Book Description
This book focuses on Jacques-Louis David's Marat, one of the key works of art created during the period of the French Revolution and one of the most important works of Western painting. Providing an introduction that outlines the general history of the painting, it provides six new essays, each specially written for this volume, which examine the work from a variety of methodologies, including feminist, psychoanalytic and material analysis approaches. Each of these essays provides for a broader and deeper understanding of the painting, the circumstances in which it was created and commissioned, and its critical and art historical reception over two centuries.

What Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben accomplished during their time on the comic book series Swamp Thing shouldn't be underestimated in the history of comics and, specifically, the history of horror comics. The modern comics landscape has been changed by the Vertigo line of books--an imprint that traces its roots back to this version of Swamp Thing. By taking a horror character fully entrenched in a superhero world (as silly as that might seem), this creative team put a new face on horror comics and on horror in general. Swamp Thing: Love and Death is the second collection of the team's work on the series, presented here in full color. Don't let the mediocre Swamp Thing movies fool you, this book is filled with sophisticated suspense and terror.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The second volume of Swamp Thing explores the relationship between the former man, and the human woman.
Holland has come to realise that he is no longer human at all, but rather vegetable, and an earth elemental. Why, then does he have an interest in a human woman at all, or go out of his way to care for her?
Love it to Death!.......2007-07-14
This is a magnificent collection of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing stories, featuring the incomparable art of John Totleben, Steve Bissette, and Shawn McManus. Picking up where the previous volume left off, we find Swamp Thing facing one of his greatest foes with his friends Abby and Matt Cable in mortal peril throughout the entire book. Moore's writing is brilliant as usual, and Swamp Thing starts evolving as a character in these stories into the powerful plant elemental that he is today. Featured in Love and Death are the following tales:
"The Burial" where an all-too familiar spirit of the restless dead plagues our favorite muck monster.
"Love and Death", the titular story, where we see horrific things stirring in the house of the Cables as Abby deals with what she knows her husband Matt has become.
"A Halo of Flies" where an unwanted family member returns, while Swamp Thing and Abby are haunted by premonitions of a terrible apocalypse.
"The Brimstone Ballet", featuring the climactic battle between Swamp Thing and his long-time foe Arcane, as only Alan Moore can tell it.
""Down among the Dead Men" where Swamp Thing goes on an odyssey to reclaim the soul of someone he loves, and encounters a host of DC's supernatural characters on his way to purgatory. Starring Deadman, The Phantom Stranger, The Spectre, and everyone's favorite demon Etrigan!
"Pog", one of the most heartfelt stories I have ever read featuring wonderful dialogue created by Moore where familiar words and expressions are combined to create an alien language unlike any other.
"Abandoned Houses", where Abby encounters Cain from the House of Mystery and Abel from the House of Secrets, and learns a shocking truth.
And lastly, "Rite of Spring", the famous plant-sex issue, a beautiful love story that stabs at the heart.
For any comic fan, the name Alan Moore is enough reason to buy this trade, but for those of you out there who have never read any Moore, pick up volume 1 entitled Saga of the Swamp Thing first, and then start with Love and Death and the subsequent books, collecting some of the most amazing comics you'll ever read.
Alan Moore's writing made writers like Neil Gaiman possible!.......2005-07-20
I was turned on to The Swamp Thing after reading Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. Gaiman credits Moore for breaking new ground and showing him what was possible in comics, and when you look at Love and Death, you see what Gaiman meant. The macabre tone, the unusual use of panels (or lack of them), the unexpected bleeds across the gutter, all appear later on in Gaiman's work--but by reading this collection of The Swamp Thing, you can go back in time a bit and "see it for the first time." It's still fresh, it's still top notch writing after twenty years or so, and it will continue to hold up against the vast reams of mediocrity published monthly by Marvel and DC for the next twenty. Alan Moore didn't write this series for little kiddies: you can consider it the forerunner of DC's Vertigo line of comics, of which Sandman was the most famous.
This collection details the burgeoning (dare I say flowering?) relationship betwixt the Swamp Thing and Abby. The splash pages are incredibly well done, especially at the end of the story arc. Moore is practically silent on those pages, because he's smart enough to know when to shut up and let the artists tell the story. Highly recommended, both for its writing and its illustration!
Worth it just for, 'The Rite of Spring'.......2004-04-08
Vol. 2 of Alan Moore and Steve Bissette's, 'Swamp Thing,' collaboration continues the 30 issue horror epic in excellent fashion. Readers are treated to 200+ pages of horrific goodness encompassing everything from the Swamp Thing's backstory, to his descent into a highly imaginative realization of Hell to a whimsical homage of Walt Kelly's, 'Pogo,' comic strips. As good as these bits are the absolute strength in Vol. 2 is found in its final chapter - "The Rite of Spring.' Published originally in 1985 as issue #34 of, 'The Swamp Thing,' this episode from start to finish deals with the physical/metaphysical consummation of love between the Swamp Thing and Abigail that will blow your mind. Forget all that you've heard that this episode is nothing but 'sex with a vegetable.' At its base, 'The Rite of Spring,' recreates the swooning emotions of love and passion in comic book form more effectively then 99.99% of every page of published prose out there on that matter. At its original time of publishing it was a watershed moment in comics history and reading that chapter some 20 years later it still retains every bit of its artistic strength.
Shush Your Cyanicisms.......2003-04-19
I can't take credit for the title of this review. That's a line uttered by the incongruously adorable guest character Pog in this volume of the Swamp Thing series. This is the second collection of the brilliant run by Alan Moore. This edition is a little bigger than the others in the series, as it contains seven original Swamp Thing issues (#28-34) but also the double-sized 1985 Annual issue. Due to the very high quality of the Swamp Thing series, especially in terms of art, the plotlines got a little jumbled during this period. As described in the very cool introduction by Neil Gaiman, regular artists Stephen Bissette and John Totleben were unable to complete all the intricate artwork for each issue on time, especially with the addition of the Annual. So "fill-in" stories had to be used to relieve the deadline pressure, and guest artists were utilized. Much credit goes to Shawn McManus for contributing two issues during this period, including the bizarre and whimsical "Pog," which is Moore's very unusual tribute to Walt Kelly's original swamp denizen Pogo. In this run of Swamp Thing installments we are still learning more about Swamp Thing's origins and abilities (as he is himself), and getting much closer to the Abby character, who is surely one of the most intriguing and bewitching women in comics history. Moore even brilliantly incorporates a reprint of Swamp Thing's first appearance in the House of Secrets series from back in 1972, deftly clearing up some kinks in the character's continuity. The most amazing story here appears as the last installment, "Rites of Spring" from issue #34, a tremendous poetic composition made all the more incredible by the art of Bissette and Totleben, in which Swampy and Abby find true earthly love. And impossible as it might be to believe, the series got even better after this.
Book Description
Humorous animal photos are captioned with witty one-liners that touch on virtually every aspect of our lives. The threefold purpose of this clever little gift book is to provoke a smile, remind the reader of typical human foibles, and inspire readers to recognize something of themselves in the humorous phrases. For instance, a typical photo shows a family of lazy walruses lounging at the seashore, and the accompanying caption reads: Exercise is a dirty word. Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate. Close-up, black-and-white photos appear on every two-page spread, and each cleverly-captioned picture reminds us that animals and human beings have more in common than we sometimes like to admit.
Book Description
In six essays written especially for this volume, The Godfather trilogy is reexamined from a variety of perspectives. Providing original analyses on the form and significance of Coppola's achievement, they demonstrate how the filmmaker revised the conventions of the American crime film in the Vietnam era, his treatment of the capitalism of the criminal underworld and its inherent violence, the power struggles within Hollywood over the film, and the contribution of opera to the epic force and cinematic style of Coppola's vision of an American criminal dynasty.
Customer Reviews:
Just when you think you've read the dumbest review............2004-03-11
I find it striking that there are so many dumb people in the world. Like the person who wrote the review of this book and said "it's better than The Godfather...Mario Puzzo does an excellent job"! First, Editors Nick Browne & Horton Andrew wrote this book -- NOT MARIO PUZZO! Secondly, it analyzes the trilogy -- it's not an addition to the trilogy -- and thirdly, quit writing reviews about stuff you don't know. That's something I cannot understand, you write about something you know nothing about!
Amazing.......2001-01-20
I could not stop turning the pages! I read & re-read the book, and I am still completly compelled with the Godfather! Much better than the movies! This is simply one of the best novels that has ever been written. It can hold its own among some of the greatest writers in history. Truly the defining novel of its genre. Mario Puzo has written the perfect novel and I for one will never forget his work.

Book Description
Singer, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and superstar, Sheryl Crow is one of the most respected and accomplished artists on the rock scene today, with eight Grammy awards, sold-out concerts, and album sales in excess of 20 million copies. Her distinctive vocal style and idiosyncratic sound, which blends rock with "alternative country," folk with "neo-hippy," has been widely imitated. Sheryl Crow: No Fool to This Game tells the unvarnished story behind the south Missouri native who, in addition to her own accomplishments, has collaborated on stage and in the studio with many of the world's most celebrated musical artists. This mesmerizing biography digs beneath the media hype and public image to uncover the full facts about this talented, complex, independent, and incredibly driven woman who, within a relatively short period of time, has blazed a rich and intricate trail on her own terms. New York Times best-selling author Richard Buskin has closely tracked Sheryl Crow's career from the release of her award-winning 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, through her equally successful follow-ups, including her new 2002 album, C'mon, C'mon. Filled with in-depth research and personal interviews with Sheryl Crow's friends, colleagues, and even adversaries, this book offers a fascinating, multifaceted look at a life that has encompassed numerous highs and lows-while also providing rare insight into how a star is born, nourished, and marketed in today's cutthroat music industry.
Customer Reviews:
Not too much to expect..........2005-04-02
This book is very enjoyable - up until the part dealing with Tuesday Night Music Club. This part easily takes up 2/3 of the book. It also becomes over-informative about the album and its making - there's so many little remarks and infos that really aren't that interesting about the album, and make reading that section tedious.
Everything else in the book relating to the other albums is basically short mentions of them, compared to the TNMC section. Don't expect to learn anything much about the follow-up albums.
In short, I wanted a bio of Sheryl Crow, not a long-winded overdone account of how TNMC was made.
Average reading.......2003-08-11
This is currently the only book about Sheryl Crow in print. In the first chapter, the author, Richard Buskin, states and explains how Sheryl wanted no part in this book. It's easy to see why. While the book is informative, it draws from too many of the same sources. I lost count of the times he quotes VH1's Behind the Music special on her. Not only that, but the text is often very meandering and the author often repeats himself. However there are some interesting accounts of her albums. Like the acclaimed first album that was never released because Sheryl did not like the polished sound of the record, to the behind the scenes turmoil behind her first album TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, in which Sheryl was accused of taking all the credit and giving none to the band. That was the longest part of the book. Next was SHERYL CROW's second album and how she did not want to work with Bill Botrell who she worked with on her first released album. This is when the book became more interesting, because it dealt with where Sheryl became more in control of the type of music she wanted to do and how she wanted to present herself. I enjoyed the story of how the song "The Book" came to be. Next was THE GLOBE SESSIONS, her 1998 album, and how she was having trouble recording the album and finding the right songs, how it was delayed etc. Then he explains about her current album C'MON C'MON and the trouble she suffered during the recording process such as depression, not wanting to record, and everything like that. The book does not talk much about her relationships with Eric Clapton and Owen Wilson. It's not that bad a book but hopefully there will be an autobiography in the future or at least a book written about her with better references and quotes.
Great effort especially given his limitations.......2003-08-04
Hope that Mr. Buskin gets an opportunity to write an authorized biography of Ms. Crow. In the introduction, he freely acknowledges that neither she, her family nor her management would speak to him. In spite of this, his book seems to present a pretty balanced account of her career and avoids being sleazy. He provides terrific insight into the record industry and how records and stars are made. Still, I would like to read "the rest of the story...," to hear more from Ms. Crow and her family. Would recommend to book to anyone interested in Ms. Crow and her career.
Behind the Music.............2003-04-07
It's fascinating reading about how my favorite Sheryl Crow songs were birthed into existence. That was my favorite part of the book and Mr. Buskin did a superb job of detailing the history of all of her songs. This is a gripping story of Ms. Crow's rise to fame via determination, hard work and a single-minded ambition to succeed. I came away applauding her tenacity, her talent and her sheer will to survive in the dog-eat-dog music business. If you enjoy Sheryl Crow's music then this book is a must-read for you. You'll come away feeling as if you know her and her music in a deeper way. I highly recommend this well-written book.
Some Good Insight But Certain Aspects Are Missing.......2003-02-21
Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of Sheryl Crow's music. Furthermore, I admire her perserverance to make it in the music business. However, Richard Buskin's unauthorized biography No Fool To This Game seems only able to tell part of the story. In addition, the writing style is not easy to read with too much hearsay from VH1 episodes.
Richard Buskin does give some good details of Crow's growing up years and her musical influences. Buskin seems to portray her as your average teen with typical mood swings. Her later experiences in rock n roll bands are documented but somehow nothing really excites the listener. Probably due to the fact that Buskin could not get any documentation from Sheryl herself. The scattered information from her peers just does not seem to cut it.
The details behind her working with Michael Jackson and Don Henley are pretty interesting. Its amazing how the gloved one is portrayed as so aloof to his fellow band mates. Nonetheless, Sheryl's networking abilities are quite inspiring.
Also of interest are her several romantic adventures which unfortunately did not lead to true love. At least she and Eric Clapton are good friends. Whereas these insights do help me relate even more to the words and the attitude to Sheryl Crow's songs, somehow I am left with the feeling that there is more information behind the scenes that Mr. Buskin could not give us. We need more than just quotes for a good biography.
The information behind the key songs on Sheryl's recordings are pretty interesting. However the meandering writing style is certainly distracting.
The Coda chapter stands strong as Buskin gives some good quotes on Sheryl which give insight to her true personality. A good glossary section and a nice photo arrangment as well.
Some good insight on Sheryl Crow yes indeed. However, I am hopeful that someone else will come out with a more detailed account of this very talented singer.

Is love really all you need? Tim Sanders, director of Yahoo's in-house think tank, believes love is the crucial element in the search for personal and professional success. In Love Is the Killer App he explains why. Sander's advice is to be a "lovecat," which despite the cutesy moniker is his sincere and surprisingly practical prescription for advancement both inside and outside the office. It starts with amassing as much usable knowledge as possible, which he explains can be done by religiously carving out time to read and then poring through as many cutting-edge books in your field as possible. It follows with an emphasis on networking to the extreme. Sanders offers concrete suggestions, from compiling a super list of contacts to ensuring all are regularly stored in an always-accessible format. And he concludes by advocating a true mindset of compassion, which he says involves sharing this knowledge with those contacts and ultimately helping anyone who in one way or another may ultimately help you. Through identifiable anecdotes and specific recommendations, the book promotes an undeniably feasible yet decidedly offbeat program that has worked for the author and could prove equally favorable for others who apply it. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Are you wondering what the next killer app will be? Do you want to know how you can maintain and add to your value during these rapidly changing times? Are you wondering how the word love can even be used in the context of business?
Instead of wondering, read this book and find out how to become a lovecat—a nice, smart person who succeeds in business and in life.
How do you become a lovecat? By sharing your intangibles. By that I mean:
Your knowledge: everything that comes from all the books that I’ll encourage you to devour.

Dale Carnegie for Our Generation.......2007-09-21
Tim Sanders' does an outstanding job of articulating an approach to business excellence that resonates with those of us that don't subscribe to the "kill or be killed", mercenary school of business. Love is the Killer App presents a cogent argument for adopting his positive principles of engagement. His approach of delivering value in a personal way and operating from an "abundance perspective" as opposed looking at business as a win-lose proposition is refreshing. Being a Lovecat is fun, sustainable and in the end more profitable.
Biz love for today's workforce... count me in!.......2007-09-17
This book works directly with anyone trying to differentiate themselves in the workforce today. Relevant to anyone who wants to enjoy their life and their job more, this book really shows how the "nice guy" can succeed and actually finish first. Great quick read that will benefit anyone.
Outstanding.......2007-08-30
This book is the best!
It is one of the most useful and inspiring books I ever read!!!
It tells you how to spread love throughout the cold, unfeeling corporate world of one line emails and cubicle prisons.
The value of intangibles.......2007-07-21
This book is a treatise on the value of intangibles in business: value of knowledge, compassion, and networks. Describing himself as a 'lovecat', Tim Sanders strongly encourages establishing a solid book-reading habit, a habit for compassion towards your 'bizmates', and an open Rolodex. In the end, it comes down to building a valuable personal brand: treat everyone with respect, you never know what the future holds. If you're already convinced of the value of reading and networks, you might want to look at something else on the bookshelf, and if not, it will be a good investment of your time.
Tim Sanders is amazing.......2007-05-16
This book is Tim Sander. He believes in putting people first and being a "LoveCat". His message is hard hitting and to the point, but totally do-able. Treat people well in business! Duh! But somewhere along the line many professionals forgot this point. Love gets you farther.
The book is great, but more importantly, if you have never seen Tim Sanders speak live....you have missed out. He is one of the most engaging professional business speakers of our time. I have hired him for business events and the audience raves about his presentation for years afterward.
