Great book!
Good as a start, better when complemented by other books.......2007-05-21
This book is a good start to acquire the knowledge necessary to be a successful trader. Its strength lies in two areas (1) Discipline and money management (2) Respect for the market, where the author emphasizes that even the most reliable patterns can fail and a trader should always be prepared for surprises in the market.
I found this book more useful when complemented by others . I would suggest " How to take money from wall street" by Oz where the book focuses on day trading techniques not touched on in this book. Also "generate thousands on your stocks........." By Elias
Second or third editions, which offers valuable practical ideas not discussed in the subject book for short and intermediate term trading as well as practical incorporation of option techniques to limit losses and enhance profits.
Dr. Elder did a good job putting the trader on the right track but you will have to enhance your knowledge by other books. I have suggested the two that worked best in my opinion.

It is time to study.......2007-02-11
If you have read "Come into my trading room" by Dr. Elder then this is a must have. It will enable you to test yourself and ensure that you understand the lessons presented in the book. I am a successful investor who aspires to trade for a living.(I have returned over 24% for the past 4 years). I have read over 40 books on trading and Dr. Elder's books are in a league of there own for being easy to understand and implement. He brings all essential disciplines that are needed together in one place. In this study guide you will be quizzed on mental discipline, basic charting, indicators, trading, day trading, advanced concepts, money management, and being organized. I have read all of his books and was shocked at how much I still didn't get. Buy it, use it, master it, you will be rewarded in the markets if you are a good student.

Study Guide for Come Into My Trading Room: A Complete Guide to Trading.......2005-10-17
Alex is steadfast on discipline and organization, absolutely required for success. His market knowledge is sound and his experience real. I have successfully used his Triple-Screen method for 25 years. His books are great because they help the trader find his own style and if you can't create variations on his work to suit yourself you are not there yet - read them again!
One of the most usefull studyguide I have ever seen..........2005-08-11
Above all the 2nd part of this StudyGuide is usefull and excellent, with many charts with entry/exit points.
I would like here to underline, with regard to the first review, that Dr Elder never talked about Bollinger Bands but ONLY about Envelopes, a totally different concept. I can assure you that when there is a good trend to go long/short at the middle line with the take profit at the upper/lower band is definetely a good technique...
